What a pleasant surprise this place was. Love how cozy it is, and that you can look at the food as you order! There is a huge variety of sides to get which I appreciated. Definitely will eat here instead of R&R when I want BBQ in the future. I thought the 1 Meat Plate was a good deal. I asked for fattier brisket cuts which was super tender and yummy. The cornbread with the honey butter.....you can't go wrong. And I usually don't order mac & cheese because it always lacks flavor and salt haha. But their mac & cheese it sooooo cheesy and really good (pretty heavy, but still good haha). We also got fried okra which was yummy. Everything was super good, and portions were fairly large (including the sides!). We'll probably stick to the meat plates next time we come (just more food). I've always enjoyed 5 star bbq but it had been some time since I've last visited. The setting of the restaurant is a converted two-story residence with ample seating upstairs. There used to be only industrial buildings around, but now it's surrounded by newer commerce. The ribs were fresh and tasty, but be aware they are on the fattier side, if you prefer a more lean rib. The brisket was also tasty, but again you'll get some fatty pieces unless you speak up and prefer a more lean cut. The creamy corn is some of the best you'll try. The Mac n cheese was pretty good. The cornbread was good, with the whipped butter and is pretty dense. I tried some of the beans and they were smoky and delicious. The service was also great. We were disappointed that the brisket and pork were dry, and that they gave me corn bread instead of the garlic toast I asked for. All I have to say is that my picky daughter ate all of her pulled pork and that is triumph! I loved the brisket. We tried the fried okra, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, fries, and corn bread. Came here tonight for dinner and we ordered takeout. The two managers working were extremely kind and helpful. They provided many recommendations given it was our first time. My husband and I both got the two meat plates. Our food was still hot when we got home! I did the sausage and chicken and he did the sausage and brisket. We both loved the sausage! It had the perfect amount of heat and was super flavorful! The chicken was tender and pairs perfectly with the spicy house sauce! I tried some of the brisket and it was so tender - it basically melted in my mouth. I would love to try the ribs next time. As far as the sides go, the fried funeral potatoes were so creamy, rich, and absolutely delicious! The coleslaw was really good and not drenched it sauce like many other restaurants. The mac and cheese was tasty (this was my favorite). It was really creamy and the pepper was a nice addition. The mashed potatoes were a hit as well. Love that they keep the skins on them too for that additional texture and flavor. The garlic toast was good but I highly recommend the cornbread. 5 Star is a 4 star. We used to live like 1/4 mile from this place years ago. Since moved away but were back in the area and decided to stop back in for dinner. Super nostalgic! But let me tell you in the span of 10 years this place hasn't changed at all! The windows are still dirty, the flies still infest the dining area, the decor still holds the same dust! Other than a re-done front counter, the place is identical.. but the place still offers some good BBQ! We got 3 meat plate (brisket, chicken, pork'que) and my wife got a brisket plate. The food gets a solid 4/5. A tiny bit dry, but flavorful. The "que" bowl was soaked in bbq sauce and rather overpowering. Brisket was good but yes, a little dry. No option for lean or fatty here like some of the other bbq spots. Mac n cheese was a bit bland and the slaw rather dry but who goes for the sides am I right? I'd go back. The service was great: greeted at the door, very friendly staff. My favorite combo is the Kinda Hot + a couple drops of the Sweet! And, can we talk about how Funeral Potato Balls should be EVERYWHERE, like fries! I think 5 Star BBQ is my favorite so far, but it doesn't compare to some places back home. The service was quick, friendly and just wonderful. Today my family participated in a barbecue taste off and Five Star BBQ & Catering Co. was one of the six participants. I had never tried them before, so this was my only experience. I would like to stop by their restaurant in the future and try more of their menu items. The pulled pork was very good. The texture was on point, with just the right balance of cooked ends and moist middle pieces. They have a 3 meat plate that comes with two sides and choice of cornbread, garlic bread or toast. I will say not all the sides were great. The cornbread was really bland and had a weird texture but when it's lathered in the honey butter it made up for it! Both the banana pudding and strawberry seasonal pudding were really really good! They hire high school kids to serve up the meat and I've had brisket that's been over cooked and cut improperly so it was knuckle and tough. They need to train people to cut brisket against the grain and only serve brisket that's fresh. We waited 45 minutes to get our order this afternoon. We came at 4pm and there were not very many people there. We ordered the special - a Valentines Special that consisted of a prime rib steak, potatoes, veggies and a dessert. After 45 minutes our food came but it was entirely cold! The steak was cold, the au jus was super cold, the potatoes and veggies were cold. We asked to have the whole order warmed up. The waiter said they could redo the order but after waiting 45 minutes we just wanted it heated up. So after another 20 minute wait, we went to the cashier and asked for our money back. The cashier said they couldn't do that - they didn't know how. Anyway, I'd give a worse recommendation if I could. We spent $53 for this single order and we did not get to enjoy anything. read more
