I have to compliment the Zone for being such a welcoming store. I am a 66yr old female and certainly don't fit the common idea of a comic store customer but I always feel welcome there. They offer a subscription service and hold your copies and not only do they do that but they know you as a person and can recommend other comics for you to try. As well as buying comics for myself, I search for comics for my grandchildren too which can be difficult since they are 4, 7, and 10 and most of the all ages comics are still not appropriate for them but Dan and the other employees have a good grasp of that and they have a special section set aside that is Kid Friendly and it truly is. And for FCBD (free comic book day in May) they make a big effort to have issues appropriate for kids and it is appreciated when you see the number of kids who attend on that day. I have often also special ordered issues of comics or graphic novels that they did not have. In addition to the comics they have trade paperback issues, toys, t-shirts, some non-sport cards and of course supplies to keep your comics in good condition. There is plenty of room to wander around and explore without being crowded. I have shopped in many comic stores, in New York State, California, Maryland, New Jersey, and Philadelphia as well as others in Louisville and this is definitely the friendliest, most helpful and most willing to talk to you and help you decide if you are looking for something new or just need to catch up with what is happening in a particular story. As a comic-novice and introverted female, I was intimidated walking into The Zone for the first time. Comic book stores in general do not have a great reputation for being welcoming to "outsiders" and I was nervous I would not be welcome there. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The current owner, Dan, was there and readily answered my questions about what comics were appropriate for my daughters (as they were only 7 and 5 years old at the time). He went out of his way to show us some viable options and make us feel comfortable there. That's been roughly a year ago and, while I'm still pretty naive about many things related to comics, I am never embarrassed to ask a question or for a recommendation at The Zone. I have never been made to feel stupid or ignorant for not knowing everyone or everything there. In fact, every staff person I have met there makes an effort to greet customers, make eye contact, and give you a smile to help you feel welcomed. Anytime they haven't had a book I was looking for, they were quick to pull one from the back or offer to order it for me. I haven't looked for many back issues so can't really speak to that other than to encourage any customers looking for something in particular to ask the staff. If they don't have it I'm sure they will try to get it for you or give you suggestions on other ways to obtain it. I recently moved back to Louisville and was shocked to find the Zone was gone on Shelbyville Road. So I started going to some of the other shops in town, which I was not happy to do so. To my surprise, I found out one day, that the Zone moved and had a new owner! So I decided to check it out and I was blown away. Right off the bat when I walked in to the new store, the owner greeted me and said hello. I've never been to a comic shop in Louisville where they actually speak to you and are nice. So I looked around the store for a bit and noticed that it was extremely clean and well laid out. I wasn't bothered by someone desperate to sell something like at other shops, but the owner was there if I had a question. There was a book I was looking for that they were sold out of and he immediately ordered it for me. I thanked him and the next week I received a call telling me my book was in. When I shopped there in the past (2002-2006) some of the people that worked there would get a little snobbish about what I was reading and try and belittle me. Not anymore!!! The "new Zone" will blow you away by their level of customer service and professionalism. Not to mention their vast knowledge about comics! So needless to say, I moved my business to the Zone and am very happy! I used to be an avid comic book collector about 8-10 years ago. I just moved into the neighborhood close to The Zone and shop the Kroger next store. It took me about 3 weeks to fight the urge to go in and browse the store. The first person that I met was Dan. I have been in retail/customer service for most of my career and Dan was perfect. He took the time to show me his personal collection, tell me about the latest stories along with updating me over the past 8-10 years that I had missed. The Zone has a program that anyone can sign up for allowing you to never miss any comic book that you may want. You sign up and list all your favorite comics. Then every Wednesday when you go in the staff learns you by name and hands you a stack of comics that they have on hold for you. In addition, you receive updates of new comics each week coming out via email. This allows you to either call in or become a member of the website and request any new pulls that might interest you. On top of that, you receive a discount!!!! I have yet to miss a comic that I wanted. Personally, I have become an avid collector again thanks to Dan and his great staff. They have come to know me by name and I enjoy talking to them as does every customer I see walk in there. They always go the mile to help anyone out that wants it. Therefore, if friendly service and a new friend that helps when you ask or not is what you are looking for I highly recommend The Zone. read more

The Zone Comic Shop is the best kept secret in Louisville. For years I thought there was only one comic shop in Louisville (and most everyone knows which other shop I'm talking about) I found the zone by accident. I was shopping on ebay and found the comic I was looking for, not only was it listed with a low price but also free shipping. I went on to look at the other items that were listed and discovered by the seller info that the Zone was located here in my hometown. The next day I visited the store and found the comic I was looking for. The Zone is well lit, clean and spacious. The sales staff that very friendly and helpful and they were not only knowledgeable, but just as passionate about comics as I am. They were so friendly that before I knew it I was there for 2 hours just talking comics. I'm not sure why people think the staff is elitist or snobbish because each week that I come and get my comics the staff always greets me (Along with other customers )and is always ready to help or answer any questions I have. There is a decent selection of back issue comics and if toys or games are your interest there is a awsome selection of those too. In the short time that I have been a customer at the Zone I know there is nothing the staff won't do to make not just me but everyone a happy customer, and if you are wanting to get into comics I highly recommend the Zone as a place to start!! read more

I have been a comic reader/collector for approximately 25 years and have been to all the comic stores in the Louisville area. The Zone is by far the best experience I have had to date. They hold all of my subscriptions and never miss an issue. I bring my three children with me and the staff treats them with a great deal of respect. The staff, even the new ones, make it a point to learn my name and recognize me when I walk in the door so they can have my subscriptions ready for me to check out without me even ASKING for them. If they don't have something I asked for, they go out of their way to find it; sometimes even giving up a copy of a comic they were holding for themselves! Yes comic "geeks" work at and hang out at the store. It is a comic book/collectibles store after all. What do you expect to find there? Doctors? Lawyers? Oh, wait a minute... I have met both doctors and lawyers while shopping at The Zone. The Zone really is your friendly neighborhood comic book store. read more

I don't really know what these other comments are referring to, but I've been getting my comics from the Zone for over a year now and I've never had those experiences. I've always found Dan, Robin, and the rest of the staff extremely polite(first shop I've been to that the staff actually introduced themselves to me), helpful, and knowledgeable. They always greet me when I come in, point me in the direction of books I might find interesting, and have even ordered trade paperbacks I had inquired about that they didn't have in stock. Also, when the 2nd TPB I ordered came in damaged from the distributor, Dan immediately ordered me a replacement, but also let me take the damaged book home so I could read it in the meanwhile while I waited for the replacement to arrive. In closing I would just like to say the Zone is a great place to go if you love comics, or even if you don't and are just looking for a gift for someone you care about. read more

I am not a comic book reader but my husband is and I have to say that Dan (store owner) is absolutely the best. He takes his customers to heart, and gets to know each one of them. There is not any store I know in Louisville I can go in and the owner know what my husband likes. I thought well it is probably just my husband has built up a relationship with him cause he spends so much time in the store. I recently went with him and hung out in the store while they had there regular talk shop conversation. I noticed as each customer came and went he not only did he call them by name, had the purchase ready and remembered something about that customer on a personal level. The Zone is a great place to meet with friends and discuss and purchase comics, toys, and all kinds of wonderful pop culture items. The staff is very friendly and eager to assist you. I have always been treated with respect and greeted with kindness by the entire staff that works there. I have been a customer since 2007 and have never encountered any rude customer service or off color remarks. The Zone has always been a place where everyone is welcome to discuss and purchase what brought all of us together in the first place.....comics. Zone Comic Book Shop is the only comic book shop to go in Louisville. The staff is very kind and inviting. The Zone has me even more into comics than I was before. I felt at home the 2nd time I walked into the store. My friends who aren't in to comics love to go with me just because of the great service and the fun conversations to be had with the staff and other customers. I do have to agree with some of the previous reviews regarding the zone during the previous owners. However with the new owner Dan, this is by far one of my favorite comic shops. Not only does he take care in keeping all of my holds. But he also does special orders as well as remembering my personal interests and setting products aside that he thinks id be interested in for me to look act. Great clean and family friendly shop. Prices are fair and the customer service is outstanding. If the owner doesn't have what I want he will bend over backwards to obtain it. There is always a welcoming atmosphere within the store.
