After a private viewing at the Royal Academy the other evening, my friend and I were looking for a bite to eat in the area and wandered no further than Fortnum & Mason across the street, or specifically, its restaurant behind the main store. The décor is upscale without being too stuffy, with the walls decked in the Fortnum & Mason light blue and a very vivid coral red seating in well-spaced semi-circular booths. We both agreed that this would be a nice place to take the parents when they're in town, as it's not too loud and you can hear people talk from across the table, and the booths provide a little bit of privacy in an otherwise very crowded London. That said, the prices are reasonable and it's not quite white tablecloth so it doesn't feel too stuffy. As for the menu, I hadn't quite done my research so I didn't know what they are known for, but we got with the burrata and aubergine starter to share then both ordered the full size lobster spätzle for the main. There's also not much by way of description on the menu, but the burrata and aubergine was exactly as it sounds, and the lobster spätzle was served with a creamy sauce and I'm not sure what happened to those seashore vegetables also mentioned as part of the dish. I've certainly never seen a dish like it on a London menu before and I would definitely order it again. I was very happy with both dishes, though in hindsight we both wished we went for the half portion of spätzle because the waitress had described the half as just "one handful" but the main was probably the equivalent of three or four. The rest of the menu is quite traditional, with the likes of dover sole, pork belly, gnocchi, etc. I saw a few of the flambes going on around us, where they wheel a cart out and cook it in front of you with flames. Seems like a sure way to have a memorable dinner! read more
