We make our Mecca to Mugs Up two or three times during the summer. Our hankering for Zip Burgers was powerful today only to be disappointed. They were out of Zip Burgers so we resorted to the Chili Cheese Dogs instead. As expected, they were good, along with the French fries. Dinner for two was about $18.00 including drinks. But business was so slow that they closed about 6:30 tonight after telling a half dozen cars that we saw that they were out of Zip Burgers. Next time it will be better. read more

We got there and waited for a good 25 minutes because they were busy then decided to go up there to take a better look at the menu. Came here as one of the last places I hadn't tried in Columbia right before moving. This place is awesome- retro feel of a drive up and a great place to come in the spring and summer. Prices are great. I tried the cheese zip, chili cheese fries and a cherry float. They were all awesome! They have a small menu but everything is made quickly and they have the flavors down to a tee. I've not been to mugs up in 10 years. It use to be good. Went today ordered hamb. , was room temp along with the Chile cheese dog. The dog was wrapped up so tight with hardly any cheese or chile just grease flavor. The fries were cold and very salty as though they were 2 or 3 hours old. With so much grease and very little cheese cold. Could not eat them. Took home and fed to my chickens. The young girl was a good sport. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

It was a skinny dog in a skinny bun with onions and chili that was thick enough and had great flavor. The cheese zip was about the same beef patty size as a single at McDonald's but the bun fit perfectly and the condiments were in perfect per portion. For a meal I would order two. The root beer was even flat. They also got my order wrong but expected me to write another check to pay the difference instead of eating the two dollars since it was their mistake. My friend took me here while I was visiting him before his graduation. He said I couldn't go wrong with anything I ordered. He suggested the Zipp burger (it's their signature, if you will), but I defiantly ordered the BBQ burger, a root beer and we split some fries. I could taste my arteries clogging, in that delicious way that only home-style American diners can taste, with the sweet and savory BBQ sauce and the perfectly prepared burger. My advise? After going to Mizzou and my sister settling in Columbia, it took me years, but I finally tried this place out at the recommendation of the locals. It obviously stays in business thanks to the locals tradition, otherwise I'm not sure they would last. The food was good but nothing special - normal hot dogs, burgers, fries, etc. Pretty bland but I'm sure that's part of their image. The reason I'm giving one star though - the service. We came for a late lunch on a Saturday - there was probably 4 other cars in the parking lot. Being new, my sister and I didn't know the rules, and it's not like they had them posted. Ordering was fine, but when they brought the food, the waitress was VERY rude when we didn't know how it sat on the window. She very condescendingly talked us through it like we should have learned this in a college course. We ate and enjoyed the meal, but at the end, we couldn't get their attention. At one point, my nephew accidentally honked the horn and they didn't even look. We had someplace to be so I got out to bring the tray up and my sister accidentally knocked a mug down. The waitress finally came after hearing that and lectured us rudely on how we just needed to honk the horn. Nevermind that they didn't come the one time we did. My sister is a local and would have returned if they didn't ruin the experience for us, I was extremely disappointed and so many people talked it up, but it's not worth it if you don't know their system. They won't explain clearly and they treat you rudely if you're a new customer. Do yourself a favor and find another locally owned restaurant that sees the value in new customers. read more

I found this little gem by happenstance and I'm so glad I did!!! Cute little drive up with AMAZING chili dogs! My fiancé and I each ate the chili dogs and I got some cheese fries as well. It reminded me of Wienerschnitzel from the west coast. The two car hops were such a pleasure, especially Deb! But both were friendly and truly make the place unique.
