All of the staff are knowledgeable, patient, helpful, and very friendly, from the mechanics, to the salespeople, to the manager! They were very patient in doing the little tweaks to get a rental bike set up just perfect for me - the bike was so comfortable that I ended up doing a 47 mile ride instead of the 25 mile route I had planned! We've been using 2nd Ave. for about a year now since moving to the area, and it's my favorite bike shop & my favorite ski shop I've ever used, anywhere. The shop itself is great - good hours, good selection, yada yada yad, but What sets 2nd Ave. apart is their incredible staff. They are always so friendly and helpful. We've use them for everything from rentals & demo rentals, to bike and ski maintenance, to picking up small stuff like gloves and bike pumps, to major equipment purchases, and it doesn't matter what we're doing, or who is helping us, they are always so friendly, so knowledgable, and so helpful, and they do it all without ever being condescending or elitist about it. The staff was very rude and I had to travel multiple time from 1hr away for them to tell me they couldn't mount my skis after dropping them off 4 days earlier. I was very friendly and tried to be polite but their arrogance toward me was enough for me never to return. Rented a bike on a visit to lovely Durango. Asked for something as simple and cheap as possible. Also asked for a lock and about safety in town and whether the cable lock they gave me was sufficient- assured it was. Fast forward and the bike - which we had to adjust in many ways as it was out of alignment and the gears needed attention- was stolen with the lock cut on a rack outside of a prominent hotel in town. This shop acted like they were doing me a favor by only charging me 500.00 for this bike, at least twice what it could possibly have been worth. Two cautions- use a real u-lock in town and rent from someplace else. read more

Had a pretty rough day - husband lost his wallet on a hike, luggage didn't make it, you name it. So we decided to get out and rent a bike to ride along the Animas. Rented from 2nd Ave Sports and hit the jackpot! They were so amazing - we didn't get there til late afternoon and they were on it! Got us fitted and gave us an amazing deal since we were only going to be able to use them for a couple hours. We will rent from them every time we come which is every year. So much for a local bikeshop! I went in to have my almost brand new bike serviced and was told wrongly that I needed all sorts of repairs. I'm a former bike mechanic so I know they were trying to scam me. I was quoted over $300 and was told my bike was un-ridable. Total BS! i was road trippin' out to CO to visit a buddy who lives in Durango, I knew I wanted to ride, and knew I didn't want to ride someone else's bike, so I threw mine up on the roof and headed out. Somewhere along the 11 hour drive my rear brake decided that it didn't want to be a part of the fun..I got the bike down in Durango, and the lever pulled all the way to the bar. I called these guys and explained the problem, they told me that they might be able to check it out, but that their service dept was super full so they probably wouldn't be able to get to it. I got to the shop once again explained the problem, and I think they could tell I just really needed to ride. They agreed to knock out the work, and in under an hour no less. Having run several shops, I understand what walk ins can be like, and want to express my thanks to these guys for getting my bike ready in time, and recommending some sick local trails to ride. They were right on the mark w/ both--the brake feels amazing, and the trails had me smiling ear to ear the entire time. I went over the the local liquor store to grab them some beers as a thank you, and the owner told me they really enjoyed anything from SKA brewing. So, if you're ever in Durango, and need an awesome shop to knock some emergency work out on your bike...go to 2nd Ave...also bring some SKA. Thanks again guys.. read more

I live in the Durango area and like to support local businesses and give them positive reviews when possible. I decided to take my business to 2nd Ave a couple of years ago when I needed to buy some late season cross country skis. I called 2nd avenue and the extremely helpful guy (possibly manager?) told me that they were highly motivated to move some old rental skis. We finalized details and I went into the store to purchase. Durango is a ridiculously friendly and customer-focused town and I was surprised when I was totally ignored by 4 different sales people for over 15 minutes. No one seemed busy but I finally resorted to asking someone for help and purchased the ski package. Because I was relatively unfamiliar with ski gear at the time, I was very naive about quality and fair pricing. One of the ski bindings was malfunctioning when I bought it and failed completely after limited use. The skis themselves have been a good match for me so I can't complain about those, but later I priced a brand new ski package of similar quality and realized I had been totally cheated. Never again! This store might be okay if you know your gear or have very deep pockets, but there are too many options for me to ever go back to 2nd Ave sports. read more

Great help from these guys trying to rent bikes to ride along the river. I rented three. They will tell you how to get the the amazing river trail. It's about four miles in each direction. It's new and spacious inside, and lots of high end bikes and other outdoor gear. One bike was selling for $6,500. The bikes for rental are in average condition only, but many of them to choose from. Way too much attitude at this place! Last week I parked in the parking lot at 2nd Ave., got out, and started walking in to purchase a new tube and tire. A young salesman rudely asked me if I was going to buy anything and if not, I had to leave. He wrongly presumed that I was poaching his parking lot. He turned used his middle finger to point to the "customers only" sign at lot. I said f*uck you and went to another shop to give them my business. And I'm a 20yr. Durango local. 10/10 do NOT recommend. me and my family have had great experiences with ski rentals and never had a problem so we know what skis are good quality and which are not. these are extremely poor. we had to rent somewhere else because the boots hurt our shins and one of the skis completely clipped off because it wasn't set to the right measurement. i do not recommend. spend the extra money for quality skis so you don't have a bad experience like us. read more

I was in town for some rides and without a hose at my rental. These guys let me use their hose out back for a quick clean-up, no charge. I came back the next day for a quick chain fix and upon hearing I was from out of town, Matt spent 15 minutes showing me his favorite rides without me even asking. I have rented bikes from the store and the service was decent. Today I spent $5600 on a new bike. My spouse told me I should expect them to spend some time making sure the bike was adjusted properly to fit me and my riding style. Did they? Heck no! They didn't even adjust the seat post to the proper height. Nor did anyone offer to help me load it into the car, which was rather awkward. I had asked about getting credit for the demo rentals, but that request was ignored. Really, I was astonished to get such poor service when spending that kind of money. I was quite sorry that the other bike shop I'd planned on buying from was out of stock. They know how to treat a customer right. read more

Came into town last week looking for some help on road riding routes in the area, this was the only shop that actually had a map I could use. Shortly after picking up a map, I went on a recommended road route out to Wildcat Canyon and ended up with a broken spoke. Returned to the shop and they were very helpful in getting it fixed, they even texted me midday to let me know my bike was ready for pickup. I'd definitely recommend these guys. I even asked a local cyclist of all the shops I should take my bike to he didn't hesitate to recommend this shop, and I'm glad I listened. read more

I was extremely disappointed with my customer service here this week. I walked in and only 3 other customers besides myself were in the store and I counted at least 5 employees. Nobody asked me if I needed help or even offered to be with me anytime soon. Waited ten minutes until I finally just asked around for help. I've spent thousands of dollars at this store and was taken care of on busy days previously but the cocky mechanics couldn't even help me or answer my questions when I decided to go ask for help. All I needed was replacement lenses for a 220 dollar pair of glasses that I bought here a year ago. Talked to 3 different employees until the one in the back agreed she would contact the company to order them. For some reason they needed to hold my glasses to order the lenses? I've worked in bike shops and ordering something online through qbc is not a two day ordeal. They said they'd call back in a few hours but two days later I haven't heard anything. I'll order the lenses myself even though I just wanted to give them my business. Don't think I would recommend this place to anyone if they want customer service or to feel like they are being taken care of in the slightest. after going back in to just buy a new pair of 220 dollar glasses, no body wanted to ask if I needed help again. I asked if they had the glasses I wanted and felt like I was asking them a favor just to answer my question . the guys answer was "I'm busy settings a bike right now" . I'll take my business elsewhere. Bike shops should be a fun place to hang but I felt they didn't want anything to do with me. As a local pro and flc cycling team member I was extremely disappointed and will just order online from now on. Go to velorution cycles, that guy made me feel welcome. read more

Came into town from Houston for spring break, and by the time we were ready to rent skis and boards for our family of 5, everything was gone at the resort and surrounding businesses. Happened to call 2nd ave sports at 5:30pm, and they told us they could possibly help us out, and that they would be staying open later than 6 anyways. We got there about 6, and were behind another family of 6 that was literally taking the shops last skis and boots. We waited over an hour to be seen, not expecting to be helped honestly. The staff searched and found some of us skis and boots-and for the ones that they didn't have rentals in stock, they literally grabbed brand new boots and skis from their sales inventory to accommodate us. They even custom cut poles for us when the remaining poles they had were too tall. They went over and above for us and we will be back in the future! read more

Just happened to walk in on the grand opening and got invited to drag race some bikes. Awesome event, awesome staff, and the new store looks amazing. Definitely a comfortable place to buy cycling gear. Some bike shops around here feel a little elitist, this shop makes you feel comfortable bringing in your $200 POS or if you just want to buy a cruiser. Also has the high end elite stuff though but they don't throw it in your face. Would definitely buy gear here as well as a new bike. read more

Regretfully, I have been a customer at Second Ave too many times. I was very excited to begin mountain biking and road biking, and was treated poorly on multiple occasions. The employees are incredibly rude, snobby, and inattentive. If you are new to the biking world and have questions, they won't give you the time of day. One time we went in to Second Ave on a Sunday, as Mountain Bike Specialists was closed, to ask about fraying road tires on a new bike. It took over twenty minutes before an employee would even talk to us, The employee was bothered we were even asking about it, and did nothing to help. We took the bike in to Mountain Bike Specialists the following day, where we had purchased the bike, and they replaced the tires for no charge. Too many bad experiences with Second Ave employees. Needless to say, we will not be going back. read more
