There are not many books stores left and prices have gotten so high. This is the place for you if you like traditional paper books. Prices are really good and the selection is not bad at all. How have I not known about the wonderfulness of Half Price Books?!? My son and I stopped in when we were shopping in the area. I don't know what I was expecting but what I found was a great selection of books at very cheap prices, other fun bits and extras that also were pretty cheap and a buzzing store that clearly contained a lot of staff and customers that know each other. This shop is a community, that was very evident. I found a few books I had on my wishlist with a certain website (rhymes with "Shmamazon") at much better prices as well as some that caught my eye. I also let my son pick out books for him and his sister. When we checked out, the cashier told me about their adult summer reading challenge and kids storytime. What a special place! read more

My wife and I love Half Price Books, and it's a frequent stop when we're in the area. The reasons we visit, however, are different. My wife usually has a certain book or author in mind. Me? I head straight for the Vinyl and start perusing the albums. The 45s not so much because 98% of them have no sleeve and are in a pile, but the 12' vinyl is what I take my time going through. I've found some pretty awesome selections, but you wade through a lot of mediocrity in the process....and I touched WAY too much Midler for my taste one day. One of the things I like best about Half Price books is the amazing variety of merchandise. It's not just books. They have a book buy-back program where you can take your old books in and they'll give you store credit for them. Don't expect that to add up to much unless you bring a shit ton of books, however, as they're pretty stingy with the in-store credit thing. They also have a loyalty club that is a "spend $20 and get a stamp on your card" thing, but that's only one stamp per visit on purchases over $20. Every time I come here I never leave empty handed. They have a large selection in every category out there, so you can definitely find gifts at low prices. It has made broaden my horizons on to new things. Because of that I have discovered geopolitical strategy and what that is, a better cook, and my understanding of history has increased. Adding to my review to show that rather than putting the price sticker on the worthless protective cover they put on the album, they put the sticker on the cover of the album jacket itself, something that I just paid nearly $100 for and is highly collectible and will decrease in value if messed up when trying to remove the sticker. read more

I love going to half price books. Me and my significant other go almost every weekend. They offer pretty much anything you might be looking for comics, video games, books (of any genre), coloring books, board games. I've tried selling here and I will say you won't get much for even almost perfect condition books but I just use that money to fund my next purchase. Any of the workers I've gotten the chance to chat with have been nothing but wonderful. Such a cool place. I had never been here before but a friend had told me that she comes often. A pretty small store but has all the newest goodies. They sell books and I noticed they sell records as well. Even saw some picture frames at the register. The people there were extremely nice. One helped me find all the books I was looking for but also explained to me how the store works. They typically have the books that are hit sellers in the major bookstores. So I assume they don't have super old ones. You can also sell your books to them and get a portion of what you paid. Better than nothing. I don't think they will take really old ones but rather the hot ones again. I plan to go back to buy books and sell some of these newer ones I have. I won't go to a major bookstore unless I'm looking for an older book. Great place! Love it! read more

This is one of my favorite second hand stores to buy board games from. Typically, the games have all their pieces and even if they don't the staff is amazing at refunding and working with you. The selection is always updating as they price new games and they always have a nice selection of classic and designer board games to choose from. The kids section is also very good. Four shelves of clearance kids chapter and board books for only a dollar or two. The rewards program is very nice as well. Every $20 purchase gives you a "stamp". Fill the card to get 25% off your next entire purchase. I typically visit a couple times each week. Such an amazing store! read more

Wow! This place was sooo busy! There were so many people in here. I came at noon on a Saturday to meet a friend and she was looking for movies with her husband. They bought a few, including a board game. Each aisle I was in had lots of people. I constantly felt like I was getting in peoples way. We were all a bit crammed in the movie/TV aisle. I enjoyed looking at the interior design aisle for ideas. Always so many books to browse through even if I don't end up purchasing it! I ended up picking up a $3.99 DVD of the first season of Friday Night Lights. Can't pass up that price! Like the other location on Westport, it looks about the same and is pretty organized. Service was good. The line went fast. The only nightmare was parking. It shares with other businesses. I had no trouble finding a spot but it was a wait to get out. There's a traffic light but we were all stuck in the parking lot for a bit. read more

Shortly before the pandemic hit, Half Price Books became Double Price Books and has yet to turn down the temperature. I used to be a regular shopper here, but I've only popped in a few times since 2020 and it's been more and more depressing with each visit. To add insult to injury, they stopped offering decent coupons and sales, so these ludicrous prices really are what they say on the tin. The LP section has to be the worst offender. Records that would hang out in the Goodwill dollar bin for weeks are priced between seven to fifteen bucks here. They're trying to get $40 for a LP copy of Lady Gaga's "Chromatica"; that album was a clearance-section staple for a long time and hasn't exactly appreciated in value. Unfortunately, the price gouging isn't limited to vinyl, and even the book prices have become steep. Half Price Books is notorious for offering the type of lowball offers that'd make a GameStop employee blush, so all around, their business model has taken "buy low, sell high" to an unreasonable extreme. In recent years, a lot of media stores have gotten particularly bold with their video game pricing. Surprisingly, that's this HPB's saving grace, as there are still some decent game deals. Also, the employees are friendly and effective at knocking out lines. The potential is there for this to be a fun, worthwhile place to shop once again. For now, it's like the flea market seller who's convinced their Princess Diana Beanie Baby is a priceless antique. read more

Disclaimer: An employee at Half Price Books made me mad this past weekend. I'll be fair in my review but it is the tipping point for me visit this store less frequently. My friends and two younger sons enjoy visiting Half Price. I think it's the "throw back" feel of the long-gone local bookstores coupled with the mystery of what you'll find among the row of books or movies and boxes of music. Me? I've struggle to completely enjoy my ventures here. It's very overwhelming unless I have a book in mind. It's not because I need a new book or that I'm picky about what I'm reading -- this girl will buy books from yard sales all day long -- it's just that nothing stands out in the drab, neutral-colored shelves and I often leave with nothing in hand. The store also feels crowded and a bit dingy so I haven't wanted to linger any longer than it takes to get my kids out of the door. My favorite part of the store is the clearance area for young children. You can find easy readers for 50 cents. That's a great deal for picking out a variety of books for your new reader. Every so often, the store also sponsors a Kids Event. Here's what upset me last weekend. In my mind, Half Price Books was open until 11pm. So when I walked in with my family a few minutes before 10pm, I wasn't looking at my watch. We were "greeted" abruptly by a young girl who didn't say "hello" - instead she said "We close in 7 minutes." I grabbed my kids hands and we left. I also drove down the street to the less hipster bookstore and spent my hard-earned money. Now, I was young once. Working retail is typically a thankless job and when your shift is over, you have cooler things to do than deal with families. I also used to "greet" people rudely -- and it's only purpose was to let people know I was annoyed with their late arrival so they wouldn't shop in my store. Guess it's karma ... One day this same employee will stop dying her hair green, settle down and one day walk into a store with her kids to be poorly welcomed. Overall advice ... If you have a particular book/movie/CD in mind, stop by for a look. Who doesn't love a cheaper deal? Or, if you enjoy browsing aisles of unknown books and have time to kill, this place may be your thing too. Oh -- and don't arrive before closing time. read more

I've only ventured to half priced books,a handful of times. My most recent visit was to find material to teach my 6 year old. I was able to find almost everything I needed in the clearance section! Almost everything I bought was $1-$2! Other than the excellent prices, half priced books(this location) is also a very clean and well stocked store. This location seems to always be busy when ive been there, but the employees are always very quick to help. I highly recommend stopping by to sell or buy books, video games,or family board games. (As well as many other things) If you have children, you'll adore the children's section. I spent most of my time there searching through the children's books. Everything is easy to find, and sorted in a very simple manner. My daughter was able to easily find a book on how to draw dinosaurs, and my son quickly found a book on tractors he just had to have. read more

Half Price Books is one of my favorite used book superstores! I could literally spend hours here just browsing through the vast selection of used books, magazines, music and movies. Each store I've been to has a different selection, so I always come in here with an idea of what I want, but not knowing exactly what I'm going to buy. It's like going on a scavenger hunt for treasures at deep discounts. I shopped at the Redmond WA store (which has 2 floors) a while back and was very impressed. I spent almost 2 hours in the store picking out some interesting travel and history books and used CDs, filling up two shopping bags. One of the CDs was autographed and I paid only $5.99 for it. I was driving along Hurstbourne Pkwy around 9:45AM on a sunny Friday, when I spotted a Half Price Books in a strip plaza and there was a short line of folks waiting to get in when the store opened at 10AM. I immediately pulled into the parking lot and waited patiently for the doors to open. Some of the folks waiting were carrying in boxes and bags of used books since Half Price Books has a "buy" counter in the back of the store where you can sell your books. The staff will inspect and appraise your used books and page you over to the "buy" counter with an offer. Someone else's unwanted goods could be another's treasure. This store is a good size, not too big, with a pretty good selection of used books, CDs, cassettes, DVDs, VHS movies, gifts, and more. The layout of the store is pretty organized and neat. My friend was also with me and he spent a good deal of time browsing through the used CDs, most priced well under $10. I headed to the back of the store where the travel and travel essay books were and scored several good books in mint condition including a few Images of America history books (some Kentucky cities and Mammoth Cave) and a travel guide to I-75 from Michigan to Florida, all half price or better. My friend bought several paperbacks to read in the car. I could've spent more time here, but I had to stay on a planned schedule for my road trip. Later in the day, we visited Mammoth Cave National Park and the gift shop had the same Images of America book (Mammoth Cave & the Kentucky Cave Region) in stock for $21.99, which I purchased earlier at Half Price Books for only $9.99, score! read more

I am a voracious reader but I don't believe in having a large, personal library because while I love to read and I love books it is a rare, rare book that I read again later. Half Priced Books is a God send with my "catch and release" attitude toward books. I get to purchase books and then sell them back to Half Priced books when I am done. I am almost a tightwad and they almost always have some sort of special or coupon. I realize that if I were the tightwad people accuse me of being that I would go to the public library, however, I cannot be prevailed upon to return books in a timely fashion so my late fees would equal what I pay for the book anyway. I know who I am. I own who I am: I am a train wreck, a poster child for white privilege, and I am wasteful when it comes to time and money. This mitigates my worst bibliophile predilections. The one drawback, and it's the nature of the beast, if you're looking for something specific it may or may not be there. The staff is incredibly helpful and will give it a look. I would also like to see more money for my books but they aren't earning interest occupying a space on my shelf never to be read again so I guess it evens out. Oh, and I have to smell my purchases before buying them which is disgusting and amusing at the same time. read more

Our favorite bookstore for our family. Finding books that my special needs daughter will enjoy can be a challenge. Half priced books not only have books that are at, or slightly above her level. They typically have several copies of the various titles so that we can get two copies so we can read together over the phone when we can't be beside each other. The prices are very reasonable, and I much prefer buying our copies as opposed to checking one out at the library. They buy books as well, which we sometimes take advantage of, if we don't donate the books after we finish to other friends that might enjoy a good book. You never know what you will find, and admittedly, they have little trouble tempting me into browsing for an hour or four. My only complaint is that the children's section is in the very back of the store on the right. I find myself wanting to browse... and browse... read more

We love this store for what it is; a used book, cd, dvd store. They buy and sell When I was in college I always bought texts/books through Half Price. Now we buy most of our DVD's here. If you're looking for a certain book they may not be the go to place however if you are open to browsing and seeing what catches your attention this is your place! I just cannot get into this place. I've come here multiple times and every time is a mediocre to disappointing experience. And lately, it's seemed to have dwindled down even more. It's a big store for used books, movies, games and music, but it's incredibly crammed and junky. I felt like I had to Pac-Man my way through the isles, and a few isles I had to stand around and wait until there was enough room to get in. It's annoying. Not only that but Half Price is like Gamestop when it comes to buying back; I brought in about 20-30 books and got $7 (Some including expensive college textbooks!) and then they talked me into using it as a store credit (Sadly I did because I felt like it wasn't worth it anyway...should have at least used it in a drive through rather than feeding it back to them! ) Maybe if you're a die hard book lover or just happen to get lucky and stumble upon something, would I recommend coming here. Otherwise, there are soooo many better places around town you can go to. read more

And they have so much! They now carry Out of Print products which are one of my favorite book apparel brands. From socks, to shirts, to bags they have so many awesome options. But not just that....classic video games, movies, music, board games, crafts....etc! I recently purchased a Harry Potter Crochet kit to fill my crafting time in the evenings. Planned to walk in a park but weather was uncooperative so husband and I browsed through Half Price. Masks are required and doors create separate paths to enter and exit the store. The store has arrows and one way signs in each aisle to encourage social distancing. Signs were not always easy to see and created awkward pathways. Alcoves (dead-end aisles) are limited to one person. Normally, weekends are too busy in this store especially if you want them to purchase your used books/media/games/puzzles. Not on this Saturday afternoon however. Store contains new and used items with an emphasis on the used. Just good to be aware of this. Store is clean and staff were pleasant. Store offers some regular discounts. I get 10% off for being a teacher. There are no real easy ways to find a certain book at the store itself. It is more for browsing in areas and assuming you can figure the most likely subcategory for your purposes. Store does online orders also (which I've not tried). read more

I love this bookstore. They have a wide selection of used books, games, collectibles, journals, diaries, etc. Most books are cheaper than you could find them online and new. If you need a specific title, the staff is happy to help! I've also been able to find text books for college, and practice exams for boards! I have quite a bit of apprehension about reviewing Half Price Books because if I tell you, you might go and if you go, you might buy the books that I want to buy for the dirt cheap prices that I want to pay for them. Then again, I want them to stay in business, particularly with how hard printed book stores have it these days, so here's why you should go buy the books that I haven't claimed as mine. I only stumbled across Half Price Books (HPB) on a drive back from Barnes and Noble where I had purchased four books from their bargain section. I subsequently found the books I had just purchased at HPB for about 30-40% less than what I had just forked over. Even some of their text books are available at about 10% what I've paid elsewhere. This place is mis-named. It really should be "Books for a Fraction of the Price." Though, I suppose that doesn't roll off the tongue quite as easily. Having shopped at bargain book stores before, I know what you're probably thinking as well. You probably imagine a run-down store with a scant selection ancient tomes covering a piddly assortment of topics. Well, you're wrong. Though HPB certainly isn't a mammoth store, it has an amazing range of books in all of the categories you would expect from a national chain without the national chain prices. Don't go in expecting to find stacks of the latest best-sellers, though their selection is surprisingly up-to-date and don't expect to see a built-in coffee shop with 104 different flavors of lattes. What you can expect is exactly what I came in for: a massive selection of books at bargain basement prices! read more

Half Price Books is a gem of a store, and one I love visiting when I'm home in Louisville. This store, conveniently located in a strip mall on Hurstbourne, has a huge selection. Seriously, you walk in here, and it is wall-to-wall books. It can get a little crowded in the aisles, but I would rather sacrifice some walking room for the huge selection. The aisles are clearly marked with the genres of books they represent. Half Price generally does a good job of keeping books in order, and you can find what you're looking for if you pay attention to the sections. In addition to books, Half Price offers a massive selection of music, board games, collectibles, and movies. Also, as a video game nerd, I appreciate their selection of classic video games. You can often find classic games and consoles (such as SNES and Dreamcast) here. Even if you're not buying anything, it is fun just to walk around and browse the selection. Prices are generally very reasonable, but expect to pay a good amount for popular novels or movies. (Star Wars movies, in particular, are priced high.) It's all supply and demand though, so I understand. In any case, you're getting a better deal than you would buying new somewhere else. Books here are in good shape. I've never had a major problem with the quality of items purchased here, and CDs are generally clean and free from major scratches. You can also sell your items here. Given that you're selling to a store, and they are the ones taking on the risk of making a final sale, don't expect much in terms of payment. I wouldn't sell anything super collectible, but if you have a bunch of books/DVDs sitting around that you'll never read or watch again, it's something to keep in mind. Overall, I love walking around Half Price Books. It's a great store, and it offers a lot of items you wouldn't find anywhere else at a good price. read more
