Well located in the heart of Abingdon, directly across from the Barter Theater inside "The Martha" hotel. Excellent experience, except for the Bar; more on that later. The dining room has a formal appearance but can be a bit noisy if it is busy. My wife and I were guests of a business associate. Seven in our party. Our server was professional and courteous but obviously relatively new and didn't know what brands the bar stocked, a minor issue. The quality of the bar drinks was very poor. My "dry" martini was anything by dry and it was "weak", almost like it was watered down. I should have sent it back but since we were guests of a business associate, I didn't want to complain. Later in evening our host mentioned that his Manhattan was also weak and had a strange taste. We normally would have ordered a second cocktail but drank water instead. My wife had the "Surf and Turf". The filet mignon steak was one of the best she's ever eaten. Perfectly cooked. The "surf" however was almost a joke. It was a small crab cake that had more filler than crab but tasted okay. Next time we'll order just the steak. We will likely return in the future but probably only if the other "tavern" style restaurant isn't open. read more

Our first experience at Sister's Restaurant was delightful because of our server, Katie. She knew it was our 41st wedding anniversary celebration and she did her best to make it perfect. There clearly was a snafu going on in the kitchen, but it did not deter Katie and her excellent service, professionalism and friendliness. Her beautiful calm demeanor was unshakeable. We will return to Sister's and ask for Katie. Also, I must mention that the breakfast at Sister's, which is included in your stay at the Martha Washington, was extraordinary - absolutely delicious. Again, one of the best parts was the service given to us by Alisha and Karen. They were both so sweet, kind, and accommodating. They made you feel very much "at home" while having breakfast in the restaurant. read more

Wanted to plan a small intimate evening for my parent's anniversary. Was looking to have around 14 people or less in attendance. My husband and I tried calling the restaurant/Inn multiple times. We left messages for the event coordinator with staff that were extremely friendly but could never get a return call. We finally asked if they actually had an event coordinator working there which they assured us they did. It was a month of nothing from them. Unfortunately, I cannot rate the food or the ambiance of the establishment because we could never go. However, I can say that customer service is everything and if you can't call a customer back then your service is definitely not up to par. Luckily, I found another very nice establishment that I called and was able to book my evening within about 15 min. It was so seamless and easy it made me wonder why I wasted so much time on Sister's. read more

After we were seated, it became clear no one server "owned" our table. Several servers were piecemeal handling our table and the end result was a poor experience for my family. Our food (nothing terribly complicated) took over an hour to arrive, and even then they forgot one person's entree. That took another 15 minutes to come out. We had reservations for 5:15 (before a 7:30 Barter show) and felt rushed at the end. They did comp us 25%, which was a nice thought, but I'd much rather have enjoyed a nice dinner and service. We have been coming to the Martha and dinning at Sisters for well over a decade. And yes, the restaurant has gone through several changes. The more elegant days of a five course meal in secluded tiny private dinner rooms is gone. We had dinner at Sisters last night, and the atmosphere is bright and cheerful; less formal, but still sophisticated. The service was impeccable. And the wine choices are select but impressive. Now-- don't judge the quality of the restaurant by the quantity of menu choices. It is a small menu; however, everything that we had was wonderful. My wife had the fried green tomatoes and the chicken Marsala. Both were delicious and well seasoned. The portions are generous. I had the beet salad and fish and chips. Try the salad! It was unique but such a light and delicate way to begin a meal. As far as the fish... I was impressed. A large portion of cod that was fried with a crisp exterior and a flakey center. I loved it! We will definitely be back, and encourage others to give it a try. read more

Best meal we had during our three day stay in Abingdon! I ate the salmon with gnocchi, and it was delicious! My husband had the funky beet salad with salmon, and he loved it as well. Service was good as well as the ambiance. Because we were staying at The Martha Washington Inn, we had a $50 voucher which was a bonus! Since it has been a year since anyone reviewed this restaurant in the Martha Washington Inn on Yelp, allow me to announce the good news. Both a new head chef and a new pastry chef have made this spot a very pleasant surprise. I had serious doubts and low expectations going in, given that the hotel is creaky and in need of attention. I went into dinner thinking it might be, at best, passable. All expectations were exceeded. First, Sarah was the perfect server- friendly but not overly familiar, prompt but not oppressive. She was there when we needed her. The gold rush cocktail has a Jim Beam base, which I would not pick but worked well. The addition of Tuaca to the drink was a nice touch I will try at home. Wife got the Jasmine Sour and we thought it was a sophisticated sipper that we would get again. Bread was homemade and in a variety that you rarely see anywhere. Apps for us were the wings and the shrimp and crab cocktail. The cocktail was a little soupy for us, but the wings had a nice smoky flavor. I got the rack of lamb and enjoyed it thoroughly. Fresh mint leaves and blackberries showed a level of care that is too rare these days. Meat was cooked perfectly and the portion was generous. Expertly roasted carrots sang along. The fat of the pork belly entree was well rendered and paired well with its sauce. The mac and cheese had a pleasant surprise waiting for us- a kick of heat that set it off nicely. The brussels sprouts,as they do everywhere I go, fell far short of my wife's. Considering that Ina Garten's recipe is on the internet, this seems inexcusable. But alas, if the world wants to eat crunchy bland sprouts, who am I to stop them? We loosened our belts and got dessert, and that is when the meal hit high gear. I am a rhubarb lover. So to be served a homemade rhubarb custard pie of this magnitude is to be blasted to the moon and back. I exclaimed aloud and in astonishment, "Someone cared about this crust!" The rhubarb was carmelized and chewy and so full of flavor I pounded the table. We bid Sarah goodnight and will fondly remember or night at Sisters. read more

Mediocre. I don't mind paying for nice food, but the whole restaurant should reflect the higher price and Sisters has gone downhill. The menu is very small. There are no seasonal items on it. Nothing interesting. The appetizer we had, a salmon mousse, was just mediocre. The mushroom soup was delicious, that was the only highlight. The ribeye steaks were good, but they were not prime cuts and not worth the $47 price each. It's like the restaurant has lost all of its mojo or umph. If you're going to Abingdon to have a special meal, don't bother with Sisters. Go somewhere else. It's no longer worth the price. Disappointing! I really hope they read this review and either get a new chef or do something to perk up the existing one. read more

We dined here on Sunday evening, a group of six. They gave us the nicest partioned area in the corner of the restaurant, so nice. The food was incredible and the service was impeccable! Recommend. We chose this restaurant because we were staying at the Inn in which it resides, and we were very happy with our decision. On a February Friday night, it was uncrowded, uncomplicated and very relaxing. Service was prompt and pleasant. The ambience was calm and quiet - no TV's, no loud music, no loud guests. Omnivore had the beef ribeye with mashed potatoes and asparagus - declared it delicious and cleaned the plate. Vegetarian had to choose from the small plates menu - the home made chips were good, but the blue cheese dip was divine. The spinach-artichoke dip was uninspiring and very spinach-y. Beer selections on tap were awesome - Green Man Porter and Three Notches 40 mile IPA. The next night, while we wanted to try dinner elsewhere, we came here to hangout and have some beers. Breakfast the next day was egg casserole, biscuits & gravy, yogurt/fruit/granola, and grilled tomatoes. There were no choices - breakfast varies by day, and I was skeptical, but it was all delicious. Mixing those grilled tomatoes with the egg casserole - yum! (Would be 5 stars if there were more veg options.) read more

Good grief what a fantastic meal! Fried green tomatoes with roasted tomatoes and Basil sauce, amazing. Rack of lamb on heavenly sweet potato purée for my husband and zucchini, squash eggplant ratatouille in fresh pastry crust for me. All served by a busy but attentive wait staff who aimed to please. The pièce de résistance vanilla creme brûlée with fresh berries was almost too much, but we were happy to help eat our way through the new menu crafted by clearly talented chef/s. We had dinner here before seeing the show. We made a note to let our server know we had a timetable (5:30 reservation, mind you), but I might as well been talking to the wall, there was no urgency in her step. Other than that, the food was good, nothing spectacular. I had the shrimp and scallops, she had the salmon. Farm raise salmon, but I guess that is to be expected so far from the coast. Caesar salad starter was great. The decor was nice, the crowd fairly quiet. We did make the show opening, but just, the lights were dimming. read more

I came to Sister's for dinner with a 10 year old child before attending a play at The Barter, fully aware of their menu that doesn't really cater to children. It was a quiet atmosphere with excellent service. My only complaint would be the lack of variety. An elegant experience of service and made to order food in a historical and beautiful hotel. The house made chips are delicious as an appetizer as well as the deviled eggs. We had a number of different salads, soup and different entree items to try as a group. My favorite items would include the crab bisque soup and sisters burger. My wife and I dined there last night, it had been awhile since we'd been there, and it was a great experience. The menu has been redone and its creative and extremely well prepared. Good wine list at reasonable prices. Service was warm and friendly, and they have switched to the "no tipping" policy that I've seen gaining traction elsewhere. I'll admit that I didn't order food that was in their "Sweet Spot", but when you're located in "The Martha" and charge what they charge for everything (well, because they're in The Martha) everything should be spot on. The by-the-glass selection of wines was below average (one of nearly every kind of varietal, but average quality) , menu selection was decent, their burgers looked outstanding (didn't try one as I was just looking for light aps), but what our group did try (three different items) were honestly average - ranging from good to cr@p. The Spinach and Fruit Salad: we thought very good. The Cheese plate: you're kidding.. they ran down to Food City for this one (which insults Food City). And lastly, the Salmon Flatbread: After eating this, you'd rather eat dog food... no really. You'll read this on the menu, say to yourself "This sounds great, all the ingredients are great, so it must be great".... and then wonder how a kitchen can eF something up like this. It's so bad that I had to hold my breath so I couldn't taste it. It's a shame as this should be incredible.. .Y'all can thank me later for not ordering it. Yes, that bad. So bad we ordered the aforementioned Food City Cheese Plate so we could have something edible other than the Spinach and Fruit salad. We had dinner and breakfast. The ambiance was nice, a grand old hotel, and the service was good. The food itself was mediocre. Better than a typical cafe, but nothing at all special. Pasta with sausage: meat was somewhat dry, pasta was ho-hum. Pho had almost 1/4 cup of canned jalepenos on top of it with linguini noodles. Pizza was on a cracker-like crust with a buffalo type sauce over the top and overly sweet BBQ sauce. Breakfast was, again, sort of OK, but nothing at all special or distinct. Coffee was like what you get from a in-room hotel coffeepot. Overall, I don't think the food was worthy of the setting or the prices (18-40+ for entrees). read more

Everything about the Martha Washington is so lovely. My kids and I enjoyed our stay immensely....except for the food at Sisters. It's really a shame that the restaurant serves such bad food because it has such potential. Unfortunately, with each plate we ate (or didn't eat) we could taste the frozen servings heated in a microwave. Blah. I would highly recommend saving your tastebuds for a lovely meal at the Wild Birch or a wonderful coffee and treat at Zazzy'Z both of which are waking distance from the hotel. read more

This place is fine for soup, salad or a sandwich, but that's it. We had dinner at Sisters on a Friday night before a show at the Bartlet, and it was terrible. We started with and sent back the antipasti platter of cheeses (2 BIG chunks of blue and about 1T of boursin or something similar. No italian cheeses.), meats (bologna - not mortadella - proscuitto that was over the hill, and salami), seafood (lox) and naan (so stale or dried out in a warming drawer that you couldn't bend it at all. With effort, you could snap it like a cracker.) We shared the crab bisque which was tasty. Wedge salad was fine. Husband's spinach salad was good. As an entree, I had the fried green tomato BLT. I don' think it had two full slices of bacon on it, and it was on lackluster white bread that could have come from the grocery store. Not terrible though. My husband had the mussels in coconut curry sauce. The sauce tasted like bechamel with a little spice islands curry powder added to it. Very thick with no hint of coconut. And the mussels, which I suspect are frozen, aren't cooked in the "curry." They appear to have been drying out and shrivelling in a warming drawer and were plated around the sauce. The same rock hard naan as the antipasti platter was served with the mussels. It's a shame that such a beautiful property as the Martha doesn't have a nice restaurant. Very disappointing. If you want a good meal, I would recommend the far more casual but MUCH better 123 Pecan or the Tavern. read more

We did not stay at the Martha, but wanted an opportunity to visit, so we booked dinner at Sister's. The atmosphere is quiet, and the clientele on the older side. The wine list was decent. Not great, but acceptable. The food was hit and miss. The pumpkin soup was delicious. My husband enjoyed a classic caesar salad. My husband had a filet that he enjoyed. Nothing special, but well prepared and presented. I ordered off of the appetizer and salad lists and was, well, underwhelmed. For the price and location, I would have expected a much better meal. The portions were ample. However, the appetizer seemed like a frozen food from the grocery store and the salad was an odd mix of foods that had been dumped from jars. I was disappointed in the quality of the food. On the up side, our server was friendly, efficient and attentive. read more

We recently had dinner here after a show at the Barter. It was not our first choice, by far, but most restaurants near the theatre are closed on Sundays. Frankly, I was embarrassed that I had made the reservation for my husband and I, as well as another couple. The food was very expensive, given the quality of food. We started with a cheese plate that was quite poor. My husband and I each had the $40 filet, which was quite tasteless and overcooked. No soup or salad is served with the meal. My husband ordered an $11 wedge salad that was totally uneventful for the price. He loves wedge salads, but seriously, $11? The service was very slow, despite a small crowd at dinner.
