I found a dying squirrel on the sidewalk - it was clearly suffering. I called SVACA and they sent Officer Beltran. I left the site, but Officer Beltran was kind enough to call me to let me know that he'd gotten the squirrel - who was severely injured and probably won't make it, but I know SVACA did what they could to ease its suffering. I'm really grateful we have SVACA to help animals in distress. read more

I called these guys to ask about a stray cat that just gave birth, but seemed lethargic. I let them know she was still feeding her babies and if I can bring her in (not knowing how much longer she can make it). They said bc she's a stray, even if she is sick and it is an emergency they would turn her down and basically let her die ... i told them that's not very 'humanitarian' of them considering these places claim to 'love and care for animals' people and clinics like this don't love or care for animals unless they get a profit out of it ... these kinds of places don't care they just want money read more

They manage cat licensing. I work graveyard shift. They are very hard to communicate with. I have tried to communicate with them after hours but I have been unable to reach them. I am a senior citizen and I do not have a license fee. I had my cat vaccinated on time and I believed that I had sent the information. Now I have received a notice I am being fined. I am unable to communicate with them after hours. My wife tried calling during their business hours but was unsuccessful. If I attempt to use their system to send in my information, it requires me to pay the standard fee. In this age, I should be able to send in my cat vaccine information in online while still getting the senior citizen discount. It should be possible to communicate with them. To me there is a conflict of interest when an organization making charity pleas is responsible form bureaucratic fees. read more

As a mom of 5 cats, I got 2 of them at SVACA. I like this shelter so much we recently helped a depressed family member get her own baby boy here. This has been one of my favorite shelters since they have such nice facilities and the room for the little sweeties is so fun and clean. You can visit the room and sit and hangout with them. Previously they did take a family picture for you when you leave but the last time we were not offered one which is a little sad but it's ok. The paper work was simple. You even get a free bag of food they normally eat so you won't have to figure out what to give them. We also got some free toys! That was so sweet of them. What was even better was the baby was free!?!? He is 7 months old so he's a big bone boy looking a little bit more massive then his roommate. He was too shy and hid so I think they worried he wouldn't get adopted. But I advice the family member to bring him home because of how calm he was and such a chill cat is a good first pet. I appreciate they set some cats to be free to encourage harder to adopt cats to receive a home. All 3 cats we met from here have been absolutely perfection. We really lucked out here. I would recommend this shelter to anyone who want to bring some joy into their world. They also have dogs and smol animals too. read more

- Super friendly staff - Simple process - Staff that cares I adopted 2 kittens from this place a year apart and the process for both adoptions has been simple, smooth, and informative. The staff here are super nice, educated, and passionate! They make adopting animals easy, knowledgeable, and fun! They let you meet the animals first before adoption and provide you with any information you need for being a new time per parent. They also send you off with some goodies which is a huge plus. They are also very organize with the paper work. I do not think I will adopt animals anywhere else after the experience I have had here. I recently had to drop off some dogs at the shelter, and I can't thank the staff and Officer Castro enough for their support during this difficult time. Officer Castro was compassionate and understanding, making the process much easier for me. He took the time to explain everything and reassured me that the dogs would be well taken care of. I was very new to helping stray dogs out and he throughly explained the process for me. He was very communicative with me and my aunt which helped us feel like we brought the lost dogs to the right place! I truly appreciate his work and effort! I have never met such a kind and compassionate office before so I am grateful the dogs are safe and sound! The shelter staff were also incredibly kind and helpful. I felt relieved knowing the dogs would be in good hands. I highly recommend this shelter for anyone in need of assistance with their pets. These miserable people put their heartless and cold bureaucracy over animals in desperate need. TLDR: Silicon Valley Animal Control, today you were absolutely useless, cold, and petty. You were more concerned with geographic technicalities that you were willing to let this 2 week old sick kitten suffer, and die. Thank goodness for my colleague's mom who did what you refused to do. Background: At 6 AM this morning I drove into work, exited my car to the desperate cries of a 2 week old kitten. He was so small, that I didn't see him in my rearview camera as I was backing into my parking space, and had he been sitting 6 inches to the left, he would've been tragically crushed by my back tires. This baby was cold, shivering, scared, and suffering from an infection in both eyes. Not only that, he was sitting in the middle of a busy parking lot. After looking around for a good hour for other cats that might claim him, I concluded that he had been abandoned, and his chances of survival would be slim. I searched animal shelters nearby, and found the Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority opened at 8 AM. I thought, "Great, I can just start work later, and drop this little guy off". Well, it wasn't that simple. The review: I sat in my car for over an hour waiting for this place to open, and walked up to the door 10 minutes before their opening time of 8 AM. The girl sitting at the front desk did everything she could to ignore me. Okay fine, I'll wait another few minutes for them to open the door. At 7:58 AM I knocked when I saw another girl arrive at the front desk (I think her name tag said Cara). She signaled for me to wait, then went back to scrolling on her phone. **I had an abandoned 2 week old kitten, who was cold, hungry, and sick, and these people were pressed on being petty.** I had taken hours out of my own workday to wait for this place to open, but apparently opening a few minutes early was too much of a lift for these people. Finally, at exactly 8:01 AM, Cara opened the door. On this chilly morning, I would've found more warmth standing out on the curb ... My ONLY concern was getting this kitten help, and all Cara cared about was where I had found it, because apparently, this facility will only service animals within in Santa Clara. I work at the Google offices, which is 4 miles away and not 12 minutes from here, and all she was good for was throwing policy at me. They said that since TECHNICALLY my office sits within San Jose, this kitten was an animal outside of their jurisdiction. She actually advised me to leave this vulnerable kitten back in the parking lot where I found him, and call the San Jose Animal Care and Services (a good half hour away) to pick him up. I offered to pay for them to take care of this kitten until later in the day when I could pick him up and take him to a shelter within the jurisdiction, and they refused. I was absolutely demoralized with these people, that I almost broke down crying right at their front desk. San Jose Animal care wouldn't be open for another 3 hours, and who knows what time they'd be able to come to pick the kitten up. No way would this 2 week old kitten with an eye infection survive that long if I left it where I found it. Completely heartless and cold. I ended up taking him back to my office, and keeping him wrapped in a towel in my car for warmth, resolving to drive him myself to San Jose Animal Care during my lunch break. **THANKFULLY** after sharing all this with a few colleagues, someones relative had the kind heart to come pick him up and provide the care that this shelter would not. read more

We are the proud new owners of the most loving cat we've ever known! It's clear that this place fills their temporary guests with the love all animals deserve. Hong and Beatriz (sorry for the misspelling) treated us wonderfully and were incredibly knowledgeable about each and every animal. We love our cat so much that we're going back for a second one! The cat was so affordable that I donated extra on top of what I paid. It's only been 24 hours, and this cat is already cuddling with my mom as if they've known each other for decades. Fun fact: My mom originally wanted a dog, but when we arrived, the dog she had seen two days earlier had already been adopted! The facility is top-notch, with beautiful pictures and quotes everywhere. You can definitely tell they love animals. Our cat had already been vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped. We weren't from the area, but we had found a stray kitten by our house with an injured leg that was very weak. None of the animal shelters closest to us were open at the time and all our local police departments kept redirecting me back to them anyways, so we just went to the closest city to us with an open animal shelter to try and get it some medical attention. By the time we had arrived there, it was too late, given the kitten's weak and injured condition. The staff came up to us and asked us if we were alright, and upon us explaining the situation, they graciously checked to make sure if the kitten was alive at all before sorrowfully informing us that it was not. Given that we weren't from the county, they normally wouldn't have accepted the body, but they explained that given the circumstances, they would. We are so incredibly grateful that they understood the tough situation and accepted the kitten despite our not being from the area. Thank you for handling it so well and comforting us all the while, it was deeply appreciated. read more

I have an issue with skunks in my yard. After reviewing their website, sounded like a call was in order. Spoke to the agent who said that they do not handle these type of cases. Instead, she gave me two numbers: one for a local wildlife agency and one was to Vector Control. Asked what the difference was. She explained that the agency could give advice and that Vector Control would come out, but would charge for removal. Called wildlife and she said to call SVAC as they remove animals! Called Vector Control. They actually come out and provide recommendations at no cost, but do not remove the animals. Super disappointed in SVAC. While I would have liked for them to take care of the issue, they should know what another agency does before referring you to that agency. read more

After an unfortunate encounter with an uncontrolled canine in a Campbell neighborhood, it is such a refreshing experience to consult with the Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority (SVACA). From the discussions in reception area at the Santa Clara office to the phone consultations with Officer Castro, SVACA officials process cases in a non-judgmental manner clearly sympathizing with residents who may have lower comfort levels with off leashed canines that charge residents in an aggressive manner. In this close encounter, no injuries were reported and the community meetings really helped to prepare for such a situation (i.e., to stand your ground and direct the animal to retreat in commanding voice). While owners have to adhere to local ordinances and maintain control of animals, it is really helpful to speak to officer Castro and the SVACA team to understand canine behavior especially on public sidewalks near garages and all the details that come with such incidents. I feel in a much better position to handle such situations in the future and be in control. I only wish that more residents would join community meetings or at least consult with SVACA before accepting the risks and responsibilities that come with ownership. Threats and imitation to get off public sidewalks in such situations are unneighborly and will trigger unnecessary case work. Take responsibility, mitigate negligent behavior and be aware of the risks. read more

I've ran into Ed Castro(spelling?) while I was out looking for a lost stray/community feral cat. He was out on a call but he made sure to stop and discuss my situation with me. He assured me he monitors this area and will let me know if he hears or gets any calls about a cat if it has the same description as I provided. We also had a good conversation overall. He genuinely cares about animals and their well being. Additionally, every time I've called SVACA (including a time I found a lost dog and dropped him off at their building after hours), every single operator was extremely professional and nice. DON'T EVER LET THIS PLACE SAY THEY WILL ARREST YOU FOR LEAVING AN ANIMAL WITH THEM BECAUSE IT WASN'T FOUND IN THEIR SUPPORTING COUNTY! THEY CAN NOT HOLD YOU AGAINST YOUR WILL OR ARREST YOU FOR SURRENDERING A DOG AND LEAVING IT WITH THEM, IT IS ILLEGAL FOR THEM TO HOLD YOU HOSTAGE. The doors were locked at 4:30PM. My friend had to bang on the door for help but is open until 5PM. They took my friends license, license plate number, keys. They threatened him as if he had committed a crime. They asked why my friend was 'so stupid' for caring for the dog until he found a shelter. I called Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority (SVACA) today because they were open and the San Jose shelter was not. My friend, could not care for this stay dog and the dog needed help because of the pain it was enduring. My friend took the dog to SVACA. The workers held my friend hostage and locked all the doors because the dog was not found in Santa Clara or a City listed on their website (Campbell, Monte Sereno, and Mountain View) They told my friend SVACA could not care for the dog and he will need to leave with the dog. My friend refused to take back the dog because 1. He could not care for it and 2. The dog was in major pain. I spoke to the women holding my friend hostage and she said she'll arrest him if he leaves. I called the Santa Clara PD and as soon as my friend mentioned I had called the police, they let him go. This was NOT ok and illegal. I will be making a complaint with the county and with management tomorrow. Someone will be held accountable. Thankfully, the dog got care and is now going to be microchip scanned and I hope they find it's Owner. No one cared that the dog was in need of help but my friend and I. I'm so disappointed with the service at this center. They truly do not care about the animals well being once they know they are spayed. I found a cat in my parking garage that was terrified and hiding in the corner. We took her in because one of our neighbors moved out and left her. I called the facility to see what the options were and we decided to try to keep her since I didn't want to stress her out more. A month or so later of trying to integrate her into our home, the cat is being more and more aggressive towards my pug without instigation. My pugs back is all scratched up and luckily she hasn't gotten scratched in the eye yet. I called back requesting to shelter her and got accused of changing my "story". The person on the call and the shelter manager basically told me to put the cat back outside where I found her since she was a stray. I don't understand how they can claim to care for animals and just tell me to put an indoor cat outside where they might starve or get hit by a car. They claim its kitten season and they wont be able to rehome her because her personality might change when she is put in the shelter and she may bite or scratch someone. I just want to do what is best for both animals and this shelter refuses to help. If you do go here be prepared to be demeaned by the staff. The only person that really helped us was their inhouse veterinarian who helped confirm she was already spayed. Anyone else I spoke to were completely rude and I would not want anyone to be treated with so much disrespect. Go somewhere else to adopt. The people here dont care about the animals. read more

I love how classical music is played. I've been to other shelters and they keep animals in small cages. I understand that maybe other shelters are at or over capacity, but I think it's better for animals to have more space. I got my kitten Charlie from SVACA. All the low costs spay/neuter clinics I contacted were booked out pretty far or not accepting new patients any time soon. SVACA let me know they were booked but will notify me ASAP when their next month of appointments open up. As soon as they did I got an email from Gina who was very responsive and helpful scheduling this appointment. Every staff member I encountered was extremely helpful and friendly. Was able to receive a $60 voucher for living in SC County which is awesome. This is a great low cost spay and neuter clinic. Can't thank them enough. read more

I absolutely love this place! I recently adopted my first dog from here and the process was seamless. First I went online and saw a couple dogs I wanted to see. I called the shelter and made an appointment. When I got there I the facility was really clean, and it didn't smell like animals at all. I had to fill out a basic questionnaire before I was able to go back and view my potential pets. The agent who helped me name was Stacy and she was so sweet and knowledgeable about all the dogs I was interested in. I eventually ended up falling in love with Darla. Since I was married I couldn't complete the adoption until my husband was present. So I went down on Thursday, and Friday I called to place a hold on Darla by leaving a 75 dollar deposit. The hold makes her unavailable for adoption for 24 hours. On Saturday, me and my husband went to pick up Darla! Stacy wasn't in when we go there so another agent was able to help us out. She went over Darla's medical history with us and asked did we have any questions. The provided us with a chip for Darla, a leash/colar, and a bag of dog food. SVACA... - will not adopt a cat out as an indoor/outdoor animal. - was very insistent that every person living in the house came to see the animal before letting us adopt. - did a follow up call a year later to check on the animal. - has exceptionally clean facilities. - has drop kennels outside if you need to drop off a stray when they are closed. Warnings: - Do not go look at the puppy/dog section if you are not ready to take one home... It was way sadder than the kitten/cat section because they were so vocal. I just peeked in because I was curious, and I regretted it. - They are not a no-kill shelter, if that is what you are looking for. Suggestion for improvement: - Please instruct/train your front desk staff to greet and address people as soon as they walk in. Once I was talking to staff members, every person I spoke to was friendly and helpful, but each of the 3-4 times I've been in, I felt like I was ignored at first. Came here to check out a couple of dogs that they had up for adoption (in December they do a $12 promotion to help get adult dogs into homes!) and was really blown away by this facility. I have always had a fear of going into a dog shelter because I was worried it was going to be horrifying. In my head I picture rows and rows of caged animals... I was totally wrong (at least with this place) - the animals have their own rooms with big glass windows so they can see into the hallways. They have a great outdoor area for the dogs to play around in and an indoor room where the dogs can play as well. I just signed up to be a volunteer in the future - you have to go through a 2 hour training to learn all of the ins and outs of the place, but I'm excited to get more involved in 2014. :) read more

Had a wonderful phone experience with Lisa and her Manager. I got my license renewal and throw it away by mistake. Lisa was very patient and understanding and we both had a good laugh about trashing the notice. She guided me through the website and the steps for an online renewal and gave me alternatives to use in the event the payment form did not accept my vaccine documents. In addition, we had a very pleasant conversation about pet (really family) adoptions and I conveyed my appreciation to her and her manager about the work they do and that Lisa is a reflection on management. Take this review with knowledge that I am completely biased by the fact that my family just adopted the best dog in the world, Django the Wonder-Mutt. The staff here is friendly, helpful, thorough and very kind. They made the whole experience fun. They were very direct about DtWM's various health issues so we made our commitment knowing fully what we were getting in to. The facility itself is very nice (unlike the other doggie Dachau we visited earlier that week) It's clean, cheery, and seemingly comfortable for the animals. Django was rooming with the dog he was brought-in with, and the staff commented that they would be keeping his buddy extra busy for the next few days so he would not have a chance to miss his pal. We just adopted a great Doxie mix over the weekend. Whoever wrote the review saying this place is small is crazy. The kennels are called condos and they're just that, glass walls, beds, toys and no stress from other animals barking all the time. They have a really large meet and greet room with agility toys for meeting your potential pet. We went to look at two dogs we saw on the website but Cathy, one of the awesome workers asked me what I was looking for and recommended Daisy. After meeting the first two we came to see, we met Daisy and Cathy was right. She is just perfect. The adoption process was quick and they even gave me a collar and leash since I did not bring my own. They also offer a $100 rebate if you complete training classes which makes it a great deal. I love my pup, Jack (originally known as Shiloh). I actually don't think the word love captures just how obsessed I am. How did I live without a dog before this?? SVACA is responsible, requests the right information and sticks to their guns. They will not just send any animal home with any family. Upon qualification, they treat you very well and provide any information/advice you could ever ask for. They are very friendly and professional. They treat their animals with love and respect. The process was smooth and quick. They are fair and equal when it comes to a popular pet. My dog Jack is now 6 months old and has always been a perfect sleeper, a great leashed walker and a brilliant little stud muffin. He has zero food aggression, is friendly and lovey to everyone -small and big. He doesn't bark at other dogs and is able to sleep right through construction. I think that the experiences he went through while at SVACA, prior to my adoption, had a great deal to do with why Jack is such a great guy. Can't speak highly enough about the wonderful service this place provides. It is clean, and undeniably depressing, but staff is great and patient and that kind of knocks some of the Saddy face off. I swear, some of cats and kittens don't want to be anywhere else. Was looking for a potential new companion for other, older pooch, and was shocked at the amount of chihuahuas and lap dogs I saw. There is clearly a problem in SCC. But after a few trips and introductions, I fell in love with this dummy. Morty...Siberian/German mix.
