If you're looking for the BEST dog-friendly (and people-friendly) wine tasting room in the Fredericksburg/290 area, Hye Meadow Winery is it! I did a ton of research on pup-friendly tasting rooms prior to our trip and I'm so glad this place popped up on my radar. You can easily make a reservation on their website that gets you an inside or outdoor space for a tasting that is dog and kid friendly. Since it's August, and hot as heck, my husband and I (and our two dogs, Jake and Finn) were so thankful and grateful our reservation got us a space inside their super cute (and air-conditioned) tasting room. Not only were the wines delicious (we bought a bottle of Tempranillo) but we also loved the sandwiches and cheese boards. The indoor space is a good size (and cute and comfy!) and the outdoor space is huge. There are outdoor fans and a great grass area (sans sticker burrs) where our babes were able to run around, which is so hard to find this time of year. Delaney was our wine pourer Friday and again on Sunday when we came back because we loved it so much. She was so welcoming, friendly and excited/knowledgeable about the wine, which made us too! There were a couple of other super friendly staffers there both days (I'm sorry I didn't get your names!) who made our visits such great experiences. It was truly the best case scenario for us. Cute little winery we had not tried yet. Tasting flights of 6 range from $25-30 depending on varietals. Great variety. Really loved the Callo blanco. Great white and even though it was dry, not too dry. Outdoor patio was perfect for us to bring the kids and they even had connect four. Menu is limited but the basics for winery fare. Was a quick stop in for us at 5:30 PM. Fallan was so nice to still accommodate us. She was knowledgeable & friendly. They seemed to have a great close staff. Dog friendly which was a huge plus for us since we had our girls. The property looked beautiful from what we could see since it was a little dark. I'm traveling with little kids and needed a spot to enjoy some wine and views. This place comes with the added benefit of having some live animals on site. The donkeys were friendly and came to greet us. Unfortunately no apples or feed were available for us to give to them but the kids still got the interact and enjoy the experience. Near the oak tree area there were also some games for the kids to enjoy which was very nice to let's us parents sit and enjoy some wine. The wine which I had was quite good. I have had the opportunity to visit this winery on many occasions. My favorite reason for going is the team members in particular Kyrstyn (hope I spelled it right). The Boom wine is my favorite a bold and flavorful. There is a great patio to sit on and they have entertainment (check schedule). There is also good food service. Tim our server was excellent. We had the place to ourselves this Monday morning at opening (11am). He offered us 4-5 free tastings before we decided, and even gave us apple slices to feed the friendly donkeys out back. He's an expert on wildlife conservation and can give some recommendations regarding local animal-supporting activities. I enjoyed my sweet white "Saturn," and my wife liked the semi-sweet "Chica." The wine was pretty good overall. My girlfriend and I did the Blended Tasting with a mix of white a red wines. So far I'm this area it is the best around. The service was on point. A very good winery in Hye, one of the blink-and-you'll-miss-it small towns along the 290, on the way into Fredericksburg. Hye Meadow seems to specialize in 'blended' wines, for example their excellent 'Junkyard White' being a blend of Reisling and two other mild whites. The 'Junkyard' and the Edelzwicker were the top picks according to the server we chatted with, and I'd agree - very good sipping wine. Though many people here like the interior, I found it a bit too modernistic and bare-bones for my taste. However, the outdoor patio space out back is heavenly, and a must-visit for those who stop in. The highlight for me was spending time out here with a glass and their spectaular cheese plate. Definitely worth your time to visit if you're cruising the 290 'Wine Corridor' and want some 'me time'! read more

So the first time we came, we got some really rude servers. It was also really overcrowded and rainy that day so it basically sucked all around. But we just made another visit, on a quiet February day when it was freezing cold, and we had a lovely visit as the only customers. Service was really nice, we sat inside where it was toasty warm, and the wine was great. Full Monte(pulciano) was our favorite, although there were several great options. The food is average (hummus doesn't taste like hummus) but the wines vary from average to above average in the tasting flight. We did the production tour and tasting and it was absolutely amazing. Justin did a great job explaining all the different processes that go into making the different wines. Love this winery and wine! There is a ton of outdoor space with lots of trees and the dry rose is fantastic! The wife and I usually get to 290 through Fredericksburg so we don't make it down this far east. Today we were heading to Marble Falls to meet the grandparents and had some time to kill. We both got a tasting. I loved the rose - it was unfiltered and not sweet like most rose. Also had a couple good refs and one I wouldn't get again (junkyard). The inside is quite small but the outside has lots of shade and a couple decks. There were a few folks with kids too and they have plenty of space to run around. One table brought their dog. One of my favorite questions to inquire of a winery owner is what made you want to open a winery? Nearly every Texas winery or vineyard owner has a great story. And the owners of Hye Meadow Winery are no exception. The property has both an indoor and outdoor tasting room. The outdoors is designed to accommodate the winery tour buses on busy weekends. The winery showcases live music and a food trailer on Saturdays. The indoor tasting room has a large tasting bar at the center and the walls are lined with chalkboards with both witty and sometimes cheesy plays on the word "Hye". Tastings are $10 a person and you get your choice of one of two set tastings of about 6-8 wines. If you buy two bottles they waive one tasting fee. You also can purchase a bottle to enjoy on their patio or on the swinging chairs playfully hanging from trees on their property. I enjoyed the wines here and I do not like most Texas wines so that says a lot. The employee that gave us our tasting was super friendly and knowledgeable about the tasting notes and where the grapes are grown. Mike the owner is down to Earth and enjoyable to chat with. He was kind enough to offer us a taste of one of their small barrel wines which was a rose Dolcetto. Speaking of Dolcetto it was one of my favorites of their wines. We bought a bottle of the Dolcetto and The Junkyard Red made of 100% Texas grapes (55% Mourvedre, 38% Merlot, 7% Tempranillo). Tip: They have free Hye WiFi read more

This was the first and favorite Texas winery we visited. The building is new and offers a relaxed patio view with a delightful woman sharing extensively about all six of the wines. There was just a happy appreciation of wine and a genuine desire to both share and teach. Attitude matters so much when welcoming people to wine appreciation and this place showed enjoyment and respect without being uptight. We're Californians with lots of experience at many wineries up and down the state and that is what I am comparing the Texas wineries with my past experiences. We are on vacation wearing t-shirts and at one other winery in this area it felt as though we were riff raff LOL. This place isn't going to look down at anyone, they don't have to play games they are offering some great new twists and as soon as they get paperwork to ship into CA I will be ordering some of the Junk Yard Red! After reading all of the great reviews about this place I have to say I was a little skeptical that they were all real - but out of about 10 wineries that we visited, it ended up being our favorite. The wines were very good, the pours were pretty generous, and the staff was super friendly and very knowledgeable. One of our favorite things was the big windows overlooking the land in the back - very pretty and nice to look at while tasting. Tasting fees are waived with the purchase of 2 bottles and the wine was so good that we did buy 2. Would definitely go back and put this on the top of my list to visit next time I'm here. read more
