We went to an adoption event they were having this weekend and we fell in love with a pair of kittens filled out the adoption application so we could meet them. Spoke with the owner for about thirty minutes before even heading inside to meet them to give her the baseline of things that typically raise concerns to cat rescues. We have two dogs, live in a studio, and they would stay in the bathroom while getting acclimated to us and the dogs. We let the rescue team know both dogs grew up around cats and have never shown any issues and they know to go to the door for potty time (ensuring the back door would not be left open for the cats safety). During this conversation I heavily emphasized and talked about my Pitty mix because she is off weird with people and we won't push that but she has never shown any signs of aggression towards other animals. They were very open to our situation and told us they do a "trial" period to ensure a smooth transition for the cats and even if it doesn't work out after the three weeks we can hand them back over with no ties. We were super excited to find a rescue that seemed open and willing to work with us. I have been the pet industry for over six years so I know how finicky cat rescues can be sometimes and was super excited to thought I have found some place different. We spent 45 minutes looking at the cats and they were absolutely adorable and we wanted to go through with the adoption process. We talked to the owner she approved our application and we set up at time for Monday for her to drop off the cats to us. We were told we would be getting a text from the foster that same evening confirming drop off time and sending over some pictures of the kittens. We didn't get anything that night knowing they were running the adoption event through the weekend and they may be busy we decided to send an inquiry email Sunday at around 3:40 pm. We didn't get a message back until almost 9pm on Sunday. The rescue staff knew both of us worked Monday-Friday so meet up would have to be after than. We went to the pet store on Saturday to buy the basic cat necessities and once we got a message confirming the meeting and that we would be receiving the cats we would order the bigger things (cat tree, things for outside of the bathroom, etc.) but given we weren't texted until 9pm the night before everything had not arrived or is now arriving today (Tuesday). When the foster arrived to our home we immediately felt judgment due to the location of our home. Before entering our home the foster asked to meet the dogs we allowed for her to meet one but again with my pit mix she is ultimately nervous around people and it's not worth stressing her out and the foster let us know that was a "concern" for her but ultimately something I didn't feel comfortable stressing my dog out for. After entering the home it just felt like a very judged and invasive process. Under the impression based on the interactions with the dogs she would not be leaving the cats with us she still proceeded to take pictures of our home which we do not know if they have been deleted or not. Ultimately I do not blame the rescue or the foster as I believe they are doing what they believe is best for the cats but I do also want to warn people that the adoption process was very very invasive and left us with an overall icky feeling. They got our hopes up and seemed super welcoming and willing to work with and then completely flipped when it came to meeting at our home and we were judged for a number of reasons. We set up our home for two new additions and still have materials being delivered to our home with no use now. Ultimately we just find it very rude and distasteful. read more

I recently applied to adopt a kitten and reached out to her foster. I was very interested and excited, as I have a large home I own and years of experience caring for cats throughout their entire lives. I was surprised to be told to "pursue other kitties with other rescues." I completely understand if the kitten I applied for was ultimately a better fit for a home with other cats, and I respect making placement decisions in the animal's best interest. But the way this was communicated felt dismissive and unnecessarily hurtful. This experience has put me off from working with this rescue again. I hope all their sweet cats do find wonderful homes, but I can't recommend this organization based on how adopters are treated. read more

We recently discovered a feral cat has been living in our front yard, under our bay window. I suppose she turned into a long-term tenant once we started leaving food out for her. It wasn't until I started googling what we should do for feral cats that I learned about TNR. Well, lo and behold, the San Jose shelter's online appointment system showed no openings for two months in a row, and we were starting to see our new tenant mating (oh the wonders of Ring cameras). I reached out to 13th St Cats, and Cassie and Laura helped us our tremendously, first with arranging to loan us a trap and instructing us on how to trap the cat, and getting us an appointment at the shelter when there was a cancellation. We were able to get our feral cat fixed, all in a day's work. I really appreciate the work 13th St Cat Rescue is doing to cut down on the overpopulation of cats, but also to help us care for the cats that are already out there. It was very apparent that Laura and Cassie care very much about the work they're doing. I'm very thankful for them, and for 13th St Cat Rescue. read more

I emailed 13th Street Rescue and received a prompt response (I had previously emailed two organizations prior and never received a response). The process was so easy and I was able to borrow and pickup the trap the very next day from Cassie! She was very thorough and helpful in explaining the process of trapping the cats. She also provided me with great resources on where to bring the cats once they entered the trap. Using her tips, I was able to trap the cats quickly and effortlessly and I'm so thankful! I was involved in helping trap several feral cats at a friend's house recently, their review is also here (incorrectly and stupidly marked as "not recommended" - it's fair, accurate and honest so go figure) andd I'd concur that the trap-neuter and release program is outstanding. The person who trapped and cared for the cats and saw them released back, was exceptionally considerate and caring and willing to give up time at any hour to rescue the cats. 110% of full marks there. Having said that, they also took in one feral which has been around the property for more than four years and was already spayed, but had an apparently benign growth inside her ear that she'd always had. We took the opportunity on offer, to have her trapped and cared for for free by a vet provided by the cat rescue. The vet removed the growth, which was apparently benign and which did not return, though she still shakes her head. But the cat came back with her third eyelid stuck half way across her eye and the pupil in that eye is now smaller than in the other too. There was nothing wrong with her eye before. We couldn't get any contact with the vet to find out what to do, we weren't told the name of the vet who did the work, just that they didn't think it wise to sedate her further (fair enough) and we should just enjoy her as she is. There was no explanation for her eye condition other than maybe it had something to do with the infection in her ear. They didn't know. Who knows? If the vet doesn't know and won't do further treatment, who else is there to ask? It's months on, now, she still looks the same and I have no idea how damaged her eye is or if there's anything that can be done. We can't afford to take her to a vet, who would charge extra for her being a feral and needing to knock her out to handle her. I feel sad for her and wish we'd never let the mystery vet treat her. Maybe they did the best they could, but who knows. There was no follow up and I got the impression that further questions wouldn't be welcomed. As we gave 5 stars in a review for the rescue service itself, the rating for this one is based on the veterinary treatment and the lack of communications, only. read more

A few weeks ago we completed the adoption of an adorable (and feisty) kitten. Even though the rescue was a bit different in how they operate, they were great to work with. After we submitted an in-depth questionnaire via the website, Janice called us to follow up about some of the questions and talk us through our top 2 choices of kittens. After talking it through, we decided on one that seemed like she would be a good fit the household. We were able to schedule a meeting with the kitten the following day. We got to meet another volunteer who was fostering the kitten and she talked us through her experience with the kitten so far. After meeting with the kitten, we decided that she would definitely be a great fit and went through with the adoption. The team came over for a house inspection and let us know about any hazards that we might have. Although we have cats, it's been a while since they were little so we definitely missed some items. About 2 weeks later they checked in to see how we were doing with the kitten. Overall it was great experience and I'm really thankful for this rescue and their hard work. I reached out on their website about TNR program and got a quick reply that I could borrow a trap for the program from Cassie, she was very helpful on tips and videos of how to trap. If you love cats the TRN program is essential to helping less animals without homes and less animal euthanasia in the shelters. My neighborhood in DTSJ is overpopulated with community and feral cats. I fell so badly for them and I realize the best way to help them is through the trap neuter/spay and return program. I borrowed the trap and was successful at helping spay a cat that recently had a litter of kittens and have also gotten 2 of her kittens spayed and returned to the neighborhood. If you are able to help with TNR please contact your local shelter for details and borrow a trap from 13th ST rescue. It makes a huge difference in the cats life and quality of life - they vaccinate, flea treat and some shelters even chip the cats. Long story short - I wish I could give 13th street 100 stars!! A wonderful organization full of people that really truly care about cats and their wellbeing. Long story :) We have been thinking about adopting a cat to join our lovely senior gal at home, now that she is a fully inside cat and we wanted her to have a companion. That said, bringing a new member of the family home to a 10-year-old only child kitty was a tough ask, and we knew we needed a cat that was relaxed, sweet, not too overbearing to our other cat and the cherry on top would be a playful cat that might encourage our other gal to be a bit more active. We have been looking online and saw Harry on the 13th street website. His bio sounded perfect for us, he's a slightly older guy (8-years) and ready for his forever home. I reached out to Joanne and she was prompt with replying and arranging for us to meet him. We got to go meet Harry on his home turf at 13th street and see the awesome place they have for the cats. All the cats look very well cared for and you can tell they're going the extra mile for them. Needless to say, we fell in love with Harry and arranged with Joanne to bring him home a few days later! I think it's incredible they allow a "trial" type set up because while we desperately wanted Harry to join our family we had to make sure it was ok for our older gal too. 13th street brought Harry to us and after a week of having him at home, we knew the cats were going to make it work and we could officially adopt him. It didn't feel stressful though, or like if it didn't work for our older gal we were giving up on Harry, because he was happy and comfortable at 13th street. It wouldn't have been like taking him back to a cold shelter. Last night Joanne came to our home and we signed the official adoption papers (such proud parents!!) and got all his vet history from 13th street. They took care of full dental work for him and made sure he had all his vaccinations. Joanne even gave him a booster vaccine at our home to make sure he was all up to speed and checked his microchip. I can't say enough great things about how supported we felt through the process and knowing that Harry has been so well looked after just makes us feel so happy. If everything goes on well, they deliver it to your home and help you set it up for the new member. They also gave me a form with vaccination record and vets they recommend. As a new adopter I really appreciate this. I know a lot of friends who love cats. One bought a ragdoll with $1500 that ended up sick and didn't know how to use cat litter. One adopted a tabby from pet***t and found lots of fleas. I went there originally for a Siamese, but then I saw this little angel. It simply doesn't matter anymore. And when Otis arrived home, he was healthy, clean, and well-behaved as a kitten. I know they can be a bit strict about applications, but that's what you do when it's about life. And I promise it is not about how good the environment you can offer is, but how responsible you are. Cannot say enough about the excellent advice and support 13th street cat rescue (San Jose) provided to assist me to catch a beautiful stray girl that had been abandoned in an apartment complex I moved into a year ago! The complex was huge, and this sweet gray/white cat was struggling to survive amidst multiple feral cats. She was friendly, "talkative" and I felt like she picked me right after I moved in! I volunteer with 13th st cats and have had a very fulfilling experience doing so. I primarily help feed feral colonies (a 1-2 hr commitment per week), but over time have been able to help with other things as well. There are regular opportunities for volunteers to help in various areas, including fostering cats, running adoption events, TNR'ing cats, planning & preparing for fundraisers, and more. All the cats in 13th st's care are extremely well cared for and look great. Joanne and her team are simply amazing. I found two kittens while walking my dog. I figured any shelter would be more than happy to take them, but not the case. Apparently, there's been a lot of kittens on the street and shelters don't have the resources to bottle feed them every few hours (keep in mind I learned all of this in the past few days). Most shelters and even rescues said if they took the kittens more than likely the kittens would be put to sleep. I spent all day and night emailing and searching for an organization or a foster who could help me. I was having a hard time caring for the kittens since it was my first time and I was worried that this I'm not as experienced something could easily go wrong. My cousin referred me to Joanne. I emailed her..a little while later I received an email from Jim (volunteer) who said he can take the kitten. OH MY - I WAS SO RELIEVED! It was so stressful not knowing the fate of these little guys. I dropped the kittens at Jim and his wifes place this morning. They're absolutel sweethearts and it was plain and clear that Jim really really loved the kittens and had nothing but their best interest in hand. He's been a life saver and I don't know what I would have done had he not offered to care of the little kittens. I made a donation to help the rescue out. I live in Downtown San Jose and adopted my cat from 13th Street Cats because I knew they were based in my neighborhood. My cat Sylvie is loving and wonderful and I'm so grateful to have her in my life! Their volunteer Joanne was endlessly helpful and answered all my questions after I adopted her. Sylvie was the first pet I adopted as an adult, so I had loads of questions! Shortly after, 13th St Cats volunteers Joanne and Karen, advised me on how to trap and fix the dozens of feral cats multiplying out behind my office. With their help (and the traps I borrowed from the organization) I was able to spay and neuter every single one of them so FINALLY after years and years of having homeless litters of kittens out there, my co-workers and I no longer had a problem! I adopted my first kitty from 13th Street Cat Rescue, and was pleased to give a home to a cat that was in desire need of a home. I adopted a cat who was a rescue cat from a hoarder living in a unhealthy surrounding. My cat has been through several adopters and was given up just because he was shy. But through weeks of patience, I have a super gentle and attention needy cat that loves human companionship. And I was pleased to name my cat Sushi :) I really liked how the staff was attentive, especially Jannice who helped me throughout the process of adopting. They were very informative about the personality and needs of their kittens and cats. And they try to best suit the type of cat that was ideal for myself. They are also protective of the foster cats and kittens, so they ask a lot of questions to make sure I was a suitable owner. This process didn't bother me, since they were just looking out for the best interest for these felines. For my first Elite review, it's going to be a five star for 13th Street Cat Org. 13th Street Cat Org is a Trap-Neuter-Return program that takes wild cats/kittens, neuters them and tries to socialize them in foster homes until they are adoptable. They also vaccinate and microchip the cats. They have adoption fairs on the weekends at Petsmart and some of the kittens are housed at Andy's Pet shop on weekdays. People can also turn in found kittens to Andy's who will then contact 13th Street. For some people the adoption process may be off putting as it isn't as easy as pick a kitten and take it home that day. They want to make sure the kittens are going to a safe, loving home where they will be taken care of for life. We had to wait about a week to get our kitten as she had just gotten neutered and needed time to rest and heal. Joanne runs the program and is a very sweet lady. She calls to make sure the kitten/cat is doing well after the first few days and loves to get photos and updates. We ran into some medical issues with our kitten the first week we had her (by no fault of them) and had to take her to the vet. We then ran into Joanne at Petsmart shortly after. She was very glad to hear that we took her to the vet right away and that our kitten was doing better. I recently heard from my mom that some kittens were found at her work and they needed to be given homes. I immediately gave them 13th Street Cats info knowing in their hands, those kittens would be safe. read more

If discrimination about life situation is "ethical" I must be reading the wrong definition. In Jan 2022 I was turned down by this organization to adopt a cat because I am a renter. Mind you I was in my last rental for 15 years and my current for 5. Over 15 years ago I adopted a pair of kittens from 13th. A month later both cats got a virus from which one died and one lived. It is heartbreaking to have to put down a kitten. When I was asked to move (so my landlord's daughter could have the house) I rehoused the other cat in a very nice home with a friend due to new rental limitations. I since got an emotional support pet recommendation from my doctor so that's why I can now have a cat no matter where I rent. Nevertheless 13th turned me down to adopt! Never been judged and treated like that by another woman. It hurt. So no, I don't recommended an organization who discriminates. read more

i've recently applied an application on the 9th of august. but no response back. i keep checking on this specific kitten i've been wanting to adopt at this specific petsmart that are their pets hoping no one gets him. i went on their website and seen their "successful adoptions" and people have been adopting cats two days ago, a day ago and i still havent heard from them. i called them but it was a dead end and i just now emailed them about my application. i feel like im not being heard. today of 3 other times i went to this specific petsmart to see this kitten ive asked an associate about how ive applied and still haven't heard from them and they couldn't do much about it only bc its not on them you have to go on the shelters website and handle it from there. its so frustrating and how they maintain their organization is so complicated. it gets me upset how very recently they've adopted cats but can't get back to me??? read more
