You could tell this was a very casual event and fortunately most people finished their meal before the two performers began, but there was still some paper rustling and chip crunching so maybe quieter food in quieter packaging would help in the future ;) I loved how before the performance the garage door style wall was up so we had plenty of fresh air and light, and I was impressed with the screen image of curtains on the stage which as you can see in the pictures, really gave an excellent trompe l'oeil effect! On January 28, 2026, Sam Krausz (tenor),Yichen Xue (baritone), and Wan-Ting Yu (pianist) were all superb, and Yichen Xue was a real hoot as he really got into his role in the Così fan tutte piece where he is trying to convince a woman that he is the best man for her so he flexed his muscles and mimed reading a book, and showed how he could dance and sing. Not all pieces had adequate introductory information which was too bad as it is crucial since there were no projected subtitles as we had hoped. The online program just listed the songs and which opera they were from, but didn't even give an English translation or any helpful context for the song, so I think that should be considered for the future. It would also be a great encouragement to attend their big production if they could have one piece from it, even if it's just some piano music to tease people into attending. Perhaps they could also offer a little perk like a 1/2 price drink at Symphony Hall if you show you attended the Opera for Lunch production. Cultivating new patrons with little perks is always a good idea.

I appreciated how they had multiple sign language interpreters, as well as overhead subitites in English and Spanish. My daughter had a lovely time and enjoyed the show. She said she enjoyed hearing the singing and the opera singers really do have amazing voices. Before and after the show there is a crafts activity. For this year they had a decorate your own hand drum and there was also a goody bag to take back which had a sweet treat, a music toy, lanyard and a few small fidget toys. The only negative is that there might be a lot of road closures if another event is going on downtown and the parking lot is a little small so it can fill up easily.

We've been watching Hoop Therapist on Instagram and thought maybe we could do hooping lessons, so I did a local search to see if there were any instructors that could teach a gaggle of 9-10 year olds. Luckily, I found Melly Jean! She was helpful with the planning and letting me know what to expect on party day, and was thankfully proactive in gathering info she needed from me. I created a party playlist of my daugther's favorite songs, which Melly played for the kids, and I had her make a custom weighted hoop for my daugther (which she LOVES). I did the 2-hour lesson timeslot at a local park/playground, which in hindsight was probably too long, given the (lack of) attention span, even from girls who are used to taking sports instruction everyday. I do think if the lesson had maybe been indoors with less distraction of a playground they would have paid more attention after an hour, so if you have kids under 12 years, I think 1-1.5 hours is all the attention you'll probably get out of them unless they are in a classroom setting like a dance studio or gym. Melly was *super patient* with the kids and worked around their various attention spans. I (and some other moms) tried our hand at hooping and it was really fun. I appreciate how hard some of the skills are now after trying them myself. My daugther has been practicing her hooping skills almost everyday since the party. I highly recommend Melly Jean for any kind of event. I think it would be a fun adult party as well.

Our children got to dance with Linda that night. Since both children enjoyed it, we were thrilled to hear she taught children's classes on Saturday mornings. When I called Linda to arrange for private classes, I was very surprised to hear how reasonable her prices are. Based on my experience with private ballroom dance lessons, I was expecting to pay twice as much as she quoted me. My daughter and I started taking classes together in September and we are enjoying learning something together. We are getting more than what we pay for. Linda is quite obviously not only a professional, but talented and passionate about her art. Her ability to teach both of us at the same time is exceptional, especially given the difference in our attention spans. Both my daughter and I leave every week feeling like we had a good time, and find that we are progressing as well.
