Staying at a friends house in Jersey and her husband said he always got $9.99 / lb. lobsters here! So I took a gander upon arrival saw they were $15.99 but I've been wanting to cook them for a minute and still seemed like a decent price. So I got 2 that came to be about $23 a lobster. Upon walking in the store it seems very clean and there is a LARGE amount of seafood offered. Along with many Asian pantry items and spices. I was able to get full sheet sea weed paper which I sometimes have a problem finding in my local grocery store in manhattan. The lobsters turned out AMAZING! Honestly one of my favorites, was my first time cooking as well. I've definitely had my shared cooked for me so I think I like to know what I'm talking about. This is our go to fish market on Central Ave. Fair prices and fresh fish, shellfish, and some vegetables and shelf safe foods such as canned sauces, dry rice noodles, etc. A limited but good selection of South East Asian products. Don't expect anything fancy or wholefoods experience, this is a local, mom and pop type of fish market but great variety and freshness. Some people mentioned the "fishy smell" but come on, this is a fish market. That is unavoidable when these folks are cleaning and cutting the fish for you in-house even if the fish is super fresh. The freshness of the seafood here is something that keeps bringing me back. This is a Chinatown style fish market with some produce. What they stock is amazing because if you're looking for a quick way to make an inexpensive and healthy meal 555 is all you need. They run out of oysters fairly quickly and are at high demand here. 555 is a godsend! I wanted a place to get seafood in the area so bad. Seafood is hard to come by in the Heights. And you have to be crazy to get any meat from Stop and Shop All fish here is very fresh. They got live tilapia, catfish, lobster, crab, and other fish. The fish selection is great: never frozen trout, rainbow trout, porgy, snapper, tile fish, and more. They also got never frozen salmon fillet and steaks for $6.99/lb, and they are delicious. Of course you can get shellfish and squid as well! The shop also sells some produce and cooking ingredients. And if you are not up to cooking you can buy prepared fish (it seems like it is mostly fried). I have not tried the prepared fish, next time. Most importantly, prices cannot be beat for selection and quality. You'll be paying more at Shop Rite for worse quality, and you'll be paying A LOT more for same quality at places like Whole Foods or Morton Williams. Think Chinatown seafood prices and quality. I've been in he Heights for a long time, and I COMPLETELY agree that we need a place to get great fish, this however isn't really the place. I've gone a few times so this isn't just from one experience. I'm a huge salmon fan and while the prices are very reasonable, it's always super fatty and slightly fishy. I've had good experiences with the shrimp and muscles. Also, the guy who portions the fish always tries to get you to buy more than what you ask for so he doesn't have to cut a piece for you. DO NOT fall for that! If you want a pound, make sure you walk out of there with a pound. read more

First thing, the place didn't smell like rotting death like it does in the Chinatown fish markets. The fish were all buried in ice and presumably fresh. I asked for a dozen clams and half dozen oysters. When I started driving away I noticed they gave me a dozen clams and half a dozen... clams. Irritated, I went back and even though they had closed shop, they switched my clams for oysters and gave me an extra one. All the crustaceans were alive and very cold. I give it a 4.5 stars because of the messed up order, and there wasn't a huge selection. but otherwise everything seemed fresh and reasonably priced read more

I really wanted to like this place, but alas these guys are selling bottom of the bucket fish. Ordered 2 red snappers and a dozen clams. The red snapper when I received them already had a lingering odor. Not something you experience in fresh fish. By the time I brought it home it had a terrible film that developed. There was no way of salvaging it. You cannot serve fish like this. Management needs to step up and stop the sell of stuff like this. The clams were tasty, but it does not take away from rotting fish. I should've been smarter about what I bought, but at the end of the day they should not be selling those fish. Will not buy from here again. read more

Basing this review purely on the raw fish and no prepared foods - this place is Chinatown legit and you shouldn't let the strong fish smell deter you. It's the best seafood vendor in the Heights and they will do everything to a fish that I don't want to do (scale, gut, filet) if you want them to for no extra charge. This place re-opened and is now called "235 Fish Market." So far they have a good selection of seafood from shrimps, squids, octopus, clams, mussels, porgy, flounder, butter fish, etc. They also sell several East & Southeast Asian vegetables, spices and condiments. read more

I have been coming here since the day it opened. They have such a great variety of whole fish, fish that are in season, and live fish. By far one of the best new businesses up in the Heights. I walked by today and saw some Vietnamese brand foods in the window and immediately went in. Yes, while most reviews are about this place and their fish, I went in to see their Asian grocery aisle! They have Vietnamese, Chinese and Thai brands of bottled sauces, noodles, rice and some canned goods. Yay! I picked up some vermicelli noodles and skin for summer rolls and black Thai rice. I'm so excited that I found a small selection to hold me over till I make the big trips to Chinatown. read more

I cannot speak about the quality of the fish here because I didn't have a chance. I asked for 4 King Fish Steaks. He asked me how many pounds I explained I have no idea how much that would weight he then asked if I was sure that I could afford it...I have never been so insulted. As a 45 year old African American woman I could not help but feel insulted and humiliated. I still tried purchasing and told him the price did not matter he asked me to prove it...UNBELIEVABLE. I want to be a fan of every new business in my area, but unfortunately I can't be a fan of 555 Fish. Stopped in recently to pick up some shrimp right before closing. There were 4 or 5 different metal bins resting on ice with different shrimp at different prices. I picked large shrimp for 5 or 6 dollars a pound. So far so good. The guy behind the counter bags the shrimp and takes them to the register, rings me up, I pay, and then pick up my bag with the shrimp. Here is where the problems start. I touch the bag of shrimp and the shrimp are completely warm, I mean room temperature warm. I asked the clerk why the shrimp are not cold and was repeatedly told it was ok, they had just put the shrimp out to defrost. I open the bag to feel the shrimp, none of the shrimp are frozen and all of the shrimp are room temperature or warmer. I point out that shrimp are supposed to be cold and ask if they have any shrimp that are cold, to which the reply was "all like this". The solution offered was to add ice to the bag now, for my walk home. The clerk also mentioned I should keep the receipt and bring it back or call if there was a problem with the shrimp. No concern about the shrimp being room temperature when purchased. At this point I was too frustrated to explain to a clerk in a Fish Market that seafood should be kept cold and not at room temperature, so I left and threw the bag of shrimp out on my way home. I took a few days to think about my experience, thinking I must have gotten the wrong clerk or something, or maybe I'll go back and try the salmon, but I am afraid I can't bring myself to go back to a fish market that sells room temperature shrimp, even if my experience was a freak occurrence. I will say, I know people who have bought fish here with no problems, hence two stars instead of one. read more

As a fish market, they would not take the shells of shrimp I wanted to purchase. I was told they do not do that. I then asked if they would filet the fish I was going to buy and told they do not do that either. First rule of fish, if you can smell it, it is not fresh. You can smell the fish outside the closed door on the street. Second rule of fish, even if it is fresh, if the market stinks, then it is not clean. A good fish market should not have a strong odor. The odors come from bacterial build-up. So, either this market has some old fish or they do not clean their store - either way, this is food poisoning waiting to happen. Me, I went in there hoping to get some crawfish. If they had it, it would have been packaged and frozen so maybe it would be alright. I get I have a south Louisiana twang, but crawfish and COD fish are two different things. As both a Southern fried fish eater AND a biologist, give this place a pass. read more
