The class schedule is also very easy to follow. The daily class schedule for each level of students is different for every day of the week. However, this schedule is the same every week. Once you input the dates into your calendar you can put them on repeat and you'll never miss a beat. The belt testing here is also done well in my opinion. The testing dates are announced well in advance and I've also seen them posted throughout the Dojo. As long as the students attend, participate and learn the different blocks, punches, etc then they should pass their tests each time. My son has moved up to the next belt each time he has a belt test. The new location is really cool too! They now have two floors which allows them to accommodate more classes as well. I really am glad that my son attends Okinawan Karate Dojo! I'm lookong forward to him earning his black belt here one day.

The Master (surprisingly) was young, but after one trial class, my 7 year old daughter was hooked. She loved how Master Andrew made classes fun, entertaining, and filled with laughter, but also included times for serious learning accordingly. He understands if the kids are having a difficult time with certain forms, but continues to encourage them which helps give them that push to continue, rather than to quit. This dojo is also run by the most family-oriented family, whom (from what I've seen) all remembers each students and their families names. They are constantly sanitizing and keeping the place clean. Yes, even before covid hit. 4 years later, my daughter who started out as a no belt, holds a second degree black belt. Thank you to Master Andrew and Master Yang for having superb positive teaching values for the children.

My son struggles with paying attention in school, but here he loves "focusing" and learning new techniques. It's the right balance of challenge and accomplishment. The facility is nice enough, there is enough room for all the kids to spread out. Class sizes are around 12-15, which is perfect. Belt progression is not guaranteed, and belt testing is serious. Master Andrew trains his students to be competitive and many do participate in state and national competitions, but we're only white belt, so a ways to go still. If you're looking for a family-friendly, flexible, fun and competitive environment, this is the place.

Minimal breaks however go at your own pace. I attended the Box N Glow class so the lights were off and I feel like it took the pressure off of looking like a beginner or getting tired mid way through class. This event was to fundraiser and build awareness to the special Olympics Organization for Howard county. There were snacks, a mocktail and a two free raffle tickets to enter a for vouchers to a plethora of places from game night to spa days. It was an extremely well organized event with awesome staff. If I lived closer, I would join!

I had a short, but great experience here and would return…read more Bottom line: I found the facility and equipment to be great, the staff and other students to be very warm, personable, receptive but also firm in working and teaching us, and the actual training to be very valuable. Unfortunately, I had a serious underlying medical condition I wasn't aware of that started manifesting during training and I had to cut it short. Fortunately my doctors figured it out, I'm improving and starting to get active again, and hope to return someday soon. I had joined just on a month by month basis just to see what it's like. I have a very high pressure job and have absolutely no control over my day nor schedule, fly frequently, and to be frank many days I'm just very tired after a stressful long day at work.... so consistently and commitment are not my strong spots. I appreciated the opportunity to sign up on monthly without a longer term commitment, and don't mind at all paying for that convenience. I attended probably ten total sessions over the course of a few months, and here's what I found: - Great staff. From the young folks working the front desk to the trainers and to the folks that I assume were owners or management, everyone was personable, warm, and inviting. Don't let that fool you though - while the trainers were absolute accommodating of everyone's different skill and fitness levels and personal challenges, they made sure you got your money's worth and motivated and cheered, but also pushed, all in positive energy. - Great facility. There is a single very large room for the krav and kick boxing group sessions, then a smaller room of heavy backs, and then finally a large "crossfit" style room in the back. The large krav room is nicely padded, the boxing room had a lot of heavy bags, enough to accomodate a good sized group, and the crossift room had everything you would expect, like squat racks, ropes, boxes, balls, even pipes for warmups and stretches. IIRC they even have some protein for sale, which I appreciate. I believe they also sell new and used gear, so you can get boxing gloves there, and even buy like used kick shields and other gear they retire. - Great training all around. While this is primarily a Krav gym, they bring in other focal areas like boxing and workouts. The Krav sessions were a blast, learning general techniques like elbows, front and back kicks, etc. There were typically multiple trainers for each session. They session started with a warmup, typically some fast moving back and forth type of stuff, dynamic stretches etc. and then large group sessions where we paired up in twos or threes and went through the prescribed routines. This was always interesting because you never knew who you would get matched up with and there was a great age, gender and fitness diversity but everyone was very positive energy, friendly and supportive ... just some kicked a bit harder than the others :) The boxing sessions were smokers. This really opened up my eyes to just how much stamina is required in boxing; if you've never really intently thrown your hand at a large heavy bag before then you just don't realize how much it takes out of you. You need your own gloves, which you can get on your own or buy there. It's not a boxing gym, but I would call it like "boxing lite" - as an add-on to the krav sessions. There is no sparring ring for instance. I have never boxed before, and got a lot out of this training and enjoyed it a lot. The trainer to student ratio here was high as well since this is a smaller room which can't accommodate as many students as the main room. The general fitness sessions in the crossfit room were equally toasty, with some very fit men and women leading and attending the sessions. The diversity of training reminded me of my military days, with calistenics, weights, ropes, box jumping, etc. The warmups alone were kind of a full workout for me, and then they were followed by some pretty intense constant moving through a variety of exercises with the routines changing constantly. It was awesome using my entire body in such a variety of motions despite it being pretty tough for me. No one ever treated me dismissively; they simply let me catch my breath and then pushed me to continue on. Value for dollar here was extremely high for me. I do have a top plan at Columbia Association that I frequently use for myself and the family, but do have a gym dedicated to this type of training, complete with passionate trainers and a good student to trainer ration was really nice. Literally the only downsides I saw were that it's in a strip that has a tight parking lot, with not a ton of spaces available. I do wish there were more available on Sundays as my weekdays are just too challenging and unpredictable, but I still managed to make several sessions and have a great time.

My buddy did a trial in here because he and I had the same interest in checking out the gym where the former OneFC fighter, Kevin Chung would teach. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend, but my buddy attended here and was surprised at the guy's attitude. My buddy used to train at the gym (left there years ago but cross train every now and then) where Kevin got fired from (without pay or notice or something unfair like that). Then, when he tried to check out the gym, Kevin wouldn't even let him train at first, because my friend used to train at the place where he got fired from (he probably thought that he was a spy or something ridiculous). Kevin's own defense, according to my friend, was, "Hey, I know you. You train at that gym (where he got fired from) and under him (the previous gym owner), right? Well, you can't train here. I don't like him; he's a greedy, fake pastor and a business owner. You aren't allowed to cross train here." On top of this, Kevin would say stuff like, "You move well and you are very technical. You should come in again and I want you to fight one of our guys. He's a good size for you." I heard many positive things about Kevin, which was the main reason why we both had an interest in swinging by here. But, I didn't expect him to be this rude to anyone, especially someone as nice as my friend who would never go into someone else's gym to either spy or disrespect the very gym owner. After this initial visit (this was like a year or so ago), my buddy stopped going there because he didn't want to fight anyone in the gym, and when he told me this very incident, I wanted to share how you shouldn't judge the book by its cover. Kevin, from what I've heard (from my buddy and other friends) and seen (via IG and/or FB public posts), seem to be very technical and a decent coach. However, when it comes to his personality, you'll be super surprised how arrogant and egotistical this guy can be. The gym doesn't even offer full-MMA program (there's no grappling and there's no 'mma' team practice), and for him to behave like he's the best thing the world can offer makes you just wanna pray for apocalypse now. Yes, he's a decent coach, but at that point, it doesn't even matter how good your coaching skills are or how good your fighter resume is. It's truly unfortunate, but that type of mentality would only lead you to burn multiple bridges. I personally recommend The Old Boy to seriously start reading books, like "Ego is the Enemy," "The Obstacle is the Way," and "The Tribe." If you simply want to enjoy your martial arts journey, I highly recommend you to go somewhere else.

They play collaborative games, learn easy rote memorization skills, and practice focus/intention. In the beginner belt program, they learn different forms and practice them weekly. The instructors keep the children engaged and on-task and show them how to improve their techniques. Older children often support the beginner belts, which is a leadership quality that IMA values. My children have learned so much about tae kwon do, but more importantly, how to be better citizens of the world. They help out more at home, have a "black belt attitude" about challenges, and look forward to class each week. The cost is reasonable and the instructors are strict but kind. I am looking forward to enrolling my two youngest children soon to continue the tradition at IMA!
