Great atmosphere, good drinks , the steak was delicious , I would definitely go back. The staff was helpful and very attentive!

    Crème brûlée

Calm premium ambiance and decor, New York chic. Service was good, not great for an upscale restaurant. Didn't bring out any silver wear or plates until after the entrée came out. Sides and spinach dip appetizer were good, not much to write home about. Steaks were very enjoyable and well seasoned. Crème brûlée F***ED! Made up for underwhelming service.

Admittedly, I only finally came to Baton Rogue after a lack of success on other nearby patios on a Friday evening. It's in a cool old building, but I'm never in a rush for the codified mediocrity that tends to be chain restaurants. All the steaks are in the same price range, mid-$20s to mid-$30s, so I went with the 12oz New York striploin, medium rare. It comes with seasonal veggies, and I got sweet potato fries with it for my side. The patio was mostly full and I'm not sure how busy the inside was, but it took a little bit for the food to arrive, but it wasn't surprising given the crowd and cooking steak takes time. The veggies turned out to be grilled broccoli, cauliflower and bell peppers. Certainly nothing fancy, but they were colourful and decreased some of the guilt of eating an immense hunk of steak and fries. Said fries were your typical, from-frozen sweet potato fries, but they were pretty crispy and well seasoned, so they were fine. The main event was on par with the rest of the meal - not bad, but not impressive. The medium rare was definitely more of a medium, and it would have benefited from being cooked at a higher temperature to get some light charring for a better hot-off-the-grill flavour. It was still moist and tender, and the pepper on it wasn't over the top. Service was friendly and checked in frequently. I might come back if in need of a patio or if they have some drink specials on, but there's a lot of better ways to spend $30+ on a main course in Halifax.

Great location downtown Halifax, near waterfront, casino, historic properties. The service was really good in all aspects. The downside for me was the food. My husband was happier than I was so I will share his review as well. Starter was cheese dip, I couldn't eat it, it has very little flavor and chips were also bland. Hubby said was OK. Lobster ravioli...pasta was cooked perfectly but the lobster filling was very mushy and could barely taste the lobster. Hubby's prime rib was cooked perfectly at med rare and was delicious! The mushrooms were amazing and the sweet potato fries were the best we've ever had! Scallops (3) bought as a side dish were slightly overcooked. Overall 3 stars because the price point is too high for the quality. Safest bet is to always order the steak and stay away from pasta here.

ABSOLUTELY loved this place, I don't really eat out because everytime I do something goes wrong with my food but this time was just perfect other than the waiter taking a bit to long to get back to us about dessert menu we asked for over 10 minutes ago and then after lookiNg over she took a really long time coming back again so we could order dessert. She was a lovely server I really enjoyed her checking in on us everyone now and then!! Was positive attitude the whole way through. Myself and my partner got 1 spinach dip best dip I've had came freshhhhh 1 ribs and chicken that was okay 1 devil burger found the meat dry but was filling. 1 sweet potato fries and for dessert peanut butter fudge brownie cheesecake I wasn't a big fan but my hubby was would definitely come back another time, seating was nice area was quiet and private go check them. Our server Lauren was great.

10 oz ribs. Just the right size and great flavour.

Don't know why it took us so long to try this place. Maybe because we tend to steer away from franchise and chain restaurants. We forget that successful franchises are successful for a reason. We've been looking for a place to get a consistently good steak at a reasonable price, somewhere between greasy spoon and mortgage the house. I think we might have found it. I had the 10 oz ribs with fries and cinnamon apples. B had the ribeye with fries and mixed veg. We both started with the add on caesar salad. The caesar salad was okay. It was simple; romaine, croutons, parmesan and an egg free dressing. To be honest, it lacked great flavor, couldn't detect any garlic, the only flavour that really came through was the dijon. Once our mains arrived, all was forgiven. We were both happy with our meal. Both arrived hot, done to specifications and full of flavor. I really liked the cinnamon apples, something a little different. and kind of substituted for a dessert for which we had no room. Our server Nathaniel was great. He came through with good suggestions, was engaging and attentive at all the right times. We'll be back.

Delicious steak meal and some of the yummiest fries of all time

My mother and I both really enjoyed our meals when we ate here together. My mother had ribs and I had steak, and we shared a bottle of wine. The food was excellent, the wine was very good (and the bartender was very quick to fill our glasses which was nice) and the service was great. The fries were realllllly good, crispy and spiced. Weird to talk about the fries but they were really good. The meal was a typical steak meal with grilled veggies on the side but I liked that they gave me zucchini (my fave) and the mushrooms I added were very good but hey I love mushrooms. My steak was a touch overcooked (more of a medium than a medium rare) but it was still so tasty I had devoured it pretty quickly nonetheless and I can enjoy steak anywhere from a rare to a medium anyway so I'm not the type who would EVER complain ha I just eat it and enjoy it anyway! It was very similar to a meal I had at the Keg, but I'd say I liked my meal at Baton Rouge better than the Keg, and it was slightly cheaper. I'd recommend this place !

The Oscar! 7oz Filet Mignon, 6oz lobster w garlic butter, garlic mashed potatoes, seasonal veggies, asparagus & hollandaise sauce
    Kayla D.

Went here for my first time and my boyfriend's second time. The occasion was for my birthday and I was excited to try a new steakhouse. Everything was delicious, cooked perfectly, and the mashed potatoes were steaming hot! (Which I like). I got the Oscar which is part of their feature menu, I had a steak, lobster, and my sides everything was good. However, the menu listed it came with a top sirloin and my waitress offered me that or a filet Mignon. Of course I'm going to go with a better cut steak. The only thing that I had an issue with was she never told me any pricing or the difference between keeping the sirloin or having a huge upgrade to a Mignon. The top sirloin is listed at 8oz with the meal 39 With filet Mignon it's 7oz with the meal at 49 I don't care about the price but it's a curiosity to inform the customer what their paying for, incase it does effect their food choice. Other than that I am likely to return to this location.

I had minor critiques, but overall was in love and would return and recommend to anyone. Food: We started with the bread and mussels. Best mussels we've ever had, as they were cooked perfectly (and fresh) and the broth was heaven. The bread pairing was perfect to soak up all the buttery broth goodness. Next was the Shrimp Bao. The bread was fluffy and light, and shrimp was at chilled room temperature, perfect for a summer day. A good flavour of celery in case you dislike that, but I'd still suggest you try it! Finally we had the Zucchini and Beef Tartare. Zucchini didn't wow, though still fresh and summer minty vibes. Beef Tartare...hands down best we've ever had. The Asian fusion incorporated was perfect. Closed it out with a Strawberry & Cream, which albeit simpler was well done. Drinks: Go for them all. Very creative and they can walk you through tasting notes perfectly. Milk Punch (method; not actually milk; recommend), Strawberry Basil Negroni (strongly recommend; not traditional negroni alcohol forward), Eucalyptus Sour (subtle, calm and collected; recommend), Corn Star (be adventurous, as the chipotle is super subtle; worth the risk; recommend), Vesper (again, not alcohol forward; recommend). Atmosphere: Cozy and charming, yet the accents are vibrant and energizing. Indoor volume is medium, and great for a family, cocktail, date or a "i want a nice drink/bite" any day of the week.

The Asian fusion entrées looked outstanding, but we had come to Nova Scotia Hoping for fresh seafood. Then my eyes landed on "Fish Tacos". My heart skipped a beat. When our server told us they were prepared with haddock, the Hallelujah Chorus immediately began playing in my head. Haddock is native to the cold waters off Nova Scotia, so it simply doesn't get any fresher than that. As an added bonus, we ordered the garlic aioli fries, generously sprinkled with Parmesan and Romano cheese. While our meals were being prepared, our server, Jacob, completely won us over with his warm personality, attentive service, and fascinating insights into life in Nova Scotia. At the time, we were the only guests in the restaurant, and he laughed as he explained that 32°C was considered a bit on the warm side for the locals. If they weren't working, he said, they were probably at home enjoying the air-conditioning! Then our food arrived. It was beautifully plated, but the presentation was only the opening act. When I took my first bite ... oh my goodness! It was without question, the most delicious fish taco I have ever eaten. Even my 74-year-old taste buds perked up like my kitty when she hears the rustling of her treat bag. Every bite delivered a delicate crunch, followed by moist, flaky, haddock, complemented by sweet, pineapple bits, pickled jalapeños, avocado aïoli, and a light dusting red pepper flakes. The balance of flavors were simply extraordinary. Honestly, I can't imagine a better fish taco. The restaurant itself is equally inviting. Natural wood finishes create a warm relaxed atmosphere. that makes you want to linger. The portions were generous. The prices are reasonable and Jacob's outstanding hospitality elevated the entire dining experience. If your travels bring you anywhere near Halifax, do yourself a favor and stop by Side Hustle in Dartmouth on the other side of the bay. It's one of those delightful culinary gems that you'll remember long after the last bite and one we will enthusiastically recommend to anyone visiting the Halifax/Dartmouth area of Nova Scotia.

This space used to be the Foggy Goggle, and it's gotten a little bit of a freshening up since then, but the narrow bar still has a cozy feel. There was a handful of other customers, but unsurprisingly it was relatively quiet. The menu is moderately-sized for a pub, with several each of apps, sandwiches and entrees - enough to give you a good selection but not so much that you're overwhelmed with choices. In non-American chain restaurant boycott times, I'm a big fan of Wendy's bacon mushroom melt, so it was an easy choice when I spotted the "Mushroom Peppercorn Burger" on the menu. My bowl-loving wife opted for the Mexican Rice Bowl, one of several dishes that are gluten free or can be made so. A moderate wait later (shout out to what appeared to be the lone cook in the kitchen doing his best), and our food was before us. My burger was a messy sight to behold, with the peppercorn-dotted gravy posing from the burger and onto the plate. More importantly, it lives up to its visual appeal! The gravy was a stole the show, with the prominent, peppery bite playing off the rich, velvety gravy. Bacon and frizzled onions added some crunch, while melty cheese and mushrooms amped up the umami. Somehow, the bun withstood the onslaught, although this burger was absolutely a multi-napkin affair. My side Caesar salad was perfectly adequate - nothing to write home about, but nothing to complain about either. My wife enjoyed the mix of flavours and textures in her Mexican rice bowl, and although the grilled chicken portion was good and generous (and blessedly not from-frozen, diced chicken), the rest of the bowl ingredients were a bit lacking. A little more rice would go a long way to fill things out a bit more, with limited effect on food costs. Our next time back also found us coming by on another quiet, Monday evening before trivia elsewhere. Spice bags are a bit of a "thing" in Ireland, as a post-bar meal that originally Chinese takeout spots served up, and then they propagated to other restaurants and eventually beyond Irish borders. Some pubs in Halifax have picked up the low-key trend as well, which isn't surprising since at its core, it's just chopped up chicken fingers, fries and seasonings - all of which pubs typically have anyway. The Duke's version eschews the takeout bag roots of the dish and gets messier with a sweet chili sauce, as well as a curry mayo on the side. I'd definitely prefer to see the fries and chicken tossed in a dry rub so that they can stay crispy, and the cloying, commercial sauce just isn't necessary. If you're looking for some deep fried and indulgent, this is your fix. The Duke's has charming bones and some interesting items on the menu, but some small tweaks could easily elevate their offerings and make this a great local for the neighbourhood.
