    Went around 12:30 in the afternoon. Food was good but the wait for the burger was kinda long. Nice waiter. Reasonably priced.

Flakey tender pieces of cod were tossed in a sauce that had just enough heat to salivate the tongue without scorching. Arriving piping hot, the fragrant ginger, garlic, green onions, bell pepper, and chilis combine into a wonderful sauce covering the still crispy fish. You'll need an order of plain basmati rice ($5) to balance off the dish's saltiness. For diners who love saucy dishes, the creamy tomato-based curry in the kaida chicken ($16.50) is lovely for slathering on rice or dipping naan into. Of all the dishes, it held the least heat but still incorporated enough spices for flavour. There were generous chunks of chicken steeped in the gravy, but I would have liked dark meat better as the chicken breast was a little tough. Tawa's shrimp biryani ($17.99) was huge and while the shrimp were overcooked the rice was moist and flavourful. I couldn't get enough of the dish and had bowl after bowl despite being stuffed. You will not leave hungry. Even their naan ($3; two orders in picture) was sizeable and seemed like it was coming from a never-ending basket. We got to the place and he helped me order since I didn't really know what things were. I went with a butter chicken poutine and he ordered some garlic naan as well. I don't do well with spicy food and they said they could only do medium cause it was already marinated in the sauce so I decided to try it. The spice was actually not horrible and I could handle it. The naan helped a lot. I would much rather something less spicy but medium was the lowest they had for all the food. That's why I took off one star. The flavor was very different but not bad. I don't think I would ever order it again tho. I might go back if I'm ever there again to try something else but who knows. It was good so I give it 4 stars.

Bad news - the buffet listed here is a mere $30 per person. I went in with both eyes wide open and a cynical mindset in lieu of the way too reasonable $30 all-you-can-eat charge, but Casino Nova Scotia still exceeded my disappointment by serving one of the WORST meals I've ever eaten. Meaning I've had a meal at the horrible Hometown Buffet down in the neighborhood of Van Nuys, CA that was dirty as dirt - Casino Nova Scotia makes that now closed hellhole look like Cafe Sierra at Citywalk in LA. (Which serves a glorious seafood buffet for $150 a person!) First off the sides are seriously lagging. Meaning there are two sides tables to this "buffet" - but both have the exact same sides which means very little selection. Some meager and odd salad options, (cold mac and cheese...as a salad?!) plain mashed potatoes, crappy barely sauced pasta, overdone fried pickles, dry cornbread and overcooked Salmon. (The ONLY minor edible was the Alfredo sauced chicken - my guest didn't dig the garlic flavor - but when cheap as dirt chicken is your TOP meat at a Prime Rib feast you got problems!) So get to the nitty gritty - the main feature in the prime rib dinner - the prime rib. The one that drew me to this experience on a Saturday evening. (I've included a pic of what was online so you can see what I was expecting - yeah right!) Was it good? Was it sliced with picturesque medium rare glistening goodness like in the promised photo? What in fact...was there? A new roast was brought out right in front of me and it took them 5 minutes to lift it from the metal serving tray to the so called carving space dead center as it was falling apart in dripping chunks. Wet, overcooked and stringy as a yarn ball, this was the absolute worst meat I've ever had in my life. I cannot in good conscience call it prime rib - think roast beef, overdone and almost inedible. (The pic attached shows no such string stuff in it's advertising!) Finally to the desserts which were overly sweet and the only saving grace being the cobbler with fresh cream - again my guest was not a fan of the blueberries filling - but even then found what looked to be a pastry bag plastic topper in the cream on my cobbler. (Put it aside and kept eating - was starving and didn't care at that point!) So the moral here - you get what you pay for. They are using the sub-par kitchen and chefs to create a grotesque meal in a sneaky effort to get you in...to play casino games. This is not Gordon Ramsey's adjoining restaurant to compliment the ambience - this is a food that he would spit out and then close the place down. But even at mere $30 (or lesser if you are a casino gambling member) a starving hobo would feel ripped off, unsatisfied and mighty mad. Splurge on something better and avoid the con - here endeth the lesson.

The place was very busy around 8PM, but we got a table right away. The first thing that gave us a great feel was the fact that we were two of the only four white patrons in the entire dining room. I knew we were in for a treat. The staff was fantastic, quickly bringing water to our table and checking to see if we were ready to order. We eat a lot of Indian food, and I've got a lot of Indian friends from many years working in software roles. So, we do tend to be a little jaded on the quality of Indian restaurants. I did see a few dishes and breads we don't typically see at home in our favorite Indian places. My wife has a tendency to order the same dish when we go out for Indian every time, and I have a tendency to want to try different things. I was able to convince her to try the Murg Lawabdar (chicken) entree. I have to say, that may really be the best single Indian dish I've ever had. It was probably smart for us to tell our waitress "medium" when she asked what spice level we wanted. Medium at Mirchi is pretty darn hot and spicy, but by no means unbearable like a Vindaloo can get to. Murg Lawabdar was like a thick curry gravy, with tons of spices and a good heat level. I think using chicken thigh brings even more flavor to the dish, which also includes green pepper, chilis, and a good bit of onion. We split one order of this, and we couldn't even finish the whole thing. Trust me, we tried. I couldn't stop eating, it was so good. We also got the spicy chili garlic roti bread. Oddly enough, not many of our Indian restaurants around home offer roti. Almost all of them offer naan, though. The funny thing about this roti was that it was also spicy, sprinkled with red chili pepper flakes. So, when you tried to cool the fire from the Murg Lawabdar with the bread, it just got hotter! So, make sure you order some raita to go along with your meal. That goes a long way toward cooling you off if you reach the five-alarm fire level with a spicy dish. This place has very low-key cool vibe in a relatively small dining room. The atmosphere is so good, I highly recommend eating in the dining room instead of getting it to-go. This is as authentic as it gets, and I can't stress enough that this was one of the very best Indian meals I've ever had.

Gangnam Korean BBQ caught my eye as a place that would have something different - and more flavour - to offer. Their menu has a broad selection of options, with a couple dozen apps, as well as several each of rice and noodle dishes, soups, hot pot and of course, their namesake Korean BBQ. I was looking for something that wouldn't splatter my work clothes in some sort of sauce, so I went with the tofu bibimbap. It was a great mixture of crisp, pickled veg, a rich fried egg with crispy edges and a runny yolk, and soft, lightly fried tofu. A side of gochujang let me spice it up to my own taste. The bibimbap came with bonus sides of miso soup, kimchi and danmuji (yellow, pickled daikon). All added their own flavours and textures to the meal - the warm, savoury soup, the funky snap of the kimchi, and I really enjoyed the danmuji. In addition to its vibrant yellow, the pickling mellowed out the earthy funk of the daikon but each bite still had a great crunch and light tartness that helped cut through the richer parts of my meal. All told, it was a delicious meal and at an easy-on-the-wallet price of just $14 for a hearty, but healthy, meal. A return visit saw me coming by with my wife for a weekend lunch. She went for a couple of their many delicious-sounding apps, the fried Brussels sprouts and yakitori, while I went for the jajangmyeon (black bean pork and noodles). My wife's dishes came out first, and impressively quickly. Deep fried Brussels sprouts are this generations beet and goat cheese salad in their ubiquity, but hey, it works! With just the right level of char, the crispy cruciferous vegetable was dressed in a teriyaki sauce and sesame seeds for extra flavour. The yakitori weren't quite what I expected, as the chunks of chicken were deep fried instead of the typical grilling, but I appreciated their crisp crust that the frying imparted. A bed of spinach and drizzle of sauces felt like an unnecessary deviation that would be better served by a smoky, charcoal grilling, but they weren't bad so much as a bit superfluous. After a short wait, and a few stolen bites of my wife's food, my hefty bowl of noodles was before me. The noodles had a similar look to ramen, minus the de rigeur crinkle and weren't as supple, and came with a veritable sea of black bean sauce. The deeply rich, savoury and sweet sauce doused every noodle and then some, with tender bites of pork, cabbage and onion fleshing out the dish. Our server said this was his favourite dish on the menu, and I can see why - it's a bit of a deep cut versus the more familiar dishes to us non-Koreans, but it checked a lot of delicious boxes! My times sampling Gangnam's food have been nothing but complete successes, and while I benefit from proximity to them, they're a destination-worthy place with wonderfully executed food at more than reasonable prices.

Strolling in just as the small, midweek lunch crowd was starting to peter out, I was sat by the window in the expansive dining room. The finishes in the room felt a bit newer than many of their peers', with the exposed duct work and ceiling having a modern black finish, plus nice light fixtures, and a lovely mural of a lake on the far wall. Fan's menu has an interesting mix of legit Chinese dishes, dim sum, and the inescapable Chinese-Canadian food. It's likely quite necessary in an area where I'm guessing that a lot of the workers and residents don't have a palate for the more authentic Chinese dishes, and you can't fault Fan's for the hustle. I had been hoping that more of the dim sum dishes would be available during the week, but it seems like it's only on the weekend, so I resigned myself to an order of dumplings and one of the chef's specials, garlic beef and gailan, plus an order of steamed rice. The dumplings may not have been the prettiest, with uneven folds and somewhat inconsistent shapes, but these were chunky bois, and with nine to an order for $13, it's a helluva deal too! The filling was the standard pork and chive, and the meat was tender and juicy, without being rubbery and overcooked. Arriving while I was only a few dumplings deep, the garlic beef and gailan was a sight to behold! A velvety-smooth sauce coated strips of beef, onions and mushrooms, as well as the verdant gailan. The snap of the thick, but tender-crisp, stems made for a sharp contrast against the wonderfully tender beef. The garlic featured prominently in the flavour of this savoury dish, of course, but didn't overwhelm. My next time there had me coming back during the spring festival, celebrating a somewhat late New Year with my wife as we always do - by ordering way too much Chinese food for two people. First up were the egg rolls - done in the Halifax-style (aka the unflatteringly-named "meat paste" style), these hefty egg rolls had a nice hit of curry powder for flavour and the cute bottle of seemingly house-made plum sauce was a nice touch. Our main courses came in quick succession afterward. Beef and broccoli was spot-on with slices of beef that were once again perfectly tender, plus crispy florets of broccoli and a rich, salt and savoury sauce slathering it all. The Shanghai noodles with shredded pork may not be the most visually-appealing dish, but the flavour was fantastic, as a prominent layer of smoky wok hei enveloped the thick noodles and strips of pork and cabbage. You don't always see it on Chinese menus in Halifax, so we had to get the mapo tofu. We were very glad that we did, as it was one of the best that we've in the city! Although it didn't have a strong layer of funk or Sichuan-peppercorn-induced tingling, the great mix of flavours was still very satisfying - earthy wood ear mushrooms, pops of spice from chilis, the sweet and savoury pork sauce, and again a welcome hit of wok hei. Fan's cooks undoubtedly know what they're doing with a wok! A platter of assorted stir fried veggies added some more vegetable content to our meal and was well-executed. Fan's is firing on all engines with a welcoming space, friendly and attentive staff, and a mix of authentic and Chinese-Canadian dishes that given equal attention and care, elevating themselves in a crowded field. PS. Not only is their website impressively built compared to local peers that generally don't have one at all, they've got a very sizable menu of gluten-free dishes, which is *very* uncommon among Chinese food place, so let the celiacs in your life know!
