Made this account just to leave this joke place a bad review. Went there about 2 months ago while visiting Maryland, and this place could not be more of a joke. Not only did they not allow me to open mat, they also have insane cancellation fees and prey on innocent people who just want to train. Quite frankly you would be better off training in an alleyway outside of a bar, because it would be more inclusive and less predatory, and at least then you probably wouldn't get robbed of 600$. read more

This gym is amazing and has changed my life. Everyone is so polite and welcoming from the front desk to the coaches. I mainly attend the jiujitsu classes and have felt a difference both in my body and my mindset. Each month the class focuses on a position and what can be done in that position. It is hard work but if you put in the hard work it is really rewarding. All of these bad reviews seem unwarranted because they focus on individuals who seemingly try to break contracts. Contracts exist for a reason. If you are even slightly interested I would highly recommend attending. They also have classes for children. When my little one is old enough I hope to enroll him as well. The other day I was watching the advanced adult jiujitsu class and there was a moment the children's class came into the same area to get water. All of the advanced class stopped and clapped for a kid who had gotten a new belt. An mma coach was also making small talk with all the kids and you could tell how encouraged the kids felt. If you are patient, like to work hard and are a consistent person, join. If you are not sure, try their free trial. If you are wishy washy (which is fine if that works for you) then this gym probably is not for you. I have seen people of all ages, shapes, sizes, and experience levels in this gym. A completely predatory business. I had to pick up a second job and couldn't attend classes because of it. They charged me $600 to cancel my membership. Yes, you read that correctly, $600 to NOT attend the gym. Furthermore, if you get "promoted", you need to buy more shirts from them of another color. If you don't wear it, you get bitched at. Currently training here at the Crazy88 Elkridge location. I do Muay Thai, BJJ, boxing, will start doing No-Gi BJJ this week, and hopefully wrestling soon too. Previously attended a different gym out in California but have learned faaaarr more in my time here than I did elsewhere. They have a variety of classes and are super beginner friendly. The coaches are all extremely knowledgeable and great teachers. The whole team is very nice and a pleasure to train with. And the gym gear is real nice too! Very good quality and look. This gym is the real deal. The team wins many competitions and the coaches work their students and motivate them to be their best whether it's at competitions or just hitting pads. I couldn't begin to express how pissed I am writing this. Before you sign a contract with these people I want everyone to know that cancellation is 599$. If you don't move 25 miles from a location of a gym they charge you 600 fuckin dollars. Im in the army and realized I didn't have time to drive 30 minutes from my house every day to go train and they decided the best course of action is to treat you as if your contract is a vehicle loan. My daughter found this spot over a year ago and she absolutely loves it here. She practices Muay Thai kickboxing and has developed a level of discipline that leaves me in awe. She has grown in the art and matured also as a result. This was an sport that she sought out on her own so she is ALL IN! The owners and staff here are really great people and have done a great job of promoting a familial atmosphere. You always feel welcome when you come here. These folks are complaining that they signed a contract with a business and when they didnt want to stay in that contract and the business collected their money on the contract, they got mad. Listen, you're adults. You should know that when you sign a contract, you're expected to uphold your end of the agreement. To knock a business for holding you to your word is ridiculous and you should be ashamed of yourself. Now, as for the business. We love it there. My son recently started BJJ and boxing classes there. He fell in love with it the moment he got onto the mat. The instructors and the teens in his class immediately embraced him as a member of the class and involved him right away. My experience there as a parent was great. We were brought in and given a few free classes for my son to check it out. I told them we had a few gyms in the areas lined up to check out and compare and we were encouraged by the staff to do exactly that. Never once were we given the hard-sell. Once my son and I decided this is where he would train, we went in, I READ THE CONTRACT and understood my responsibility in it, and agreed to sign up. Just in case my son lost interest, I signed him up for 3 months. Once that time is up, I'll sign him up for longer and get a free month out of it simply for paying in advance. The gym goers and the instructors make you feel like family there and their skills are top notch. If you decide you or your child wants to train, then I highly recommend Crazy 88. If you feel like you want to flake out on your responsibilities as a contract holder, maybe this place isnt for you. I wanted to go to a gym but didn't want to run on a treadmill for an hour. I wanted to be engaged in something interesting. I find this in material arts. Mix material arts work outs the entire body while learning partially self defense. Ok so Im reviewing this place as a parent who took their child to the youth classes only! I cannot speak to the other programs that they have their for adults. The space is really big inside and their are several areas for workouts. The youth classes are seperated in two areas, on either side of a wall. They have a new MMA cage, but the children never went in it. My daughter is 7 and she has been doing jui jitsu for almost two years now. When she came to stay with me for the summer, so I needed to find a school for her. This one was the closest to my home that offered a kids program. Ok so the way that they set it up is that there are multiple classes in the evening that they can go to, but only one class a day, two classes a week. The classes are all the same and they learned a few moves a month, culminating in the stripes/belt test at the end of the month. This is why I give it 2 stars. There is no actual live sparring with other kids to test their skills. They do partner up to train on individual techniques, but no full speed sparring, which is not something that I am used to with youth classes. Also, the instructors are too passive in instruction, what i mean is that they show a technique and have the kids try them out, but they are not consistant in enforcing proper technique all the time. Maybe Im being too harsh, I mean it is kids classes, but I am paying good money for quality instruction. Dont get me wrong the instructors are top notch jui jitsu practioners, with solid resumes, but they lack a lot of coaching and instructor ability, namely towards kids. What bothered me was how they do business. It was very secretive in how they charge you and what you will pay. They take you in to a back room and it is kind of like buying a car and then they take you to the finance person who shows you are the sparkly warranty services and what not. They do give you free 30 days to see if you want to come back, as well as a free gi, so thats nice, but the gi is crap. Needless to say we didnt use that one. If you are looking to put your kids in a great all raound school, this one might not be it. With limited selection in this area, you may have no choice, so I guess take the good with the bad. read more

Let me start by saying that I decided to let my Son try this place out because of the reviews, but what a total mistake on my part by stepping foot in this place. A seven-day trial period converted into a vicious two-year contract that I am currently being bullied into paying. My Son only attended three times during the trial period but was no longer a trial once the contract was signed, and now they're asking me to pay $600. I tried talking to the manager, Lindsey, and she was vulgar and nasty. As I do understand that I signed a contract, but if after three days it's a scheduling conflict for me, as I was told after signing they're not open for classes on Saturdays and my Son not wanting to attend anymore, they should at least work some agreement out with their customers knowing that kids are fickle. We, as single parents, have to keep up with our children's wants and schedules and put in extensive hours at work to keep up with survival demands. Even if I had to pay a pro-rate for how long my Son stayed, I would have been more than welcome to accommodate. However, the response was crass, rude, and simply disrespectful. A contract shouldn't be asked to be signed until after seven days. To the parents who are considering enrolling their children at this institution, make sure you keep an alert on your phone about the seven-day trial period because if your child does not want to continue enrollment and you forget to speak to someone about it because you are working to provide, there will be no mercy nor forgiveness for you here. read more

Please, save yourself a headache and money by not signing a contract with this gym. I will say that the facility is top-notch and the instructors are awesome, don't be fooled. Their contract fees are high. For an entry level person you can only attend class 10 days a month, and if you want to attend class more often than that you have to pay a higher gym fee which is outrageously expensive. Because it was no longer congruent with my schedule, I decided to cancel my membership. Of course, I expected that I would have to pay a cancellation fee. The people who are on staff are not great at explaining how their system works, and were very vague about the process. I was charged late fees that I should have never been charged, and didn't hear from Crazy 88 for six months pending my cancellation process. When I finally did I was contacted not by the gym, but BY THEIR LAWYER. Of all things, that was the last thing I thought would happen. Unbeknownst to me, I was being charged interest during these six months without being contacted. I'm a student, and don't have a whole lot of money as it is, and the bill from Crazy 88 cut my savings account in half. Over $1,700.00 for probably two months of classes. Quick review from someone who just left their Muay Thai program with 1 fight under his belt! A little background, I've trained for 10 years plus in a variety of martial arts etc., so I have a pretty decent idea what to expect going into a gym (just to give some context to the review). Facilities: Hard to beat, very large, lots of space, never cramped. Overall great. Only problem is that the owner does not buy enough training equipment for the Muay Thai classes. It's rare to get a set of pads during training that fit and are not falling apart at the seams or painful to hold. Spend some money on these! We need them!! Coaching: Hit or miss, the coaches are all great guys, and solid fighters, but the problem is that they are young fighters making rent money coaching. Not trained coaches, and in my opinion, have not been in training with skilled coaches long enough to effectively coach others. Not a lot of structure or progression to be had in the coaching. Little to no conditioning, expect to do it on your own time. Also a lack of constructive feedback on a daily basis. You generally spar every single day, but generally there is little to no feedback on performance while doing so. One thing that rubbed me wrong before I left was an insistence on weekly full contact sparring for the fighters, hard to see how this would NOT result in someone getting hurt. "The Crew": Awesome set of guys, a good number of whom are competing actively so are very driven and in great shape. Very friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Management: Not so good. Customers are expected to sign 6 or 12 month contracts at (in my own opinion) huge fees. Expect around $200.00 per month. And if something happens where you can no longer, or no longer want to train, you have to either get a doctor's note, leave the state, or pay $600.00 to quit. I hurt my back training and was couch bound for close to a week with spasms. They insisted I had to get a doctor's note to "prove" that I was really hurt. I found this practice very disrespectful as I'm a full grown adult who can tell for himself when something is dangerous. No gym I've ever been to before has had such a policy. Culture: A little bit cultish... There is a ton of pressure to be there every single day and forgo other activities. My final interactions were far from pleasant, after jumping through some hoops to "prove" that I was not lying about being hurt, it was a rather cold parting of ways, no good luck, no "how's your injury". Really bad last impression. It's all smiles at the front end, but once you want to leave things change quickly. Overall Suggestion: MUAY THAI ONLY: If you are a less experience person looking for a good workout and not planning to fight and have lots of money to spend, it's a decent choice. Just be sure you are ready to do this for a year, because once you sign the line you are in. However, if you are planning to train and fight competitively I'd look elsewhere. Their hearts are in the right place, but their coaches are just not experienced or involved enough to maximize people. Also, they do not have a great handle on progressive training, skill building, or injury prevention. Great place to train brazilian jiu jitsu, muay thai, or MMA. The staff are friendly and professional. The mats are cleaned daily which unfortunately isn't a standard across all MMA gyms. A large majority of the clientele are super friendly and always willing to show you a couple pointers or help out as needed. Definitely a team and learning conducive environment. Crazy 88 started out fine I put my children in it and they enjoyed it, until I realized I wasn't getting what I was paying $398 a month for. My children wanted to do kick boxing and they started in grappling, when I inquired about kick boxing after 7 months. I was told that they had to be invited to the class. When ask how do you get invited to the class I never got answer, just a crooked smile and a change of subject. So shortly after I took the kids out and never went back. 2 months later I got something in the mail for a judgement and a restrainting order!??? And a lawyer demanding over $3000 for breach of contract, even though my children were there for almost 8 months. I was initially told that there was no contract and we could stop at anytime. Just be careful about signing up. I heard the owner talking to someone that took the free class and decided not to join and she started using pressure tactics to get him to join by asking what he though was a good price to pay. Not a place to start bjj. Their beginner training is a joke and an obvious money making scheme. No fundamentals are taught. The first thing I was taught was the rear naked choke, then we sparred. Any idea how difficult it is to get yourself into position to actually apply the rear naked choke? It's essentially impossible if you haven't been taught how to do it. It's a waste of time it is to teach someone a rear naked choke hold, then have them spar with an opponent. They spent zero effort in teach you on how to position yourself and controlling your opponent to get into positions you want to be in. They start from the assumption you all ready know how to do that. And they have no desire to teach you how to do these things. No one ever taught me how or where to grab an opponent when standing up. No one ever taught me how to take someone down after grabbing them. No one ever taught me how to control an opponent, after take down, to get in position to apply any of the techniques taught. No one taught me how to defend against these moves. Sparring with someone in the same position teaches you nothing, as you're just screwing around on the mat. Sparring with someone who knows what they're doing only reminds you of the terrible teaching methods of this place. I now know how to do a few things, if I magically find myself in a position to apply those techniques. If you have some knowledge on what to do, this place will definitely take you to the next level. If you're already a blue belt or an experience white belt, go to this place. This is not a place for beginners. read more

I decided to write a review after receiving an almost $3000 bill for not completing my membership and the blatant false advertisement. When we went for the 30 day advertised trial, I was informed that I would have 3 days to make a decision to join. I went on the fourth day and indicated that I was having second thoughts, but was informed that the contract was already in effect and to give it a try. I did not realize that I was locked into the contract for 12 months until I received a copy when it was mailed to my home. That was my fault because I have never joined a gym before and did not know the process. We continued to attend the classes until we were no longer able. I ended the membership, but still owed a balance. I now have a court date to pay the remainder. I just feel I was duped and misled and I hope no one else goes through the same. read more

To the owner of this school, I tried contacting you but It is apparent that is hard to reach you. Your attorney and I came to an agreement today. I am not angry but I am disappointed in this school. I started ju jitsu as an alternative in helping with my depression. My original teacher recognized this in me and although he is a black belt, he developed me into a strong individual. He taught me how to be one with myself and instill confidence in myself. Yes, money is important but it was obvious that crazy 88 cares more about money than pupils. Since I posted my first review alot has happened. I lost my father and mother back to back. I am a single mother of 7, 1 of which is my nephew but I raise him. I had my children attending the classes at Crazy 888 but once I lost m parents alot of things fell out of place. At this point my payments were current with crazy 888 and we had to stop attending because my mother was my baby sitter so I had no one to watch my children while I was working which means I had no money coming in which I didnt really sweat it because I was current. However now they have took me to court and it suing me for over $2000. for classes my children didnt even attend. This is a place I was trying to bring my children back to because the teachers made it awesome but I am really upset that they are suing me for services I didn't even get. There wasn't even an option of picking payments back up when we started back considering I was current when lie turned upside down for my family. As stated before the teachers are excellent but the fact that I'm paying for services that I wasn't even able to receive is crazy. Nobody knows when something is going to turn bad in there lives crazy 888 took advantage of my situation. I feel as tho i didn't use their service and was current up to the date that my children stopped I should not owe them a penny.
