I'm from out of state and have brought my truck in here twice. Both times everything went great and the people were friendly and communicated well. They also could have easily had me replace some parts I thought might be bad for over $1500, but they said I could probably wait a while, so I only ended up paying them $30 for a separate inspection. January 2025 my daughter took her Ford Explorer in for a nail in a tire. While in the shop the technician filled out an unexpected estimate sheet on all the work that was felt needed to be done to the SUV. Mind you this same SUV had been gone over for safety prior to the school year exactly 1 month earlier on 12/23/24 by a friend and owner of a well respected auto shop in Excelsior MN outside of MPLS and was given a clean bill of health. The only complaints for the SUV was a known nail in the passenger front tire of which they charged an acceptable $26.99. What was "found" during the visit was the need to Remove and Replace both front lower Control Arms $986.32, Computerized 4 wheel alignment $159.95 and Remove and replace Valve Cover Gasket $757.88 for a total of $2093.27. We drove to Duluth and took the SUV to another auto shop and that shop was given the estimate sheet from 4th Street Auto as kind of a "cheat sheet" to guide them on what possibly needed to be repaired. After a full day of driving to and from Duluth and the expense of another car exam the final diagnosis was.....none of those suggested repairs were needed. I would personally suggest using caution if you are a young female student or anyone with no car knowledge taking your car in for repairs to this establishment. read more

So I brought my SUV in for a rough idle they said they were going to do a tune-up, so I thought that meant plugs and wires for $750 got the truck back right away started acting up they told me the tranny might be slipping the transmission was just rebuilt bring to where the tranny was done told me nope misfiring on cylinder 4 "no new pug wires" bought it back they did something with the plug wires work for bit still running rough they didn't fix the problem they couldn't find the problem or they got payed and didn't care anymore now a couple of months down the road the SUV really started act up bring it back for the same issue try to give this shop the benefit they do a new throttle body and fix a broken bolt on my manifold for $2145 me trusting them that was the problem guess what that's not the problem so I just have to eat the $2145 truck still running rough guess what they still don't know there head for there butts If I went to the doctor and said my leg is bothering me and I get put to sleep and wake back up and they fix my arm come on guys worst service ever if your looking for a shop I would tell you hard pass i spent $2900 for a rough idle problem and still have it read more

Tried this garage. Big disappointment . Had to book an appt. a week in advance. Fine. Dropped off at 8am per their request. Cool. Knew my Subaru A/C didn't work. Wanted a tune up, too. No call all day. Called them at 5pm. Was told the "tech" (mechanic) wasn't done. They close at 6pm. Ok. Guy called back at 5:30pm started reading a list of recommended services. I stopped his reading. I asked about A/C. Was told the whole HVAC unit needed to be replaced. He proceeded to continue with recommended service list. Stopped him. I asked what work had been performed? Oil change. So the "peace of mind" inspection was $70; A/C diagnostic $100; oil change $75. That was all that was performed in 8 hours. Now it's 5:45pm, gave him cr. card payment by phone because I have to walk a mile to get to garage. Get there by 6pm, get keys from him. Get in car and start it, but I pop hood to inspect engine. Oil dipstick was not inserted, laying on top of engine. Office closed up (it was a TH). No A/C unit, part had to be ordered. I don't do the replacement, uncomfortable with their diagnostic .Take my car to Subaru dealership to have it inspected. Hose leak. HVAC unit fine. Needless to say, won't return to 4th Street Auto, not even for gas at the adjacent station! read more

My son had his 94 Honda there to have a new head, header and timing kit installed. The bill was nearly $2800. They contacted him saying it ran and he needed to retrieve it due to the lot being redone. We paid the bill, went to start the car and it would not run. At that point it wasn't as imperative that the car be moved because the bill had been paid......... We were told it needed a new coil at that point. New coil installed, no go. Long to short, one decent thing they did was offer to have the car towed back to our home. As I have started to unravel what they did, I have found the rotor was improperly installed and the timing has slipped. I believe they ran the car, slipped the belt and pushed it out the door taking my sons money. I would not, under any circumstance, recommend these people work on anything you own mechanical. They will happily brag about and show you their very expensive cars, though. Important to note, all the parts were recommended by them as what was needed to get the car running. These people are liars and thieves. Avoid at all costs. read more

Worst experience ever! I brought my Corolla in for new tires so it would get around better in the snow, I also needed to have them put my new plates on the car. After asking a few questions he quoted me $900 for 4 new tires and $160 to put the license plate on (if they had problems). I said no, I'd put the license plate on myself then and asked him why the tires were so expensive becuase I know tires for my car aren't that expensive, he said Oh yes, tires are very expensive now adays. I left and called another company and they quoted by a good winter tire - mounted and balanced of 4 for $616. I had a male friend (I'm an older female) call then and asked them why they were charging me so much and we would come get the car and take it someplace else. Immediately the new price was dropped to $315 for 2 tires mounted and balanced. I said to go ahead but wish I hadn't - when I picked up the car they didn't even tell me where it was parked, the "brand new tire" was packed with snow just like the one's on the rear and when I went to drive it out of the parking lot it was no better on the snow than the one's that were on it. Now, I wonder if they even put new tires on and I will bring it to another shop to get it checked out. If I could give them a minus 1 star I would! read more

WORST PLACE TO EVER COME TO!!!!!! it's definitely not a place of help it's a place of not taking accountability for content damage an doesn't want to fix what they ruined!....So last Tuesday I brought my Mitsubishi endeavor 2011 to them because I found out I had 2 bad O2 Sensors. So I asked them to fix them as well as fix my two door windows that wouldnt roll down . Thursday I received a phone call stating my car was ready to be picked up i immediately got a ride to pick up my truck an 10 minutes later i Noticed my lights were still on an it was still running like shit... so I called them an they said to return the vehicle so they can look at it . i told them this is my only way of transportation an I work for the next 3 days after work I can drop it off. For those three days I drove my truck an there wasn't any new problems. now I dropped my truck off an 2 days later they called me an told me the sensors they put on were both bad ones an non active an the job is all done An ready to be picked up. TODAY. I pick up my truck let it run for a minute to make sure no lights were going to come on if it sounded worse, the same, or better. It seems okay an I drove maybe four blocks away my car starts to act up all over again I pull to the side an call them. While on the phone I rolled up my windows an turned on my AC so we can continue our conversation on why this keeps happening an my truck stalls!!!! Literally just goes dead! I turn it back on an boom it dies again!!!!!! My truck never acted like this ! I take very well care of my cars ! Make sure the maintenance is all up-to-date is out of date I get it checked out anytime a light comes on if there ever is anything or notification I get it checked out and fixed immediately! I am a single parent. This was my dream truck, so I make sure that my truck stays the way I got it! I paid almost $20,000 for my truck! And that's not including the aftermarket tires system, Apple CarPlay, all of that that I've had installed and let me not remind you everything was installed by a professional!!! now I hang up with the mechanic and go to explaining what is going on with literally tears running down my face due to the fact that my sons birthday is in a few days, and I am just not understanding why I am constantly coming back. I realize that the main person of the company was basically being rude to me because I was telling him they obviously did something wrong once again for the third time in front of customers and he got upset and told me that they can't do anything about it and I needed to leave! Because the problem that's happening now it has nothing to do with them. They never even touched anything close to what the problem was. now the problem he told me was my AC compressor is all locked up.... ????? Ummmmm little did they know I was just using my ac when I dropped it off to them !? I am not a mechanic, so I have no clue on how to sensors have anything to do with my AC compressor but I know for a fact that I have been back to them three times because of them messing up! And since this is something they did wrong again and I'm calling them out. I guess you can say in front of customers he proceeded to tell me there is nothing he can do and I needed to leave. And he goes on to tell me a metaphor as I walked out the door. " so you mean to tell me if I was a tire shop and I put a new tire on your car and you live off of my parking lot for five minutes. I noticed you have a flat tire and you returb to my shop few minutes later saying you have a flat tire, that I should just give you a new tire??" I turn around an said "Hell Fucking Yes! Excuse my language !" An walked out! Now my sons birtbday is In 3 days an I don't have a truck ! I gave these ppl $1500-$1800 for my truck to be given to me worse than when I brought it to them!?! I'm in tears as I write this now! I have no clue what to do or say! But I really hate that place!!!!! I was a college student in Duluth with a 2002 Mazda Protege that had every problem possible and Gary would always get my car in for repairs and was honest and thoughtful in his diagnostics. He goes above and beyond and one time a part was installed that turned out to be faulty, and I had already moved out of state but Gary honored the warranty and worked with another service station to replace the part. That said, I discovered less than a mile away an honest, dependable, efficient repair shop within walking distance of my home. No more going up to the mall and waiting, waiting.... Gary is as honest and trustworthy as any mechanic I've ever met. His crew, including Mike who's been there almost as long as Gary, are courteous,conscientious and capable. Gary always explains what absolutely needs to be done, what can be put off for a while and what not to worry about. For 35 years I've trusted him to take care of our cars and especially, if I'm out of town, to handle any emergency my wife might encounter. He now has his son working there so that makes 3 generations of a family business. The only caveat is; He is so popular that you need at least 2 weeks for a routine appointment.
