@Chris, thought to give it another chance, it looks like the deep cleaning is still on your bucket list. Sad to see the state of this gym. I'd much rather climb here than have to drive an extra 40 minutes to BP. But if cleanliness is a sign of neglect and it's neglected, then one wonders what else is being put off. I did notice however the bathrooms were clean, the floor under the Auto-Belays was nice and vacuumed. They were multiple chalk eaters around the gym doing work. Perhaps things are headed in the right direction and the challenge of having an establishment where chalk is constantly in use is a tough one. Went on Memorial Day and they had a $20 day pass special with gear! Very nice. You watch a short video and practice a fall and then you're good to go. There is a nice bouldering wall and many automatic belay climbing routes. There are also routes dedicated just for those who are trained in the manual belay. The gym wasn't too busy where we didn't have to wait to climb, which I appreciated. There is also an upstairs with some gym equipment and another bouldering wall. And some other unique stuff like a ninja ladder thing and a rock wall where you can position the angle yourself (I didn't explain this well, sorry. Youll have to check it out to see what I mean). This is our home climbing gym. There is a variety of climbing ranging from bouldering, top roping, lead climbing, and crack climbing. There is some gym equipment available to do weights and pull ups as well as a small ninja section. The sport climbs are graded by color. There are gecko stickers. Green is the easiest, then yellow, red, blue, purple then black. The 5.9 +\- are yellow. Red 5.10 +\-. They "feel" harder sometimes because they want to be sure you can really climb that grade when you climb outside. There are a lot of auto belays available, probably the most I have seen in a gym, aside from Alta Climbing Gym. I used to be scared at first to use them, but now I love them for training. It prevents me from being tempted to "hang" on the rope while climbing. I can't be "lazy" when I use them. It's also useful if you don't have someone to belay you. There are kids programs like climbing camps and training available. This gym is super family friendly and encourage it. The aerial yoga classes with Arona are amazing! There are twinkling lights in the ceiling, which make me want to stay there forever! The first Friday of every month, there is Gecko Glow which is fun because they turn out all the lights and blast colorful lights on the wall. It makes it fun yet tricker to climb. read more

I picked this place over a couple others that were closer to me purely on a gut feeling and good marketing. It looked like they were the most family-friendly of the options for a weekday summer adventure with two novice teenage climbers. Reader, I made really good choices today. This is definitely a place where everyone can be comfortable. Lots of summer camps going on, but several serious climbers coming in on their lunch hour too. The staff is extremely friendly and gave us a quick but very thorough orientation. Of note: one of my young climbers got a little out of control on a descent and was worried that the auto-belay device was malfunctioning. When he approached a staff member about it, the gentleman took a lot of time to first check the device out, and then review the video of the descent to try to see what happened. He gave the young climber a really thorough explanation of how the device works (in the most delightfully nerdy physics teacher kind of way) and also pointed out other factors in the video that were making the climber feel out of control (the device was working properly but he reset it anyhow to provide more confidence). My kid was embarrassed but the staff member was so kind and patient that the incident was forgotten almost immediately. Thank you, nice man whose name I didn't catch! As far as the facility, about half the tall wall area is auto-belay, so it was very easy for the kids to get going right away without having to worry about the added stress of learning to belay. Nice bouldering area with varying difficulty levels. Lots of top-rope and lead climbing options. They were changing out one of the routes while we were there, so clearly they rotate things to keep it interesting. There were also a couple really cool pieces of climbing fitness equipment that I think I will try out next time we go. And yes, there will be a next time. I came across Gecko while looking for gyms close to the USAA building for some team building/ small class exercise options. The gym is located in between Happy Valley and Pinnacle Peak, on 19th ave. Instead of jumping right into climbing for our first time there, we decided to take the aerial yoga class. The aerial yoga was in its own room, with about 8 silks/fabrics. My friend and I ended up being the only ones in the class and our instructor Stephanye was incredibly nice, patient, and really led us through a beautiful practice. There is a combination of floor work and work in the fabric. Just like with any yoga practice, you can do as much as you like and try new things to push yourself, or modify as needed. Stephanye gave us a lot of great variation options. Had I ever done this type of yoga before? No. Did this class make me want to do it again? Absolutely !!! It was so fun and freeing and the support of the silks help me do poses that I can't do in regular yoga or hot yoga classes. Do you already have to have super strong upper body and abs? Nope, although I could see how this yoga might be intimidating but just hop in and swing into it, you'll surprise yourself how much you can do!! Why four instead of five stars if we had so much fun and got such a good workout? The one time pass for a 60 min class was $30, which is a little pricey but if you get a membership, the regular yoga classes and climbing are included and the aerial yoga is only a couple dollars instead. Trying to find a home gym here in Phoenix and that led me to Gecko. I can safely say this place is not it. Came in on a Friday and it looked like it had a few birthday parties (or one large one) that kept staff pretty busy. Totally get that. After taking our orientation and belay test, we were able to get on the wall. The gym itself seems new in that the walls and holds are all really nice and clean. I will say that each of the routes myself and my friends tried was just super awkward in terms of flow and just was not a fun experience at all. On top of that, there were a couple of gri gris that were set up on the wrong side of the rope (wall side). This is a safety issue to reduce twisting, friction, and wear and tear on the rope. After alerting staff and asking for a key to just switch the gri gri to the other rope, they responded by very flippantly cutting me off and saying "it's fine" several times and to just climb the route as is. The combination of the route experience and the off putting staff, I'm gonna pass on coming back. read more

Great rock climbing gym, for both adults and kids. We came for a kids birthday party and it was fantastic. There is a room you can rent out for a birthday party, and the rental rate includes two staff members to explain rock climbing to the kids and adults, and to help provide instruction and guidance to all during the reserved period. For kids, there is a small rock climbing wall that leads to a slide so the kids can slide down. Adjacent to the slide, there is a rock climbing wall with a bunch of automatic belays, so you can attach the clip to the harness, the kids can climb, and when they want to come down, they just let go and the system auto-belays down. Highly recommend this gym for climbing in general, but specifically to expose kids to climbing. read more

I LOVE IT!!!!!!! The coaches are fantastic. Christian, CJ and the rest of the team always keep my girls wanting to come back. My daughters are in there a minimum of three times a week. They really enjoy being challenged on Black Geckos and are constantly encouraged by everyone in there. The owner is an upstanding man who cares about the employees and guests very much. All around horrible experience. In-town visiting so came for a day-pass, which is $25 dollars.. the gym was pretty small so that price seems very high. I came mid-day on a weekday and there was a kids team who completly take over the gym. I came at this time to avoid crowds so to have out of control kids running around was quit irritating. Anytime I'd go to get on a boulder problem or an auto belay they would go in front of me or under me. No organization to the team at all and no one really watching the kids as they ran around and did what they wanted without regard for others in the gym. On-top of that the route setting was pretty bad. Not flowy, stiff grading, and honestly just not fun. I've climbed all over the country and internationally in gyms and outside and this has been my least favorite gym experience by far. I can respect stiff grading in a gym but when a 12 climber is having a bad/difficult time getting up a 10, something seems off. They also have a very confusing color grading system. Positives: Everything was clean and they do have good variety of equipment. They do a good job with intro video and explaining how auto belays work. Overall I would not go back to this gym. read more

Along one side is bouldering and along the other side is top rope/auto-belay (which is split 50/50). Perhaps it was the time of day we were there, it was more kids than adults. My family loves this place!! I'm obsessed and can't get enough, I was going everyday then paused my membership when I was pregnant and recovering but came back yesterday after 13 months and I was welcomed back with the excitement, kindness, and generosity I remember feeling before. I bought a pair of gomi's and I couldn't be happier with my new shoe purchase. Chris, the owner, helped me find the right fit and he and his staff have always been super helpful and informative. I couldn't wait to get on the wall; I climbed until my arms couldn't hold me anymore. It was great to be back, I went to pick up my daughter from school and came right back - I couldn't get enough! My daughter (3 yrs old) loves climbing up and sliding down the slide, coloring in coloring books at the table, then back to climbing with all the other kids. It's a great after school sport and a healthy outlet that promotes self confidence, bravery, determination, respect, and dexterity. read more

I feel bad saying this because it's family owned, but this is one of the most disappointing gyms I've ever been to. The bouldering area is tiny and the setting is SO bad. Zero flow. Some problems just sort of end in the middle of the wall? Like I literally could not find a next hold. Also, they try to use a v scale system that makes no sense because the colored geckos don't correspond to the colors of the holds and are also incredibly hard to see. Inexplicably, 2/3 of the problems had no grading at all and the teen manning the front desk just sort of waved her hand around and said "that one's probably an easy one." Paying $25 for a day pass is absurd. I've paid less in the Bay Area for a gym four times the size with six times the number of bouldering problems. I get the sense this place is more of a family fun center on weekends than any sort of serious climbing gym. And judging by the near-emptiness on a weeknight, it appears others agree with me. I've never seen a gym that empty at 7 pm during the week. I'd be surprised if this place makes it two more years. Two stars because it was clean and had easy parking. read more

It was a really hot hot day... took my grandchildren, 13 and 10 to Gecko... it was AMAZING!! 11,000 sq ft of climbing walls! All different levels of challenge. Not only was it a physical activity but, also a great brain workout. Gecko is for all ages. The staff is great! They were very helpful and willing to answer a million questions.... Grandma had many.. LOL. My grandkids had a great time and can't wait to go back again. The cost for rental of special climbing shoes and harness plus fee for using the climbing walls was around $25.00 per child... now you may say that's a lot but, the kids could climb as long as they wanted that day. I would suggest you or your children, whoever is climbing, to use climbing gloves or chalk... they do sell this at Gecko. Definitely GO...to Gecko.... read more

Gecko Climbing Gym is the place to go for climbers in the Phoenix area. To start, it is a very community based gym which I love. If you go in a couple of times a week, then you get to know the staff and other members well. They have multiple events they advertise to just have fun which is what climbing is all about! I am big into getting people into climbing. I've taken brand new climbers here and other friends who have been climbing 5+ years. There are routes for everyone. I've checked out a couple of the surrounding gyms and I noticed the other ones grade a bit softer/inconsistent. Which is totally fine I mean at the end of the day if you get up there and have fun then that's all that matters. That being said, Gecko grades very fairly. If I climb a 5.10 at Gecko, then I feel pretty comfortable doing something similar outside. My home base is in the Yosemite area and I can't wait to go home and try out my new techniques. I have only been climbing here since the end of January and I've already noticed an immense change in my foot technique, confidence, strength etc. I've taken private lessons as well as a group lead class here. They were major learning opportunities and I feel very prepared to do it on my own. The coaches make sure that you are comfortable and confident in your abilities before sending you off on your own. They also have a deal with Granite Mountain Guides for their outdoor classes! All in all it's a gym for everyone no matter where you stand as a climber. If you're like me, a bit of an intermediate climber looking to get stronger/more technical, and have the resources to be able to transition to the outdoors, then this is the place to do it. read more

Great gym! Very modern style and setting. Routes are marked by color, and there is a reasonable mark up between grades. The route difficulties are marked by cute colored gecko tags. The gym building itself is one long corridor. Viewing the gym from the front, the bouldering section is on the left side and the roped climbing is all on the right, with some workout and training equipment at the end of the gym. I only had around an hour to stop by and climb this time around, but I'd love to come back whenever I'm in town. read more

This is a climbing gym for children. If you have a typical 9-5 job, good luck trying to climb here. Team practices run from 4PM until the gym closes every weekday, and weekend days are often booked with birthday parties or events. The gym staff, while friendly, are inattentive, and allow kids to run around underneath roped and unroped climbers, monopolize topropes and autobelays, and don't ensure parents are paying attention to their children during events. Entire sections of the gym are routinely cordoned off for team practices, but the teams are free to climb outside the barricades, so finding available routes can be extremely difficult. I have serious reservations about the lack of safety consciousness between this gym's community and staff. I've seen more injury near-misses in the one year I've been a member of this gym than in the 20+ years of climbing before. Every climbing session, I wonder to myself "is this the day I see someone fall on a kid, or tie in wrong?" Memberships at Gecko cost up to 2x more than competing gyms in the Phoenix area. (One year membership for an adult couple at Gecko is $1400. At PRG a one year membership for two adults is $645) The straw that broke the camel's back for me was trying to climb before a recent competition (for kids only). After leaving work early, and arriving at about 4:30, almost the entire gym was stripped. One of the staff informed us the remaing areas were going to be reserved for team practice starting at 5. While we weren't explicitly asked to leave, the implication was clear. I'm extremely disappointed in my overall experience at this gym, and am allowing my membership to expire. We won't be heading back to Gecko :( read more

I got a membership before Gecko even opened because it was close to work. And I got to say I have no regrets! It is a smaller gym, but they set new problems about every other week, so there is always something new to try. They have a great range of difficulty so there's always something to challenge you, and the Kilter board means there are nearly endless options. The staff is great. Just today I wanted to add my brother onto my membership and they got it figured out even though I was in the middle of a pay period. They even credited me the time I had left. We went there for the first time as a homeschool co op. The staff was super nice and welcoming and patient with the training as we got our kids harnessed and understanding how to be safe. My oldest was nervous at first but by the end neither kid wanted to leave. Highly recommend! They also made a point to try to learn our names and make sure we were having fun. My son attended the summer camp and absolutely loved it! He had so much fun learning about climbing and bouldering. He now has a new hobby! He enjoyed all of the activities they offered in the camp. He was never bored and couldn't wait to go back. The facility itself is clean, organized, and has so much to offer with all of the different rock walls that allow for beginners to pros.
