The food was phenomenal. The place (restaurant parking, entrance, seating area as well as the bathrooms) were extremely clean and spacious. The lighting was perfect for a family dining out experience (not super dark or halogen lights in your face). The only one issue was the service, which was sub par. Our server didn't check up on us once in the hour we were sat. Even after our meals were finished, we waited a good 15 minutes before we got restless and went up to the reception area to ask for someone to help us with the payment/boxing up leftovers. Don't get me wrong, the food came out in a timely manner and it was hot/fresh. It was just the tardy server that we all noticed. I'm giving it a 5 star rating because of all the Indian places I've tried in Indianapolis and Bloomington, the quality of the food was BEYOND amazing. I tried this spot after having tried most Indian spots in the greater Indy area and also trying an all-vegetarian Indian restaurant in greenwood (which I had previously considered to be the best) and while that's a cozy spot with great food/great service, this restaurant is most definitely the best in Indy (for veg AND non-veg options). 10/10 recommend for anyone craving Indian food in the Indy area. read more

Friendly and quick service, with lots of parking and it wasn't very busy when we visited. We started with a complimentary appetizer of chips made from black lentils, served with three sauces. The green sauce was a mint coriander chutney with some spice, the brown sauce was a tamarind chutney that was sweet and tangy, and the red was marinated onions. Everything was SO good! They offer water tap or bottles, and the soda comes in cans, so there are no free refills. For my entree, I ordered the Butter Chicken, medium spice. My husband ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, mild. It wasn't listed on the menu, but they were able to make it for him. He really enjoyed his meal. I liked my Butter Chicken as well. The flavor was delicious, I just wish the chicken pieces were a little smaller. The food had great flavor, and I'd definitely come back to try more dishes! We ordered lamb curry. The curry was flavorful. The lamb, however, was tough. It was NOT fresh. They masked it by mixing fresh pieces with old pieces that were extremely tough and hard to chew. The service was subpar. We told her about our dissatisfaction, she gave us a menu and then didn't come back for over 10 minutes. The place only had 4 tables and there were multiple servers (no excuse). Based on the service, I'm sure they couldn't care less about us ever returning. We will not be back. read more

Overall, this place was really good! They gave you a lot of food for the price and the food was better than I was expecting. However, nothing will ever beat homemade Indian food so that's why I gave it four times. The food isn't too oily either, which I appreciate for Indian food as it usually is here. We enjoy Indian cuisine in general but the most on cooler days. After hearing great reviews we finally got to try 5 Star on Sunday evening. This place feels warm and welcoming upon entrance. They have ample seating and separate space for parties/larger group. (Ample private parking space btw) We were greeted and seated right away. With a hangry kid with us we requested to get mango lassi right away. But in handle full of minutes remaining order was placed too - Chole Bhature, Aloo Tikki Chat, Butter Naan and Malai Kofta. And then the long wait started. We got our lassi after about 10-12 minutes wait and CB and ATC in about another 25-30 minutes. So far after trying multiple restaurants in multiple cities, 5 star has better Chole taste than others. Bhature was average, we have had better Bhature. Aloo tikki chat tasted better once the hot tikki cooled down a little. Lassi had perfect sweetness but bit watered down than a bit of chunky consistency of lassi. The hostess did check on us in between and apologized about wait due to busy hour. We had easily waited good 30 minutes after finishing our appetizers. But! Finally the food arrived. And it was delicious for sure. Perfectly cooked naan, savory but little sweet kofta entree. The only thing lacking was we had ordered mild spice level but this was definitely a medium. Informed our hostess of this to get a response of well the Indian spices can be spruced down only so much. Agreed but not agreed! Women restroom was clean but out of paper towels, (no air dryer) stayed so till I was there. All in all, great food but too long and gaped of a wait for each item to arrive, okay-ish service. I am willing to give this place one more try and hopefully on a less busier hour before I set my review in stone for this restaurant. read more

We decided to meet friends for dinner and as we all like Indian thought we would try this new to us place. It is easy to find and has ample parking as well as several entrances. Once you enter it is nice and clean with an airy feeling that has hints of the Bob Evans it used to be (left over signs etc with honey sayings). We were greeted promptly and led to a table which had a nice fancier place setting and flower. There is a smell of jasmine in the air so keep that in mind if you are sensitive to smells. The menu has a lot of the usual and to be expected fare, but also some new to us things which was nice. We tried the gobi manchurian as well as an eggplant main dish. Our friends ordered a goat dish and a tikka masala. The waiter brought out some light chutneys and sauces with the dried roti type bread/cracker for us on the house. They were a nice start! Our meals were brought out fairly quickly which was a bit of a surprise but a pleasant one. Everything looked the same as it all had the same 'mother sauce' on it, and was a tomato/cream type of gravy. It tasted good and had nice flavor, but I might choose next time to get something with spinach to get more of that natural seasoning and not as much of the 'mother sauce'. We did ask for extra rice which evidently comes at a charge (weren't sure as rice usually comes either each main entree). I'd not choose to do that again, but we also didn't ask about that so it wasn't their fault. Just good to know for next time. The only disappointing item was their special naan which was to have nuts, raisins etc and be a sort of sweeter version. What arrived at the table was dry like a cracker with absolutely no flavor or taste, and for sure didn't have nuts or anything sweet inside. I would not recommend that at all and we should have asked for another order, but everything else was tasteful so we carried on. The staff is very friendly and helpful and despite being busy they checked on us often. I would go back but would for sure get another dish to taste the differences, and only get freshly baked naan. We decided to do a family dinner here on a Saturday night (8 adults and 4 kids). We were so excited for our meal but left extremely disappointed. First off, we were told because of the size of our party, we would get water bottles instead of glasses and jugs of water. (We were charged for every bottle even though we didn't ask for bottles.) Food Review: -Gobi Manchurian was the BEST item we ordered. Fully of flavor and crispy. -Chicken 65 was drier than what I've had at other restaurants and needed some more flavor. -Mixed Grill was average but I've had better elsewhere. -Matar Paneer wasn't bad but needed some more flavor. -Butter Chicken was heavy on the tomato paste and didn't take like how butter chicken is supposed to taste like. -Malai Kofta was extremely sweet and had no flavor to it. It tasted different than what we have ordered from here in the past. -Bindi Masala was average. -Eggplant Bharta wasn't good at all. The eggplant was overly smoked and made the dish taste bitter. -Yellow dal was good and tasted homemade. Overall, there are times the food is good and times where the food could be better. This was our first visit to an Indian Restaurant. We went with friends that wanted us to try Indian Cuisine. It was delicious. Our daughter tried Medium spicy butter chicken. She really liked it. My husband tried lamb kabobs. He enjoyed them though thought they were a little dry. I had chicken and egg plant mild spice. It was delicious. The only reason I gave 4 stars was due to the dry lamb and a little bit of a language barrier. I would want to be sure someone could explain what I was ordering better. I was glad our friends could help with that. Otherwise we had great service. The restaurant was nice and clean. And overall the food was great! Our first trip to 5 Star was excellent, and we couldn't wait to return, so here we are for our 5th or 6th visit. You'll find a private parking lot with several handicapped parking spaces. The restaurant used to be the old Bob Evans on U.S. 31 right before Thompson Road. They have done a lovely job decorating the restaurant without major renovation plus a quite and peaceful decor. I ordered carryout this time, and the server who took my order was so sweet with a beautiful smile and so friendly. I didn't have a chance to call-in or go online so I did have to wait 25 mins since it was busy. They do a wonderful job preparing carryout with secure containers. The menu is very diverse and I would think most anything you'd want you'll find on the menu. Vegetarian and vegan options are available. We've had several of the appetizers, entrees and desserts and enjoyed all. the Vegetable Samosa, Aloo Tikki Chat, Aloo Gobhi (Vegan), Yellow Dai, Paneer/Chicken/Vegetarian Tikki Masala, Aloo Paratha Bread (Whole Wheat Flour stuffed with spiced potato filling) and Garlic Naan (love). We lean toward chicken or vegetarian entrees while others enjoy the lamb or goat. The Butter Chicken is always a favorite along with Chicken Curry and Chicken Tikka Saag (cooked in spinach puree) or the Tandoor Specialities. If you enjoy hot and spicy I recommend the delicious Chili Chicken. I feel the Chicken Vindaloo is hotter than Chili Chicken with a nice amount of spices. We have enjoyed all the appetizers and entrees aforementioned. I never know what I'll order since it always depends on which sauce I'm carving at the time. The Gulab Jamun is a favorite dessert followed by rice pudding. There are still a couple desserts we want to try. For a beverage, I'd recommend a Sweet Lassi. Canned Coke products are also served. So good! I was on my own so I ordered delivery. Everything arrived quickly and well packaged. The rice smelled so fragrant. Everything was delicious. I had the Chana masala with a side of vegetarian samosas. There portions were huge for the price. The rice and the mint chutney were probably my favorite of the whole meal. I had two full plates at home and still had enough leftovers for the next day. I feel like this location has held a lot of restaurants. Maybe now that the road construction is done on 31 right there, that will help. But this place is delicious so I hope it stays! read more

I am always looking for great Indian restaurants and this one did not disappoint. They have all the regular staples and I found the few I have had very good. Unlike many Indian restaurants they have never asked me the spice level I want. I would say their standard is "medium-hot" and I did do with someone who wanted very mild and they happily obliged. This is our favorite place for Indian cuisine in the southern Indianapolis area. The seating area is nice (from an old Bob Evan's) with plenty of room and it is consistently clean. It is also quiet enough to easily have a nice conversation. We come in the evenings and there is always plenty of room to park. The server always comes very fast and they get the food prepared quickly. They provide very good papadam before your food is done. It is really good and the sauce they provide is excellent. The food we have tried here has been very good (including vegetable samosa's, tikka masala, and chicken biryani). I would say that the food runs a little hotter than what we have had had at other Indian restaurants so you may want to get mild if you don't like the heat. The most negative thing I could say is that the tap water isn't very good. I can't really blame them since they are just using the city water. They do offer bottled water for a price, but you can just bring water in a bottle from home (which is what my wife does). read more

Well it is definitely NOT a Bob Evans any more!! The Singh Family has done a spectacular job of transforming the former Bob Evans into a true five star Indian cuisine experience. Attention to details in decorating the insides to the really pretty black and gold printed menus add to the ambiance. The chairs, tables and booths had been restored to like new appearance. Everything was clean, clean, clean! The menu's were awesome and had to cost a "pretty penny" to have them printed. They were glossy black with gold ornate designs and the printing was gold. I took some pictures but I don't know how well they are going to reproduce. They also have a carry out menu and seemed to be doing a fair business with it. There were extensive entre choices arranged into different categories like chicken, goat, vegetarian, lamb and seafood. So how was the food? Excellent. Our table got the Chili Chicken,Chicken Tikka Saag, Lamb Madras, Paneer Tikka Masala. Two kinds of bread: garlic naan and Onion Kulcha ( two thumbs up by the way). We were too full for dessert. The way the restaurant is set up it is perfect for small groups. There was a group of about 24 in one room and there was a smaller room that looked like it could easily hold 16. We were like the only non-Indian patrons for awhile. When the waitress brought us our food, she just set it in the table leaving us to guess what was what. They bring you water in a Sam's Club bottle and it is at room temperature. We asked for glasses with ice and that really threw the waitress. I guess they just don't understand US citizens obsession with ice. Finally, a special round of kudos for the kitchen staff. With the large group, they had to be just slammed. I thought we would be delayed in getting our meals but they absorbed us well and got the food out of the kitchen promptly. read more

Our family tried this gem for the first time last night. We love Indian food, and are always ready to try somewhere new. We were greeted as we walked in, and seated immediately. The tables were set with plates and real flatware that was beautifully wrapped in a cloth napkin. There was a vase of flowers on each table as well. The menu is extensive and took everyone a few minutes to look over the whole thing. Wanting to try something new, I ordered Chicken Tandoori. My husband and daughters each chose different items. We ordered 2 orders of garlic Naan. A basked of cracker like bread and serving dishes of several sauces was brought to us. My family enjoyed all of this. Soon, our food was brought to us. Each dish came in a serving dish. We each were also brought a serving dish of rice. My dish had 3 chicken thighs and 3 chicken legs. My family's dishes were also generous in size. Needless to say, we all had leftovers. They brought us plastic containers for the saucy things and paper for the non-saucy. I was able to enjoy the chicken a second time for lunch today! New Indian restaurant in a converted Bob Evans near 465 Southside. They did a great job transforming the inside. We are big fans of Indian food and 5 star did not disappoint. Large servings with plenty of protein. Flavors were robust and you can pick your heat. Even mild had some kick to it. Staff were friendly and attentive. We were served a crispy cracker-like item w/ 3 chutneys; one was slightly minty & green (slightly spicy), one was tamarind (sweet), and the 3rd was red & chunky and we were told was 'onion'. We did NOT enjoy the onion...too spicy & raw tasting for us. Veg Pakora was said to be "medium" heat, and for a midwestern palate that can't take heat, that was accurate. Riiight on the edge of being too much heat & I drank a lot of water. But for those who like spicy, it'll be "mild" but more than zero. We wished it came with a creamy sauce. Butter chicken was delicious, as was the chicken shahi korma, which we ordered 'mild' & didn't have any heat. Would recommend & I'd love a copy of their recipes. The garlic naan was pretty burned on the bottom, which was a turn-off. I wouldn't' get that again. $4 seems like too much for 1 slice of naan cut into quarters. I'd go again. read more

I found the restaurant doing a Google search to avoid going downtown or to Broad Ripple-and it did not disappoint! This is now my preferred spot. The food is seasoned well and I appreciate they allow you to pick your spice level. My favorite is the butter chicken and my partner loves the curry goat and lamb vindaloo spicy. read more
