We stopped in at 128 Pecan recently and really enjoyed the experience. The restaurant is tucked inside a cute little house, which gives it a warm, cozy ambience that feels welcoming right away. The menu has a nice variety of options. I went with the Caesar salad, which was fresh and superb. My husband ordered the Cuban sandwich with onion rings, and both were excellent. Everything came out hot and in a reasonable amount of time. Our waitress was fantastic -- attentive, friendly, and very flexible when we had a couple of special requests. Prices for the entrées seemed on the higher side for a small town, but there are plenty of soups, sandwiches, and other more affordable choices on the menu. Portions are generous and the quality is solid, so it feels like a fair value, especially if you're treating yourself for a special occasion. The food was very good. We arrived on a Tuesday at 12:30 and were greeted by prominent signage that "no tables were to be seated until the full party had arrived." I suppose proximity to the Va Creeper Trail encouraged this as I could see folk holding up a table whilst waiting would be a potential issue. We were seated promptly and given menus and served water and sodas. The rock music was pretty loud for the restaurant, which has some smaller rooms that are serviceable but cramped and a bit echoey and dark. By 12:35 our order was in and by 12:51 on our table. The table has a nice individual light, and a bottle of water on the table. Unlike some other local restaurants, soda refills are free and a pitcher was brought by the table to serve refills of diet coke. What was not good was the large beer poster of the St Paulie Girl with her nipples hanging out. I realize these are beer posters and I realize they are German and things are different there. But this was a prominently placed poster. I just wouldn't think a place where a lot of families dine would put this in such a prominent spot, or any spot really. I'm not a super prude, I just raised three sons. So the sandwich though, was very good. read more

My food was fantastic. The service was awesome. I love the homemade blue cheese dressing. And other than wanting cracked black pepper on my salad, everything was seasoned extremely well. All in all a good experience...BUT, let me make a few suggestions. Please expand your Bar stock. I asked for two basic liquors and you had neither. Clean the salt and pepper shakers on the table...the top of the salt shaker was a turn off. No Peppermill?...really! I had the Parmesan crusted grouper with wild rice and spinach. VERY tasty. The rice and spinach combination is something I really like and it was very well seasoned. But please chiffonade the spinach. A quaint little spot tucked to the side of a less busy street; it's eclectic and has great food! I snagged a table on the patio on a mild afternoon, and enjoyed the Oyster Tacos with fries. We stopped for the night in Abingdon VA on our way south. We sought out a local restaurant and the hotel desk clerk recommended this place. It is a small eclectic place displaying many accumulated treasures of the owner. We shared the hush puppies which have a hint of jalapeño which added a bit of a savoryness. The smash burger was good and the sides of coleslaw and home cut fries were a bonus. The Spinach and feta quesadilla was tasty. Save room for the desert the brown butter pecan cake with a scoop of butter pecan ice cream topped with caramel sauce was decedent. The service was attentive. The prices are quite reasonable. Yikes! Ratings are high and locals seem to like it so keep that in mind. The service was good, people are friendly, and decor and vibe are great. However... I paid $62 (with tip) for two overcooked and tasteless burgers, a plate of lettuce, and two tap beers. I think this was a case of poor timing. I was told that they change the menu often, and I know most restaurants don't have their best chefs/cooks working during the middle of the week. I hate to give it a three but that was the experience. That said, I think this is a case of my personal experience not matching the overall experience for most people. I expect this would be higher than a three and somewhat worth the price on the weekend. Oh, one more thing... They prepare their sandwiches early in the morning and then just press them prior to serving. Not a plus. So, yeah ... maybe a three. Such a cute find. Thanks Yelp! We were seated right away and had the choice of inside or out. We chose outside. It was plenty cool and it was covered. Our server came right away and we both ordered unsweetened tea. We decided to split an appetizer of jalapeño hush puppies and we also split the crabcake sandwich. We chose the fresh cut fries as our side. We LOVED the hush puppies! And we also thoroughly enjoyed our sandwich and fries. We weren't excited about the taste of the tea- most likely not fresh brewed. I wouldn't ding them for it though because everything else was great! The service was excellent. The ambiance was pretty unique, like a patchwork of styles in a patched together house. The hushpuppies were my favorite - very tasty and would definitely order more. The cauliflower was ok. This spot doesn't have too many vegetarian options really, so I think that's why I wasn't a huge fan. I went here on a Saturday evening, there was 1 small party going on but other than that it wasn't busy. The decor was really nice. I got the crab cake sandwich, it was alright but not very flavorful & they didn't have any cocktail sauce either. They were nice enough to let me have the hush puppies as my side. You could taste jalapeños but the cornmeal wasn't sweet at all like a traditional one so we weren't much of a fan. My dinner companion got the shrimp tacos & said they totally lacked flavor. We got a butter cake to share which was delicious but would've been better if our waitress didn't let the ice cream melt so much. It was so frustrating bc we could see the kitchen & saw it was ready for roughly 10 minutes before she brought it out to us. She was doing everything but coming to us or the kitchen, like just talking to her coworkers. I was just about to get it myself & then she even said "oops sorry it melted a bit." We stopped in on a Thursday for a late lunch. 128 Pecan is rustic chic, in my opinion. The restaurant was pretty busy, but we didn't have to wait too long for a table. I'll start off with the pros. The guy manning the bar and seating people was so engaging and you could tell he cared that you were having a good time. Our waitress was also amazing--she stayed on top of everything and once again, wanted to make sure that your dining experience was a great one. For food, the golden calamari was seriously cooked to perfection (can't remember the last time we've had it cooked so skillfully) and the parm fries were addicting. For entrees we went with the blackened chicken BLT, blackened chicken tacos and 128 smoked chicken salad. The chicken was nice and juicy in each entrée. Cons. Lack of parking. Website menu doesn't match menu in restaurant (would have gotten sesame fried oyster tacos shown on website, but they weren't on the menu at the restaurant). The Texas Ranch dressing for the salad should have been thicker to somewhat adhere to lettuce and also should have come with a spice warning (I normally order Thai food extra spicy, so maybe this batch was "off"?). read more

There are enough reviews covering the basics. The food is decent, our meals (calamari, cauliflower, cobb salad, smashburger) were good enough and matched the price. The service we got on a Thursday (1800-ish, filling in but not crowded) was well done. If we lived here would certainly come back- no real complaints. I've never run a restuarant (worked at a few in my youth), I have travelled quite a bit (grew up in a small VA town), joined the Army and saw the world as they say. That out of the way, I'd like to offer some thoughts about the paradoxes that 128 Pecan/Jacks 128 Pecan? present to me (and Abingdon writ large as well) In the walk up to/in there was for me a distinct "beach vibe" although closest water is a river along the Creeper Trail that we were in town to enjoy. The wooden decking and weathered handrails whispered Key West in my memory. There is an outside patio. Interestingly we were not offered seating there as an option, perhaps they don't think brown folk like to eat outside (for this one that is 100% accurate bias...I've eaten outside plenty in life and it is not associated with good times in my mind. We were then seated in this nicely (if eclectically decorated) four table room. The furnishings made me feel like I should have worn a jacket, instead of just a polo and golf pants. Of course later I saw others in shorts and ratty t-shirts (including employees, a bit more on that later). There were people in all manner of dress (some heading to Theater later perhaps). Here then is my first bit of soft "confusion", is this a beach bar or a low country gentile dining establishment? I don't think they are sure either. It clearly works, and fills a niche in the marketplace so they don't need to change anything based on what I type. I do however remain unsettled at a place with coasters on the ceiling of the bar, and champagne bottles, antique buffet cabinets in the next room. The second thing is a menu that seems half food network gal showing off and half Triple D. While its cool that jalapeno hush puppies and chicken florentine exist in the same room...should they? Last bit and then I will let you kids have the lawn. We were seated , had gotten our drinks (quickly), when I noticed a kitchen guy bring some clean dishes out to the buffet that serves as a waiters station (oddly with the bussing bin sitting there as well). He looked like he had just finished a quick 9 holes with his buddies at the public course; shorts, spotty T-shirt, sneakers and dirty ball cap. Our server was casualy dressed with an apron (the only one I saw). Every employee was in whatever they had felt like covering themselves in that day. While that is certainly fine, and suits the beach bar vibe- it, for me, clashes with the elegant dining establishment atmosphere that coexists, uneasily. Maybe keep the casual come as you are but servers get a logo apron, and kitchen staff get a t-shirt/chef jacket? What do I know though. It's a nice place, I enjoyed it and would come back. My neurosis is my problem, not 128 Pecan or is it Jack's 128 Pecan...okay I'm stopping now. read more
