Heading out of town after a weekend of shopping, drinks, and good times, we stopped by Birdie Bistro for a hardy breakfast ahead of the ride. There was a 20 minute wait, which was expected at 9:30 am on a Sunday morning. Once seated, we were promptly given water and coffee, which we appreciated as we decided on our meals. As tempting as it is to try something different, I felt drawn to the same type of breakfast I had the day prior (see my review on Convivium); eggs over easy, sausage and bacon, with roasted potatoes. I also decided to order a side order of pancakes - after all, a growing boy needs his calories. As you can see by the photo, it came out perfect... and delivered 15 minutes after we ordered (is that a long time? It can always be faster, but I was ok with it). All of us enjoyed what we ordered and the coffee service was constant. I especially loved the sausage patties!!! Yummy! So I would definitely recommend Birdie Bistro when you're in Dubuque. Is it the best ever (5-star), no - I won't bore you with my reason why (to each their own). But Birdie should be proud.. This is a fun little, no frills diner. It's farly bare bones inside. Their food was similarly no-frills, but tasty with good portions. The menu is also extensive, so you're very likely to find something you want here. I will say that their coffee, both regular and decaf, was not very good at all. I would suggest changing brands. On the plus side, the server and other staff were all very nice and helpful, both in the service but also in making suggestions for what is good. And they were right! We walked in and, instead of being seated with the other guests where there were still empty tables available, our group was placed in the back room right next to the kitchen door. It honestly felt uncomfortable and separate from the rest of the dining area. Then the food came out, and to be generous, it was below average. I just loved this place. No many things open on a Sunday so finding this gem was good luck. There is a small lot or street parking. The staff is very friendly and happy. I love that they gave me the option to add strawberries, whip cream, and or chocolate chips. The special sauce though is their honey orange butter. This is a fabulous gem that is a great addition to our city! Once we discovered this place, we try to go once a week. We stick to the senior menu specials in the morning Wednesday to Friday, before 10 am. They have quite a few delicious options that also include coffee. Our particular favorite is their fluffy pancakes with a special butter, a hint of orange zest in it. Their bacon.... Wow! Salad for your hair! I ordered a sandwich which came with a wonderful looking salad. The first few bites were delicious, until! I noticed a hair in the salad, which turned out to be a big knotted mass of hair of the likes I've never seen in food before( a strand of hair is one thing, but a big knot). Yes, it was disgusting! After they took away the hairball salad, a owner came to the table and asked if I wanted to move to different part of the restaurant, which seemed odd. Great food in a bright, clean space. It was surprisingly not busy when we arrived on a Saturday, maybe because it was pretty late - around 1 pm. Menu has a good selection, but is not overwhelming, and is reasonably priced. Everything we tried was tasty - husband really liked his Mississippi pot roast Benedict (special of the day), kids inhaled their kids French toast, and I liked my country stack. The sausage gravy was delicious! The side order of bacon came with 4 strips, with a nice smoky flavor. An order of pancakes came as a stack of two - just the right size - and with orange butter - yum. The pancakes themselves were springy and slightly crispy on the outside - a unique take compared to most brunch places I've been to, and it absolutely works. And the coffee is great too. We ordered a large to go order. I walked in and it's a cute little place, the waitress asked if I had a to go order - I said yes. She said "ok you're going to need to wait". Tried this little gem in downtown Dubuque Iowa for breakfast this morning. The bistro is clean, spacious and welcoming. The menu has a good breakfast and lunch selection. I had the breakfast burrito with bacon and the country potatoes. The burrito was delivered super hot, and it was scrumptious. The country potatoes were very good as well. Janell was on point, welcoming, hospitable, and very attentive. She frequented all tables for refills on coffee and water. Very clean, great staff! The eggs benedict on the menu says grilled ham, it was actually black forest deli meat, the "omelet" should be called a skillet folded in half with cheese in the middle.
