The chunks were so thick it made it chewy. Maybe if sliced thinner it would've been better. 3. The potato salad tasted like it was made with dole whip cream it was terribly sweet. The Mac and cheese had no flavor to it at all, and the beans were alright. 4. The sausage was flavorful and juicy. We finished that. I feel so bad for the people of Utah that think this is good bbq. It is not. I don't expect Texas bbq outside of Texas but this was just sad and not worth the $80 we spent. And what's worse is we are still hungry because the ribs were inedible and the brisket was so chewy. And, please please please go over meat carving with whoever was cutting the brisket this evening (4/7).

We ordered one of each to compare. Honest verdict: the regular buffet holds its own and the premium upgrade did not justify the price difference enough to order it again next time. The table sauces are worth exploring. The roasted sesame is my personal favorite, but the miso apple and garlic shoyu are both worth trying alongside your meat. A selection of vegetables comes with the grill as well. One welcome improvement since my last visit: the ventilation setup has been redesigned so the smoke no longer follows you home in your clothes for the rest of the evening. A small thing that makes a real difference. The time limit is around three hours, which is more than enough. Forty minutes at the grill was plenty for us. Now for the honest part. The cold buffet side needs work. The spring rolls were a miss, the Hawaiian mac salad was forgettable, and the only sushi option was a California roll that did not taste fresh. For a restaurant that executes the grilling experience this well, the appetizer and salad bar deserve more attention. Four stars for the meat, the experience, and the improved ventilation. In the end, I paid $18 for what was essentially a bowl of spring mix with two slices of avocado, three orange segments, no goat cheese, and nine paper-thin slices of beets. That's unacceptable. To make matters worse, we tried calling to speak with a manager, but the phones were turned off at 8:15 p.m., even though the restaurant advertises that it's open until 9:00 p.m. This was the last straw with Cubby's. The night shift clearly needs better training and quality control. Charging customers for extras and then not including them is not okay. If you want to waste your money on food that is carelessly prepared and doesn't match what you paid for, this is a great place to go.

The first thing I saw last night as I walked in was a roach which measured an inch long, sauntering across the food prep counter. I pointed it out to my wife a couple of times before she looked and saw it as it disappeared under the counter top. This was off putting and contributed to our poor experience at the restaurant. We were served meat on a small plastic plate and two sides. I chose beans and corn chowder. Both of these seem like good choices to go with barbeque. The beans were bland. What? I expected good beans in a place that specializes in barbecue. But what did I expect after tasting the rather substandard barbeque? They must depend on people adding sauce to the food. I didn't, I just wanted to get out of the place as fast as possible. My wife assures me she'll never go there again and I'm shocked at the few friends who have given the place rave reviews in the past. I came back to Utah by way of Texas and New Mexico. I had amazing brisket at a place called Rudy's in both Albuquerque and in Austin. Ever since, I've been looking for a BBQ restaurant that did brisket like Rudy's. Well, I have finally found it! Five Star BBQ is easily the best BBQ restaurant I've experienced in Utah, and it is the equal of the great Rudy's. For sheer goodness of food, I can't recommend this place enough. The brisket had nice flavor and was moist and tender, the pork was a little bland in flavor but moist and tender. The choice of bbq sauces was a fun way to experiment and did wonders to the pork.
