Unfortunately, I have write about a bad experience. My dog went to the hospital this weekend and after being seen the ER vet recommended to have a follow up with our primary. When I called the very rude receptionist said she spoke with Dr. Spence and that he did not want to see my dog. Never asked how my dog was doing, if he was feeling better. After telling her she was rude, I received a call from another person that worked there that yet again did not ask how my dog was doing and that "I'm sure Dr. Spence wants to see him". Overall I am dissatisfied with this interaction and will be looking for a new vet that actually cares about the well being of my dogs. read more

My family has taken our pets here for years now I will never step foot back in this place. I let them know by telephone never to call us. Never to send us an email. We are done. My faithful companion Dude who slept with me every night for 14 years, was taken for his shots and check up and nails trend six weeks ago. He never seemed to say him afterward he was lethargic and they told me it's most likely because of his shots and that they think he had developed a heart murmur.. I called and called and asked if I could speak with Dr. Spence because they didn't seem to be feeling any better. Could I email him? Yes email him and he'll get back to you. I explained the dire need.. couldn't get a call back. They told me I need to come in. I just spent $500. I didn't have anymore.. could I possibly use anything over-the-counter to help they would not respond they would not let me talk to him several days ago. He was laying with me he snuggled up seemed cool to the touch covered him with a little blanket and he died in my arms. This was so uncalled for I have since talked to others and they've had problems with over medication. This doctor shouldn't be practicing my opinion. We have been a patient of them for several years and were happy with them for a while, we took many dogs and cats here. However, It seems they have gotten too busy and seems to be lots of changes in their front office staff leading to my poor review. We brought my 6 year old dog in for what was a split toenail and big toe swelling. They treated with antibiotics which I understand could be potential bacterial infection but I have also learned that they should have recommended a biopsy then also. They did not but when we brought our dog back in they put her on a 2nd round of antibiotics. What I have since learned is that should have been an alarm to them that they were dealing with something else. They treated/saw her at least 4 times over the course of 3 months, all for her toe, twice for antibiotics and another two times to rewrap her toe because it was still swollen. I did then take my dog to a different vet and she has Subungual Malignant Melinoma, had surgery to remove tumor but it had spread to her lungs. Prognosis was not good and our dog has since passed away at only 6 years old. I'm so angry at their negligence to my dogs care. I would never take my animals there again. I hope the vets can take our extremely unfortunate situation and learn from it and not let something like this happen in the future. read more

Prescribed the wrong medication and entirely misdiagnosed my dog. Fortunately I went to another competent veterinarian who actually cared and my dog then received the appropriate medical treatment and prescriptions necessary to address her medical issues. If you love your pet please do not take your pet here unless you want to lose your beloved baby. Im so glad I took my baby elsewhere and her life was saved. Avoid this place like the plague. I've been taking my German shepherd to them for a few years now and they handle every issue and diagnosis with love and care. The staff from the front desk to the assistants and drs emulate how much they love animals. My dog is slowly slipping away and they've been accommodating with any request to ease the pain for her. Some extremely unwelcome guests showed up at our house. You know how it is. You do your best to best to kick them out, and make life as miserable as possible, but they refused to leave. Our poor dogs spent every waking hour stuck with these squatters and something had to be done. We're newish to Ventura, and loved our vet whom we'd been with for twenty years. We were sort of taking our time finding a great new vet, thankfully not NEEDING one - at least not before the squatters showed up. I called one vet here in town that had five stars, but they didn't provide Bravecto and were pretty pricey. The receptionist on the sly actually referred us to 101 Pet Vet saying she'd heard wonderful things about them. She was right. I was warmly greeted via phone by Logan, and only had to wait a few days to get my miserable scratchy itchy guys in to see Dr. Spence. When we arrived, we were again very warmly greeted and shown into a room right away so they could now shake with terror in private. You know how it is, they smell the fear in the parking lot. I kept telling them, "Listen, the entire facility is immaculate, everyone is lovely, the tech's are gentle and kind. And we're going to kick those hideous fleas to the curb. You've got nothing to shake about." Dr. Spence is the vet you've been missing - and the one you'll stick with forever. He was incredibly thorough and caring when examining our guys, both rescues (whom he calls "kids") and gave intelligent, thoughtful answers to my many questions about one of our dogs - the troublemaker. He also has a wicked sense of humor which I personally adore. The Bravecto worked within two hours to quell the incessant biting and scratching. Dr. Spence had suggested an injection for our one guy who seemed paticularly allergic to the bites which we agreed to. Both dogs were once again happy and calm, and bitching about other things like how boring their kibble is and why they can't stay out later on a school night. 101 Pet Vet even called the following day to check on how my kids/Troublemakers were doing. My 8yr old German Shepherd was operated on for a tumor in her spleen. Dr Christopher Spence preformed the surgery on 5/10/23. He called me at 1pm stating all went well and to pick her up at 4pm. At 4pm she was brought to me on a gurney. I was told she was not able to walk yet but would soon wake up enough to be mobile. She was placed in my car. However, they would not allow me to retain the gurney to get her out of my car once home. I was not able to get her out of the car backseat even with the help of neighbors. She passed away that night at 7pm Still in the backseat of my car. She should never have been discharged in that condition. I called Dr Spence and never got a call back. My dog gets seizures ( he's on medication). After picking up and paying the bill I was NOT informed of two seizures that happened prior. I then pick him up to bring him home and he had a large seizure while driving. It was really scary and dangerous! If I knew he had prior seizures, I would have had help with transportation. He had two more on the drive and at that point I just wanted to get home. Called the vet to see if I can give him more medicine for the seizures and that's when they informed me of the seizures he had under their care. I couldn't believe it! I then asked to talk the Vet. Which they said will call me back. They never called me or called to check up on the dog. Called two weeks later for removal of the staples( which I really didn't want to do). Hello, I am rewriting my review of 101 pet vet. I recently moved and I am one hour away from their office, though I like Dr. Spence and found him to be a very good vet. I was disappointed that they would not write a prescription for my dogs medication that I knew I could get cheaper with GoodRx they told me they could not write the prescription because it was a controlled substance. However since I have moved and changed vets I found that this is not true and the medication I paid $150 for I got for $13 with a prescription from the new vet. Then I just happened to be looking through the notes from 101 Pet vet, and there was a nasty note written in there about me from one of the staff members saying that I was angry and rude regarding the medicine which is incorrect I was not angry. I was frustrated and disappointed That they could not write a prescription to me because between the two medication's for 90 days was over $320. I felt the note was uncalled for and their stance on the medication needing to be bought from them was dishonest. Truly unfortunate because I really like Dr. Spence so if your dog doesn't need medication go see Dr. Spence because he's a great vet, but if they need medication and they won't write you a prescription you might have to rethink as not everybody can afford those prices for medication that can be purchased at a pharmacy for much less. It has been almost 1 year since the death of my beautiful German Shepherd. She had surgery on 5/10/23 and died that night due to Chris Spence's Negligence. He discharged her home unable to walk with a pressure dressing around her abdomen. She died in the back seat of my car 3 hours after picking her up at his office. She was not able to get out of the car herself and cried with pain when we tried to carry her out. I tried my best to comfort her as she lay in the car. I took her to VSMG for a necropsy and the results were clear. She should NEVER been discharged but transferred to continuing care for follow up treatment. She bled to death. My heart is broken and still the image of her lying on the back seat of my car haunt me today. Not he or his staff have ever showed remorse for his neglect. When I reminded them about the Ventura County Public Health Mask Mandate because of an increase in transmission, she said it didn't matter to them! I am a Nurse, and have a sense about professional, medical competence, and I did not at all feel this at all with Dr. Spence, [like he was uncomfortably rushing through this visit as fast as he could just to be done. #5] Our dog, who is usually great and comfortable going to the Vet..must have sensed something, as she was freaking out and had to almost be dragged her in the 'exam room' ; #6]We have always had the Vet exam our dog in front on us, and here, this Dr. Spence took her back in another room to do this which we didn't feel comfortable with. We like to see our Vet exam our dog in front of us, while an assistant is with him to help.. while he talks to us about his findings. and we see how he interacts with our dog.. #7] Bottom line: We felt very uncomfortable with Dr. Spence and his competence, and from other postings of his surgical skills, and post-op care, would not feel confident with him, if surgery were indicated for our dog . 3 stars because I have always liked the staff and have been a loyal customer/patient for over 20 years. I (my dogs) were patients when they were on Bristol. I loved some of the former vets, and I liked the current vet. HOWEVER, I do expect that when my pet is having an emergency that my pet is seen that day (if it's during the week, and my vet is open). I was shocked when they told me to go to the emergency vet, because they were "too busy" to see me until next week (I called on a Friday morning at 8 am). The former vets ALWAYS made time for emergencies...they would have others wait or reschedule. I have been on both ends of these scenarios. When your pet is having an emergency is when you want to go to a vet you know, not a stranger that will cost a fortune. We brought my female frenchie in because we suspected she was pregnant and from research done I was under the impression she would need a c-section. We brought our girl in and the doctor was adamant that she did NOT need a C-section and they prefer not to give them, it was a misconception that frenchies needed them. Fast forward a couple weeks and our girl goes Into labor. From the beginning we suspected difficulty. We called 101 and explained that the first pup was a struggle and died and she was struggling and nothing in 2 hours. They said to wait another 2 hours and if nothing go to emergency. We waited about 15 minutes and just went to emergency vet Horizon, that they recommended. Turns out our girl and the pups were in distress. They could only find one faint heart beat and momma was in distress. The vets at horizon were puzzled as to why they wouldn't schedule a c-section. Horizon wasn't much better since they wouldn't do anything unless we paid almost 6,000 upfront. When I said I didn't have that much they told me they could give me pain meds, those weren't expensive, and we could take my girl home to die. Obviously I wasn't going to do that So I call around to friends and family and got the money together. Almost 6,000 later my girl and 7 of her 8 puppies survived, some which had to be resuscitated. Either the vets at 101 are uneducated or they are in cahoots with Horizon knowing we would need an emergency c-section and have to pay much more than if I had scheduled a c-section like originally asked. I will not be going back to this vet. Do not trust them at all. read more

Do not take ur pet here! They will gouge you knowing these are our fur babies! I took our 1 yr old cat to our usual vet which was 101 Pet Vet this morning for a sudden limp on his back paw. Dr was available, but refused to examine my cat unless I agreed to their "emergency fee" of $150 which did not include the exam fee. This is not during emergency hours this was after they opened and had zero patients in the office. For reals! I asked how much the ultrasound would be on top of the $150 emergency fee and the exam fee and the vet tech said she couldn't quote me a price!?!? MAJOR RED FLAGS! So we FIRED 101 Pet Vet never to return! Called up The Animal Doctor who took us right away as a new patient and everything was $85! EXCELLENT CARE! We are VERY happy with The Animal Doctor! I really love coming to 101 pet vet! I personally love when my kitty's see Dr. Spence! Dr. Spence is such a caring person and a great listener. I always have a list of questions to asks and he takes the time to answer all of them and clears any doubt I may have. One of my cats is very aggressive at the vet and usually his past Drs have put him to sleep to examine him however, Dr. Spence will not if it is not necessary which made me appreciate his care for my kitty's even more! read more
