I was in a shop down the street and needed a bathroom. The shop owner refered me to Zum Lieben Augustin since he had no facilities in his shop. The shop owner also said he used this restaurant's bathroom and that the folks there were very friendly. I went into the restaurant, used the bathroom, and walked out. I was followed by a bald, heavily tatooed person screaming at me in German. When I made it clear that I did not understand what he was saying, he proceeded to berate me in English at high volume with threatening gestures in the middle of the sidewalk about not having said hello and goodbye. I had no idea what he was talking about. Is it some obscure Austrian or Viennese custom to say hello when entering a place of business? If so, to whom do you say hello? The room in general? The furniture? I'm sorry I am such a Canadian barbarian that I do not understand local customs. I have been in Austria and Vienna several times and have never said hello upon entering a business. I do not know who this crazy person was, but I imagine that it was the owner or manager. If so, I would recommend avoiding a restaurant run by such a person; your safety may be at risk. read more
