I am an occasional visitor to Guilford, but whenever I go, the thing I most look forward to is seafood from Star Fish Market. This is hands down the best fish market I have ever been to. The sea food is unbelievably fresh and it's clear that the owners have relationships with vendors that give them the top of the catch. No matter what I buy there - and I've bought clams, salmon, sea bass, to name a memorable few - I am always thrilled. They also have a wonderful prepared seafood salad, which is the right way to kick off a holiday by the beach. It doesn't look like much, but I was wowed by the flavor and freshness, and now that is one of the things I looked forward to each time I return. PS their dog is named Dory. I have found my fish market! I picked up some ahi tuna the other day to make homemade poke bowls, and the tuna was awesome! I preordered it and they called me to let me know it came in. It was a nice thick cut of beautiful tuna! I wish I took a picture before I made my dinner. I have attached a picture. It's not a traditional poke bowl, but close enough. A cute little shop in a strip mall along route 1 in Guilford. Lots of gourmet and local items. Not a ton of fish, but strong fish smell. We went on a quiet Saturday afternoon to get something for dinner. There was only one other customer in the store and about 5 or 6 employees behind the counter. After a few minutes of waiting at the register, no one acknowledged our presence or offered to help. We walked out and went to the Big-Y next door. I am a fishmonger and part of my training took place at Star Fish Market under it's mastermind and creator, Frank. He was hired as a consultant for a nationally recognized epicurean market. I had a lot of doubts about his method of selling seafood, but after working with him for a couple of months I was completely sold. To begin with, the seafood comes from the best purveyors and it always top of the catch. You will not find top of the catch in grocery stores or run of the mill fishmongers. These wholesalers are kind of fishmongers that sell to the very best restaurants around the world (over night commodity shipping) and have been doing so for generations. Secondly, the stores philosopy was to procure this product at the most reasonable prices for the customer. This is what they are still accomplishing. If you live in the area or are just passing through on the highway you should stop, just to see how the display is done. It's epic. I salute the owners for maintaining the quality standards that began decades ago, and clearly expanding those standards into cheese and meats from such quality purveyors as D'Artagnan And Niman. read more

So today I was jonesing for Sword. And when I asked for it the patriarch said no...he didn't like what came in and he wasn't going to sell it. Well that's telling, isn't it. They have some really awesome and fresh seafood! I ordered a huge octopus last week and it was beautiful. Obviously you have to know how to cook an octopus properly, but the quality was well above average and the price per lb was excellent! I think it was somewhere around $12 per lb which is very good considering the quality. I will be a regular customer for sure. read more

Star Fish Market is the perfect example of the phrase "You get what you pay for." Yes, you will most likely pay more for their seafood than you will at any of the area grocery stores. However, the quality of the seafood is so superior to what you find at a grocery store. I stopped buying seafood from Stop and Shop after having to return spoiled fish twice and noticing an unpleasant aftertaste on other occasions. The seafood from Star Fish Market is not only always fresh, but the taste and texture make it clear that their products are worth the higher price. We have had several types of fish, shrimp, and lobster from Star Fish Market. The staff is great and have even given me advice on cooking types of fish I hadn't tried before. Everything has always been excellent. One service you really should take advantage of is the option to place a seafood order online and pick it up at the store later. This way, you can easily see pricing and availability without having to go to the store. I've done this several times and it is very simple. Just go to their website, put in your contact info and the amount of each fish you want, and pick it up at a time of your choosing. When I do this, the fish is always packaged and ready for me when I get to the store. I wish we could buy from Star Fish Market more often, but I am happy to have really good seafood from time to time rather than crappy seafood on a regular basis. What's the point of buying fish at a good price if your family won't eat it because of an ammonia aftertaste or if you have to toss it and make another trip to the store for your money back? FRESH seafood, right off the boat. We called ahead for a selection of raw oysters. They put them aside for us bc they sometimes run out. We had Duxbury Island and New Brunswick. Was told they had Noank too. We ordered a mixed dozen at $18 - it's a steal! When we arrived, they were out of Noank, so ended up with 6 of the other 2. This place has better cooked shrimp than City Fish in Wethersfield. Starfish has better fish than Whole Foods, wild salmon in particular. My French mother-in-law who swore off wild salmon after many bad experiences with dry product has changed her mind after tasting the fresh wild salmon I got from Starfish recently. Starfish has very similar quality fish to Fjord Fisheries in Greenwich and Westport, which is a huge compliment because Fjord only sells the best. Did I mention I'm from Boston? We have some good seafood up there. Oh, they will shuck oysters on the half shell and give them to you on a bed of ice. They have a nice little selection of cheese, some I have only seen at Murray's Cheese in NYC. The only thing lacking? No fresh dungeness crab or lobster, will have to trek up to City Fish for that. read more

Really delicious and tasty, My family and I only get our seafood here and have never had a problem in the 4 years we have been coming here. The service is great and the location is superb. Quality of service is excellent! There is always a very big selection of fish to choose from (tuna, sword, scallops, lobsters, shrimp) and they can get in mostly anything. Stopped in on a recent Saturday and was surprised that many of the fresh fish selections displayed in their case were already sold out. They did not have live lobsters, which for a fish market I was very surprised. The only option for lobster tails were those that were frozen and very small in size, less than a pound each. I opted for a few of those and some of the fresh scallops, which looked good. The tails were definitely "freezer-burned" upon defrosting. I should have gone to Big Y down the street as their quality is just as equal to Star Fish Market at a fraction of the cost. read more

I'm really puzzled by all the rave reviews, I can only imagine it reflects the owners' good standing in the community and customer goodwill more than a fair reflection of what is on offer. The shop itself does not display any fresh fish, or very little--the refrigerator counter only shows 1-2 sample cuts shrink-wrapped Japanese style--they get what they sell you from behind the counter or in the back. This means you never get to see what you're actually ordering, you can't see how fresh it is, and you have no choice of cut unless you assert yourself with the server. I really wanted to like the place and made three separate trips to get salmon. The first trip, the skin of the fish was leathery as though it had been out in the air for a long time. I'd never seen anything like it. The second trip was similar, and the cut was thin and scrappy, like a leftover end piece. And the third time it tasted so 'fishy' it was barely edible, we ended up throwing most of it away. So now we've given up. I'm prepared to believe the owners are very friendly, but I've never been served by them, only by younger workers whose service is perfunctory at best. I've been so disappointed that even though I live just a mile from here (and love the 4&20 Blackbirds bakery nearby), I find I am driving to nearby towns to buy much better product, with a better experience all round. read more

the starfish market could be just a reason to live in guilford. on top of the excellent seafood, they feature the best imported cheese selection, not to mention clarified butter and many other goods. we have been shopping there for years and have not once been disappointed with products or the service. if you really look at the prices and compare it with the large stores' you will not see a great difference. but the quality you will notice immediately. we don't mind if they sometimes don't have a certain kind of fresh fish because they care and don't sell you smelly junk like at BigY or StopAndShop etc. the owners, who are always present, as well as the other personnel are friendly and know their business. read more

The shop being open only Tues. through Sat. shows me the owners really care about quality and freshness of their seafood (no one can receive fresh fish on Monday and Sunday). This mom and pop shop run by Mike and Colette Lukas is a real New England gem. They are there everyday with the knowledge and expertise of the preparation and sauce pairings of each item. Fresh Bread, European Cheeses, Gourmet Groceries, Salads, Shellfish, LIVE LOBSTERS ect. are also available at this boutique seafood market. I had heard about this store from locals after moving to Guilford several years ago and they had praised the quality of its fish. Today I called to place a holiday order for a large quantity of fresh caught/non-farm-raised shrimp and asked the person who took my call if they carried such shrimp. I stressed that my goal is to eliminate any fish that was potentially exposed to antibiotics, chemical contaminants and/or hormones, as is usually the case. The employee of the market said they carried "wild caught" shrimp in the large size but that the extra large size product is farm raised in Vietnam--which has been cited in product safety studies as providing shrimp to the US market that is raised in a toxic stew of polluted water (feces from fish), antibiotics and hormones, in other words--not the kind of fish I want or a careful consumer would likely want to eat or serve to one's guests. I asked him where the large sized "wild caught" shrimp a was from and he asked a co-worker offline--but still quite audibly--where that product was from, making clear by his tone of voice and snickering that I was some sort of idiot food-Nazi who was weird for even asking these questions about their stock. His co-worker seemed to think it was amusing as well. You could practically see their eyes rolling n their heads from the tones and snickering. When the person came back on the line I informed him that I had overheard his comments and tone of voice and was not interested in being a customer of a market which thought so little of a consumer asking informed questions regarding the safety, cleanliness and quality of their products, especially a product so notorious for these contaminants an chemicals in Third World suppliers in places like Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines where so much of the US shrimp supply is now purchased. I wouldn't set foot in Star Fish Market. Clearly they think that having only the finest and safest fish products for sale to their customers is a laughing matter. A truly quality market would be proud to answer my questions and would have staff intelligent enough to know something about their merchandise which this twit clearly did not. read more
