Dr. Shahin and his staff are truly amazing. I am terrified of the dentist and I have been trying to look for an office that can ease my anxiety. This is a modern boutique practice with all the bells and whistles need for a big baby like me. From the moment I walked in I was warmly greeted by the receptionist I believe her name was Amanda. She's such a delight she was able to help me verify my insurance with the little to almost none information I had and give me a rough estimate of my treatment. When I met with Dr. Shahin he was able to address every issue I had and speak to me in human term not in Dental terminology most dentist use which if you are like myself you have no idea what there saying half of the time. He takes the time to examine you and create a treatment plan giving you the best options possible without being pushy. He was able to determine the cause of my pain was a poorly done root canal and was able to make extra time in the schedule to re-do it same day. Along with his assistant They were able to explain step by step what was happeining and kept reassuring me along with his assistant everything was alright. This was the most painful dental cleaning I've ever gotten. Let's start with that. I'll also add that I've never had my wisdom teeth removed, because they've never grown fully out of the gum. There's one that pokes out just slightly, but I've had multiple dentists in the past tell me there's no need to touch it because it's not bothering anyone. Dr. Shahin repeatedly asked me if I wanted to have my barely-visible wisdom tooth removed. Nope nope nope. Have never had any other dentist try to push wisdom tooth removal on me since there's actually not anything there to remove... Finally, the office claimed repeatedly that they didn't receive my X-rays from my old dentist back in Michigan, so I paid something like $200 for another set of X-rays. Checked back with my Mich dentist after the appointment, and they insisted that they sent them to 1st Impression. Hmm... But yeah, a simple cleaning hurt. A lot. That's reason enough for me to not go here again. read more

First Impression Dental seemed pretty much like any other dentist office when I visited recently for a teeth cleaning. Upon arrival, I filled out the first time patient survey, which asks about general patient health/dentist history. When Dr. Shahin was ready to see me, he clearly didn't read my answers as he kept asking me the same questions that were on the survey. After the questions, he told me he needed to do an x-ray. I felt like Dr. Shahin was trying to soak up my insurance money. I've never had a dentist in the past request to do an x-ray just for a teeth cleaning. Secondly, he was pretty aggressive in trying to sell me in removing my wisdom teeth. I have had 2 previous dentists tell me that my wisdom teeth will grow in fine and I don't need them taken out. After finding out I am getting married next month, he posed the question, "Should we schedule your wisdom teeth removal before or after your wedding?" Seriously? I know friends who required weeks to recover after getting their wisdom teeth removed. You want me to try to schedule that in before my wedding?! Lastly, I felt like he was inexperienced in teeth cleaning. While using the electric spinning tool that polishes/applies toothpaste to my teeth, he didn't pull my lip up and let the electric spinning tool hurt my lip. There's a small/reasonable amount of pain that usually comes with a teeth cleaning - I mean they have to scrape off plaque off your teeth, I know to expect some discomfort. But he let my lip get caught against the electric spinning polisher tool. I was really happy to escape his office when the teeth cleaning was over. I will never, ever go back. read more

I had gone to see Dr. Shahin a few months ago because I had broken a front tooth that had a crown on it. I was unable to see my regular dentist because it was a late Saturday afternoon and they were closed, but Dr. Shahin saw me with no hesitation and did an amazing job. I was concerned because it was a front tooth, and I was afraid that I would have needed an implant due to how badly the tooth had broken. Dr. Shahin was very honest, and explained what he was going to do in order to fix my tooth prior to him actually working on the tooth. He was patient as I asked all of my questions and as I raised my concerns. He did a great job in saving my tooth! read more

Beware Folks, this service is rip off. He tried to fit me with a children's size dentures that clearly didn't fit my mouth. It was pure common sense it wasn't a fitting from the impressions (moulding) he previously made. When I return for the corrected impressions he refused to do the fitting until he received the balance. His work is crappy and his business is shady. I will never recommend this service, he's a crook. Go elsewhere this dentist is no good. Consider yourself warned. Only gave one star so this can be posted. read more

TL:DR: DON'T LET HIM REMOVE YOUR WISDOM TEETH. SEE AN ORAL SURGEON. He coerced me into getting my teeth removed, and then failed to recognize that I had dry socket in 3 teeth. NO GENERAL ANESTHESIA. Dr. Shahin is dying to take out your wisdom teeth for no reason, other than getting money. It is a scam. Dr.Shahin IS A DENTIST. He is not AN ORAL SURGEON. There is NO general anesthesia, probably because he's not authorized to administer it. At NO point did Dr. Shahin explain to me what my options were. After TWO YEARS of him nagging me to get my wisdom teeth removed, I agreed. I had been told by other dentists that my teeth were fine, and I had plenty of space, but after him convincing me they might get infected later in life, I agreed. GET A SECOND OPINION. The procedure was extremely painful, to the point where I was crying and doing my best to not squirm in my chair. I literally had to listen to feel them grind down my teeth, and get my own freaking tooth dust in my eye, pulling and wiggling and grinding, and so so so traumatizing. I then was in excruciating pain, which he said was normal. I was prescribed pain medication for 3 days, and followed every step of the little sheet they give you post surgery, to a T. After 3 days, I was still in excruciating pain in my jaw, I couldn't sleep at night because I had finished my prescribed dosage of medication, and immediately first thing in the morning went to his office to have him check that everything was okay. HE LOOKED IN MY MOUTH AND TOLD ME EVERYTHING WAS FINE. I had to strong arm him in to giving me 1 more days worth of painkillers, and he made me feel like I was a desperate drug addict, like there was nothing wrong with me. He said he refused to give me more and that was all he could do "you should try more Tylenol" (I was already taking 400mg every 4 hours, as I told him). I sat with this excruciating pain for two more days until I lost it. I ended up getting checked out by a friend dentist, then seeing an old, wonderful Park Slope dentist of mine (that had scans of my teeth and immediately knew the surgery was unnecessary), and they were both horrified that a DENTIST would even extract teeth. He said because he doesn't extract teeth he couldn't say what was wrong with my extraction sites, but because I was in excruciating pain and hadn't slept in days, he gave me some pain medication and sent me to an Oral Surgeon. The Oral Surgeon did a major facepalm when he saw my extraction sites. He immediately knew what had happened, and that I had been majorly scammed. I had dry socket in 3 teeth and I had been suffering through it for a week and a half at this point. He gave me general anesthesia, fixed up my dry socket, and sent me off with pain medication. It was the most intense excruciating, relentless wake-you-up-through-the-night pain, and WHEN I SPECIFICALLY ASKED DR. SHAHIN IF ANYTHING WAS WRONG, HE SAID I WAS FINE! It was all for money, and he is not well trained in this procedure. I think he ended up getting $3,500 from my insurance? Why, Dr. Shahin: a) Did you insist I needed my wisdom teeth removed when two other dentists and an oral surgeon said that it was completely unnecessary? b) Did you not explain to me my options? That I could see an oral surgeon (a professional at this surgery) and have general anesthesia, and lower my chances of getting an infection and dry socket? c) Did you not RECOGNIZE when I came in complaining of extreme pain, and after examining my mouth, that something was wrong? If you're incapable of recognizing the signs of dry socket, you most likely shouldn't be removing teeth. read more

Dr. Pooria Shahin is a great dentist. He is the fourth dentist I have visited in NYC since moving here 5 years ago. I am generally very particular about any medical treatment (hence my shopping around for a good dentist) and he has given me a cleaning, root canal, and THREE crowns!!! All of which I am hugely satisfied with! If you are looking for a dentist who is personable, has great bedside manner and takes time to make sure the job is done right, then Dr. Pooria Shahin is your man! I've been to First Impression twice so far--once for a cleaning and x-rays, and again today to get a couple of cavities taken care of. Today was rough; I always have issues with anesthesia, but Dr. Shahin administered more when necessary and was very kind and understanding of my worries and slight (okay, more than slight) fear of the drill. While today was a rough visit, Dr. Shahin did a good job trying to keep me calm and completed my fillings well. I have to have an implant done in the near future, and I will likely return here for that, as well. All in all, a quality dentist in a very convenient location. read more

Some of the most unprofessional staff I've ever experienced. The dentist himself is very awkward with a weird bedside manner and didn't have answers to a lot of my questions. The teeth cleaning and fillings were fine, but not good enough to deal with him or the staff. I have emailed saved from both of them that are just so inappropriate. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. We arrived a couple minutes early for the pediatric dentist and were taken in right after completing the new patient paper work. The office is small but maybe that's why they were so punctual, there's really not much room for them to allow over crowding. Dr. Shahin took his time with my daughter and explained everything he was doing so she would be comfortable. Her exam wasn't super detailed but for what he did I feel confident that she will be okay in the future. The space was very neat and clean and smelled nice due to the scented candle they were burning. I'm big on aromas so this was a plus for me. read more

Great neighborhood dentist. What's special about Dr. Shahin's practice is he offers pay-as-you-go insurance with no committment, perfect for students and people on the move a lot. The receptionist does a great job with reminder text/call regarding upcoming appointments, and service is always quick. Great Dentistry!!! I had a toothache and needed a dentist asap!.I generally research the MD's and Dentist that I use but due to the time constraint and pain factor, I didn't have time. I googled and the nearest dentists came up. I choose first impression dental because they were very accommodating via phone. Dentist Shrenik Shah & his assistant Queen were very nice and professional with great energy! He was on point my pain was relieved and I'm going to make him my regular Dentist. Let me add, he's a cutie!!! :-). All the dentist that I've had as an adult were all attractive: that's a bonus..lol. Horrible 1st impression at 1st impression. Completely wasted my time. It was my daughters first dentist appt and she was very excited. I called the day before to confirm my appt and ask if I could complete my forms in advance. I started the conversation with I'm calling to confirm my children's appts for this Saturday. When I arrived the next day 15 minutes before my scheduled appts (my daughter was scheduled for 12:30 and my son at 1pm) the receptionist said she didn't see me on the schedule. I was very confused because I knew I called the day before to confirm. She then informed me that the pediatric dentist was only in on Sunday's and the receptionist may have misspoke. Sunday's are impossible for me so I would have never scheduled a Sunday. I was furious. The amount of planning schedule wise for my family to make this happen and she misspoke is what I'm told! She attempted to reschedule me but if they can't get dates correct I refuse to trust them inside my children's mouth. read more

I went here once maybe 3 or 4 years ago. The cleaning seemed fine as far as that goes. But the dentist was an aggressive up seller. He pushed wisdom tooth removal, despite being unable to clearly identity anything wrong with my wisdom teeth. He also pitched orthodonture for no apparent reason. I said I'd think about it, but on the way out the receptionist asked about scheduling wisdom tooth removal even though I had never indicated I wanted to go forward with the procedure. I said no but asked for a written proposal - this surgery would have cost me thousands of dollars. After reading the story of a reviewer who went through with it I'm extremely grateful that I did not. Dentists I've seen since have told me my wisdom teeth are fine and there's no reason to remove them if they're not causing me problems. Why bring up this ancient history? I never expressed interest or intention to come back here for anything else, but they have continued to email and call me for years asking me to schedule appointments. I have dozens upon dozens of emails from them. Decided to come back and write a review after they called me again today. I luckily avoided a real nightmare here, but there are certain medical practices that are more interested in running up bills than doing what's best for the patient and this feels like one of them. read more
