"14 West" is located on PCH. It is not on the view side of S Coast Highway; the beach is located across the street. Given this: the walk from the hotel to the beach is short. (The hotel has some beach accessories available for rent.) It's also an easy walk to PCH (x) Forest Ave, where there is a concentration of bars, restaurants and shopping. If you are on S Coast Highway, arriving by car, look for the Ralph's grocery store. Turn onto Cleo St. You will see the hotel's parking lot entrance, on your left-hand side, before you reach Glenneyre St. There are a number of short-term parking slots near the hotel lobby; but I would avoid using those, for a number of reasons. Parking is $35/day, plus taxes ($39.99 total). Staff at the front desk found my reservation easily, and the check in process was fast. This is a smaller hotel; there might be only one team member at the desk. If there is a surge of activity, there might be a bit of a wait. With reference to the room assigned to me: The carpets were clean; there were no obvious stains or tears. The furniture was clean, without significant bumps or bruises. The TV worked well. The bedsheets were not plush; but they were spotless, with no signs of excessive wear. I have experienced better mattresses in hotels at this price point; but the mattress here was reasonably comfortable. The bathroom is where you might see the most wear and tear; but the bathroom here was very clean. The towels were not plush, but they were clean, hefty and in good condition. There was a shower (no bathtub). The hotel room was well maintained, but its decor was a bit dated. Based on the room's layout, my guess is that the hotel (as we see it today) was designed in the 1970s. But I also suspect the original structure is even older. The room had a window air conditioner. It was a bit loud; but it worked well. It also had a space heater (no central heating). All in all, it was a good stay. Other random notes: It is interesting that they installed key card locks; but they have reverted to using keys (maybe for maintenance reasons). You might hear footsteps from the room above you. If you are in your room during pool hours, you will hear activity. There are table lamps on the nightstands besides the bed. You turn these lights on by tapping the left side of the base. I learned this by accident, while searching for on/off switches. You are paying a premium to stay in Laguna Beach, versus a comparable hotel in a neighboring city, as close as 15 min (car ride) away. However, I was attending a reception, and the venue was a block away from this hotel. I booked my room using a travel aggregator. Room prices can vary wildly, based on dynamic pricing. read more

Room 70 was clean and the hotel is quaint. We paid 295 after taxes and fees. I could not afford the extra 50 to check in before 2pm, and we were fine with that. The air conditioner ran loudly all night and the bed springs screamed my name once or twice. Even with paying $40 for parking I was still ok because it's only one night and it was the cheapest place around. We would return if we were inclined to revisit gorgeous Laguna again. read more

Shower temp handle no longer attached to wall. 3. Numerous cracks in stucco and missing stucco. 4. Water damaged walls. 5. Various stains on floor of unknown etiology. read more

The good: I felt transported to New Orleans with this wrought black iron French-style hotel with a courtyard pool and fun plants. I stayed here recently and enjoyed the location. It's walking distance to the beach and to downtown and a lot of restaurants and shops. I'd stay here again because of the location. I liked that my one bedroom suite had a separate living room with a pullout couch so that my two kids could sleep separately and not wake one another. There were two TVs, a fridge, coffee machine and microwave. There was even a fireplace. There's a Ralph's grocery store across the street so it was really convenient to get snacks. The bad: The listing said the pool was open all year around but it wasn't. You have to pay extra for parking. They forgot to charge me for parking so they called me after I already checked out to charge me. My room was supposed to be ready for an early check-in at 2 but it wasn't ready so I was given a different room. The jacuzzi tub jets didn't work. The interior is quite old. The interesting: The included breakfast was limited to toast, bagels, coffee, tea, danish and packaged oatmeal. The Mexican spot across the street is delicious. read more

Nice ambiance across the street beach hotel. The front desk (Allan) been very helpful and accommodating all throughout our stay. Since we are early we asked if we can leave our stuff and enjoyed the beach before checking in and even after checking out too before heading back home. The room is super spacious and very clean. Easy parking if you have a car with you if not free trolly accessible for guests. They have a cute game room perfect for hangout with friends. Highly recommendable and will definitely come back for a quick getaway. read more

Worst hotel experience ever! Let's start with the nightly parking fee of $35, no thank you. Parked down the street for free. Got in my room and turned on the heater to have it start smoking and set off the smoke detector. Carpet was dirty with stains as well. Glad I was able to move rooms. Second room only had an AC unit. Third room had a heater that struggled to blow out warm air, but I was tired of moving rooms so I settled. This place is run down. Peeling wall paper, poorly cleaned rooms and exterior of building falling apart. On my second night power to half my room stopped working. No TV, mini fridge, heater or alarm clock. I had food in the fridge so that was a problem for me. I call the receptionist and he nonchalantly informed me there were no rooms available and I'd have to wait until the morning to get the power back on. I ended my stay early and checked out immediately. I still had another night's stay, but I couldn't take the blatant disregard any longer. I thought I was getting a great deal on a boutique hotel stay in Laguna Beach, turned out to be a nightmare. Avoid this place at all costs! read more

This hotel is extremely run down and filthy. I was surprised when I arrived in my room to see what the place was like. I stayed here many years ago when it was a Holiday Inn, and we had a great experience. The carpet was filthy, and there was severe water damage to the ceiling above the bathroom sink. Must have been a major leak at some point in the room above. The fridge and heater made a lot of noise. I was not informed of the parking fee because I thought I had booked my room through the hotel, but it was with a third party. I learned this at checkout when the guy at the front desk told me he didn't have a receipt to print for me because it was booked through Expedia (not what my confirmation said), but ok. Then he said everything was taken care of. So I can 4 days later, as I noticed a $39 charge on my credit card. When I called to ask what it was for, I was informed that it was for parking. I explained I was asked for my credit card for incidentals, and nothing about parking. There should have been a receipt for my parking in the system? After being given attitude and awful customer service, I finally got a direct number to the Manager. I have worked in Customer service for 35 years, and I would never talk to a Customer the way the employee did. This is supposed to be an upscale hotel, according to the photos on the website, in Laguna Beach, California. What a disappointment. read more

Disappointing Experience! I booked 2 rooms for one night over Memorial Day weekend back in April through my credit card portal and received confirmation and payment for both. When I called the day of check in to ask about room proximity, I was shocked to find they only had me down for 1 room. Despite showing proof of the 2 rooms booked and full payment, the hotel didn't do anything to help. They didn't offer a solution, express any concern, or even apologize for the inconvenience. This hotel gets a bad rap, some of the reviews on various sites nearly scared me away from booking my solo trip here but I'm so glad I did! Yes, building is old, rooms are dated (although it appeared they're renovating - this caused zero disruption in my stay), but the character of this property just can't be replicated in the newer chain hotels. My room was clean and comfortable and the grounds were well maintained. The location was so convenient to the beach, restaurants and shopping that I didn't spend any time at the pool but really enjoyed the ambiance the beautiful courtyard offered as I was coming and going. My check in experience was excellent, lots of great recommendations for plant-based options for food nearby. I didn't have a vehicle so didn't pay for parking but was convenient for those who took advantage. Will be back!!! Two things to note - courtyard noise was evident (not much to muffle it from the exterior entrance) and no microwave in the room (but one in the lobby). read more

DO NOT STAY HERE!! The photos are NOT what the property looks like. It is so falsely advertised it's a joke. We saw the most beautiful photos online and when we got there, we were greeted with rusty stairs, a dark room that hasn't ever been touched, let alone updated, a toilet that wouldn't flush, a phone that didn't work, and a water damaged bathroom door that would shut. The bed had 6 layers of mattress covers which lead me to think bedbugs were probably a thing. I talked to the front desk and showed them the photos that they used for advertising. He told me those were from 14 EAST which doesn't actually exist. He told me I'd have to make a reservation with them but the price would double. What a joke. Please find somewhere else to stay. Don't waste your time here. Stayed here for a wedding and my rooms temperature defaulted to heat throughout the night, unable to turn on the A/C, or turn off the heat all together. I went down to the Lobby multiple times looking for assistance, where ultimately there was nothing they could do to fix the A/C or even put me in a different room. I was woken up multiple times through the night with the temperature getting as high as 87 degrees. Unfriendly and unprofessional staff all around. Please if you are looking for a get away with your family or friends look elsewhere. I tried to mend this with the front of house staff, they said sorry no reimbursement can be provided, but here's $100 off your next visit.... So charming and cute & reasonably priced. I can't say enough nice things about this hotel. We had to evacuate due to the LA fires and they let us check in hours early with our cat!! Be aware that pet-friendly does not always mean cat-friendly, 2 hotels in the area turned us down because we had a cat, not a dog! This hotel takes cats & also has parking. They let us cancel next day reservation when the evac orders were lifted. Just sooo helpful and accommodating. Wish I could give 10 stars! read more

this is not a boutique hotel, it's like the dirtiest motel in Laguna. Yukk they allow dogs stay here so the rooms are pee and poo smelling they don't clean the carpet so don't walk barefoot. the night I stayed in this motel was a last minute decision. if you choose to stay here pay cash, they don't calculate charges well and youll be angry when you check out, so pay cash. anyway, the room we were in was a dungeon, the comforter and bed sheets were not cleaned but they charge me for cleaning and the comforter has dog poo. one motel I have to ex off my list in Laguna. I should've stayed at casa Loma, that's where I went after I left this motel. read more

Dirty looking hotel with dirty stained carpet. Rusty stairs everywhere. Very unfriendly for anyone that has a mobility challenge. Wallpaper peeling off the walls. False advertising everywhere. Pictures shown are for the adjacent property which was updated. South building is rundown and very uncomfortable. Heating is unavailable in the room, except a questionable heater which doesn't work. Stayed at 14 West North Building last weekend. The rooms are way over priced, paid $425.00 per night. The TV didn't work and the jets in the jacuzzi tub didn't work. The light outside the room never turned off and shined through the door window all night. The BBQ on-site was very weak. Took forever to cook. The entire property needs maintenance; hence the fence surrounding the pool is falling over. For the continental breakfast they served moldy bagels. The employees are very non-interested in helping you, especially the front desk employee's. The place is a rip off! The only positive is the location. Look elsewhere. read more

I booked a room at this property and was excited based on the pictures and description and amenities, especially the fireplaces in the rooms. We arrived for Valentine's weekend and there was a sign saying to check in at an address a few doors down. We thought that was weird but we knew it was a small boutique hotel.... The address turned out to be a Holiday Inn. When we checked in the clerk said that property had been acquired by 14 West and we would be staying there. I asked if it had the same amenities and it did not. She said there had 'been fine print' on their listing. Despite my protests they put us in a room at the Holiday Inn. Long story short, a few hours later they called the room to see if it was occupied. I said yes (wtf?) and didn't think anything about it until another couple walked into our room while we were... let's say, not prepared for them. They had reissued our room to someone else. Our keys then stopped working. As I was at the front desk sorting it out the clerk told me that we had been scheduled at 14 West but been moved to the Holliday Inn for reasons I couldn't understand. They would not refund any of the cost. I booked through Expedia and asked them to try, but the hotel refused to give any refund/culpability to them either (although they gave me $40 since they couldn't resolve it with the hotel). Btw- I checked the listing, and there was not any fine print about being moved from 14 West to an old Holliday Inn (with Holliday Inn signage intact). So if you book here be careful of bait and switch tactics. read more

There's a Ralph's within walking distance & a Whole Foods only a couple miles away if you want to grab some groceries or something to cook as there is a small kitchen area. We tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, but unfortunately these reviews are accurate. So disappointing, calling itself boutique as a way to excuse what is essentially years of deferred maintenance. Upon check in the AC didn't work and there was an electrical issue in the bedroom, causing the tv not to work. Transferred us to the next room where the carpet was not only stained, but not vacuumed at all. Another electrical issue, this time the lamp not working, and cabinets faces falling off the vanity. We were only there one night, otherwise we would have cancelled. We originally planned to go to The Ranch, which we enjoyed in the past, but came here to try something different. It was a tremendous waste of money (disgusting what they're able to charge for the lack of quality in the rooms). Next time we'll go back to The Ranch. read more

The bed is a Murphy bed, the outside balcony had weeds 3ft. high and was absolutely filthy! The parking is underground-good luck going up the stairs with your luggage. We stayed here because it looked cute and was centrally located. We had read the reviews beforehand so we knew, but to kick this off: YOU CHECK IN AT THE HOLIDAY INN NEXT DOOR. It is literally a few steps away. We called beforehand because we were arriving at 11:30 pm to make sure someone would be there. Someone was. Everything was fine. Parking, like at nearly every hotel, cost $17/night, which is an excellent price for the area. I'm not sure why these are the biggest complaints, although the property could probably include a few notes in a confirmation email. Don't come here expecting the Four Seasons. It is a motel, if not barely a hotel. A few of our lightbulbs were burnt out, the shower pressure wasn't the best (I did not even try to wash my hair there), and there was a small hole in one of our towels. There was some chipping on walls and furniture and usual wear and tear. It's basically an AirBnB or a furnished apartment. If you are looking for something nicer, this isn't the spot for you. We are pretty easy travelers as long as the heating/cooling systems work and this place was perfect for us. Also, the WiFi worked great and the bed was extremely comfortable, albeit extremely broken in. All of the rooms are different, layout-wise. We were in room 12, which is the 2nd farthest unit from PCH. It was pretty silent and we kept the fan running in the evenings to sleep in case there was any background noise. We had no issues with noise from other guests Thursday or Friday nights during our stay. My one complaint is that we had our stuff packed and partially loaded the car prior to check out to go walk the beach. There was an employee on a walkie-talkie outside of our unit and we greeted him. When we came back, someone had been in our room, stripped the bed, and started cleaning, etc. We realized that the man with the walkie-talkie is phoning back to the main hotel or maid service to come clean. One problem: WE LITERALLY WERE STILL STAYING THERE. IT WAS BEFORE CHECK OUT. Just because you see us with bags does not mean we are going anywhere, and I think it's quite common to leave your room for breakfast and return before 10 am checkout. ALSO - the key is a physical key, not a keycard, and we had not turned that key in nor checked out at the desk. There is no safe and we had valuables in the room that we did not want to leave in our car or take to the beach. I was EXTREMELY upset that they would just go in and start cleaning our room without even ensuring that we had left the room or checked out. I went down to the desk and barely got a sorry. I started the trip thinking "gosh, Im not sure what all the angry reviews are about, I'm going to make sure to write a stellar one" and ended it furious. We are flying to Laguna from the East Coast monthly through May in preparation from our wedding and had intended on rebooking there, as well as recommending it to wedding guests, but I'm still upset enough at both the situation and the response, and then that no manager or employee reached out to us after that I don't even want to go back. read more

We stayed here for just one night. We were supposed to stay for three. It started off a bit rocky with the lack of feeling welcomed when checking in. Then we could not get the door to unlock because we were not told the "trick." The room we were put in (room #8) was very NOISY! It was right on PCH, which was not revealed when booking. We also ended up being right above a nail salon and could smell the fumes when we walked in. The bathroom also needed a bit of attention. (See photos) We asked to be switched but they could not accommodate us so we booked elsewhere and were much happier. I would not recommend this hotel for the North building. read more
