Cons: My drive recovery cost $800 because it was an 8TB RAID drive so the $300, $400 or $500 they talk about on Yelp is misleading. There was only 4TB of my data on the drive but they charge by the entire drive space. Recovery took a week. Pros: 1. They did recover almost all of my data. 2. They were really communicative and transparent after I was quoted so I knew I was going to pay a ridiculous amount and approved it instead of just getting a bill at pickup. Moral of the story: Get a $200 drive and back your data up so you don't get bilked by data recovery services. read more

Their process is very clearly laid out, their fees reasonable and fully explained/broken down at each step. I had a great experience with these guys. I had a drive go down at the end of 2015, but there was nothing crucial on it, so I let it sit nicely in a box until two days ago, when I finally took it in to $300DR. Within 72 hours, I've got all my data back. Now, I know my drive wasn't that badly damaged to begin with (I learned through the repair that the partition had been corrupted and there were some bad sectors). When it went down, it wasn't making any bad noises or anything, it just wouldn't mount. So I figured there was probably not much, if any, physical damage. If I had suspected there was, perhaps I would have gone with a more intensive service. It's also worth noting that the data on the drive wasn't totally crucial to me (those memes I downloaded in 2006 WERE pretty funny, though), but I did want it back. $300DDR delivered in spades. I'm ecstatic to have all the dumb crap that was on the drive to begin with back in my life. EDIT: Seems like I wrote this review in 2017 and never posted it. The first place gave me a price range of $700 to $3,900 dollars for my 2 Terabyte external drive with the caveat that "most likely the cost would be in the upper half of the range." I wasn't thrilled at the prospect of spending upwards of $2,300 to recover my data. I am glad I found $300 Data Recovery, I went online and followed their very easy but detailed series of questions about my drive. My estimate ended up being $500 since my drive had encryption on it. I dropped the drive off at their location and they did a great job keeping me up to date on the progress. They emailed me a link to double check that the files they would recover were correct, I paid online and picked up the recovered data five days after dropping it off. Had a portable HD die on me. Had 1.4TB of pictures from years of archives. Wife was freaking out, but found $300 dollar from a referral. Was trying to decide between a local shop and shipping to $300 dollar. Based on their website, excellent reviews and pre-ship communications, decided to send it to them. They received the drive on July 31st and we got the replacement drive back on Aug 9th. We sent them a new drive to back-up the date. They sent the damaged drive back as well. I have had two hard drive failures with the dreaded dead screeching sounds and I thought crap my drives must have been toasted. Luckily these guys retrieved all the files for me and I couldn't have thanked them enough. I paid $400 both times. You know that amount during the drop off so it's not a shock. Be sure to bring a new drive over to them so in the case of recovery you have a new drive to copy files over to. Long story short, I shared my recovery specs, all of the data on the drive adds up to 251GB files inside !Problem folder adds up to 215GB therefore, they were able to only recover 36GB of my data "entirely". I don't count data they were able to recover partially because I don't know if I can view them or not. I sent in my drive, and they said if they can't recover 99% or more I will be able to decide whether to go with their service or not without a fee. They kept my drive for days for recovery, and then said they could recover 96% of the data and sent me the list. !Problem folder had all partially recovered files that may or may not open. Based on their report, whole drive had about 250GB data and !Problem folder had 230GB data, so I am entirely confused how they said they could recover 96% of the data at this point? They required me to pay them $115 for me to get my drive back even though they didn't provide 99% recovery. Based on my experience, I don't recommend them. Edit: Owner claimed I didn't read their claim, that's wrong, at least in the common sense we all understand the terms, I read them. To the owner of the company: If you tell me you recovered my 96% of files, that means you entirely recovered all of those files. I don't expect you to include in that percentage files that you recovered "partially" that may or may not work. You recovered 96% means you recovered them entirely. 96% recovered data this is quote from them " To clarify, we cloned sectors that build up 96.14% of all files on the hard drive." You being able to close 96% of the sectors doesn't mean I have 96% of my data. You guys entirely taking advantage over people. Let me make it for everyone to understand. Lets say you have a image called "abc.jpg". This image file's some data may be in that remaining 4% of the unrecovered area, and if that's the case, you can't view that image (at least all of the image). Edit2: I viewed all files and folders in !Problem folder, there are not very big files, there are bunch of small files. So I am not entirely shocked they are lying on this as well... Last but not least, for anyone doubting he said she said situation, when you read company's response, do you see their tone of voice? They are attacking instead of trying to make an unhappy client happy with their service. I work at retail for last over 10 years, all these years I heard over and over, client is always right. Here their rules are right, thats why they have pages and pages of them, to say they have 1% of your files and rob you 100 bucks because you don't want them to recover your data. I can't say enough amazing things about this company. About a year ago, my 4 year old son threw the network attached external hard drive that I used to back up our family photos. The drive was not making any noise which is always a bad sign. I could see the drive controller attach but it wouldn't even see the disk inside. Despite all of the warnings (and I would warn you now to not do anything I say in this paragraph), I opened the cover and found the head crashed and I was able to release it. At least now it was spinning, however, it still didn't mount the drive. I bought a similar drive online to swap the controller and that still didn't work. This was the absolute worst kind of hard drive failure at this point. The head had physically crashed and the cover was opened. After seeing ads online, I opened a ticket and sent the drive in about a month ago. Despite the severity and with the holidays and COVID and post office delays, I got the hard drive back in about 3 weeks. There were a few extra charges related to having to buy a replacement hard drive head but my total was still about $400. I received an email communication from them roughly every other day throughout the process and all extra charges were approved by me. I had resigned myself to the loss of the contents of the hard drive after all this time. My wife's grandfather died of COVID on Thursday and the funeral is on Tuesday. We were searching old physical photo albums and Photo CDs for pictures when the mailman arrived this morning with a hard drive with 99.4% of the files recovered. Look... I am that guy... the idiot who didn't back up. The idiot who has spent almost ten damn years recording a metal record that has been postponed due to my own busy life owning a business. I have been working on this record over 2 machines in my lifetime... an old windows tower, and then a fully pimped out 2016 iMac with a fusion drive. I know... computers fail.. but in my life, i only see laptops fail. My desktop computers don't move. What could do wrong? Well, my computer started showing its age... mostly I thought because my studio peeps updated it to the latest MacOS against my will (a no no in recording studios). Well, I have in and bought an M2 mac mini and the next day I go to my studio and hey... computer wont boot anymore. So I take it to a mac store in burbank that shares a name with a popular hollywood street called Melrose. They did a great job fixing the computer but the drive was dead. I waited 3 some weeks to hear back from their data recovery person who ultimately couldn't fix it. They recommended another business called Drive Savers. I sent it to Drive Savers without another thought, as the price "range" worked for me and if they were the best, then thats what I needed to get my precious data back. They got it the next day and mere hours later they called me with an update... they can't promise all my data back, but they can get a lot of it for a cool $3700. This was more than 3x more than my mental "this is what it would be worth for me to get my data back" limit. I politely asked them to return it... I'd re-record it all and keep the drive safe in a drawer until I needed it. But! First I decided to do some research... turns out there's a place local to me thats well reviewed called $300 Data Recovery... well okay... name sounds too good to be true, and I think if you're in my position and probably most others, it is too good to be true (but excellent marketing). Kinda wish I knew about this before sending it even to melrose. I fill out their survey and pay the extra $50 to have it expedited. I drop it off on Monday afternoon and I have updates the same and next day and day after that. I'm told my hard drive has a slow 2nd head and the 2nd platter is likely damaged. On Thursday evening my drive was ready. I got it Friday morning (today). Pretty much all of my data was saved. 99.907% of data they could see was saved. Okay, that works for me. Costed a cool $1100 with all the fees and things their name only subtly implies. First, it is $300 per drive, so if you have a fusion drive, thats 2 drives, so double the price. Then a surcharge for drives bigger than 2TB (even if you used less than 2TB, as I did). Then rush fees, then maybe something else. I don't know. Point is I don't really care because the value is in their craftsmanship and they clearly know what they're doing. They saved my work and sent me a directory listing of what was available and I just couldn't be happier that they saved my life on this one. Thank you $300 Data Recovery. I called around and there are other data recovery services out there, that quote you $800 - $3000, and that's if they find your data.   It's a racket, since these companies have your hard drive and since they can dictate what they charge, and hold your data for ransom. They will claim that costs are associated with the difficulty of the recovery...I smelled bullshEt when I started to get the same type of pitch from different companies. Gave them my old hard drive with college photos to recover. I told them straight away that the preamp was fried and it required a head swap. I gave a donor drive. Not recommended! When I first ask for a Chances form , they said that they had fixed this hard disk model for 800 times, successful recoveries 96% of customer's data. Then I took my hard disk to their shop, they asked me to pay $160 for a donor drive. Finally, they told me the bad news! Only 2% data can be recovered! What ? They told me that 98% can be recovered, so I agree to let them fix it, and now only 2% , what a big difference! And had me to pay other $100 labor fee??? read more

In a sea of snakes, $300. Data Recovery gets your data back from your failed drive at a comparatively reasonable price. In sum: this is how the "data recovery game" works: most all of these guys are more crooked than a barrel of snakes and will extract as much as they can out of you once they have your drive. Some will quote a very low initial price and then once they have your drive will quote something like three hours of work at average $300. per hour - others like SERT (see my one star review of them) will quote you around a thousand right from the getgo - in sum, most of these guys try to get the magic figure of around $1000. from you. If you can, as I did, find a place with great reviews and a flat fee that is reasonable, go for it. Yes, data recovery is not cheap, yes it will cost you a few hundred dollars, but no, there is no reason to pay more than that, not even for "chip off" USB drive recovery, it still should not cost more than a few hundred dollars. Do not pay more than a few hundred regardless, hold your ground, and you won't go wrong. Thankfully, $300. Data Recovery doesn't try to gouge you. They charge a flat $300. (plus $100. if device is encrypted) to get your data back. If your device is a USB flash drive, such as mine was, and the more advanced "chip off" recovery is needed where they must actually remove the chip and get the data using an external device, still I understand that they charge only $300. as long as the flash drive has only one chip, which most, even the larger flash drives, still have only one chip. In my case, chip off recovery was not needed. I mailed in my flash drive and it was returned to me and received in my hands with 100% of the data moved over to the new flash drive I provided (full data recovery), exactly 13 days after the date my drive was received by them. Along the way they sent me regular email updates, and were available by telephone for any questions. For this service, I give $300. Data Recovery four stars - I still have to deduct one star because although, as mentioned, among a sea of price gougers looking to get a grand out of you, this outfit is comparatively reasonable, but still given what other techs charge for computer repair where they have to put in a lot more time and install parts, even $300. - $400. for what they did is high. But, I suppose they have to charge that much to stay afloat because probably not so many people need their services, and they need to charge a lot to the few who do fall into this sticky web. Listen people - please always keep backups of your hard drives and especially - flash drives. Use Apple Time Machine or the equivalent. This is the second time a USB flash drive has failed on me. SHOUTOUT TO 300 DATA RECOVERY! I've been dealing with my hard drive issue for over a month. I'm from Long Beach, and I immediately took my drive to my local shop, but unfortunately, do to COVID, they didn't have the proper parts for it in stock and would have to ship parts from elsewhere. He recommended I go to these guys, and of course I was so worried because I had my entire life of content on this broken drive. Price is as they say on the website. The extra cost depends on the market price of a donor part. For me, i attempted to fix my wd green drive that had a burnt pcb. It turned out more of a problem inside the hdd. I did not have the right tools and the content of the Hard drive was very important. I chosed $300 because they have been in business for a long time, that would mean they had alot of experience. Up front on the quote they will tell you how many times they had worked on the same model as the drive you want to recover. This was a plus and gave me confidence of the fact they have previous knowledge of all the quirks of the hard drive. During that period, I had a lot of occasion to realize the importance of recovering the information that I had accumulated on this drive over many years.
