Interestingly enough, this is my second review of 1st & Main. We used to LOVE coming here. We had a really awful experience at our most recent visit. We were blown away that 1 cup of romaine, some parmesan, 3 stale croutons and dressing cost $9. The Caesar salad was small and not at all exciting or tasty. My glass of wine was priced at $7 - the only merlot offered and sells for $9 a bottle in stores. Overpriced sports bar. Stick with bar food and burgers. Won't be back. read more

We looked up 1st and Main up on Yelp, we thought this place would be the perfect place to go. However, when we arrived the place was not busy and the waiters and bartenders stood behind the bar talking to each other. We waited 10 minutes. We never got an acknowledgement we were there, never received a menu nor waters. We got up and left to another place. Terrible slow service who rather talk than serve their customers. read more

Ate dinner here a week ago with my husband and son. We had the beer battered pickles as an appetizer, salad and burgers. Everything was great and the portions generous! The tables weren't too close together so you didn't feel as if you were sitting on top of someone. I like that the building was an old building - it must made for a pretty cool atmosphere. The drink I ordered was great and not weak. Prices are reasonable! My only complaint is that the floor was so dirty! The floor was visibly dirty and sticky. The stickiness was in a few spots but it was visibly dirty all the way around. That wouldn't prevent me from returning but it was gross. read more

More focused on their special rootbeer barbeque sauce than they are on making good food. Overall extremely disappointed in the meal, considering the reviews had been so good. Really good place for a beer and a sandwich. We were there on a Wednesday and had the blackened chicken pita sandwich. It was excellent. They have great salads, burgers and soup too. We were staying at the Days Inn and were able to get delivery to the hotel. Ordered a Spinach Cranberry Pecan Salad with chicken which was delicious! Order was delivered on time. The only issue was it didn't come with any silverware or napkins. Fantastic food, fast friendly service. So far this has been the best place we have eaten in Dubuque. I'd recommend this great little place to anyone. The house made black bean burger was exceptional and the Thai noodles were fantastic. The Munchie Platter came filled with beer battered goodness, meat balls and a delicious cheesy flat bread. The kids both had hamburger kids meals that were big enough for an adult and plenty of fries. And since it was Monday the kids ate for free with our purchase. Excellent service, quality food. I'll return. I'm not one for giving out 5 stars but it's close. On the bartender's suggestion I went with the 1st and main burger. It was a stretch but I have a hard time going against a recomendation. To say peanut butter and jelly doesn't belong on a burger is now crazy to me, it works really well. The service is great, however their breakfast is awful. I ordered French toast that was extremely soggy. The hash browns were crunchy and under cooked. The orange juice tastes like chemicals or rotten sunny d. I've had dinner here several times and never had a bad meal, so maybe it was just a bad day for them. Who knows? read more

I could entertain you with a long, eloquently written review of 1st & Main, but you guys, this place transcends words. It has been added to my "favorite places of all time" list. So if you're trying to decide, just go. You will not be disappointed. My spouse and I were in Dubuque for the weekend, and were so impressed with our dinner, we went back for lunch the next day. Below are the menu items we ordered over the course of our visits, all of which I highly recommend. (The staff, who provided excellent service by the way, didn't even HAVE to ask how we enjoyed our meals, as it was obvious from the lack of crumbs left on our plates). Appetizers: Nachos with chicken, teriyaki wings, pita & hummus. Meals: Black bean burger w/ sweet potato fries; 1st & Main burger w/ regular fries. Drinks: Mojito, beer. You guys. I keep trying, but there just aren't words. Everything was made fresh. The nacho chips and pita were homemade and heavily, the toppings were divine, the hummus was the real deal. The black bean burger was a literally a hand-crafted patty of black beans and other magical goodness, not frozen, not processed, not a factory-pressed puck. Even the buns were fluffy and sexy. The sweet potato fries were sprinkled in brown sugar. Uguuuugh. So. Good. There was an especially nice looking bloody mary bar on Sunday (until 1, I think), which was quite popular, which I will most definitely take advantage of next time. I've been to this place a couple of times now, and I had good experiences. The food was excellent, the prices were reasonable and they had a pretty good beer selection. The atmosphere is casual but not divey. This is a good place to hang out at the end of the day or to grab lunch. Happy hour is from 4 to 6, Monday through Thursday, and most nights they have some kind of drink special between 4 and 8. read more

I had one of the best burgers I've ever had (just a pepper jack and bacon burger) and the parmeasan crisp appetizer was delicious. Great atmosphere. Lots of TV's everywhere and really nice bartenders. It's new, about 2 months old and looks great! They have the bottoms up tapper which is super neat and you should come check it out! Had some wings and some bacon Mac & cheese eggrolls which were super tasty! read more

Excellent up-scale bar perfect for dinner or a night on the town. Had a female waitress/bartender forget about us one one occasion (didn't refill drinks, forgot sauce and silverware after asking twice) but overall waitstaff is friendly and helpful. Food is overall good. read more

First, the service was wonderful. But the food was just on the good side of average; definitely nothing outstanding. I wouldn't put it in the 4.5 star category that it currently has. The fried pickles were too salty and a little over battered. The jalapeño popper egg rolls were the highlight, but could have been spicier and I wish they had more jalapeño bits in them (they were mostly cream cheese). I got the veggie burger, which for $11 in Dubuque should have been more substantial. It was pretty small and after a long day of hiking didn't fill me up much. My girlfriend got the fish tacos and thought they were bland. Garlic mashed potatoes were nice. Not a bad meal by any means, but given that the two of us spent $44 (after tax/tip but with no drinks), I would have expected more. read more

This place was definitely a surprise. We came on Monday night about 7:30 only about 3 other tables were occupied and one waiter/bartender on staff. We were greated instantly and approached for drinks. We were lucky Monday is free kids meals which was nice being the menu was a little expensive for a sports bar. We ordered the sampler appetizer but was not impressed. We ordered bloody marys and whiskey & soda which both were made very well. I ordered the burbon salmon with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus which was one of the best salmons I've ever had. My picky kids had the personal pepperoni pizza which they both enjoyed. My husband ordered the sirloin with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus which he said tasted great. We weren't happy with the fact we had to send his steak back for being over cooked and by the time he got his meal we were completely finished. Our salads were brought the same time as our meals which meant if you wanted to eat your salad your meal would be cold. Overall the flavor of the food was worth it and if we return to Dubuque we will visit again. read more

Second time there trying the wings as I'm a wrong fanatic. Disappointed again. Bummer! Wings were dry like they fry them once and then store them until needed. But even the sauces were honestly really bland. Mango Habenro should leave your lips tingly but had half the heat of Tabasco. Maple Chipotle lacked heat and smokiness. Tried the Freak sauce before and it had some heat finally but nothing at all to match its name. Great atmosphere and service, just wish they'd get their wings on par. read more

Found this place on yelp, and glad we did. Such a cool place and quite a history behind the building. Our server was nice and the food was very good. Their fries are prepared different than you will see most places but man are they good. My wife had pulled pork and I had a western burger. We will be back when we are in Dubuque again. read more

We walked in and the rude bartender didn't even say hello just stared at us. When my husband asked if we just find our own spot she just gave a a rude "yep." So when we found a spot with a reserved sign we didn't think anything of it and just sat. She then peered around the corner and gave a dirty look and then sent over, what I assume, was a manager (old guy). He goes "are you part of the 14?" We responded "no, I'm so sorry the bartender told us to just sit anywhere." He goes "well yea except where there's a reserved sign." My husband then said "ok, sorry is there anything open anywhere else." He literally just shook his head no and goes "nope." My husband just responded, "ok, well you're very rude so we'll just leave, thank you". Then the man tried to say "well I'm sorry, the only spots...". Nah! Too late my friend. Disgusting customer service. You'd think restaurants would be a BIT more welcoming and friendly after I'm sure they went through some hard times and people are finally out and coming to eat. read more

Place was ok. Showed up at 11:45am on a Sunday and was surprised I couldn't order from the breakfast menu(even after the waitress asked the chef). I'm from NYC, brunch is anywhere from 10am-2pm in NYC on the weekends. I was upset that they couldn't accommodate my breakfast order 15 minutes before 12pm(when their menu changes to lunch). I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak. The bread was soggy and the meat was tasteless(in dire need of more seasoning). Overall, very underwhelming in comparison to the breakfast skillet I ordered the first time I came here(which is what I was trying to order again, too bad the chef wasn't willing to make it 15 minutes before the end of breakfast). It gets 3 stars because it's a really good "looking" pub, but after going here three times(each time I visited Dubuque), I wasn't impressed enough by their food selection(a lot of places in Dubuque offer the same). I really enjoy the food at 1st & main! Their wings are by far the best in town!!! If you're feeling adventurous you can even try the 1st & main burger!!! It is actually a very enjoyable burger! Their list of Moscow mules are pretty good to!!! Although a few of those go quite a long way!!! But take not as the service isn't above and beyond... Dined here with my husband and middle school age children. We all enjoyed delicious food. My husband and oldest devoured their bbq and Mac & cheese sandwich. My youngest had the bacon cheeseburger with garlic Parmesan fries. He gave it rave reviews reviews. I enjoyed a Greek salad and baked chicken. Chicken was juicy and delicious.
