I was invited to this restaurant and let me tell you. It was the best Saturday experience I have had in a restaurant during lunch in a very long time. The serves were amazing, food was the bomb, the interior was extraordinary and the deserts were out of this world. This place is a must go see for sure. Food, shopping, southern charm and definitely interesting history. Ask the servers about the paintings all inside this place and see what you learn. This is a quaint, off the beaten path, wonderful restaurant. It would give you the feel if Paula Deen put her flavor in Cracker Barrel. Plenty of shopping experience which also allows time to eye the cakes. I had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and fries. I do a lot of eating and really was trying to remember a piece of chicken so tender. And large. I appreciate the fact they didn't just soak the breast in the buffalo sauce. Just the right amount. The fries were perfect - hot and crispy. Our waitress took orders for the four of us and didn't write it down. Didn't miss a thing. I called two days prior to my mother-in-law's birthday and ordered a hummingbird cake. The day that I was supposed to pick it up I was so busy trying to get ready for our trip that I completely forgot! I called five minutes prior to them closing and the owner answered the phone. I explained to her that I was extremely sorry that I missed my pick up time Would she be available for me to come and get the cake still. She said yes, they were closing up and to come on over. We've been trying to get to 5 Chefs for awhile now but since they are only open from 11-2 Mon-Sat that window is very small. We finally got there today and we were extremely disappointed. They have a very limited menu - quite a few salads to choose from, but not a big selection of sandwiches. They only had 2 types of burgers - plain and cheese, Not a choice of cheeses, just American! American cheese isn't really even cheese especially if you use the individually wrapped in plastic kind. We were expecting some exciting culinary delights from 5 Chefs. They boasted about their all grass fed beef farmed locally and I got a burned hockey puck - dry and without flavor! Thank goodness for the ketchup, lettuce, tomato, pickles and onions or it would have been completely tasteless. I do have to say that their homemade chips were delicious! Perfectly salted and nice and crispy! That earned them a second star. The hot special today was Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes and fried okra. It also surprisingly came with potato salad and a dinner roll (which was stale). Who serves mashed potatoes and potato salad on the same plate? Apparently 5 Chefs does!! The gravy was very lightly poured over only the Salisbury Steak and not the mashed potatoes. My hubby asked for butter for his mashed potatoes and roll and the waitress brought him one pat. So half a pat for his roll and half a pat for his mashed potatoes. He was hungry, it was edible but his expression summed it up. This is a one and done place! It seems everyone comes for the homemade cakes as the other diners were all packing up to go boxes with pretty sliced cakes. When you receive that kind of snobbery from the owner, no matter the food...or the gift shop, or the desserts can ever make it right. I had enough of that...no one is above being kind and considerate...nor being selective as this owner is. Without going into detail...let me say that for a church going person, this owner needs to rethink her priorities and do some real soul searching. Try the fried pickles but, bring your own ranch dipping sauce. Breakfast is the best and the daily choices of the meat + 3 are hard to beat. I've only been to this place once or twice, and haven't been in a while. They have decent variety but I feel like there could be more. (of course, this could have changed over the months.) I got their Philly Cheese Steak and it was pretty good, I'd rate it a 7/10 flavor wise. This place is somewhat expensive but as I said before, things might have changed since I've last been. A great old home (looks like it's been added on to many times-huge) with great food, professional friendly service AND a large rambling gift shop for walking off that gigantic piece of cake. Lunch is mainly salads (large) and sandwiches. Had the Philly cheese steak ... filling, fresh, and served with plenty of crinkle fries or chips. Try the sweet fruit tea..yummy. And the 1/5 of a huge layer cake will probably need a To Go box. Have 16 cake choices...the Pea Pickin' was a 2layer fresh pineapple cake, with filling and whipped cream containing pineapple and mandrin orange chunks ... Wonderful. The gift shop is a maze of small rooms to discover fun items just off the entrance. Lots of parking and in downtown Portland. Will be back. read more

I enjoy getting lunch at 5 chefs, and shopping after. The food is always good. I do wish they would add maybe some new sandwiches or lunch dishes to the permanent menu. That would be my only complaint. The service is always great and the desserts.... holy cow! It's also dang near spotless in there. I like to go after the typical lunch rush, when it isn't as packed. I like that the shoppes stay open until 4 as well, it makes it nice if you ever need to stop and pick up a quick gift for someone; they definitely have it there! The salad bar had homemade salad dressings, all delicious. But the best part was my Pea-Picking Cake. OH MY. The gift shop is chock-full of precious items you want to buy for people you care about. Ordered off the "specials" menu which offered traditional southern favorites. My order was acceptable, nothing terrible but nothing note worthy - Cracker Barrel is a better bet. My wife had chicken salad that was so bland cardboard has more flavor. She also ordered broccoli cheese "soup" that not only tasted like warmed over nothing and was thick it was more like cheese dip than cheese soup. Would not recommend. Back to my meal. Ordered chicken and dumplings which I was very excited about. because they are not offered on very many menus. They were fine, as stated above Cracker Barrel's are better - but the thing is, my order was served as side item and not the main course. Another person at the table ordered the same thing and their order came in a completely different dish and was so much they took some home!! This is to say nothing of the fact that our party of 8 were served in two waves - 4 people received their food and it took so long for the remained of the table to be served that I went to look for our waitress and when I finally found someone she was coming back to the table and made the remark - in a very shady tone - "I'm literally right behind you." This wouldn't have been issue had all the food come out at the same time, as is customary. We waited so long the first wave of food had become cold while we waited. Pros: Cute atmosphere and gift shop. Good service. Cons: The food. It was average to subpar. They had a seasonal pumpkin soup that was good, but everything else was lacking. Stale croissant. Miracle Whip base for their chicken salad (ick!) and not much flavor. The coconut cake tasted like a box mix and left a filmy chemical aftertaste in my mouth. Eeewww! I met several members of out-of-town family for lunch here on a Saturday. All 6 of us ordered something different and no one was disappointed! Everything turned out great from the appetizers through the desserts. Great sandwiches, burgers, entrees, sides, and cakes. I particularly enjoyed the lobster bisque. The location is interesting too--great atmosphere, nicely decorated, cool converted old house. The dining room is tucked in the back surrounded by levels and rooms of unique gift shop items. read more
