I'll admit, Advanced Holistic Health doesn't look like much from outside, but the interior was very nice. Not pretentious or super-upscale. This is the every-person's massage place. There's even a vinyl record player in the waiting room to ensure a jazzy waiting experience. They have several dedicated massage rooms and a large yoga area as well. The massage room was a nice size, not claustrophobic like some salons tend to be. The room temperature was a little cooler than I'd like, but the massage bed did have a heating pad that helped, and of course I was covered most of the time. Ashley performed my massage. She did a great job and understood exactly what I wanted and focused on those areas the most. She was totally understanding when I said I wasn't a talker! I'm all about falling asleep on the table. A Swedish massage is lot of rubbing, versus deep-kneading, but it was really calming. She identified some problem areas in my shoulder and gave advice on how to avoid them in the future. They offer monthly subscriptions for only $39/month for a Swedish massage. I'm thinking about signing up! I enjoyed my massage and would definitely recommend them to anyone.

Sam is always encouraging and she, the instructors and the other participants don't judge you if you are struggling to do a pose (or if you have terrible balance like me and fall all over the place). Every Slow Flow class I've been to is completely different than any other and each one of them is challenging in a different way. I've been to several of these classes with different instructors and they are all amazing and positive people. The Sculpt class is good too; the time doesn't always work for me, but whenever I've attended, it is a great energizing workout and Victoria is a great motivator. I am really glad to have this studio so close to my neighbourhood and to have met such great people there. I like that Sam has offered Beginner Yoga Classes which are especially great for people new to yoga and are intimidated, Sampler Classes (3 different classes in a 90 minute session) and is having a Friday Night Friends night, because I can try out other classes and also bring some friends so they can try it out. I went on a Monday, and they're mostly closed on Mondays, seems like one person is working at a time. So when I got there the building was all locked up and lights off. That threw me off. But a bit after I got there, Kim let me in. Kim was very thorough with the massage. She found sore spot and tension I didn't even realize I had. Overall, I'd say it was a good mix of relaxing and also helpful treatment for specific areas that needed attention. Afterward, she even gave me a few tips.

This studio is beautifully simple in a zen aesthetic sense (no small talk, no flashy mirrors,…read moredecorations or music). Yoga here may be more physically intense (ie relatively more physically intense of a work out than many people might expect from an "average yoga class" (whatever that is)). It's hard to describe the "all levels" class's intensity level: it's kinda like a vinyasa flow class plus not short but medium length holds of some of the more active (and weight bearing) poses. I personally end up taking at least a few passes on some of the more challenging poses and take a few child's pose/sitting breaks for the first 2-3 classes whenever I visit this studio for the first time in many months(I live a few hours away and can only visit.) I personally like the physical challenge and rigor / I find the physical exertion part (like a long run) helps focus me on my body and live in the the present moment/ be present in my yoga breath (rather than live in all the random thoughts in my head about the past or the future). I would recommend trying a few classes to see if this studio's style and pace might also be for you. Chuck is the main teacher and owner. He is kind and deeply committed to living the values of yoga, in and out of the studio. The studio has massage treatment rooms. There are 2 female massage therapists. I did learn that they have opened a sister studio right by me in West Dearborn on Mich Ave, but I have not been to this location yet. I have tried both Yoga basics and Candelight Yin classes, and will continue to try classes as they have so many different styles - and so many instructors from all over that come to teach, in addition to the regular instructors that teach here. I will be a regular at Yoga Shala, as I incorporate Yoga into my daily routine and will try to visit the studio 2x a week. My happy place....
