    Pan-fried haddock
    Jill W.

Huge menu and fresh seafood galore! My friend swears by this place so we gave it a happy try and were not disappointed. Food is excellent and portions are huge. I had the pan-fried haddock with potato skins (nostalgic for the 90s... they were filling but slightly too salty for me). The haddock was delicious and a huge piece, really enjoyed it. There are interesting daily specials, well priced... the pork chop looked enviable. Server was a true pro, gave good recommendations and looked after us well. Interior could use a decor update and exterior is a terrasse on a parking lot... but the menu and value are worth it.

I'm sorry to say that the small lobster was overcooked....you can tell when there is tons of the white stuff (the lobsters blood), it was not sweet, probably because it was overcooked. I would have preferred plain or salted butter to their seasoned version. The spicey potato skins were not spicy but very salty and they're not skins as you expect on most menus, but shavings from potatoes. The steak was perfectly cooked and tender but way too salty. The coleslaw slaw was good, but could have been much better if it werent so watery. Rock, my server was patient and excellent.

Amazing service. Went for lunch with a large group and service went so smoothly and fast. The food was great and coming from out of town I would fly out for them again. Again can't express how much the waitresses were so kind and amazing!!

Great option for food in the Dartmouth area. The restaurant gets pretty busy at peak times and definitely see why. The staff is very friendly and gives good suggestions from their extensive menu. The atmosphere feels very old-school in a good way. There are lots of food options to choose from, with a lot of Nova Scotian specialties throughout the menu. Opted for the Steak and Lobster dinner with roasted potatoes on the side. The lobster was well cooked and the meat came off the shell easily for easy butter dipping. The steak was an 8 oz bacon wrapped sirloin. Not typically the biggest fan of the sirloin cut but the steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare and seasoned well. The side of roast potatoes were crispy and well seasoned. I can see why this place is an institution for the area and will definitely be back to try something else from the menu.

I've heard a lot of buzz that Mic Mac is one of the highlights of the Dartmouth food scene, and upon entering the restaurant for lunch I had my expectations set pretty high. The staff were friendly and service was swift to accommodate our needs. The part of the restaurant where we were seated had framed photos and articles surrounding local sports, so I spent my time waiting for my order staring at them. We were also served bottomless coffee, which is welcome. I ordered the surf & turf scallops with a medium rare steak and mashed potatoes and coleslaw as sides. Part of me wanted to try out the lobster surf & turf since that included the entire lobster rather than the tail that's normally served, but it might've been too much for lunch. The dish came around 35 minutes after the order. The scallops were fresh and savoury, the quality you would come to expect on the East Coast. The coleslaw and salad were fine, but never really stood out. The steak was exceptionally thick, so it turned out to be more rare than medium rare. The mashed potatoes come with butter, something you'll need upon realizing you need something to offset its dryness. I did enjoy the dish overall, though for the purpose of filling me up the surf & turf had a small portion size for its price. This probably goes better as a dinner meal, in hindsight. I would like to come here again if I'm ever in the area and try out some of the other seafood dishes they serve.

Wow! Unbelievable food and service. Special shout-out to our server, Rock. We were a party of 10 on a Monday night. We were in search of lobster and a place that could accommodate kids. We struck out at other places like Salty's, Bluenose, and McKelvie's - and were a little hesitant to cross the toll bridge to Dartmouth when there were so many options downtown. But based on reviews and a friend's recommendation - we went for it. Wow - was it ever worth it. The restaurant is situated centrally in Dartmouth, and the outside isn't anything special to look at (though the drive passed the ponds, lakes, and the rowing club was quite picturesque). Our reservation was for 7:45 pm. We had a great corner table. Our server, Rock, was incredibly hospitable, knowledgable and articulate about the menu and the cuts of meat, and was on point with all of his recommendations. He strongly recommended the state based off of how they preserve an age it. Our table tried so many different things. Rock was diligent about double checking all menu items for egg and nut allergies. Everything was good. Appetizers: - Calamari was excellent. It is fried, but it's delicious and works with both sauces (we had our sauces on the side, but it's probably best to get it with sweet chilli on - and the aioli on the side). - Scallop pan fried was good. There are four served. The sauce was ok. - The Beef Nachos were huge! We had the large size. Plenty of deliciousness for multiple people to drive into. - The poutine was also huge, and the kids that ate it loved it. Mains: We had various selections of surf and turf based on Rock's recommendation to try steak. - the Steak overall was outstanding, most/ juicy/ flavourful. - the Steak and Lobster dinner came with a full size lobster. Everyone that had the lobster finished it whole. Highly recommended. - our local friend had the scallops and potatoes. People with the scallops enjoyed them but I didn't get a bite of it. - I had the Thai curry mussels and steak special. It was delicious. - some of the kids had burgers, and they enjoyed them. - there are a ton of sides to choose from. I'd recommend the loaded potato if you want a hybrid of potato skins and chips, garlic bread, and smashed veggies with brown sugar. The fries were good but nothing outstanding or unique. Dessert: - The skor ice cream cake was sooooooo good. - the caramel sundae was pretty basic but good and served with Chapman's ice cream. The watermelon ale was an nice, light beer. This place has our highest recommendation. Thank you Rock for an amazing experience and wonderful food. All the best to you. Honestly, one of the best servers I've had - period.

Pan fried lemon pepper Haddock with fully loaded garlic mash.

Ok, we all know Mic Mac is a staple in Dartmouth. Was recently in town from Virginia and visited this place twice. Was never disappointed either time. The service is great, food is favorable, beer is on point. It is always packed with patrons but you never seem to wait on anything. If anyone is ever in Dartmouth I highly recommend the Lemon Pepper Haddock. Was so awesome and I can't say anything bad about it. Bravo!

My wife and I detoured to Dartmouth, N.S. During our recent holiday shopping trip in Halifax. We stopped in on a busy Saturday morning to a packed restaurant. We waited for about 5-10 mins for a table to open up. The waitress took our drink order and returned not long after and took our food order. From the time we ordered until we got our food was 13 mins. We both ordered the Eggs Benny. I substituted the back bacon with regular bacon. It included spiced home fries. The waitress was friendly and professional.

This burger was amazing , so huge, fries done to perfection!had to take half home it was so filling

She was laughing at the multiple old men at the bar. When we finally got her attention her words were 'you look confused' and I was - there was no sign about where to sit. Once seated my boyfriend got the engine room burger and ceaser salad - the lettuce on the bun was literally browning. I got the turkey dinner daily special and aside from the black hair on top of my turkey, it was dry and has absolutely no flavour. We waited a really long time for a refill. The atmosphere was grungy and definitely didn't feel welcoming. The most attention we received was from the multiple flies around us and our food. We arrived before the supper rush and while it was busy, the place was not full by any means with multiple empty tables. We sat up in 'The Boat' which is right next to the bar which is an awkward step up but we weren't offered one of the empty tables so we figured it out even though it wasn't conducive to having a conversation with two other people. The server who gave us menus was friendly but failed to bother to bring any water the entire time we sat there (nearly an hour). The first round of drinks showed up fairly promptly and she took our food order right after that. We opted not to get appetizers because we didn't want to eat too much before our show, but had we known how long we'd have to wait, we would have gotten something. We couldn't even order something to share between the four of us because 'The Boat' is two separate tables. We chatted as we waited for our drinks that we finished and waited some more for someone to bring food. After the last drinks were empty for at least 10 minutes, our server came back to ask if we wanted another round. Seeing as we didn't have food yet (we'd already been waiting 30 minutes), I opted out while the three others ordered one. At this point, I wasn't willing to spend more money for poor service and a long wait. We watched as a large group that clearly arrived long before us, finally got their food after 35 minutes of us having put in our order. A couple across from us showed up at least 20 minutes after us, got drinks, food and the bill before we were even offered a second drink or told about where our food was. During the time, we watched as other patrons came in, were served their food and left before our food even arrived. After about 40 minutes, our server came around and said 'it shouldn't be much longer, we're training kitchen staff so it's taking a little longer'. Not our problem, and clearly not true seeing as so many others who arrived after us were getting their food. The entire time we were waiting, servers stood around the register talking and not really checking on tables. By this point, people kept rolling in, the place got busy and we still didn't have our food 45 minutes after ordering. When our orders finally showed up after 53 minutes of being placed, mine wasn't what I ordered. I asked for a pan fried fish burger and got pan fried fish. The server was adamant that's what I ordered and proceeded to tell me that 'the only difference is the bun and veggies, otherwise it's the same fish'. I was quite surprised at the comment rather than offering to make it right. Given we had a waited nearly an hour for our food by this point, I sucked it up and just ate what I got. Service here is definitely lacking and it's clear staff doesn't have the skills required to deal with people. While the food was alright, the sides looked like they were scraped off of other peoples' plates and just thrown onto ours. No one bothered to check on us or apologize. When the bill arrived, I noticed $5.50 taken off and no explanation. I begrudgingly paid the nearly $70 bill for the two of us and decided we wouldn't be back again!

Even though we knew about where it was, we walked right past the beautiful two-story historic house initially. We knew by taking a look at the website they do not accept reservations, which was fine with us. We were, however, going on a Friday night. On walking into the main entry, that space was packed wall-to-wall. Within a few short minutes, one of the staff greeted us. They don't exactly have a formal wait list here, from what I could tell. The staff member offered us the drinks menu and asked if we'd like to order something while we waited on a table. We ordered up a couple of pints, then looked around for some open space to stand. They have two standing bar rails, one in the main area near the bar itself and another one in the middle dining area. This place has about the most creative layout of booths and tables I've ever seen. They do have an outdoor patio out back, but we didn't take a look at that. They have quite a few very comfy two-person booths around the interior. It appeared the way the wait list worked was that they either have a phenomenal memory, or they actually use the bar tab you open to work like a wait list. It seems to really be more about how many you have in your party, and the exact size of any tables/booths that open up. We might have waited about 30 minutes or so for our table for two up in the front of the main dining room. Every single person on the wait staff here is amazing. Let me just get that out of the way. The beer list is great, loaded up with so many good local and Nova Scotia craft beer options. The food menu is what really makes this place special, though. We were on vacation, so we may have a tendency for our eyes to be bigger than our stomachs can handle. There was just so many amazing looking dishes. We started out with a pickle jar, fried taters, and the tomatoes appetizers. I have to say, and my wife agrees, the tomatoes dish was the best of everything we had. Its made up of sliced cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, shallots, capers, and garlic chips. All that is sitting on top of creme fraiche. By the time you're finishing the dish, you start thinking about a straw to finish up that creme fraiche. Good grief, that was so good. Don't pass on the fried taters, though. Those seemed to be mashed potatoes formed into rectangular big fries, cooked almost like panko and served with horseradish sour cream. After all that, we could only muster splitting the deli style chop salad with cold water shrimp on it. Our great waitress talked us into an order of the brown bread, a very soft kind of Irish soda bread I believe. That bread just melts in your mouth. If you decide to venture out to The Narrows, you're in for a total experience. You'll feel like you stepped back in time to a real British pub... the house must be from somewhere around the mid 1800s. Every room is warm and cozy, with beautiful woodwork and curious antiques in all sorts of nooks and crannies. You may have quite a long wait depending on the size of your party and how busy the place is, but trust me... its worth every minute.

There was a small surge of BBQ places in Halifax in the 2010s, and while that eventually died down, it's good to see the trend spread elsewhere to add new kinds of cuisine to other areas of the province. The interior is spacious, with a bar at one end, a section with several booths, and even more tables beyond that. The décor isn't over-the-top with southern US kitsch like many barbecue joints and could easily pass for a regular bar and grill. Normally when I try a BBQ place for a first time, I go all-in on a sampler platter to try as many of the smoked meats as possible. Alas, Belly Up is the only BBQ place that I've been to that doesn't have this option. As a result, I went with the beef brisket platter since that's more unique to Belly Up, and things like ribs and pulled pork can be found at many restaurants these days. It wasn't too too busy when I arrived and most people were already eating, so my food arrived in quick order. The brisket came as two long, thick slices, and the broad layer of fat on top told me I was getting the fatty end of the brisket. There was a bit of a smoke ring around the edges, although I didn't find that it had a prominently smoky flavour. It was spot-on for tenderness though - the meat broke apart easily, but didn't crumble from being overcooked, and each bite was tender and juicy. You get a choice of a few different sauces with your meat (which is served entirely on the side) and the chipotle sauce was savoury and not *too* sweet, but again, I'd prefer a heavier level of smokiness from the namesake pepper. You get two different sides with each entrée, so again I went with some of the more unique options - the corn fritters and the apple coleslaw. The corn fritters were very well executed - crisp on the outside, fluffy and moist on the inside, and with a hint of sweetness. The ginger and jalapeno honey sauce that came with them was also a surprise hit, with a good balance of sweetness and subtle layer of heat. I generally prefer a vinegar-based dressing for my coleslaw to cut through the rich dishes that it's often paired with, but I still enjoyed Belly Up's apple slaw. The additional crunch and sweetness of the julienned apples brought some complexity to what is often the most forgettable part of a meal, and honestly it's just nice to see a slaw that's done in-house instead of coming out of a five-gallon bucket from Sysco. Service was friendly and attentive throughout my meal. There's definitely some tweaks that Belly Up could do to polish their BBQ game, but it's a still a solid option for something different in the food scene in Truro.
