Went to a Book club meeting at the downtown location this morning and had a delightful experience!…read moreReally can't wait to go again. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich with fries, as did every other member of my group! It was exceptional. I think they have something magical that they put on top of that fried chicken just sort of sweet and delicious. We also ordered the little donuts and they were fried delicious nuggets of yumminess. I definitely want to go back.

DAIRY ALLERGY MISHANDLED -- WAITER LIED ABOUT CHECKING WITH THE KITCHEN…read more My girlfriend has a serious dairy allergy. Before she arrived, I spent time with our waiter going through the menu carefully -- no butter, no dairy, confirmed twice. He even went back to check with the kitchen and returned saying her meal was completely dairy free. It wasn't. Someone else at the table tasted the green beans and suspected butter. When I asked again, the waiter confirmed they'd been cooked in oil and butter -- after already telling us they were safe. By then the pork chop had been sitting on top of them and was contaminated. His response? "I can bring you another side." No offer to replace the meal. No offer to remove it from the check. Nothing. We had a show to catch at the Magenta Theater and no time to push it, so my girlfriend skipped dinner and grabbed something at Burgerville afterward -- she had a headache by the end of the show. The food and everything else about the evening was genuinely good. But between the false assurance, the contaminated meal, and the complete absence of any effort to make it right, I can't recommend this restaurant to anyone managing a food allergy -- and I'll be thinking hard before coming back myself.

Driven past this spot for years. Finally decided to give it a try…read more Not totally what we were expecting. Parking is a little awkward as you park on the side of the road. Walked in to a pretty tiny bar with a very few tables. Half a dozen video poker machines. There is a covered patio. It was pretty cold and one table had multiple smokers. Some ganja was being consumed also. Ate inside. Fairly noisy, however it is a small bar. They have daily specials, today being smoked brisket. Meal came. Brisket was pretty good. Tender though not real smoky. Small corn cob was pretty soft from overcooking. Scalloped potatoes were OK. Just seemed like sliced potatoes with cheese melted on them in the microwave. Toast was fine. Extreme small kitchen. Surprised they can put out so much food from such a tiny area. Service was good and friendly. Definitely a locals hangout Some aspects were fine for what this place is. The smoking policy, which I assume is condoned lost one star automatically

This spot offers an unexpected menu with everything from steaks, seafood, chicken, sandwiches and more. One of my new favorites is their French dip. So good! Everything we've order has been delicious. Everything is flavorful, well prepared, and served fresh and hot. On nights that they offer seafood or other "special" items it's a limited amount so they'll run out of some things pretty early. Get there for an early dinner if you can. Service is a little hit and miss. We've been in on days that our server was amazing and super friendly and other days that a server barely glanced our direction and never even came to our table. I think a couple of them really focus on their known regulars and less on people they don't immediately recognize. It's a very small dining area with limited seating but there are a few tables outside in a covered area as well. Several video poker machines are available if that's your thing. There's lots of parking, just be careful on your stroll to the door along Hwy 224. Cars are moving fast and focused on making the light more than where you might be walking on the side of the road. It's even a little more sketchy when the summer rafter start hitting the area. Overall, excellent food can be found here and is totally worth checking out. They also have a Facebook page, that I just discovered, that highlights their food offering from day to day. Give it a try!

Do you enjoy authentic Italian food?…read more Do you struggle coming up with a good reason to drop some cash on a special dinner experience? Then do what my wife and I did and create your own celebration. In our case, we decided to celebrate friendship, by inviting two of our closest friends who have been working so hard dealing with the various things that life can throw at you, to share a special dinner with us at Nostrana. They deserved some pampering and we all deserved a night of food, wine, and warm conversation, the kind that comes easily for people who have known each other for years. And what better place to do this than at Nostrana in Portland? Read about this place before you go! The chef owner has a very interesting and impressive story, and the chefs who perform their kitchen magic nightly did a memorable job! So good! I, unfortunately, forgot to take a picture of the menu and may be unable to identify the photos I post here. Sorry about that! We did go on a Thursday, which means it was "pasta day" or rather in our case, "gnocchi day." Yay! This follows tradition as this is the same Thursday fare in Italy. We all began our feast with a glass of what Nostrana calls the, "quintissential Negroni." So tasty! We shared a couple of antipasti dishes and a couple of salads. Oh, and we shared an order of gnocchi, too. Then we each ordered our own secondi dishes. I ordered the grilled beef tagliata (flat iron steak) and it was cooked to perfection! To assist with this flavor bomb I ordered a glass of the Langhe Nebbiolo. (My mouth is watering just thinking about it. A perfect pairing!) We had a wonderful dessert, the name of which escapes me. And yes, we had leftovers to take home. We did not leave hungry! I did take a risk and order a side dish (contorni) that I think was called something like "whipped fat". I found this to not have much flavor. I was expecting it to have some meaty or steak flavor perhaps, but it was delivered as ordered and I can't fault the restaurant if I didn't like it. I'm going to drum up another reason to celebrate so we can return to the Nostrana. The chefs should be very proud of what they fed us that night! Thank you!

So I decided to just get to pork carnitas tacos 3 for $10.00. I brought them home and tried them out.. I put some of the orange sauce they gave me on it and it was very runny with no taste to it. They out a lot of meat on the tacos and they don't taste too bad either. My only suggestion is to put some cumin on your pork so it does not taste so wild or porky tasting. Other than it was not too bad at all. Oh and the red hot sauce is really spicey and delicious so if you like spicy get that one. I wanna go back and try their breakfast burrito sometime.

8.5 /10 first experience…read more I usually don't divulge to PNW folks that I'm from CA lol but for this review it has to be known. Anyway Mexican food up here in the PNW is trash. It's not authentic by any means. I feel like they just cater to the demographic. I was in BG area and actually had cash on me so I pulled over to give them a try. This is the first spot that I've found to even be on the radar with back home quality. 1) they lightly toasted the the tortilla. 2) the meat was cut on the bias, thin, tender and full of flavor!! If they let it crisp up just a little more it would be next level. 3) they used real avocado slices not that nasty premade spread that has vinegar to preserve the color. Overall my burrito was delicious and it was filled great, equal beans/rice/meat ratio. Ps i ordered it without lettuce. I will absolutely be coming back to try tacos and other items. Review for salsas: I tried one of each (habanero, red and green). My favorite was the verde. It's the most flavorful. I usually like hot, hot, but won't compromise flavor. I would stick to the verde no matter what I order. I like that there's grassy patches. While I was waiting I was able to let my dog stretch her legs until the buzzer went off. The lady in the food truck was helpful and told me they have habanero as an option.
