279? More like 666... I was here last week, and we had by far the worst customer service l've ever received in my entire life. The place was also just really gross as well. If you want to go on a sight seeing tour of piss spots and pubic hair on the toilet seat of the men's bathroom - this is your place. The blonde owner of the bar was extremely rude and kept purposely avoiding our table for over half an hour while talking to the table in front of us with her arm above the chair cushion of the booth. I read through the other reviews here, it seems like it's a common occurrence. She finally comes over to give us the menus, and she starts taking orders of people JUST WALKING INTO THE BAR. My friend tried to go up to the bar and get our orders that way - the bartender took everyone's orders EXCEPT HERS. Keep in mind this is after an extremely wait in between and she was waiting for 20 minutes while she's taking the orders of people who just sat down. We did not do anything to provoke ignoring us like this at all... Then when our sweet potatoes fries did arrive and were finished, she snatched them off the table real aggressive without even looking at us. 279, keep up the nasty behavior if you want your profits to go down to 000. If you have a choice between 279 or prison, choose prison because at least you know they have to serve you food there. read more

I've been hearing good things about the 279 for quite some time. I just keep forgetting it's there. We finally made it to the 279 last evening and I will be coming back very soon!! Everything brought to our table was delish and from the looks of the food all scratch made! The soup list blew me away! While I would have normally ordered the crab or lobster bisque, it was a bit late for a heavy cream based soups. I opted for the chicken noodle.. It was obviously homemade and fantastic. Chicken Noodle sounds like a boring soup, but it is rarely done properly! 279 got it right.. I also tried their wings.. I ordered them Xtra, Xtra, Xtra crispy.. They actually came out to my liking! Their Hot Blue wing sauce was perfect. Just the right amount of heat for me and the sauce had plenty of blue cheese crumbles. Our table ordered two different burgers. Both looked fantastic! They were fresh not frozen. Wifey said hers was fantastic! Someone at our table ordered the crab cakes and said how good they were. I rarely like fresh cut fries. Most places have no clue how to execute them correctly and you end up with greasy rubber pencils. 279 did a really great job! I was a little disappointed in the cheese sauce that my wife got on the side with her fries. I would have expected a scratch made beer cheese sauce, but it was from a can, and it wasn't even the highly prized Cheez Wiz.. The 279 is a hidden gem! I'll be back here here very soon! Wow completely unacceptable experience at this establishment.. We are vegetarian and ordered tofu bites, the food came out the waitress even called them "tofu". Had one bite in hopes of enjoying a piece of tofu, turns out it was chicken. Disgusting and repulsive for a VEGETARIAN of 10 years. Along with that the "veggie delight pasta" was nothing but delightful. We found hairs in our pasta, it was DRENCHED in oil (after we asked for light oil), and there were five pieces of vegetables. Service was also horrid, no one checked back with us after they gave us the right order, getting the check took 25 minutes. Fantastic wings, had a dozen of the habanero split with the cucumber wasabi wings. Really enjoyed them. The wings were cooked perfect and the drink prices are pretty good as well. Overall I spent a solid 4 hours and had a great time will return. read more

My family and I have come here before with pleasant experiences each time. Recently we've heard management changed and wanted to check it out. We stopped by around 5pm on a Saturday. It was empty save for a few patrons at the bar, so we figured food would be quick and fresh. My classic burger was done perfectly, a nice medium rare still warm and juicy with tasty fresh cut fries. We also had the hot honey garlic wings and "death touch" wings. They were crisp and juicy. Death touch was actually spicy, hot honey garlic was more on the honey side, but still good. Our table also had scallops with risotto, and fish and chips. Both were found to be flavorless. The fish was completely bland and we had to ask for tartar sauce to give it any flavor. The coleslaw tasted very odd and was not eaten. Scallops were advertised as under 12 size, but were clearly much smaller. The muscles on the scallops were not removed and they were severely overcooked. Tasted as if they were cooked earlier then reheated. The risotto looked like scrambled eggs (not the creamy texture you'd normally see) and was completely flavorless as well. Not even some chopped parsley on top to add some flavor or visuals. We've had the scallops and risotto before and they were delicious, this time was completely different. Summed up: the bar food was good, the sit-down restaurant type food was extremely disappointing. Contacted the kitchen manager the next day, starting off by saying the burger and wings were very good, but the rest was very disappointing. Manager said "oh, ok" and nothing more. I'm disappointed that they weren't more upset by bad food coming out of their kitchen. 279 was recommended by a friend so we decided to give it a go. There were six of us total. My first reaction/opinion of the restaurant was that it reminded me more of a sports bar than an upscale restaurant considering the prices they charge. To start, we ordered the tempura battered jumbo black prawns, Thai style, with gorgonzola cheese. So, no Gorgonzola at all. Hardly tasted the Thai sauce. No flavor. Maybe a suggestion would be to have the Thai sauce as a dipping sauce? So eh, to the shrimp. Anytime filet mignon is offered on the menu, I jump at it. BUT, there were other awesome choices I wanted to try. I decided on Veal Scallopini and Colossal Crab Mediterranean. It was delicious. Crab meat was cooked well. I thought the veal would have been in smaller pieces due to the title of the dish, but still good. Came with artichokes, grilled broccoli, and tomatoes. Fingerling potatoes with garlic and parm cheese served on the side. The bathrooms are very nice. There's a very nice picture of a male model above the toilet. :) My favorite dessert is Tiramisu. It was listed on their menu so I HAD to try it. The presentation of the dessert was great. Our thoughts on it wasn't as good. The cream was a bit thick and very, very salty. I understand what the chef was trying to do with adding a touch of salt, but this went a little overboard. Overall not bad, but wouldn't get again. The service started out pretty good. The server didn't really know the menu. We asked questions and she didn't know the answer. She was at least considerate and went back to the kitchen to get the answer. After we were done eating our entree, she never removed the plates from the table. Weird? Yes. We ate dessert while still looking at our entree plates. Overall experience. Not great. read more

Will not go back, highly disappointed! Save your time, and money, and stay away. Me and my husband only went, so we could finally use our gift card that we received this past Christmas (2023) as a gift. Let me start by saying our waitress was so nice and thoughtful, and our food was mediocre. What made the experience SO BAD was the owner, Michelle. First instance, their were 2 reservations under the name Becky. So, when faced with the choice where we wanted to sit "first to arrive", we clearly chose the hightop vs. the table. After getting our apps and several rounds of drinks, the owner comes over demanding us to move, stating she herself reserved that table for her friend. We've been sitting their and didn't want to move, so my husband simply stated that we had a reservation under Becky and that this was our table. She told him that their was no reason for the bad attitude. He was upset, but whatever - we brushed it off. Our waitress apologized. We continued on with our night. Then, when it came to our bill, we tried to use our $75 dollar gift card that we just got 4 months ago. She attempted to say that it wasn't valid because it was from a previous owner. When infact, it was from when SHE WAS OWNER! Our waitress defended us to her, and she allowed us to use it. We were so happy to get out of their. I just feel bad for the woman who have to have her as a boss, seems to me they'd do better running the place themselves. She treated her "friends" better then new people walking in the door. 10/10 for the waitress. 7/10 for the food. 0/10 for the owner shitty attitude. Will not be returning. Also, the band "JOB" was absolutely terrible. Played crappy music that only a certain select group of people liked. Not at all impressed by 279. After hearing rave reviews by other Yelpers and a few other friends, it was quite the letdown. The server was friendly but very uninformed. Didn't know what beers were on tap other than Miller, Coors and Bud. Several questions about the menu were unknown although she did find the answers after consulting with the kitchen. Asked to split the check evenly which would have been around $35 per person, but each person was charged a seemingly random amount. The tempura prawn appetizer was lackluster. Breading was soggy and falling off and not much flavor to the dish. Also overpriced at $11 for 3 shrimp. I had the crab cake entree which was really good, but the sides left a lot to be desired. The Fillet Mignon was well prepared, as was the risotto that accompanied it. The other entrees ordered by our table were just OK. Veal was a little tough and lacked flavor. Grouper was overdone and not anything to write home about. Dessert was just awful. Overall, for me, it felt like it was a bar trying to be a restaurant, but not going the extra mile to complete the transformation. read more

We had a party of ten on a Sunday afternoon for mother-in-law's birthday. We were the only table in the place: there were one, maybe two people at the bar (at 5pm). Server was April (or Amber). She did a good job. The food was hit and miss. We had appetizers (nachos, pepperoni and cheese egg rolls, soft pretzel with cheese). The apps came out a little slow but were good. The entrees took forever to come out (apps were long gone and salads were finished for quite a bit of time) and there was A LOT of time between the first plate and last plate being served - maybe 15 minutes. April apologized profusely, but it didn't get the food out any quicker. We had two orders of bites, two lemon garlic chicken dinners (much too salty- used garlic salt maybe and chicken had no color - looked boiled or poached, pasta was still a bit crunchy), chicken tenders (were ok), a chicken salad (looked good), a cheese steak, a crab cake sandwich and two burgers One order of chicken bites was WAY over cooked, dry and hard (sauce was tasty, though). The quality of the food was wildly inconsistent. If I had a guess, the cook was hung over from prior night or called off and some poor dishwasher was promoted to cook for the day. (I was a server for a long time and recognize the signs) I was highly disappointed, especially since I have seen good reviews in the past. Look, I'll be the first to admit, Marty's is the only place that can temp a steak in NEPA. So, I gave up completely and just order rare steaks and hope it doesn't go above medium. Needless to say, when I ordered the fillet and Cajun shrimp, I ordered it rare (it was even rare on the receipt). My filet was more of a medium well to well done. Basically, for me, it was ruined. If you like well-done, picture getting a perfect rare steak and you'll understand my complaint. The shrimp had great flavor, but two of three required partial shell removal. I don't even know what to say about that. My potatoes were great (one of the reasons for the two stars). The veggies were fine. The price would have been excellent if the food was fine ($28, I think). The waitress was great. But at the end of the day, when you order fillet and shrimp; they're supposed to be the stars of the plate. I used to go here in my younger days when they first opened. It was a cool place. Neat bar, with unique, tasty bar food. I used to order steak bites back then and surprisingly, they weren't well done, but that was probably three years ago. Now, it's a strangely noisy restaurant with a band loading in while you're eating an over-cooked filet. Would I got back? Yes, but only as a bar. The burgers looked awesome! TVs everywhere for watching a game. I'm sure it's a wild atmosphere for a PSU game. As a dining restaurant, I'll pass every time. In short, go there for burgers and beer. Came here for Mother's Day. Couldn't wait to try it. The food was excellent with one exception. Two people at our table ordered crab cakes, both were extremely cold in the middle. one person partially ate their crab cake. we sent them back. The chef threw them back into a deep fryer even the partial eaten one and threw them back on the plate and returned them to our table and they were almost like grease patties. We made our complaints to our server who was extremely nice, not once but twice, So she reported it back to the chef. And nothing. Place was virtually empty at 6pm on a Saturday. Service was friendly and on task. Veggie burger was a hash of fried greasy vegetables on a Kaiser roll that fell out as soon as I picked it up. Cooked spinach AND romaine lettuce? Tomatoes were in season at the time but the pinkish frozen variety were used. French fries were not hand cut and had that starchy, flaky coating like fast food fries. My guests had the classic beef burgers and they had similar complaints. Ingredients didn't seem fresh and the patty lacked flavor. Seems more of a bar at this point and I would possibly return for a happy hour drink if I was in the immediate vicinity. That being said I've had better food at other bars. I don't like giving 2 stars but it seems they aren't even trying here. I had heard really good things about this place so I wanted to like it. I am not fond of the yellow, gray & black decor. I ordered the chicken & shrimp Alfredo. The shrimp & chicken were of a nice size. However, they had so much black pepper on them, it was very hard to enjoy them. My companion ordered the pulled pork burger which he enjoyed. The service was great, our waitress was attentive without being obtrusive. She brought out warm sliced bread + EVOO which was a nice touch. I might come back if I special catches my eye but I won't go out of my way to eat here. And, I will ask for the lightest touch when it comes to black pepper. read more

After hearing some good things about 279 a group of us decided to try them out on a recent Friday night. I like the fact that there are a lot of TVs and plenty of baseball games were on to watch but they definitely seem all over the place in terms of what they are trying to be. It seems like part sports bar because of this, but then they also had live entertainment starting up around the time we were leaving. During our dinner there was also a wide variety of music playing, so I don't really know how to classify them on this front. As far as the food is concerned, we were all very happy with our meals. They offer different dinner specials during the week that are a little bit more on the pricy side ($20-30) for many of the entrees. I went with the 279 burger, which also comes with fries as the burger options are much cheaper. The burger had some sort of sriracha mayo on it which I loved (along with everything else about the burger). The fries were really good, too. They have a decent beer selection (bottles and draft beer) as well. My biggest complaint is that they give you a menu with all of these other options on it to choose from. I was set to order the Porketta Pocket that was listed, and my friends planned to order from this menu as well. When we went to order, however, we were told that you can only choose from the dinner specials or the burgers, leaving most of the items on the menu we were given not available. I'm not sure when you can order the other items as this was at 8 o'clock on a Friday, so I think they need work on that situation. read more

We have been back twice since our first visit and have had wonderful experiences both times. As my husband pointed out, we rarely go back to a restaurant twice in a year, let alone twice in a a week We are making reservations for next Monday as well. The meals here are just out of this world, especially for this Valley where it's hard to find real restaurants that actually prepare your food , not fast food and chains. If you like Aurants, you will enjoy the 279. Not as quirky but definitely the same kind of fine dining. The staff is so friendly and make you feel at home right away. My wife and I had a spectacular meal at 279. After hearing so much about it early in the summer, I decided to wait it out until they were open for a while. The ambience in the place is surprisingly nice for casual fine dining - although there were so many tv's on, it was a little distracting. We ordered the crab cake app after getting our drinks from the waitress, who appeared to be wearing a tank top, which was odd. The crab cake was amazing. Perfect all around, easily the best I've had in the area. My wife and I decided to share entrees so I got the tuna and she ordered the filet. We both were shocked by how good they were. Fish tasted like it was flown by Learjet. Overall, we were stunned at the extremely high quality of the food. I normally review pizza joints, but this place was an exception. This place has potential. There is clearly some talent in the kitchen. However, there is room for improvement. I was hoping for a five star experience based on the on the first reviewer's review, but I got a three star. Three is good, don't get me wrong, and with a few minor tweaks I'm sure 279 Bar and Grill will do just fine. In fact, I'd like to come back in a few months to gauge their progress. We ordered an appetizer to share, Thai shrimp something or other. It was presented nicely, but it didn't have much flavor. More salt or more of the Thai sauce would have helped immensely. For dinner I ordered the crab cakes. They were EXCELLENT! They were literally almost all crab, and I don't throw around the word literally like everyone else seems to these days. I would guess they were 97% crab. I honestly don't know how they stayed together. They were served with fingerling potatoes, broccoli and a cauliflower mash and, for some reason, chopped celery and sriracha. I could've done without the last two as they didn't really do anything for the dish. The others I was with seemed to be pleased with their entree choices as well. Dessert, however, was a bit weird. Again the group shared the dish, tiramisu, usually a favorite. But we were all taken aback by an odd addition....salt. While I didn't find it quite as offensive to my palate as one friend, I wasn't too enthusiastic about it either. Overall, I'd say I had a pleasant experience. The server was friendly, our food came out hot and we didn't wait for drinks. But after we finished our meals, our plates were never cleared. I commented to everyone at the table that this was odd because our server was very quick to clear the bread plates and appetizer plates and refill our drinks. The plates did get in the way when we were eating dessert, paying our bills and signing our checks. I look forward to coming back in a few months, after the bugs have been worked out. read more

I live right up the street and go here pretty often. Shannon the bartender is great and always treats us well -- appetizers are very tasty and the drinks are good ! I've had a lot of appetizers here and never had a problem. My boyfriend ordered the fried chicken and it came out raw, while I ordered the lamb chops and they were pretty raw too :/ they just got a new cook and a new menu so it's probably a work in progress. Everything is pretty pricey, but it's a nice environment and local. read more

Though I can feel my arteries closing with each bite (what else do you expect with a hamburger made with brisket?) it is worth it. Calamari app.- terrible! Prices High! Over rated! We new something was up when there were only 3 cars in the parking lot on Mother's Day eve. 6:30 pm. $$$-more misses than hits! Head waitress is defiantly hard core WB w/all the bad colloquialisms. Drinks/Beer selections are good but what are they trying to be? Fine dining, drinking or sports bar? The food here is incredible, and changes weekly. The venue itself is nice, if a little misplaced for it's neighborhood... My advice though, is to call ahead and make sure they have a regular menu the night you want to go, because they do a lot of parties / food samplings, etc. The service can be a little spotty as well, depending on night. It's something that has been changing for the better though. I highly recommend giving them a shot for dinner. read more
