I recently had brunch here and it was cool. A nice little vibe. You can relax and chill. It's not that big of a spot and the brunch was setup on the upper floor. So if you have downstairs seating you'll have to go up and down the steps to get your food, but with the bloating that's bound to occur with the Belini and Mimosas you prob won't end up eatting much. The food was fair. I did enjoy the flavor of the chicken but would have preferred it a bit more on the crispy side. The music was mostly throwbacks but not too far back that you don't know the lyrics. Service was good and from the looks of it everyone was smiling and having a good time. I don't even know where to begin about how AMAZING this place is.... Okay so I threw a surprise bday party for my boyfriend here about two weeks ago and it was LITERALLY the most perfect place that I could have used!! Reasons: 1. Nancy, the event coordinator (I think) was so cool, direct, and super responsive. I had so many random questions and she answered each one promptly and throughly. 2. The venue was PERFECT. We had the entire second floor to ourselves with a bartender and a few guys clearing tables etc. It was clean, chic, the lighting was pretty and flexible (light and dark are options), and spacious for our crowd of about 40 ppl. The food (American with a twist) was great and affordable and I loved that we had the option to eat from the Ethiopian menu from the venue downstairs. 3. The gentleman who was managing the night of the party, Franco, was soooo cool and accommodating. He didn't hover but constantly made sure we were good. He made the party so stress free. But to be honest, we didn't need anything because everything was already perfect. 4. Ultimately I paid nothing (zero) because my group met the food and beverage minimum. Everybody was very impressed with everything. 1942 is a GEM on U street! (After our party was over, we were able to walk just a few feet (literally) to be in the action and entertainment of U Street.) I am happy to answer any one's questions about this place because it is truly an amazing and incredible place to have an intimate, contemporary, and classy affair. I cannot speak highly enough about the event space, the restaurant and the employees. I hosted my 35th birthday party upstairs, which is the ideal spot for a party. The decor is very cool and the space is super flexible. We had 40ish people, but it could accommodate at least 75. Nancy was amazing to work with us and accommodated all of our needs. She even set up a fabulous and tasty dinner ahead of the party. Harry was our waiter - and everyone couldn't stop raving about him. Franco was also the man - he made sure everything was smooth sailing the whole night. Hands down, fantastic experience. Highly recommended! read more

I planned a 30th Surprise party at this venue this past weekend. I ordered food and held an open bar with a limit. The portions were extremely small. We ordered salmon skewers but instead, we were served salmon slithers on a toothpick. Instead of boneless chicken wings, we received chicken bites. For the bar tab, we asked the bartender to let us know if we made it to halfway to the tab. The bartenders continuously let us know we were nowhere near it. However, moments later the manager Joseph said we were but failed to provide an itemized receipt. When asked for one, I was yelled at and I haven't received one. The guest at the party was hardly drinking and I am sure we didn't reach the limit. I was taken advantage of and the manager Joseph was very unpleasant and unprofessional. Be sure to get what you paid for if you use this space. I think they are running a funny business. I wouldn't trust them. Space is beautiful but not worth the price or potentially being taken advantage of. read more

I came here with 3 of girlfriends on a Friday night and though the tables were already soldout, we were taken care of by Sinbad who's service went above and beyond. 1942DC has earned every star that it has received. I just hosted my wife's birthday celebration on the second floor this past Saturday. Every aspect of our experience surpassed my expectations. Their ENTIRE team is amazing. The venue is modern and inviting. The food is delicious. One of my guests is a former Event Planner and made it a point to mention that he's never had an experience where everything that he tasted was great. A huge thank you to the staff at 1942DC! My wife had an amazing day. If you have a milestone to celebrate or need a venue for a work event, 1942DC should be at the top of your list. I like this place. They go above and beyond. I ordered a mule and the bartender didn't have Ginger beer. I was going to order another drink but not to worry, they staff went and purchased ginger beer and there was the mule. The hookah is good. Hosted a graduation party here in August in the upstairs space. Overall the party was fine, however there were a few concerns that arose throughout the party. What really stood out was the customer service of the management. Upon learning about my concerns they swiftly addressed them and made it clear that there priority was that my guests have a great experience. They absolutely went above and beyond. Came in on 12/29/19 for my best friends birthday brunch. She spoke with someone on the phone prior to booking her brunch with them and was told that the tickets were about to sell out , on top of being told the event would have a DJ & Afro Caribbean menu. None of those things were there when we arrived to the brunch. No DJ (they played Luther Vandross), The food was a buffet style with eggo waffles & the staff didn't even greet us. Upon our arrival the staff never told us where our table was , that you had to go up to the bar for bottomless mimosas or that the food was ready. The managers were just as bad. They didn't take us serious, they said they would give us $20 each as a refund but we never received any refund. They wouldn't give us a direct contact for the manager whom told us he would give us a refund. There also were a group of women who cane in after us for brunch and also complained/were unhappy with their experience. All I will say is DO NOT DO BRUNCH WITH THIS ESTABLISHMENT. They are rude, unprofessional and still have yet to refund any of us. Wouldn't even give it 1 star read more

I threw a surprise birthday party for my wife in the larger space on the second level. I had around 40 guests but it can fit up to 100. Food, drinks and service were outstanding for a very reasonable minimum and they offer small touches at no extra charge such as a cocktail menu with a customized title and drink names. The room's decor is also tasteful and stylish. Nancy made the planning stress free. She was both accommodating and responsive via text or email. Franco made sure the night went smoothly, even going as far as setting up the room with cupcakes I had ordered, balloons, music as well as helping coordinate the surprise. Mario made great cocktails and the staff were professional and polite, passing finger food (which you pick and were delicious) on trays throughout the night. Came here yesterday to celebrate my sister's going away party. They didn't have chicken tacos nor chicken quesadillas. The spicy French fries were tasty. The music playlist was great but too loud. Also, it was very hot inside. The real reason I'm writing this review is to kind of thank Hanna. Although she forgot to return my debit card when I asked her to close out and ended up having to come back the next evening, she clearly used good judgment in hiding my card. Even the manager couldn't find it when he looked downstairs and upstairs. The manager was nice and even gave me his personal number to check later to see if they had it. However, I am very adamant and knew 100% my card was there. So, I asked him to contact Hanna about my card because she wouldn't be to work until a week later. Apparently, she must've told him where she hid my card because he came out with it. Very much an inconvenience to have to leave work early, miss my transportation, get caught in bad weather, etc., but mistakes happen and I'm just happy I have my card. Thank you Hanna (who is very pretty by the way) for at least having the thought to hide the card. All in all, first and last time I visit . . . And not because of Hanna but because of the no-food options and loud music. read more

We held a graduation party for our high school senior and 100 of her friends at 1942DC. The team of Nancy, Franco and the staff was incredible. So professional, competent, friendly, accommodating and pleasant to work with. They created customized "Mocktails" with a menu designed by our daughter, provided all the delicious bite size desserts she could think of, and helped with the décor of the space so that it was fabulously festive. They were also very fair and transparent about the financial arrangements. The staff who served the drinks and food were terrific. Perhaps most importantly, my daughter and her friends had a fabulous time as a result of the excellent staff and the awesome space. I cannot say enough good things about 1942DC and the staff. I had an amazing experience hosting an event here at 1942DC. The staff really takes pride in taking care of the guests from the moment they walk in. Myself, along with my party enjoyed glasses of wine and cocktails while eating some of the best wings I've had in awhile. The event lasted from 6-8 and I couldn't have imagined a better space to enjoy our Wednesday evening. The interior is intimate and extremely comfortable, and I will definitely be returning to enjoy more of menu and drink selection. This was a refreshing experience in this new and forever evolving U street corridor. I highly recommend checking them out if you're ever in the area (9th and U NW).
