I lost my dad 7 years ago but as I was standing on the pier I could hear him yelling at me as if I were purposely catching puffer fish that he had to fight off the hook. Yes, I admit to getting teary eyed with nostalgia. It is a really cute beach with a nice jetty. The pier is great for high tide fishing and low tide viewing. The water is super clear with no snags or rocks to catch your line.

It sits at the opposite end from the free "first" beach and in between is what we always called the "swing" beach for obvious reason. This beach sits next to the Smugglers Beach motel which I think was changed to condos many years ago. The beach has a large boat ramp for launching boats and the ramp used to be free but now the town charges to launch. The beach itself also charges to park. Overall the largest beach and it sits at the mouth of Bass River and has a pier to fish from.

During the overhaul issues were found in the console with strength of the steering mount and in the fuel tank sender and pickup. They added an aluminum plate to help the steering and got the fuel system working well. Boat runs like a new boat, turn key and go. The boat was designed for a 2 smoke and the added 100lb weight of a 4 stroke caused some on the mooring problems with deck drainage. Marty suggested we replace the bilge hatch with a more waterproof one and put a little ballast in the front of the boat and that worked fine. Marty showed me a boat at the dock that was just delivered and asked how much I thought it cost. I guessed 800k and he said 1.4 million. I think the repower work on little 17 footers may be a charity for us regular folks.

Judson went above and beyond to ensure that we would have a great day - explaining the maps of the area, and talking to us over the phone when we needed some help dropping the anchor. We come to the Cape every summer and will definitely be returning to Ship Shops next year to do it again!

Call me old fashioned but I like to be treated with kindness and respect when I come in to a local business but you will not get that here if the owner is working (you will however experience great customer service if you interact with an employee other than the owner). As a personal note, I take no joy whatsoever in writing this review but I did so because I feel I need to share my experiences so that anybody who may read this review knows what they are up against when they walk in the door. The owner(?) was very friendly and helpful to our kids who were only interested in crabbing (not exactly a bit profit opportunity for the proprietor of a shop that sells offshore fishing gear). He took a lot of time with us, and directed us to a couple good spots to try. He also gave them each a lure which they were both really excited about (sometimes it is the littlest things). Showed us a lot of pictures of local catches and, in the event we decided to actually fish, had a recommendation for a local guide. Hopefully we'll see more reviews, and I hope others will have the same positive experience we had.

Captain Sam was very knowledgeable and showed us various landmarks throughout. The boat was amazing - everything looked brand new and there were various areas of the boat for us to hang out in. In particular I loved the fly bridge which had incredible views of the sunset and water. Captain Sam was awesome and played great tunes. I will definitely be booking again in the future for my next girls trip or for a special night with the family. The perfect cape experience!
