    Altoona Sicilian Cuts
    Austin B.

tl;dr you must try a cut of the bizarre, deli sandwich-esque Altoona-style pizza at this popular central PA convenience store -- but don't by any means expect it to knock your socks off Altoona-style is an obscure regional pizza variant, served squarely in the center of Pennsylvania. For the uninitiated, this riff off Sicilian squares is topped with a thin layer of tomato sauce, sliced green peppers, genoa salami, and yellow American cheese. Altoona Sicilian was developed in the 60's at the now-burned-down Altoona Hotel, and it has since been carried on by a handful of local establishments. Nowadays, one of the "premier" purveyor of Altoona-style is 29th St Pizza Subs & More, a wholly unassuming neighborhood pizza joint a few blocks off the highway. The whitewashed shop stands out amid the brick and otherwise drably colored adjacent properties. The long, narrow single room is arbitrarily split into customer and staff spaces. A handful of bargain-bin booths, unsteady tables, and folding chairs constitute the "dining room." Large, double-doored coolers have everything from two-liter soda bottles to gallons of iced tea to pizza-making ingredients, and the checkout counter doubles as a cold-cut storage fridge. The ceiling skips between harsh fluorescent lights and schoolhouse acoustic ceiling tiles, while the walls are decked heavily with Pittsburgh sports memorabilia and historic, black-and-white photographs of Altoona. A medium-sized sign above the first window proudly proclaims, "Altoona Sicilian sold here." The shop remains quiet apart from the polite chatter among the staff. A buddy and I swung by 29th St for a quick pre-dinner snack during a road trip across PA. We arrived before weekday dinner and only encountered a handful of other patrons (all picking up moderately large orders of takeout). Nonetheless, the service was immediately warm and friendly. Ultra-friendly owner Steve Corklic did everything, from taking our order to helping out with the kitchen staff. The staff seemed to know all other customers on a first-name basis. I opted for 2 Altoona Sicilian cuts, and I watched a staff member fish out the squares from a large, premade sheet in the freezer and pop them into the oven. My buddy, meanwhile, ordered 2 standard slices. The meat toppings were separately heated and then haphazardly sprinkled atop already-cooked, plain cheese slices. After about 10 minutes, we were presented the moderately warm slices on enormous, stainless steel pizza trays, complete with a fork and dinner knife. The Altoona-style sported ultra-thick, undercooked, chewy crust with slightly melted American singles. Textures were mostly forgettable, but the combination of flavors was enjoyably reminiscent of a school cafeteria lunch. Meanwhile, the regular slices were nothing out of the ordinary. The thick, Papa John's-esque crust was mediocre at best, but, fortunately, the sweet, tangy sauce and unremarkable shredded cheese blend stretched all the way to the edge. At about $2.50 a slice, the pizza was a steal compared to a city slice shop. The sheer novelty of Altoona Sicilian will remain memorable for me, but the flavors and quality are nothing more than your run-of-the-mill neighborhood pizzeria. Nonetheless, 29th St is a quick, hospitable stop for one of the country's quirkier pizza varieties. I wish 29th St all the best, and I definitely hope they stay in business -- just not on the merit of their mostly dull food.

I think I am beginning to understand how there may be folks who have lived in Altoona all their lives, yet were unaware that Altoona Style pizza is a thing. I have been coming to this part of the country for decades and only recently heard of it, thanks to Instagram or Twitter or one of those twitchy visual platforms where a "pizza" covered with slices of American cheese can raise the ire of snobs and inspire the imaginations of the culinarily curious. Personally, I have one foot in each of those camps. However, I have come to peace with the idea of taking each food on face value for what it is, not what I think it ought to be. With that in mind, and having one prior Altoona Style pizza at at the corner bar just up the road, this is my favorite of the two. Your milage may vary. What sets the 29th street pizza cut apart is its more modest use of sauce. I also particularly enjoyed its higher crust with a crisp undercarriage. While I am far from an expert on the nature of different orange American cheese slices, these cuts were not completely dominated by the aggressive creaminess of the form, which is a good thing. I do think the salami could have worked harder... but so it goes. Our table also got a stromboli, a meatball sub, and a pepperoni pizza. All smalls. Each would be plenty for two adults to split. My favorite of the lot was the stromboli. There was clearly a lot of love that went into that hand-formed to order, meaty and cheesy crescent. I particularly enjoyed how thin and crisp they were able to make the crust. It was really a remarkable achievement. I was less into the quality of the deli cold cuts contained within, but that's a personal prejudice of mine and deli meat in general. It should be noted, that the cheese inside melted more like a brick cheese than mozzarella. It was fun in a soft oozing melty way, but felt a little out of place for this displaced New Yorker. What really set 29th Street Pizza apart from other places is just how dang friendly the folks are behind the counter, and how obviously delighted they are to receive folks from out of town. While we were in this small shop, there was a group from Colorado, and before we left there were some Carolinians who rolled up as well. Funny story. We bumped into those Carolinians at another classic Altoona eating establishment later in the day. The word is clearly out. Don't fret when Google Maps takes you into a residential neighborhood far from other restaurants. Fear not the locals inside. Everyone wants you to have a taste of this hidden-in-plain-sight central Pennsylvanian form of food.

Stopped here on a Friday evening to grab some takeout pizza. Ordered a pepperoni pizza and three slices of the Altoona style pizza. Pepperoni pizza was good - orange tint to the cheese - crust was very doughy - looked like a artisan bread you'd get from a baker. Really liked the Homestyle pizza and we pull highly recommend this. Staff was also very nice and accommodating. As for the Altoona style pizza - I'm glad we could get it in slices - bc it wasn't for me. But again the regular pizza was great.

    Pepperoni,mushroom, jalapeños and onion. Yummmmm

Excellent food. Was ready quickly too. Their pizza steak sub is a favorite along with their chef salad. They don't skimp on anything.

This pizza was great, not "Altoona pizza" at all (IYKYK). It was a very well executed NY style,…read morenot exactly NY but in the vicinity and very tasty. Crust was thin, light and airy - not doughy, perfect texture. Sauce was very robust. Perfect amount of grease to keep it from being bland w/o being overwhelming. Service was very good and it's a cute space inside. Hubs tried the coffee soda which wasn't personally to my taste, but he enjoyed it. If we'd been hungrier they had some desserts that looked good. We only come through one lunch a year on the way north, but I think we've found our place to stop each time.

We got a pizza steak sub, ham and cheese sub, chicken bacon wrap, and I personally tried the buffalo chicken wrap. (One of my favorite lunches!) I was so pleasantly surprised by the quality of the ingredients! Everything tasted fresh and the subs had homemade bread! Everyone really enjoyed their various sandwiches, and I especially enjoyed my wrap! It had quite a nice spicy kick! And a good ratio of chicken to sauce. I also enjoyed the additional veggies which added that perfect hint of crunch and freshness! Went to pick up our order and got a chance to look inside the restaurant. It was a really nice spot! I wasn't in there for very long but from what I could see it was clean and well taken care of. Unfortunately as I was picking up my order I lost something in the parking lot and didn't realize it until about two hours later. When I called and asked they were super kind and helpful about it and I was able to go and pick it up. The employees were super helpful and kind in this situation! This would definitely be nice place to go with family or friends or even to pick of a to go lunch for work. Nice place overall!
