I had some business in the same block one weekend in August and noticed a long line outside this place, mostly filled with locals. Curious, I asked a few people and found out that this bakery is a pop-up that operates only once or twice a month, with patrons eagerly waiting for the days it opens. Wow, that sounded tempting enough, but the line was too long for me. This month, I was there right when they opened (around 12 PM) and managed to get into the bakery with a relatively short wait time (about 15 minutes). They offer a wide variety of tarts, cake slices, biscuits, and cakes. We bought a few different slices and a dozen leek biscuits. My family loved everything, especially the biscuits. First thing you need to know-- Nancy's baked goods have a nuanced sophistication and perfect balance... At a reasonable price. Second thing --- CASH and CHECK only ;) Her ingredients are fresh and her combination of flavors and ingredients is thoughtful. First of all, just walking in there and taking a deep breath will give you a sugar high immediately. Everything I've tried there is delicious: macaroons, cranberry and orange cheesecake, apple cheesecake, and a flourless dark chocolate cake that rivals Finale's delightful version up in Boston. They sell some of their products by the slice, so you don't have to buy a whole cake if you don't want to. They also make a chocolate mousse "yule log" that you have to order ahead of time for the holidays, as they only make a set number every year. I'll be doing that next year. Beware: credit cards NOT accepted. Check or cash only. Call ahead to make sure they're open, and be prepared for the possibility of waiting in line. There are two or three little tables set up for in-store eating that are always taken whenever I go. It's definitely worth it, though. The ladies who work there are super nice and very helpful, and ready with a recommendation if you're not sure what to get. read more

I come to 4 & Twenty often for their amazing baked goods. Their coffee too is delicious. I am always greeted with a smile, unlike Some places that hire some young kid who will smoke a cigarette in front of the establishment and come in and ask if they can help you without washing their hands (Willoughbys Madison, CT). 4 & 20 is amazing, and if you are fortunate to have their cinnamon scones when they come right out of the oven, you will want to eat the whole batch. This place is not open on Wednesday or Sunday :(. I understand they need days off, but I wished they crafted their goods on Sundays. read more

Absolutely amazing muffins and scones. Fresh and hot out of the oven, they are simply delicious and worth every single calorie. The muffin variety available changes every day, however I can specifically recommend the blueberry (best blueberry muffins I've found from any bakery), peach (only available in season), chocolate chip, pumpkin pecan and "morning glory". a pretty good bake shop. we were here sort of mid-day and it looked like they had run out of a few things. the open kitchen is visible from the ordering counter and it was nice and clean. the cupcake i had was small, but for $1.65 or something like that it was fairly priced and quality was very good. the cookie had the largest chocolate chips i have ever had and was a good size too but a little too nutty. i would go back and try to go earlier next time to get a better choice of goods.. breads all looked decent too. it seems there are a lot of bake shops around here?? read more

We hadn't been here since we first moved to Guilford just over 2 years ago. Our first visit around then, we got a baguette (that unfortunately tasted like Italian bread shaped into a baguette) and some other baked good that wasn't noteworthy (and didn't bother to come back). About a month ago, we were on our way to a party and were short on time as we usually are these days, so we stopped by to pick up a cake or tart. Lucky us! We got a 7" raspberry tart that was so beautiful, it could've been made in NYC or Paris. Even more impressive, it tasted better than it looked. The tart was devoured in minutes and we were only sad we didn't get a bigger tart (not available last minute). So yesterday, we ordered a 9" tart (picked up 3pm) and it is almost gone (9am today). We have another one on order for a small get together Saturday. This time, we will remember to take a photo before digging in! read more

We all feel so lucky she is here. Although I wish she took credit cards I understand why she doesn't so I always go in with cash. Not a big deal. The. Best. Bakery. Ever. If you find the folks behind the counter unfriendly, I suggest that you take a good look at yourself. Perhaps you're the problem. The almond marzipan scones are the best. The savory leek and pepper biscuits are unsurpassed. If you bring one of their pies or cakes with you to a dinner party, birthday party, holiday shindig, book club get-together, or neighborhood potluck, you'll be asked back EVERY TIME. If you bring their muffins (made fresh daily, some with seasonal fruits) to an early morning business meeting, you'll close the deal. Yes, they're that good. Everything is fresh. Everything is tasty. The place is cozy. They are reliable. All the offerings are reliable good. They carry Harney & Sons teas, especially Paris tea, and sell locally roasted coffee. This place is to be commended for staying true, staying authentic, and keeping it real, day-in and day-out, for so many years. Quite an accomplishment in a pop-up, disposable world. My favorite bakery in the world. Nancy's baked goods are perfectly balanced such that you experience the rich nuance of every flavor. They're buttery and light with just the right touch of sweetness. Her muffins are delectable: light clouds of buttery goodness, with bursts of fresh seasonal fruits. Love the rhubarb in the spring. Her scones manage to thwart the fate of so many scones: not at all brick-like, they're moist and delicious, substantive without being too dense. My favorite is the lemon blueberry, a perfect sweet-and-tart combo. Another standout are the bread puddings, also made with fresh seasonal ingredients, often from Nancy's garden. Recently we had a ham gruyere bread pudding that was to die for. I could go on and on, but instead of reading more about 4 & 20, you should get yourself there and gaze upon the multitude of offerings. I guarantee you'll leave with a larger collection of little white bags of goodies than you planned, and you won't regret it! read more

I have long been a devoted fan of this bakery. The cakes, scones, muffins and other treats are outstanding, and I visit the shop at least once a month for one of their rather expensive desserts. Sadly, I shall no longer patronize this establishment...because of a cup of hot water. Three of us ordered rolls, a coffee and two hot teas. The coffee is self serve in the seating area. We were given tea bags, and filled our cups with hot water and coffee, and enjoyed our treats at a table. As we were refilling our tea mug with hot water, the owner stuck her head out of the kitchen and coldly informed us that we would have to pay for our refills. I was embarrassed (not sure why, as there was no sign informing us of the refill policy). So I meekly paid another $1.86 for a half cup of hot water (no new tea bag). Needless to say that will be my last visit. To lose a regular, loyal customer over a $1.86 half cup of hot water is very sad for this business. Perhaps they should post a small sign at the self serve coffee stand that they charge for refills....or maybe move the coffee behind the counter....or the owner could have said, "ladies just so you know for next time, we charge for refills". Alas....I left the shop for the last time, angry and embarrassed. Fortunately, there are a few other lovely bakeries nearby - Hen and Heifer and Take the Cake. I shall miss Four and Twenty, but I will not be treated like that over hot water. read more
