Where TF have I been?! Since bailing the past year on these runs, I had the opportunity to participate for the first time in March and again in April. SOOO MUCH FUN!!! Basically, it's like Amazing Race and Scavenger Hunt all in one! There are different stops around Carlsbad (some as far as a mile out), and the point is for you to go to as many stops and get raffle tickets. Usually about 10 checkpoints. Do: -Get there early! As in 5pm early for parking, check in, booth hopping, samples, and pictures. -Register online for extra tickets. Also, you get an email of the map. It's easier than writing all the stops down. -Buy the Adventure Run shirt for $20. You get extra raffle (and beer) tickets at each of the stops you get to. -Like their FB page as there is a secret word for the secret checkpoint. -Plan your route. Best advice is to go to the farthest checkpoint and make your way back! -Stay for the after-party! They raffle off some really good isht (like race entries, headlamps and shoes!!!!) YES! Just participated in one last month. How did I not know about this free running activity before? Free, fun, and not to mention you are also getting a great workout at your own pace. Found out about this on the interwebs (probably through Instagram or something like that) and was looking for activities that would keep me more active. Plus, raffles for legit prizes kind of reeled me in. So I told the bf about it and said it would be a great thing to work out together and hopefully get lucky in the raffles. We love our freebies. If you register early online, you get an emailed copy of the map with checkpoint locations half an hour before everyone else. Plus you also get a few more raffle tickets upon signing in and they give you a plastic ziplock bag to contain your tickets along the way. If you buy an Adventure Run t-shirt, you get double the raffles in each checkpoint as well as double the free beers for the end. Oh and kids are also welcome to run too; they just won't be getting the one free beer... You can arrive as early as 5pm to get some raffles from vendors as well as test some products (shoes, foam rollers, ankle/shin/leg supports, chia seed drinks, etc) until 6pm. From 6-7pm is when the run starts. You can choose to do one of two things in this run: aim to grab as many raffle tickets as you can in the allotted time, or aim to run as much as you can in the allotted time. It depends on what your main goal is. Some checkpoints offer more than 1 raffle ticket depending on distance or activity (taste testings at Menchie's, answering questions from local businesses) and some are of different ticket color. I'm not sure what the latter is categorized for but it helps when they do the raffle drawings (White/red/blue/green ticket # ____). We did about 3.5 miles in the 50 minutes we had and boy was I tired in the end and sore the next couple of days. It's so fun I'm already registered to run the next one in a few weeks with the bf. These runs are put on by Road Runner Sports every 4th Thursday of the month from March through November. It's a one hour long run that starts at 6:00 and goes until 7:00pm. What's unique about it is that you run from the store to different check points through the city where they give you raffle tickets. The more check points you visit, the more opportunities you have to win in their raffle drawings. It's fun, free and they also give you one free beer. Truly one of the last free things you can do and not only get a workout but some free stuff. TIPS *Buy the shirt. You get an extra beer and double the raffle tickets if you were it during your run. *Get there early. Check in and check out the vendors that are giving out free swag or letting you try out their gear. I've tried out shoes, GPS watches and ear buds. *Happy Hour: They have a cool happy hour at some local restaurant after the event/. Great place to meet others and they usually have additional raffle drawings. read more

Are you looking for a way to get some exercise while completing a fun mission? Let me tell you about my first Adventure Run I did last month. They offer these FREE runs the last Thursday of the month from April - November and it starts at the Road Runner in Carlsbad. You can either walk or run. I arrived at 5:30 and signed in, showed my ID to get my "over 21" wristband for the free beer at the end, got a couple raffle tickets, and a ziploc bag to hold all my tickets. They had vendors set up outside and they were giving away raffle tickets if you visited their booths. At 6:00 was the big map reveal. Most people took a picture to have with them on the run. The map had different checkpoints of various stores/locations and included the mileage to each point. If you visited a checkpoint you received raffle tickets. Some checkpoints were worth more points than others and some had you do something (i.e. hula hoop, hopscotch, taste Menchie's yogurt). We decided since it was our first time, we would follow a "tour guide;" someone who knows the map and volunteers for the Adventure Run. We were given an hour to hit as many checkpoints as possible. We completed about 5.5 miles in our course. You can shorten the distance or go longer depending on your pace, endurance, etc. I think when you go into it you need to decide if getting raffle tickets is more important to you or getting a decent run in. You can alter your route accordingly. When we returned, they had a beer garden set up and everyone found their spot on the ground to lay out their raffle tickets. There were so many raffle prizes from free running shoes to gift cards to local stores and restaurants to backpacks. How cool is that? After the raffle prizes, there was an after party at a local restaurant where they do more raffles. Super fun event and a great vibe. This is something you could do solo, with a partner, a group of friends, or with your kids. Looking forward to the next run! read more

Do you want to burn calories, drink free beer, and possibly win free prizes? I participated in the adventure run for the first time, and I never expected to have so much fun. I registered online for free on Monday. When I got to the run location on Thursday I just had to do was sign in and show my ID to get a beer garden wristband. They give you free raffle tickets for signing in and having a flashlight. I then made my way over to the vendor area to collect more tickets and try free samples. The race started at 6, and they announced to ticket stops for the run. We had an hour to run to various locations in a ~2 mile radius. The more places you run to the more tickets you get. You can earn extra ticket by wearing the official shirt, doing pushups, drinking vinegar, and finding the shoe dog at the secret stop. At 7 you turn in your tickets and they hand out the free beers. Then they raffle off about 20 cool prizes, including shoes, gift cards, training consultation, etc. I had a blast! read more

The Carlsbad Adventure run is a fun way to get outside, and possibly win some free prizes. With early registration you get extra tickets for beer from stone brewery. You can bring the kids, or dogs, and you get some exercise too. The best part is its free to sign up. I've been running this even for almost two years now and the group has grown, now i'm volunteering to help at the events. Its a great time. read more

I fear I cannot adequately express my deepest devotions to the adventure run. These races taught me that running can be more than a dreaded, postponed workout. I now run official races, but my love of organized runs started with Roadrunner's adventure run. I was new to the sport and apprehensive, beyond couch potato status. These runs allowed me to ease into the racing world without the pressure of race fees, packet pickup and critical glares of seasoned runners. During the adventure run, people of all abilities set their own pace, even strollers and dogs are on the course. Tickets are key. You can sign up in advance and get an extra raffle ticket. You can also purchase an adventure run tank or tee to get double tickets at each stop. At the starting time they drop a map, or most recently, send one electronically sharing the course stops. The entire race runs from 4-6 miles, but you could go to one stop and head back if you want. You choose how much you want to get from the workout. Most stops have an activity, like jumping jacks or burpees that earn extra raffle tickets. At the end, RR raffles shoes, race entry, watches and more! Did I mention that the runs are free and have beer? You are rewarded for your hard work with a well deserved adult beverage and knowing that you just kicked butt before the weekend! read more
