We took our dog here after a neighbor's recommendation, and seeing good reviews. Dr K performed a thorough examination and took a lot of time discussing what the issues could be. He is very-very caring. Lab work was recommended, and seemed high priced. We inquired as to the cost of teeth cleaning and it was close to $500. That's a lot, but it does include blood work. We opted for a visit to the Heights Animal Hospital, Dr Dawson, where it was half of that price. With two dogs, that saved $500 total, very much worth the drive. The receptionist was a little too smug and unfriendly. I asked for a receipt and she related she would email it. She was more concerned with her nails. The receipt didn't come, so I called and asked again. Once more, it didn't come, so I had to go there to get it. That was a needless hassle. I've been in to 242 Animal Hospital many times over the last few years and I have always had a good interaction Dr. K. This morning I called to try and set up an appointment to get my dogs ears looked at because of a possible infection. I let the person know that the last few times that I brought her in, the antibiotic, Mometamax, that they have given me doesn't seem to be working anymore & that I would like to try another alternative treatment . I also asked if I could make an appointment for tomorrow (10/25) , to which she then proceeded to ask me " why don't you want an appointment for today?" She then continued to tell me that it HAS been working because I haven't been in anymore and that she was trying to "educate me". So instead of continuing the conversation, I thanked her, told her to have good day and ended the call. I waited about 10 minutes and called back, because obviously, my dog is the priority. Upon answering the call, I informed her of who I was and that I was calling back and that I would like to just go ahead and make an appointment for today, to which she then proceeded to tell me that I was barred as a client because "I don't trust them". I told her that I do trust Dr. K and that's the reason that I've even been returning. I asked if he was available to speak, she put me on on hold, and when she returned to the call, she proceeded to tell me that she was his wife and that she did not believe that we were a good fit. By the end of the call, we ended up being able to come to a common ground and to discuss how the initial call was not appropriate. She also decided to take me on as a client again, to which I agreed. But as the hours have passed since the call, it just does not sit right with me how rude and nasty it was. Especially because I never once disrespected her, I didn't get mean or even rude. And I was treated so poorly because she felt that her need to "educate me" and for me to take her word as law, was more important than the matter at hand; my dogs swollen and bleeding ears. As a pet owner that goes above and beyond for my dog, to be made to feel like I'm neglecting her is a terrible feeling. When I'm willing to spend my hard earned money to take whatever avenues are necessary to get her treatment. And for that I will not be returning. It saddens me because I really do respect Dr. K as a veterinarian, and I've loved all of his staff for the years that I've been going there, but unfortunately, his wife ruined that all in just a 10 minute phone call read more

It was my dogs first puppy vet visit and they made her feel so uncomfortable. They acted like they were scared of her. They didn't even want to touch her. Please also be aware that there is a dress code that is expected of the owner or they can refuse business. I wish they told me that prior to my visit and not at the end. I felt like I was being judged for wearing a tank top and shorts to take my dog in to get care. No wonder why my dog felt so uncomfortable! read more

DO NOT COME HERE. This horrible place does not even deserve 1 star. If you are in a dire situation please seek help elsewhere if possible cause this place shows no compassion and is absolutely no help. I brought my dog in for accidentally getting into some multivitamin dog treats and she ate the whole bag. As soon as i got here i was obviously worried but they showed no understanding. Instead i was put into a room and waited for over 40 minutes before finally being seen and was told i needed to contact poison control before they could do anything. Afterwards, the "doctor" came in and stated the poison control provided a course of action that costs up to 900$. I informed them i couldn't afford this and asked if they had any payment plans to which they responded " we sometimes offer them to people but that's not something we offer" wtf??? After they knew i could not pay 900$ they were no help. After continuous back and forwards we finally decided to have my dog throw up the treats with medication. The doctor never came in to check on my dog after the initial treatment plan(900$) was discussed. Instead the receptionist kept coming in. At the end i found out all of the "treatments" were NOT even recommended by poison control. They report from poison control stated to start by having her throw up as much as possible then if UNSUCCESSFUL proceed with the additional treatments. This was never discussed instead they wanted me to pay for treatments upfront that were not even necessary. My dog ended up throwing up most if not all of the vitamins & afterwards they kept pushing for me and pet to leave. I continuously asked if I should monitor my pet for certain behaviors etc. and they were no help. Instead they kept telling me to "read the report" from poison control. I would never bring my pet here & i regretted it from the moment i entered. The entire staff was very dismissive and clearly the main objective was to get me to spend as much as possible and when i said no they did not care to provide any treatment for my pet. Horrible horrible place. Not to mention a maybe 10 year old kid checked me out when it came to pay( he did not even know how to swipe a card). DO NOT COLE HERE!!! read more

Dr. Kottenstette is a very professional veterinarian who takes the time to hear your concerns, look over your pet, administer the appropriate lab work, prescribe the right meds, and get your pet back home. A most helpful feature of 242 Animal Hospital is their operating hours and their ability to get your pet an appointment to be seen promptly. Let's face it--this is Houston--we all often only have time after 5pm to get things done and Dr. Kottenstette is aware of that and he's there for you and your pet to be seen in a timely manner. I had called on a vet closer to my home only to find that their office could not accommodate an appointment for a week while Dr. Kottenstette's Office arranged for an appointment later that afternoon about 3 hours after I called. Dr. Kottenstette has a great attitude, very cordial--I know you can trust him. His staff are also really nice and accommodating to your pet. 242 Animal Hospital is worth the drive. DO NOT take your animals here. They gave my dog antibiotics, handed the bottle to me, then took the bottle back, saying they'd take it upfront and give it to my family. When I got home, we found they did not, but they charged me. When I called to ask them, they said it was still there, and I could come back to pick it up. They wouldn't refund my card the money, without me being there. I had to do a charge back with my credit card. When I asked them if they could call in a local prescription to a pharmacy near me, they hung up on me. I called multiple times the following week and got the voice mail. When I called today, a guy answered and said per the voice mails it was sent to a local pharmacy, but the wrong one. I asked if he could send it to the right one, and gave him the phone # and he said sure. 2 hours later waiting on my dogs medicine, I call back and a nasty woman answers, she says I called and told them to send it to a CVS,(my phone records would confirm this call never happened) she said multiple employees were apparently listening to this one phone call (that never happened) and they ALL heard me say send it to CVS. (Side note) isn't it amazing this place isn't helping animals, it using its workforce to have multiple people listening to phone calls, according to her.. annnnyways..(good thing thats not true, cuz the call never happened) After being insulted and saying I made a phone call to people I didnt make, and the guy I talked to earlier, said it was sent in based on the voice-mail I did leave, she said she isnt going to "follow me around" as I keep changing my mind. I checked the prices and they are currently most expensive, so I think this woman sent them there, just to cost me more money, as they didnt get the RX sale.. So if in an emergency with your pet you wish to be jerked around by an office manager, look no further, this woman will do it for you. read more

Do not go to this facility ever! This past weekend one of our Rescue dogs was taken to this facility and the vet, without written or verbal consent, euthanized the dog. The facility had called the head of the organization that morning and said it was a quality of life exam and it was explained the protocol that needed to be followed. The girl working the front desk replied, " I know what protocol is and I will send over a form having the Rescue give the authorization". That was at 9:30 a.m. and the dog was euthanized at 6:00 p.m. when the foster brought him in. No phone call to this day from this facility nor was permission was asked for. The lack of ethics by 242 Animal Hospital is concerning as I guess they can euthanize any dog they want without the permission of the owner. Came in today to have my dog evaluated, and was kicked out! The vet came in with no greeting and was speaking to me very bluntly. Made me feel embarrassed for having a lower income as well. He made it seem like my dog was about to roll over and die. He lacked compassion and so I said that to the technician. After waiting for a fecal test, the manager steps in to let me know that I need to leave because they can't provide service if I don't trust the provider. I didn't say anything about trust. I'm sure he knows the science, but he lacks customer service and humanity. They were so wrong for this. I wouldn't advise bringing your babies here! read more

Today, our puppy seemed lethargic and vomited, so I took him to 242 Animal Hospital. They promptly diagnosed and treated him, all the while comforting this worried "dad." Horrible people! My dog can't walk and I have a brace on my wrist, told me they cant help get her out of the car, do to she might run off. Never has that ever happened. It took me sometime to gather my thoughts before writing this post. I wanna do so without making it too lengthy but first and foremost, if you think you can bring your pet here in an emergent situation, I warn you to stop. And go somewhere else. To be exact, emergency pet care of Texas. They are incredible and will treat you and your pet with respect, dignity, and love. My husband and I had to put down our Police dog due to what I believe to be negligence and mal practice from this doctor. He is probably one of the most arrogant, inconsiderate, rude people I've ever dealt with. Our dog took a tumble at the park and didn't recover well. My husband was concerned and took him home, hoping he just over did it and would be ok. I was out of town for my bachelorette and unfortunately having to deal with all this via phone. To summarize what was a very long, painful experience for my family. This doctor failed to do an X-ray or any scan to see what was going on. He claimed Axel was dehydrated and in heat stroke. Had he done a full assessment physically, he'd be able to see that there was more to it than that. He started Axel on IV fluids, told my husband he could take him to the emergency center but that he could treat him just the same and they'd charge a lot. Being that we are not vets ourself, we trusted his judgment. Axel started shaking at the vet and they claimed he was cold from the fluids (where my husband had to ASK for blankets while my dog was shivering wet on a cold tile floor and the nurse wanted to make jokes instead of help comfort him). He sent Axel home and stated to follow up in the morning. When axel got home he pooped straight blood. My husband called and the nurse told him "that's ok it's normal and expected". Axel then began to seize. Which they also told him via phone was probably just residual "shaking" from being "cold" from the fluids. At that point even from me seeing ON FACETIME, I knew it was bad and told him to rush him elsewhere. By the time he got to Texas Emergency Pet Care, there was nothing they could do and had to put our baby down. I see on here people trying to defend this dude. And I see the people with similar experiences. Sure, if your dog needs a shot maybe he's not the worse. But if they need a doctor who cares more than just about money and can critically think in an emergent situation, this isn't the place. I returned to speak with Dr. Kottenstette in hopes to get understanding and closure. I got everything but that and he assured my feeling that he wasn't thorough and knowledgeable enough to help my dog. When asked why he didn't do an X-ray, he stated "I was trying to save you money". When asked why he sent him home he stated "he perked up and seemed ok" when asked if he thought axel was gonna make it given everything, he stated "no". But he still sent my husband home with 2 medications one of which was 30 days worth and charged us like our dog had a chance when he himself admitted he didn't think he did. After much discussion with many different veterinarians and the trainer of his police department it seems my dog hemorrhaged. Given his presentation many stated scans should've been done immediately. Let's also address the fact my dog didn't even have a fever at any point of this treatment to be deemed a heat stroke. By the time he got home he was in such shock from the internal bleeding, he went into cardiac arrest. Had the doctor simply done a scan or more thorough testing, maybe Axel would still be here. There's nothing to say because I'll never know for sure. But I'm beyond disappointed with the service we received and heart broken because we will never get him back. When speaking with this vet I hoped to get a sense of remorse, or at least I should've done XYZ or how about a simple..I'm sorry for your loss? Instead he said he'd do the same thing all over again. That's scary. This isn't to bash him or his practice, it's to bring awareness that this dude isn't a good pet doctor. RIP Axel- Enjoy all the toys in heaven buddy (Zero Stars) read more

The practice is family owned and operated, they are truly a loving and caring family. I recommend not only for emergency services but also routine care. They're hours and availability are great. I don't know about the quality of service, the doctor seemed concerned enough I suppose. I called ahead and asked the cost of just coming in and it was $59 dollars. I went in and the doctor suggested an x-ray. I asked how much it would cost and he said $200. I hesitate for a minute and agree to the $200 dollar charge. After the x-ray we go over them for a minute then he tells me he sent them to the radiologist for further review. He then comes back and gives my dog a shot. I thank him, he thanks me and I go to checkout. "That'll be $453.00". WOAH. FULL STOP. Why? "Well visit was $59, the X-ray was $200, the radiologist review was $103, the shot was $50, this prescription is $16 and this one is $25. Charging for the medicine make sense but the doctor NEVER mentioned a $103 charge for "radiologist review". Also if your going to put a $50 dollar shot into my dog I need you to tell me first! This. Is. Fifty. Dollars. Extremely dissatisfied. I spent all that money and in the end didn't get any real answers. Just for complete clarity, after a made a little stink about $103 charge they eventually took it off. This was only after him telling me that it couldn't be done because he already sent the request. B.S.! Send another email and tell whoever not to look at it. "Duh, okay. I guess I can do that." Yea... doctor playing dumb. I got out of there at $340. Again highly dissatisfied. read more
