Ultra Pop is still thriving! It has a good home on Barret Ave alongside the other quirky shops and places to snack. Loved the metal masks and Halloween decor, followed closely by candy. The shop is full of books, comic books and pop figures, some not for sale but fun to look at. Always a friendly greeting when visiting and the store is nicely organized, making the small spot easy to shop. read more

A hole in the wall down in Louisville. Decided to check it out. Felt like Comic Con packed into this tiny little house. I forget his name but the dude was pretty chill. His selection varies but bet he has a little bit everything: from small little toys, reading material, bags, stickers, to pins. Pretty decent price for what he has on the shelf. read more

It's more SFW than that and could be kid-friendly if you're a certain type of cool parent to a certain type of tiny human), Paul is your guy. Ultra Pop carries an awesome selection of weird and wonderful curios, with a big emphasis on nerddoms tied to East Asia and small collectibles related to the local scene -- think Hunter S. Thompson, Colonel Sanders, Muhammad Ali. It's a great place to find an unusual gift for that unusual friend. You can easily stuff a large stocking here (nostalgic or offbeat candy, lapel pins, charms, strange totems, blind boxes, etc.). Paul stocks outré books, graphic novels, coffee table tomes, strange things to live by the toilet in your powder room. You might come across a slightly blue art show on a special evening. So many things to look at, you'll probably find something new on each visit. Forgive me for not remembering his name but the gentleman behind the counter was awesome. He went as far as to size me for a t shirt..you know how your mom would hold the t shirt up to your back and measure the shoulders??!! I'll definitely be back for birthdays and the like, and for some of those chewy now and laters!! It's ok. It is a cute little shop at the end of the retail stretch on Barrett. I've wanted to go in for years, but never really had the time or need. Until today. It is teeny tiny. My initial impression is that it is sort of like a local-focused Hot Topic (minus the clothing) or Spencers (minus the dirty gag gifts). There are some weird little comics and manga, knick-knacks, and tons...LOADS of mini pop toys (but none of the kind that you can tell which character they are before you buy it and open it...so you don't know what you are buying. It is a cool, bright space, but a lot of it was things that struck me as something you could get somewhere else. Making it less special. What really saves it is the local artist presence. There are some prints and art and books from local artists that I appreciated quite a bit. Chances are I will be back here in the future, based on the kinds of things my friends and family enjoy. And I some of the art really intrigued me. But I had higher expectations of the offerings. If you are more in to the types of things they offer than I am, you will like it much more. read more

Off the beaten path, indie, curiosities, underground. That's what comes to mind when I visit Ultra Pop. They are a small little shop off Barret but they pack a punch inside. They have lots of little vinyl figures from overseas, zines from locals, prints from local artists, one of a kind T-shirts, enamel pins and much much more. I really love this place because I can usually find something gift wise for that person who already has everything or gives you the "I don't know what I want" response for gifts. I am also a huge fan that they have art shows and it is a great chance to pickup some one of a kind handmade local art that is eccentric. This place is worth a visit if you are looking for something that isn't mainstream (even when it comes to the local scene), some of the items are relatively cheap and some are hard to find so they cost a little more. KVR said it best when she said that this is a local version of Spencer's. A local, not gross Spencer's. To be fair, it's a lot better lit. They also have a nicely curated inventory. It was nice collectibles and not a lot of crap. Also, there was a good selection of local artists' work in the store so I appreciated that. Ultra Pop comes in a small package. It's a tiny store on Barret Avenue. But it packs a big punch if you're into anime, pop art, video game, comic book and cartoon collectibles. There's a great selection of graphic novels, art and vinyl as well. Paul, the owner, is such a fun guy to chat with as well. You can tell the items in the shop bring him joy -- which is the point of a toy shop after all. I wandered into Ultra Pop just before Christmas when I was looking for some stocking stuffers for my fiance and his brother. This shop is chock full of toys, but they're the toys that nerdy adults are likely into as well. And it was fun perusing all the neat odds and ends. I love me some "Adventure Time" and "Star Wars," and Ultra Pop has neat gifts related to those. Paul carries books and paraphernalia associated with old-school Nintendo games, which brought me back. If I owned my own business it would probably resemble Ultrapop. I love everything in here! Awesome clothing, a mind-blowing vinyl/ kaiju collection, posters, vinyl records (hand selected and every album is spot on), local art prints, toys, books, stickers, etc. etc. Even a pug! I love coming in here and browsing, although I don't do it as often as I like, because I don't have the kind of money I'm tempted to spend. Paul is always a pleasure to chat with, and I hope this place is around forever because it's just such a cool store to have in town, and there really isn't anything else comparable in the city. read more

This review is coming from someone who has no interest in anime, manga, or cartoons. The good news is that Ultra Pop! is much more than that. It's a watering hole for artists and weirdos. The owner Paul (and his ancient dog Freddy) usually have some movie playing in the background and are happy to shoot the shit with you. Paul uses the walls of his shop as a makeshift art gallery and has a few shows throughout the year, the most popular being the annual Halloween and Valentine's shows. They aren't heavily advertised, so keep an eye out. Be ready for some not family-friendly work up during the V-Day season! I'm so glad that Ultra Pop! has been able to stay in business. Make a habit of stopping in here, even if just to pick up a keychain, a magazine, and some Pocky. It's like your friendly neighborhood hardware store, but freaky! In a good way. read more

Paul and his shop are the unique kinds of threads that is part of the wonderful tapestry that is Louisville. This isn't Spencers, that's kind of an insult in fact. Amazing local artists artworks and prints, local graphic novels and mini books, local artists clothing and buttons, stickers, etc. Random Japanese toys, giant robots, blind box figures (someone actually complained about not being able to see the item inside as if that wasnt the point...) And Paul. Paul will give you a hug if you ask him nicely. Paul will find you rare toys and whatnot, and he will pet your dog if you bring it in. If you like high-quality tchotchkes and figurines and the like that reflect all the latest, greatest, weirdest, etc. in pop culture, than this is the perfect store to blow up all your money at. If you haven't gotten addicted to opening up little mystery boxes filled with various iterations of Hello Kitty, cute monsters, Ninja Turtles, etc. etc. than be careful! However, if you've like, fallen in love with say, the Pop! figures from funco and you want to fall further down the rabbit hole and be cooler and less mainstream, than you should come into this store as the perfect next step. There's no place I'd rather window shop, though it is slightly unfortunate that a few "X-Rated" items here and there mean you'd better keep a very close eye on your little one if they wander in with you. Presumably enough of their clientelle are adult that it isn't worth it to them to sequester the stuff, but it isn't SO in your face that you can't probably be ok if you're very careful. You pay a little premium on price for shopping in a little store like this, but it's got a good little soul and GREAT stuff inside that you'd be hard-pressed to find in many other shops in Louisville. read more

I had walked and drove past this store so many times and I finally had a chance to check it out. I didn't really know what to expect when I walked in and I am still a bit unsure of how to describe it...It is an eclectic, eccentric, shop of art, collectibles, vinyl, and clothes and so much more. It looks like such a little shop, but once inside it is so much bigger (you know, like the Tardis). My favorite things here were the art prints by local artists. There is even a mural outside (as of when I saw it, still in progress) by Miss Happy Pink (who you should check out). I will be back to check out more awesome stuff in this little store read more

I've been in this store twice. Both times I loved it. Once just because I was in the neighborhood and another time for their XXX show. I was introduced to the owner who was really nice and friendly. This store is just what you would expect to find in the Highlands. They have different things you can buy and if you are looking for a unique gift, they probably have it. I bought a shirt from them last time I was there and I love it. It's been washed and washed again and still looks new. It's not like some clothes you buy in a store and after a few washes it fades or the graphic peels off. Quality stuff at decent prices. One of my favorite stores which is also ran by one of my favorite people, Ultra Paul. This store carries a wide array of unique items from clothing, collector toys, and art. Words just don't do this business justice. You just have to stop in and check the store out. This is also one of the few stores in our area that sells mishka clothing and Rebel 8 clothing.
