I requested quotes for four other companies in our area and decided to go with Juan and his company as they had the most competitive offer for what I wanted installed. During my initial inquiry, I knew that I was going to get great service from the onset of our conversation. I requested a quote using his website and within an hour he contacted me and arranged to accommodate my schedule and came out on a Sunday to do a site survey. By Sunday evening I had an estimate and three days later his team of professionals were installing my new fence. They were extremely professional, polite and completed over 200' of red cedar fencing within two days. Additionally, they did an extremely detailed walkthrough and cleaned up all the debris. I have dogs, this was a very nice touch and spoke volumes to the quality of their work and I didnt have to worry about screws or nails being left in my yard. I plan on having them come out next year to install a wood Pergolas. Seriously, if you're in the Aurora area and looking for a new fence, Juan is your man.

UPDATE: Juan threatened my personhood & property - to illegally trespass on our property & remove…read morethe new fence & gate, which would also result in theft, as he removed our old fence & gate. I've been advised to report him to Denver Police & my attorney. ---- Over-promise & Under-deliver, with a side of machismo - by the owner: Juan. ----- It all started innocently, when I called Kim, the receptionist, for an estimate in late Sep or early Oct. Instead of sending a person out for an estimate, she told me all she needed was photos of my existing fence & gate, and from there, she'd create an estimate. At no point did she ask me for measurements, and - given I'm not in the fencing, gate, construction, painting, or staining industry - I trusted her & her boss, Juan, as well as foreman Raul and Ruin to guide me through the process. This is, after all, why I hired the job out, and hired what I thought were professionals. Instead, on the initial scheduled day, it came to my attention that they only purchased enough materials for a 6-foot fence & 6-foot gate, when it was clear - from the photos - that the fence was higher than the gate (8-feet). Raul & I canceled that job, and we re-scheduled from Mon 10/9 to Tue 10/17. In parallel, I was told by Kim that she/they could easily match the existing stain on my fence/gate, and I need not worry about finding a color. This was also untrue. After the reschedule, Kim asked me to find photos of stains I liked. I started on Home Depot, and they had hundreds, if not thousands, of brands, types of stains (oil-based or water-based), and colors. I had no idea where to start. Given I was hiring professionals - or so I thought - in order to narrow it down, I went to JCQN's Yelp page, and found photos of their past/sample work that I liked. I took photos of the fences & gates I liked - including style & color, and changed my initial fence/gate design from vertical pickets to horizontal, to be more modern. And I decided on a natural redwood stain, and sent photos of both the style I desired, and color. Kim & I resolved the initial measurement misunderstanding, and she was diplomatic, professional, and apologetic, acknowledging she should've explained the material measurements on the estimate, and asked me to measure & verify. Yes! Again, the reason you hire professionals, is for them to guide you with their experience. If I wanted to DIY, I would've gone to Home Depot myself, rather than to Yelp. I did not have the time - or interest - to DIY, which is why I trusted JCQN's multiple reviews, and nearly 5-star status. WRONG! Just like my beau has consistently been telling me - don't trust the reviews. I learned this lesson the hard way, with this company. Tue 10/17 came & went, and Ruin & another gentleman installed a great looking fence & gate - this time, with the correct measurements. Though I wanted to have it stained & sealed on the same day, fearing this exact situation, Kim told me the owner, Juan, said that's not possible, and the wood needs to "sit" for "one week" then it moved to "one and a half weeks," which raised suspicion. (Home Depot's paint/stain & lumber departments told me this was BS last night, as I suspected. If the wood is cedar - as I was told it would be, not fabricated, it does not need to sit before staining.) According to Juan/Kim, I had to wait 1-week, then 1.5-weeks, then only a few days to stain/seal. We scheduled it for Fri 10/20. Fri 10/20 arrived, and Kim canceled, saying Juan was too busy. I pulled rank. Then Juan was magically going to show-up after all. He arrived, with the wrong stain - not the one Kim & I discussed, and I selected. Juan attempted to gaslight & blame me - for his mistake - rather than accepting accountability & owning it, and that story is too long for the character limits of Yelp, unfortunately. Juan blamed me - the female customer. Juan blamed Kim - the female employee, including blaming her age: "she's only 20," vs. his "20-years of experience at age 50". Juan blamed me: "I only want to make you happy," attempting to imply I wouldn't be happy with my initial redwood stain selection, and I should go with the cedar/natural he brought, thinking he could manipulate me, in order to fix his mistake. It was a huge mess. Juan then refused to reschedule the job (something about his personal affairs & if he doesn't repair his son's house by next Tuesday, he'll "go to jail"), and now I'm stuck with a beautiful raw, wood fence & gate - that will mold & become useless the minute it rains or snows. Kim negotiated with Juan to refund me the $1,800 I paid for the fence & gate, but neither one of them can refund me the $1,840 worth of my billable *TIME* (that I can never get back) that I wasted on this nightmare. Luckily, I now have 1 other contractor scheduled for Monday, and 3 on stand-by, should that fall through, given the weather is getting colder, which is not ideal for staining.

We first hired him back when he was known as "Steve Beam Handyman," and it's been amazing to see him grow and expand his services with the launch of Denver Remodels Inc. Over the years, Steve and his team have tackled everything from small repairs (like anchoring heavy drapery hardware into our finicky plaster walls) to major renovations (like restoring the exterior of our 1908 Craftsman). One of our favorite projects was transforming our mudroom by removing a wall and building a custom breakfast nook. This was a complex project, but Steve's expertise and creativity shone through. He even suggested a design element in the booth walls that perfectly complemented the Craftsman lines of our home - it's those little details that make a huge difference. What we think truly sets Steve apart is his incredible craftsmanship, creativity, and his consultative approach. He takes the time to truly understand your vision and offers expert guidance throughout the design process. Whether you're tackling a small project or a major renovation, Steve's deep knowledge and experience are on display with every project he does. He's always there to answer questions, offer suggestions, and steer you in the right direction, ensuring that the final result is even better than you imagined. His team is equally fantastic - professional, efficient, and incredibly skilled. If you're looking for a reliable, knowledgeable, and truly exceptional remodeling experience in Denver, look no further than Steve Beam and Denver Remodels Inc. They're a standout and I'm so glad we found them.

REVIEW: Bryan gave an estimate for two jobs (a bird landing and a xeriscaping project). He didn't ask a lot of questions, which had me questioning his level of expertise, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money, so when I received his reasonable quote, I decided to hire him to do the landing. If that went well, I would hire him to do the xeriscaping job. Bryan estimated the job would take him 4 hours to complete and expected to be done by noon that day (6/25/2025). Although it took him 2 full days to complete the work, he did not change his estimate, which I did appreciate. He laid a new gravel base, and compacted it with a gas-powered plate compactor, but did NOT use screed rails--which most professionals use--to level the sand. When asked about leveling the sand, he said he "levels as he goes." I should have asked him to level the sand, but I accepted his response and let him continue. He completed laying pavers for the 5' x 5' section on the Day 1. The last 3 sections would be laid on Day 2 and would be finished with polymeric sand. We had a very heavy rain after the Day 1 and since polymeric sand is water-activated, I texted Bryan my concerns about how that would affect the polymeric sand application. We exchanged a few texts and his final response was, "I know what I am doing and this is what I do for a living. Can I just have some space to get the work done please. Thank you." Since he clearly had no interest in addressing my concerns and he obviously didn't appreciate my questions, I should have fired him then, but the work was half done, so I let him continue. We also had a brief, somewhat confrontational phone call in which he again ignored my concerns. By the time he finished, I just wanted him gone, so I gave the landing a cursory inspection, paid him via Zelle, and walked him out. It wasn't until after he left, that we really inspected the work. It was AWFUL! One section sloped up, another section sloped down, and one section was mounded (pics attached). While it wasn't highly visible to the eye, it was like walking on an undulating fun house walkway. The polymeric sand wasn't compacted into the pavers to ensure that the joints were completely filled, so cracks were visible around most of the perimeter pavers, one of the pavers was cracked, and the pavers along the perimeter of the largest section were crooked. He didn't blow off the excess sand to prevent it from hardening on the surface. I should have contacted Bryan and had him redo the pavers (or demanded a refund), but he clearly DIDN'T know what he was doing, and wasn't open to questions. Since I didn't want to deal with him ever again, I tore up the three smaller sections, leveled the sand using screed rails, and reset the pavers myself. I left the larger section alone, but it will eventually need to be redone. So, now I'm out the $530 I paid to Bryan, plus the additional cost of buying more materials to do the job correctly. Not to mention two days of my own time redoing the work of a hired contractor. Needless to say, I did not hire him to do the xeriscaping project and I would strongly advise against hiring him for any technical projects that involve leveling or patio pavers.

And I called one other company for a second bid. David showed up in time for our appointment, and his explanation of the problem (80 year old mortar in our brick house was falling out). The previous owner had gotten some of it repaired. That mortar was failing, too. I was particularly concerned because one pillar that carries a heavy load was cracked so badly (see photo) that you could see daylight through it from top to bottom. David explained why it had failed, and how the repair work someone had done years ago made matters worse. His bid that was about the same price as the other firm, but his explanation -- and the bid itself -- were so clear that D. Masonry was my obvious choice. He provided me with proof of insurance, too, a request the other company ignored. They lived up to my high expectations. Watching them work, I realized that tuck pointing is a highly skilled craft, practically an art form. They took the time to mix and try a range of mortar colors. With their help, we selected the one they advised. Now that the new mortar has completely dried, I can see it is a perfect color match. The pillar I was so nervous about? They elaborately jacked up and stabilized things, so they could remove the pillar, which they disassembled completely, laying out all the bricks (with all the old mortar removed), so they could put them back exactly as they were, only sturdy now, and good as new. Masonry repairs -- done well -- simply disappear when the work is done, right? As long as I own this house, my gratitude for this job-well-done will live on.
