Kudos to this BBQ joint for not being closed on Mondays like most other BBQ joints in the area. Overall Yelp reviews were a 4 so I thought it would be pretty good. There are things I liked but some of it need a little work. Plus when I saw that BBQ pork sandwiches on the menu had mayo on them, I started to seriously question if this was going to be serious BBQ. (Mayo ruins BBQ sandwiches - use BBQ sauce or at least the white BBQ sauce!) Rant over. First thing I liked was the price. A pork plate with a good portion was $7.99. What I didn't like...no combo plates and ribs only on Fridays and Saturdays. I had a pulled pork plate with a corn muffin, Mac and cheese, and potato salad. The best thing on my plate was the potato salad. It was just a good Ole tangy mustard base. Unfortunately, the pork is suppose to be the best thing on my plate. The 2nd best thing was also not the pork but the corn muffin. Finally the pork was the 3rd best food on my plate. The pork itself wasn't bad. It was tender but a little dry and not very flavorful. The mac and cheese was the worst on my plate. Not much flavor to it and a little too watery instead of cheesy. There are 2 sauces - a weak vinegar base on the table and a thicker, ketchup base. The ketchup base would be ok by itself but nothing special. But the 2 sauces mixed together would make a nice sauce with some zest. Sweet tea was perfectly sweet and refreshing. It was all good! So there you have it....not terrible by any means but not great either. There are some good things but a lot of average things too. But if there is one thing they can do to elevate their status as a serious BBQ joint...it's not to put mayo on BBQ sandwiches. read more

I was surprised by this place. It had pretty good yelp reviews but I'm extremely picky about my barbecue (I'm a Carolina girl, I got high standards!), so I didn't really think a place in Portland, TN, would do it for me. It's a tiny restaurant, bad for groups, but good for a quick sit down lunch with a couple others. The bathroom was extremely clean. The menu is overwhelming- lots of meat, plus more meat in various types and quantities. They don't have as many sides as I expected, just about 3 or 4 options. French fries and onion rings weren't on the list, so my hopes dropped even more. They do have a menu to the side with a daily combo special, and the deal of the day was a BBQ Baked Potato. Sounded good, so I got it with chicken barbecue, a side of slaw, and their lemonade. The barbecue was amazing. The chicken was cooked just right, not dry, and went really well with a baked potato. We got our food to go but they included their tomato based sauce. Wow! I loved it. I wish I had gotten just a full barbecue sandwich because the meat was so good! But I love potatoes and just needed one that day, you know how it is. The slaw was good and seemed to have a sweet vinegar sauce with cracked pepper. The container looks small but they really packed the slaw in and it was a perfect amount. I got a cornbread roll on the side too and it was delicious. My only complaints (very minor) are the cheese and the lemonade. They put cheese on my BBQ potato but it was shredded American cheese, or something processed with no flavor and a weird texture. Next time I'll get it with no cheese (FYI this cheese also comes on their salad). I expected a homemade lemonade which is why I ordered it but it tasted like Country Time, not my thing. Also, the medium sized drink is what I would consider a large anywhere else, so if you don't want a lot, get a small! All I can say is it's 20x's better than the Paula Dean restaurant. They cook it fresh and it is so good. Breakfast and lunch either one. This cozy little restaurant is one where you will meet your neighbor or a traveling through visitor and by the time you leave you've already talked to each table beside you. I just love it. We went to the newer location in Gallatin. We are new to the area and realized we don't like vinegary sauce. we asked the owner(nicest man ever) about the sauce and even though it's vinegar based, we stayed to try it and, oh boy, are we glad we did!!!!!!! I had the loaded hot dog and it was amazing! Big chinks of union, cheese and the best beans I've ever had! My hubby got the trash can....dear God.....,..Fritos, pulled pork, queso, cheese and sauce make up this masterpiece. We inhaled our lunch. Place is so clean. The corn muffins are good. I wasn't impressed with the ribs. Other's with me weren't overly impressed either. They had the pull-pork sandwich and said the taste was good, but they had had much better. Young people working didn't seem like they cared to be there and it shower in the prep and such. The smoked turkey is the best meat on the menu in my opinion. If you are wanting beef options such as brisket, you are out of luck. The baked beans taste as though they come from a can and have no personality to them. If you live or work in the area and simply do not want to drive to a neighboring town, then it will suffice.
