Given the length of our stay we upgraded to the King Junior Suite and found it to be a delightful room. The INN being central to the City Market and offers quick access to shops, restaurants and historic churches. We were able to use it as a base for walking to dinner each night 5 to minutes to the cities top restaurants, and exploring the city center. When our car was needed IAAM museum or plantation visit etc it was an easy ingress and egress location. Breakfast can be brought to your room or an expanded version is available in the lobby or a cute patio adjacent. We alternated to keep things fresh. Room was very clean and surprisingly very quiet for a central city. location. Staff pleasant engaging and helpful when needed. Turn down service at night. Every single person I interacted with was friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. You can tell the staff genuinely cares about making guests feel at home. My room was spotless, and one of my favorite things about the hotel was all of the artwork. There are unique pieces displayed throughout the property, and I thought it was really cool that you can actually purchase them if something catches your eye. My room happened to be French Bulldog themed, which I loved because it immediately reminded me of my best friend, who's obsessed with French Bulldogs. Another thoughtful touch was that every morning they left a small bag of pastries and fruit outside my door. It was such a nice surprise to wake up to each day. I'm also someone who always keeps the "Do Not Disturb" sign on because I usually don't want housekeeping coming into my room. Instead of assuming, they texted me each day to confirm that I didn't need anything or want my room serviced. I really appreciated that they checked in without being intrusive. The location is excellent, the rates were very reasonable for what you get, and the overall experience exceeded my expectations. I booked a room at Bijou Inn several months in advance through a third-party site. Traveling with…read moreour one-year-old, we entered two guests since our baby sleeps with us and doesn't require an extra bed. The 3rd party listing did not make it clear that this property is strictly adults-only. We arrived very late at night, picked up our keys from the mailbox, and went straight to our room. The next morning at breakfast, we were approached by a woman (presumably the owner) who didn't greet us or ask how our stay was, but instead interrogated us about whether we were even guests. When we confirmed we were staying in the Magnolia Room, her tone immediately became sharp as she informed us--quite sternly--that children are not allowed and that our stay violated fire codes. She implied that we had deliberately misrepresented our booking, which was both surprising and upsetting given our honest misunderstanding. After rechecking our reservation, I saw no mention of an adults-only policy anywhere on the third-party site. The only reference appeared deep in a follow-up email attachment from the inn itself--something easy to miss. While the room itself was clean and nicely decorated, the bed slanted and was uncomfortably soft. More importantly, the unwelcoming and confrontational tone from the owner completely overshadowed what could have been a pleasant stay. This property may suit adults traveling without children, but families--or really anyone expecting warm hospitality--should be aware of how confrontational the owner can be.

I chose the hotel, because I wanted to stay somewhere with historic charm (I wanted to feel I was in Charleston)! It was an all right stay. T he building (a historic house) was beautiful - especially the porch, where you can sit and enjoy your coffee in the morning. Our room was nice (it had the wallpaper and wood features I really wanted), especially the bathroom. But the room had seen better days (peeling wallpaper), wasn't the most functional (no outlets near the bed for charging phones), and had a strange basement room (down the stairs was a basement room with a TV, bar, and couch - it was a little creepy, but more than that, I just didn't think it was safe to have those steps so close to the bathroom door - someone who'd had a few too many drinks might just fall right down those steps. The location was okay/pretty good - not really in the heart of things, it was about a 15 minute walk to King Street. This worked for us on Saturday, because it was a lovely day and we had a chance to see a bit of the city (the 15 minutes is a great walk past restaurants and shops), but the weather on Sunday made the distance not so great. And FYI - the walk to the Battery would probably be an hour, but you can obviously Lyft/Uber or pedicab. The location was great if you want a little separation from the more touristy parts of downtown or a quieter neighborhood, but we did Uber more than we normally would on a weekend trip. My biggest gripe is that the hotel is a no-staff or self-service hotel (there's no one to check you in and you are sent the information you need to get into your room ahead of time by text). I've stayed in no-staff/self-service hotels on two other occasions. Sometimes it works out fine, but it really turns a hotel into an airbnb. You can't leave luggage with the front desk if you're checking out hours before your flight nor are there the amenities you might expect at a hotel with front desk staff. I didn't realize from the description on hotels.com that The Ashley was a no-staff/self-service hotel, and I probably wouldn't have booked it if I had known (because we had a 6pm flight and ended up having to store our bags in our friends' hotel). The staff (not on site but available by text) were responsive and helpful, but I think I just prefer a standard hotel. Overall, our stay was fine, but I probably wouldn't stay again.

As with any older house the bathrooms were very small and hard to maneuver. The carriage house had a musty smell which was not great. We absolutely loved the area and were aware that we were a little far from a lot of the touristy things but we were fine with that. We were walking distance from King Street which was nice. The fire pit and the porches are worth the stay - absolutely breathtaking. We spent a lot of time outside which was great. The snacks and drinks were very nice. The breakfast was good but it is a bagel sandwich which is a little too heavy for me. I would stay hear again.

This bed and breakfast is amazing and will long be a place for us to "run away" to hide among the intowners. You feel part of the city being so deep in the French quarter and surrounded by lovely art galleries along side upscale dining and venues. We walked all weekend and enjoyed so much of this beautiful city we call home. I completely recommended this 3 room B and B, from the personal touches to the amazing local breakfast pastries and french pressed coffee to the beautiful folage of the lovely veranda and courtyard just outside our room. Our sweet little study could listen to the beautiful fountain all night and even with the chill in the air we slept so soundly and toasty. You can expect complete autonomy during your stay, although the inn keeper will swoop in during the daytime to clean up and refresh the breakfast supplies. The house itself is on Tradd Street, in the middle of the old old neighborhood that you were going to be walking around anyway. I felt badly for the folks staying up Market or Broad: the hubbub is nice but these sleepy streets of ancient houses are Charleston's soul. Breakfast is an ample pre-fabricated affair, laid out the night before in the apartment's kitchen. There were bagels, breads, and English muffins wrapped in plastic and ready for toasting, along with milk, orange juice, cereal, coffee, tea, etc. It was simple, but all the essentials are there and would continue to be there no matter how late we slept in. Some people may expect a bed and breakfast to provide a full spread served hot with the inn keeper bustling attentively, but I think that the convenience and privacy were a welcome trade. The room itself was all we could have wanted. We stayed in the "back garden" room, which is smaller than the carriage house and larger than the "front garden" room. I uploaded a few representative pictures: the general theme is old-fashioned (in the good way: colonial, not 70s) and comfortable. If you are the type of person who is excited to stay in an old Charleston neighborhood I can guarantee that you will like this room.

If you choose a B&B for attentive hospitality and to feel like you're part of a home, you may be disappointed. If you're just looking for a well-appointed, nicely-located crash pad with the amenities of home, you'll be satisfied. We booked the "carriage house," ($170) which is actually a maid's quarters behind the main home. It's completely separated from the main home, and functions as a self-contained apartment. The two-story building includes a small kitchen and living room downstairs and a bedroom with a bathroom upstairs. An aside: the bed is incredibly comfortable for a guest room. We saw the inn keeper at check-in, when she gave us a brief overview of the apartment and the city. She seemed rushed, but she did give us a thorough overview of local attractions and several restaurant suggestions that proved useful. It's clear she knows the city. But after the initial introduction, we saw her only fleetingly as she was getting into her car. Breakfasts are served here differently than they are in most other B&Bs. The innkeeper outfits the kitchen with breakfast essentials (cereal, milk, coffee, English muffins, fruit, and juice) as well as some home baked goods (brownies and pumpkin bread when we were there.) This system has some advantages: we took breakfast when we wanted it, and we were free to snack on the brownies during the evening. But for all its convenience and efficiency, the pre-prepared method felt a little cold. I missed the warm breakfast and the interaction with the B&B host. (My partner, on the other hand, was not bothered.) Lavender and Lace has a lot going for it. The location is pretty wonderful - away from traffic and well within the historic district. We could easily walk to shops, restaurants, and the sea/bay. Rooms also come with a parking spot, which is a major plus in this neighborhood of narrow streets and limited on-street parking. The innkeeper also provides bikes for guest use, so we spent many hours tooling around the city at our leisure. The basics are also well covered. The room includes wifi, telephone, and cable television. There are some books, but no board games. (Sniff.) The neighborhood is quiet, and we didn't have much problem going to sleep. The flat roof (or maybe the attic) is home to a critter (squirrel or mouse, maybe?), which caused some scampering noise at night. It didn't bother me, but my easily-distracted partner lost some sleep over it. Other things you should know: the innkeeper doesn't accept credit cards - cash and check only. Additionally, she is *extremely* reluctant to accept bedandbreakfast.com gift cards, even though her website indicates she does.

There was a "bouncer" outside who gave my girlfriend and I a hard time about simply walking into the hotel (short guy in an xxs tight shirt on to paint the picture). Typically nice hotels have a friendly doorman to greet you - for some reason they had the complete opposite of that - bold strategy. Go to the hotel bennett or Elliott house instead.
