Very nice barber, but he said he could not cut my hair because it is too long (it does not even reach my back collar!). Seems like he primarily does buzz cuts with an electric shaver rather than scissors cuts. A shame because the price would have been great. read more

So this is the strangest 5stars I've ever given. The Barber couldn't take me, we were talking about what time to come back and we realized that he does not trim beards:- so he recommended a nearby place that specializes. That's a properly run small business and the least I could do is give him five stars. read more

A downtown institution. Been coming here for years and getting my hair clipped by Jan...in fact, I don't refer to it as getting a haircut...rather, I refer to it as getting Janscaped. Great service, great location, reasonably priced, and I enjoy the candy jar that is always filled with Hershey Kisses. Old school vibe and Jan even performs the old school barber shave. I had a great experience with Gary at 3rd Avenue Barber Shop. The shop itself is very nice, with upscale decor and furnishings. If a quick cut with no talking is what you want, do not come here. Gary has been all over and has a ton of experience, and had some great stories to tell. I mentioned off-hand that I had recently grown my hair longer (age is starting to thin my hair). He gave me a great style to use and taught me how to use a water-based pomade to manage it. He gave me a straight razor finish on my neck, which I always appreciate. I had a great experience here, and having used a few other barbers in the San Diego area, I will be returning for my haircuts whenever I'm in port here. read more

Highly recommend Gary and 3rd Avenue Barber Shop. I'm in town for a conference and needed a clean up trim. I called later in the evening, but Gary was nice enough to stay open and wait for me to walk there from the convention center. The shop is a nice, clean one-chair shop. Solid haircut from Jan. Was traveling and needed an impromptu trim before an event. I called and she worked me into her day. Charming lady who has been cutting men's hair at this location for over 14 years. A cut is $25 and bring cash or check. No credit cards here. Had a chance to get taken care of by Gary - what an incredibly friendly gentleman, who meticulously spent 30 minutes on me despite my lack of hair. He could have just buzzed through in a few minutes - but rather he made sure everything was perfect, went over my hair with metal and plastic guards to ensure a completely clean cut, and even offered me coffee. Jan, generally in Tuesday through Thursday, is excellent. Barbers cut a man's hair with scissors and skill -- hairdressers are just not the same. This woman is a real find. She has been cutting my hair for 4 years. I keep sending my friends to her, and they are all delighted. The best. read more

Both of them have lots of knowledge on the local area and I end up getting a haircut and a few history lessons on SD or a tip on what a good spot to explore is each time I go.
