This place has a festive, brightly colored decor and uniquely painted chairs. It's well lit, but not too bright like a cafeteria. In general it has a clean, comfortable ambiance. My wife went here with friends and liked it so much she wanted me to see what it was like. We went for dinner and I had a ground beef burrito. In general it was good, but what made it especially good was the tomato sauce it was bathed in. The sauce tasted like the tomatoes were roasted. It was wonderful. Service was especially good because we had two servers. One was a young man who is the son of one of the cooks. He likes to come to the restaurant and help out. So he'd visit our table regularly asking if we needed anything. His attentiveness earned him a separate tip. All in all it's a fine place for dining on your favorite Mexican food. read more

With my coworkers last day approaching quickly, our small team decided to take her out to a farewell lunch before sending her on her way. Tres Portillo's was the place of choice (mainly because my older coworker frequents there and loves it) so we headed out around 11AM for a much needed lunch out. Although small, the space boasts plenty of socially distanced seating at tables or booths and is brightly splashed in color which creates a friendly and welcoming environment. Traditional Hispanic music blasted from the speakers, which was a little awkward considering the volume, but made the experience feel authentic none the less. It's definitely a local's hang out, and reservations are rarely needed, so our party of 7 was easily accommodated during the lunch rush. We were greeted by a woman who quickly seated us, took our drink orders and was back within the minutes to take our order - which none of us were ready for considering we had just sat down. After a few minutes, she returned to take our order, refilling our waters and unlimited chips and salsa in the process. She wasn't all that friendly and frankly seemed annoyed to have the entire dining room to tend to herself, but managed to do so with ease. The menu boasts just about anything you could want - with breakfast served until 2PM. So while others opted for fresh burritos, tacos, smothered breakfast burritos, and a variety of apps, I opted for a simple bowl of tortilla soup in homemade broth to warm my bones. The size of the soup was large, filled with shredded chicken, rice, beans, sliced avocado and garnished with chips, which totally hit the spot. I also ordered a side of rice and beans which was HUGE and yet, delicious. I found the chips in my soup to be a little interesting, considering it took up the majority of the bowl and became soggy instantly, but it surprisingly tasted pretty decent. I am not understanding the negative/poor reviews on this business. In the contrary, I truly enjoy this restaurant being nearby and the great service provided. The business is clean, and the staff is polite. I normally come on weekdays and this business is not given the love it deserves. As you walk into the welcoming lobby, you're sat in the main dining which has booths on the side, tables in the middle, and a small bar. The authenticity is perfect and I love the atmosphere. I have had a myriad of food options, drinks, and dessert. All of my choices have been delicious. The chips and salsa are delicious. The chili relleno is good! I highly recommend the quesabirria tacos, which are my favorite and can be hard to find. In short, I recommend this restaurant and it needs more love from the local clientele. read more

Food here was good! They start you off with chips, salsa, and some refried bean dip. I enjoyed my enchilada and taco. Next time I'll ask for more salsa or hot sauce to go with it. I'm in town visiting, craving some good Mexican Food, and was very happy with this place. I was there around noon on a Friday (today actually). I felt I should take the time to post, because of the previous reviews. I ordered the chicken enchiladas Suizas my regular go to. Warm fresh chips, decent salsa, and water came out immediately, my order was taken, I was in and out within 30 min. The chicken tasted very fresh, and perfectly shredded. The green sauce, beans, rice, sour cream, all delicious . With all this being said, I was the only one in the place, and there was a sign to hire help. I'll go back next time I'm in town. I got a ground beef burrito drenched in "queso." The queso was actually pretty much nacho cheese sauce. This tasted like a Taco Bell soft shelled taco drenched in nacho cheese sauce. The service was quick and you get free chips and salsa. read more

We had called to see if we could have a party of 10 at 7:30 tonight. We were told yes, no problem. I hate leaving bad reviews because I know everyone has an off day, me included But, we did not feel welcome from the moment we came in. We were seated right away along with chips and salsa. It took another 20 minutes to get offered anything to drink (2 other tables and 2 people at bar total). They made it very clear we really weren't welcome. My Taco Salad was a cold stale shell with probably 2tablespoons of lettuce and a chopped up chicken leg a tablespoon of sour cream and guacamole. Margaritas are not as advertised either. I'm pretty sure my Puerto was orange juice with 1/2 shot of bar rail tequila, did not have grand marnier(but we paid for it)! Awful awful awful! They honestly could care less and how sad! I was in there about 2 months ago and served a plate that contained a baby cockroach in the rice. At the time, I thought it was a weevil, and when I showed it to my waitress, she had basically no reaction. After I got home and looked it up online, I learned it was a cockroach. I called the Jeffco Health Dept and they said they would send someone out, but they didn't want to see the picture I took (weird). All I'm gonna say is, it was a BABY cockroach, so what does that suggest about what's going on in the kitchen. read more

Being from San Francisco, it's a basic reality that mediocre, in-authentic food will kill a Mexican restaurant in a heartbeat. Expectations are high and 90% of the time they're met. Having been in the Denver area a little over a month, I'm starting to conclude that people have low expectations for Mexican food and therefore they well under-deliver. Is it racial I wonder? Maybe everyone here insists Mexican food should be chain-like where authentic taste is only a myth. Don't lynch me rednecks! This is a neighborhood restaurant with the appearance it's family run. I suppose so. But everytime I've passed it in the strip mall near a busy, busy supermarket, it looks empty. Never a good sign. On my occasion, I stepped in and was instantly greeted by a friendly and eager staff. Service was excellent, warm, friendly and attentive, just like one would expect. For my first time, I ordered a baseline entree: a combo plate with cheese enchiladas, rice and beans. El Basico, largely due to my skepticism about Colorado Mexican food of recent, past experiences. In sum, to my disappointment (food-wise): -- the sauce tasted like an equal share of tomato sauce and thickener, with a sprinkling of chile and spices. Quite bland and a big knock since sauce is king in traditional, family Mexican food -- spartan amount of cheese sprinkled over, just enough for "color" not taste -- literally two spoonfuls of rice and two spoonfuls of beans -- cole slaw. If it had a sprinkling of oregano, I would have understood. Otherwise, traditional American cole slaw and enchiladas is a stretch. Thankfully, that was only one spoonful -- Still can't (upon writing) remember if anything was truly fresh. Freshness is a hallmark of Mexican cuisine, FYI. Pluses (food-wise): -- plate was warm -- chips were freshly made, warm and crispy -- salsa was tasty (even if out of a jug) Upon leaving, I said thanks and mentioned I was new to the neighborhood. That registered no response. Not how I would run a place that probably caters to a square one or two mile densely populated customer radius. Hello management? You have a captive customer who's only choice is chain crap or you? Missed opportunity.... I hope someone will guide me to real Mexican food, not Colorado-Mexican food.
