We were pleasantly greeted by a lady at the counter who explained what to expect. We decided to go outside to the patio for our tasting and also a charcuterie board. The board was nicely done. Our server, Valente (Val) did a wonderful job explaining each pour and answered all our questions with authority. He's a fine young man who obviously enjoys his work and the wine industry. We enjoyed the wines and the whole experience so much we decided to become wine club members. There is a very nice B&B located next to the winery and we have already made reservations at the B&B for the September pickup party. Fredericksburg is a short drive from the winery and will make a nice two or more day trip. The wines are exceptionally good. Texas is really making some good wines.

We chose to sit outside on the shaded deck, which was expansive and peaceful--a great way to ease into the weekend. The staff was friendly, and we selected a flight tailored to our preferences. The wine was enjoyable, and we ended up purchasing a few bottles at what felt like fair prices. Nothing quite wowed me enough to join the club or grab a case, but still a pleasant tasting overall. My only real critique is that our server could have been a bit more attentive. While we weren't in a rush, he didn't seem to be either. All in all, a relaxing stop with good wine and great scenery. What I like about small vineyards is they have the freedom to experiment and create a variety of wines and blends using different varieties and winemaking styles. This innovation leads to fresh and evolving tasting experiences that keep wine interesting, exciting, and perhaps most importantly, personal. Small vineyards also focus on quality and sustainable farming, and produce smaller quantities of wine. This locally owned small vineyard has bold reds and crisp whites and breathtaking views at sunset. For my partner, I purchased a bottle of the 2019 Mourvèdre. This vino is smokey and bold with cholocatre undertones. This vino will pair well with steak and other red meats. While I am not a fan of reds, the quality and legs on this vino is undeniable. I purchased a glass of 2021 Barrel Aged Trebbiano which was reminiscent of a Cabernet Sauvignon blanc. Cabernet Blanc wines have a flavor profile that's similar to a mix of Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. They can be dry, but some are made to be slightly sweet. This Trebbiano was more dry that sweet which I adore. Aside from the vinos, the sunset views when sitting on the deck are stunning. My partner and I sat and watched the sun go down with glasses in hand. The vino coupled with the views made this outing magical. This is just the type of winery we like - family owned and personal. They've also been winning awards, which is exciting to see. Why a "gluten free review"? Well thankfully, wine is gluten free! Calais Winery is easy to miss as it sits right off 290 between Johnson City and Fred. Look for the French Flag. The cave is an intimate setting and you are surrounded by their French Oak wine barrels. It is cool in there. We learned during our private tasting that they have been producing their limited production wines since 2008. The winemaker is a French-born engineer-turned-winemaker, Benjamin Calais. Even though the wine is produced using Texas grapes Calais uses old school French traditions when producing his wines. Our tasting included their Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and even a Rose'. The Left and Right Bank Bordeaux rivaled any Cab that we have sampled in Fred or Napa. The 2020 Gravitas red blend was an absolute joy to sample and it was one of the wines that traveled home with us. From their best harvests they select the 10 best barrels in the winery and produce Gravitas. It is unbelievably complex and if you enjoy a fuller than full bodied wine you will love Gravitas. We caught a live performance by a young musician, and our dog got plenty of attention from other patrons. We left with branded swag to take back to California. Husband and wife owners, Rarig and Ellery, were kind enough to show us around and even took us on a tour of Main Street! Both are knowledgeable about wines and Fredericksburg, but also landscaping, raising children, dolls, ancient history, relics and artifacts, time travel, and more. We'll be coming back for sure!

THE BLACK AND WHITE: We originally visited their main tasting room in Fredericksburg but glad that they have their wine room in Hye (closer to us as we're coming in from Austin). Coordinates focuses on South African wines however are sourcing more and more grapes from the Texas High Plains. We had a tasting of their Reserve red wines which included the pinotage, cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, and the shiraz. I'm a big pinot guy and the pinotage hit harder than the pinot, so we ordered a bottle of that and enjoyed it in their sit down area with a couple of other regulars. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall a bottle of the reserve pinotage was ~$49 with a reserve red tastings (4 wines) starting at $25. Fun ambiance and will be back to try more South African wines.
