Two stars only because the waitress was extremely sweet but would rate it zero if I could...wow the prices here for the size and quality aren't correlating. I ordered two beef crunchy tacos that were literally Taco Bell size and honestly worse quality than Taco Bell and it was 14.00$.... I understand Ma and Pa places need to make their coin as well, but this is just a blatant rip off. You cannot sustain a satisfied customer base with prices like that with the quality that you are serving. I'd recommend going down to Taco Bell and getting a 7$ box so you'll actually be full when you're done eating. read more

Dingy, dark and confusing and that's just the food...lol...jokes aside, I tried to order 3 different things but apparently the only meat option they had was ground beef so I went with a burrito, and when I asked if I could add sour cream and guac to drown out a sad ground beef burrito, they told me I couldn't because the burrito wouldn't be good anymore after they "heated it up" with that inside. After seeing another order of what were supposed to be nachos but looked like microwaved shredded cheese on stale chips come out, we cancelled and walked out....the staff couldn't have cared less. I almost passed on this spot because of the Negative Reviews -Im so glad I didnt. We went on the recommendation of friends as this little spot has been a Vancouver Staple for over 50 years.. indoors it has all you would want a little hole in the wall to be, just a few tables and big menu, Modello's! Chips and Salsa and Sour Cream came out first, Salsa was great, if its to spicy for you , you can tone it down with some sour cream...We opted for the Beef Enchilada plate and had to try the famous Cono Taco.. plate size was just right, the Enchilada sauce was sooo good, almost like a light chili, we will definitely order again - the Cono Taco was a great addition - packed full of well seasoned ground beef, cheese, lettuce and onion with a tomato on top! Bring Cash as they dont take Debit... however they do take checks. (if you still have those haha). I get it though, small businesses pay for each swipe and Im sure they want to keep pricing low. This was the worst food I have had since I moved to Vancouver 2 years ago. I wouldn't have fed that to my worst enemy. That was worse than hostage food. I would have rather have got on one knee and begged for Taco Bell to get out of eating that food. I would have eaten week old Little Caesar's pizza that a dog had licked over that food / or a mushed up hamburger from McDonalds covered in vinaigrette dressing / I would have eaten a whole bowl of damn Gorgonzola cheese over that meal. The only meat options were ground beef - which tasted like week old over cooked dog food. The nachos had hard tasteless cheese melted in patches. When we asked to add avocado in the burrito she said no because when they put it in the microwave it will get really hot. Somewhere Gordon Ramsay just spit over that sentence. I would personally like to call every 4 star review on here and offer to cook for them - to show them what good food is. Holy hell. If I can save one soul off this review, it was worth it. It's fast food. Not impressive. Only 6 tables, it's a tiny place - literally a hole in the wall. THEY ONLY TAKE CASH. They do not have an ATM. Don't say yes to chips & salsa, unless you want to pay for it. What?, that's not a complimentary thing? Maybe they should let people know that. Best food everrrrrr! We have been going to The Villa (as we call it) for well over 30 years. I live in Portland and will make the drive to go eat here. I came here the first time and was impressed. They have cheese enchiladas dialed in. Excellent red enchilada sauce. Another time I tried beef enchiladas, and they were good as well, same great enchilada sauce so how could you go wrong. It's a tangy, tex-mex style "chile gravy" seems like there is tomato in there too but not sure. The "cono" tacos are pretty good too, fresh very crunchy corn shell, pretty good mild beef filling. They came with some enchilada sauce on the side, which I liked. But a few issues - the salsa is incredibly hot. I don't eat food as spicy as I used to, but I'm pretty tolerant of the caliente. No, this salsa is unpleasant - no good with chips, it hurts. A few drops on your enchilada I can see, but as an appetizer (chips and salsa are a couple of bucks) I did not enjoy. They provide sour cream with the salsa, perhaps to dull the pain, but it wasn't my favorite dish. My theory (see below re: service) is they do this to keep people from eating too much of it, but who knows. I was surprised, this level of extreme ghost-pepper hot is not normal in tex-mex restaurants. Service is not great, it's okay but not super welcoming, explanatory, or anything really, same thru several visits. It seems like they may be more friendly to regulars. Or maybe just less irritated. Mexican Villa has a long string of loyal customers, some coming every day, for simple, delicious, filling food. They just celebrated their fortieth anniversary in the same spot, and the long-time fans will tell you that it's the best Mexican food they know of. So why are their no reviews on Yelp yet? I can take a few guesses: Location: Strip mall. Decor: faded. Tables: 6. Credit? Nope. Free chips!? Sadly, no. There's something else that deserves more attention though: Mexican Villa's most loyal customers are largely what you might call "older folks." They've been coming here for their whole lives, and they remember a time when Vancouver didn't really have any Mexican food. So what they're used to is something I like to call, "Northwest Mexican:" soupy plates covered in lots of cheddar cheese, and food that is essentially bland... ...but there's a catch. The food at Mexican Villa is a little bland (you can spice it up, however, with the hot sauce and sour cream found on every table) but that's because it's real food. The beans, imagine if you will, taste like beans! The beef tastes like beef! The guacamole is made from avocados... real ones! I've read reviews elsewhere that say you can get a better taco at Jack-in-the- Box, but what you get at many other places is something that's been spiced up to disguise the fact that it's tofu and filler, or food that contains so many ingredients that you can't tell the quality, because all you're tasting is lime-juice, cumin and peppers. The food here tastes like what it is. How do I know this? Well, another complaint I've seen about The Villa is that it comes from a time before a lot of Latinos moved here. That, of course, would've been some time in the eighteen-hundreds but it's not the point. It's not the point because the owners of the restaurant are Latinos who moved here, and the man who would cook your food today is the same man who opened the place. The waitresses are his wife, daughters and granddaughters. You want to go tell them their food isn't real Mexican? Be my guest. This place isn't Mexican-Haute Cuisine. No one will light a Spanish coffee on fire for you, or grill you a Patagonian tooth-fish, but they will welcome you with a genuine smile. This is real food that will fill you up and put you to sleep. The Villa isn't so much a restaurant as it is a Vancouver landmark. It's not for everyone, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you lived here and never saw what they had to offer. There is just something they do that makes this place special. I always pick the #1 combination which is two beef tacos with rice and beans. The ground beef, the way they season it with a soft shell taco is as close to heaven as you can get on earth. I have had good taco's in Tuscon, AZ that were close. However, I am always disappointed with all other Mexican restaurants. I am so feed up with poor tacos everywhere else that I usually go for enchiladas just to keep myself from comparing other restaurants to the Mexican Villa. If you go here, just remember that there is very little seating room. This place has been here for around 30 years and they don't expand. They have a dedicated clientele. However, you will feel welcome when you walk in. Be a regular and just find the first open table. I will eat in the car if necessary just to enjoy the food. Many, many times I've gone in with the hopes of Yelping. And believe me, mentally I go in prepared. -Notice ambiance: check -Order food: check -Observe staff interaction: check -Take picture of food: eh....that's where I completely forget about Yelp. My taste buds take over at the excitement of the deliciousness that is Cono Tacos as it's set before me. Tacos are immediately consumed. Usually while I try to finish my 3rd one, I think to myself 'I really need to review this place.' Oh wait, wasn't that my initial plan? ::insert facepalm:: But I digress. Not sure what it is about these tacos, whether it's the ice cream cone shape which holds in the last bits of finely ground and amazingly seasoned, hefty amounts of meat or just the meat itself, that just so happens to be in held in a cone shape but I love them. I crave them. You say we're going to Vancouver? I say we hit Mexican Villa! We always start off with chips, salsa and sour cream, as is customary for a munchie while you decide your order. They come in large plastic condiment bottles and always full and with 2 small cups for dipping. We've never waited an extended time to order or receive our food. The staff has always been friendly, accommodating and just plain pleasant. We've come in a half hour before close while they are prepping as much as they can to close and they have never made us feel unwelcome or uncomfortable. I've had a few other dishes such as the chili rellano, burrito and enchiladas but my go to is always the tacos. There is the eternal 'patent pending' sign and I don't blame them. Patent that sh**! You've got a good thing going. It's cash only, and gets pretty busy mid day on Saturdays, they aren't open on Sundays and this place proves that good food can be affordable. At $2.25 (if I remember correctly) a taco, you should at least give them a shot. read more

After hearing how good the food was I was stunned when I actually got to try it for myself. The food basically tasted like very cheap fast food that had just been covered in store-bought sauce and tasteless cheese...picture a few Taco Time items thrown on a plate and then drenched in cheap canned sauce and that's pretty close to what we got. Now add to that the fact that the prices were up there with what one would expect from a decent restaurant and we basically left feeling ripped off. Now I have to say that I am still astounded at how many glowing reviews this place gets so maybe, just maybe, we went on an off night? Maybe the good folks who NORMALLY prepare the food were away and someone else less capable was cooking on that particular occasion? I acknowledge that this is entirely possible. I have definitely experienced an off-night now and then with restaurants that I know to be good most of the time. I don't know what to think. I would like to give the place another try in order to see if my experience was indeed not typical but the only way I'll chance that is if someone else is buying my dinner and really wants to go to Mexican Villa. I ordered one chicken enchilada and one beef enchilada with a Pepsi which was small and so where the enchiladas. The cost was $15 and some change! Which I thought was a little steep. The enchiladas had way to much cheese on them and not enough meet in the inside. They brought me chips that tasted stale and differently not fresh. Oh and for the chips, instead of bringing me salsa like most Mexican restaurants do they brought me hot sauce and sour cream. Needless to say I was not impressed. So good! It's a small hole in the wall, but usually those types of Mexican restaurants make the best food. Everyone I talk to about Mexican food in the area is very picky, yet Vancouver & Portland have very, very little good Mexican options anywhere. It's not the world's greatest but around here this is one of the best. Remember to bring cash or check, as they don't take cards. But don't let that stop you. It was delicious and the portions were just right. Tacos were cooked just right with crispy shells. Good meat, nice toppings. Usually I don't write about the chips and salsa but that was one of the best parts of the meal, not to diminish the tacos, beans, and rice. Super friendly service. The prices were just right, too!
