Butter Chicken was really bad, my wife couldnt eat it. Tikka Masala was a little better but both items were super greasy and had an odd taste. Extremely salty

Very nice staff and excellent tasting food. The interior decor is also cute. The mango lassi is so sweet. Their dessert selection was one of my favorites among Indianapolis Indian restaurants. The prices are higher, but the portions are HUGE. You can get regular or family size for most dishes, but even the regular is about 3 meals for me (as a light eater). I found that the menu posted on Yelp is very accurate. They have a selection of Indian and Pakistani foods. You may choose spice levels. Many dishes are vegetarian or vegan. Parking is plentiful in this strip mall which is right off of I-65.

Chapati was my introduction into Indian cuisine and let's just say my experience was unforgettable. Everything I dipped my fork into was packed with flavor. They have a huge variety and tons of options for my vegetarian and vegan friends. The staff helped answer all the questions I had about the menu! As a foodie, it's always a win when you try a new food and you instantly obsess over it. That's 100% me with their chicken tikka masala!

I'm so glad we decided look on Yelp for Indian restaurants on our drive through Indy! I've done this drive over a dozen times, but it's the first time I've discovered Chapati. It's super unassuming but it's worth a stop-in!! They had two menus - one for Chapati and one for their fusion fried chicken concept! We opted for for the Pakistani & Indian dishes: *Pani Puri - (Vegan - $8.95 Crispy mini puries with spiced water, sweet chutney, sweet yogurt, tomatoes, onions, and chickpeas) - if you haven't had this Indian Street dish, it's worth a try and so fun to eat! My husband said it reminded him of pico de gallo & instead of tortilla chips, you get fun puffed up puries! 1) You take one of the puffed up puri pieces & knock it with the back of your spoon to make a little opening 2) You fill the opening with the chickpea mixture that also has tomatoes & onions (see the pico de gallo reference a bit?!) 3) Then you squirt a bit of the spiced water for a PERFECT bite! *Beef Nihari ($16 - Our rich, spiced, and beefy broth soup served with chunks of tenderized beef all slow cooked after deep marination.) - This dish was so comforting and stewy. The flavors were clearly developed over a long time. It was a bit thick so my only wish was that there was more beef brothy goodness to dip and eat with the chapati/basmati rice! *Palak Paneer - Vegetarian - $13 Spiced spinach cooked in a creamy sauce with fresh paneer) - Paneer really reminds me of cheese curds - in a good way. When it's super fresh, there's a nice squeakiness to it! No complaints - super tasty! *Butter Chicken ($15 - Boneless chicken marinated in our tomato spread then slow cooked with spices and our cream sauce.) - The chicken was definitely chicken thighs as it was flavorful and practically melted in your mouth from all slow cookin'! Yum. *Chapati ($1.75 Whole wheat flat bread) - per my tip below, no entrees COME with rice or bread, so you must order separately! I figured this place is called chapati, so I should try ordering their chapati. It's like a flat bread that is PERFECT for soaking up all the deliciousness from the nihari, palak and butter chicken! The above was way too much for 2 people and we had leftovers for a couple more meals after! TIPS: *all the grilled items take ~30 minutes, so order ahead or plan accordingly! *nothing comes with rice or breads so you need to order a la carte on the side!

This place is located in a very unassuming area ; you drive fast enough and you are liable to miss it. I've been here about a couple of times now n the past and the food was solid then but because of where it is at - we did not really come back until over the weekend. The eggplant masala and garlic naan is even better than we remember. It was so good we ended up getting some rice too. It's a big place and the way it's set up - you almost wonder if they could maybe change the layout so it looks more like traditional restaurant? But please don't let that discourage you from trying their food. When we were N there - they had a ton of take out orders! I mean that's what happens when your food is delicious, right? They also have a spot at the garage in downtown Indy ... for those folks in that area, check them out! Be adventurous with your choice of food and you will not be sorry

I'm very disappointed. The order was received by the restaurant and not prepared as advertised through their online ordering service. We picked it up and took it home. The chicken has bones despite saying "boneless" on their menu. I also ordered a "double portion" which I don't believe was a good value. If this is their double portion, it don't waste your money. $30 for this (pictured) plus naan. I asked the owner to please correct the order and he said he didn't need to because it is correct. I also would have accepted a refund and returned the food. Then he hung up on me. This is the menu we ordered from online.

I heard a LOT of reviews of Chapati and couldn't wait to try it. Step in and the ambience takes you back to Indian roots - the seats set up with Carrom board which is a very popular game in India. Shelves decorated with popular spices and a whole lot of diversity defining decor. I much appreciate the variety. Food tasted very authentic, fresh and spice level was very decent. The Chicken boti and side chutney (dip) was a stellar combo. The garlic kulcha (tortilla) wasn't too garlicky and absolutely soft and fresh. Loved the Asian style of serving dishes which is very common in India and Pakistan. The retro Indian music added to the touch! Not too many people and good spacious seating. 5* for the food and ambience!

Great food and lovely service. Tommy helped us make our selections and guided us in choosing the right spice level. We had chicken biryani extra spicy and chicken tikka masala spicy. We enjoyed both. We will be back to try the goat biryani extra extra spicy!!

garlic naan, chaat, beef nihari, butter chicken and of course, chapati! Oh an a samosa. Everything was delicious!
    Sara M.

Everything was delicious! They were out of goat meat so we couldn't try any of the goat dishes. My husband and I shared the food in the picture. Chaat was a mouth watering mix of flavors and textures, get it! We were so hungry and we ate everything you see in the picture and we could've had more lol. If we're ever back in Indianapolis, we are coming back here for sure.

It was cold and raining. He was so awesome. I never caught his name, but he remembered mine. They made my food fresh and it was amazing. I had the yellow lentils and lamb (spicy). Perfect. They also had some seasoning boxes to make food at home. If weren't visiting from the other side of the country, I would have bought some to make.

I'm at the point where the only time I'll order Indian food is when it comes from Chapati's kitchen. I find that when I place an order at my neighborhood Indian spots, I end up disappointed and wish I had just called Chapati instead. They *truly* serve the best Indian food in Indy. While narrowing a favorite vegetarian or vegan dish is impossible, I do want to lift up that one's order should always include a samosa (or two) and a mango lassi. I love starting and finishing my meal with those top-notch items, and--if you haven't added them to your order--you best not miss out on such deliciousness.

    Ask the Community - Chapati

Is there curry thick with coconut milk or watery?

We do not have any coconut milk curries.

Does this restaurant have any gluten free options for celiac?

I think if you steer clear of the naan and Chapati (flat bread) and stick to the dishes, you are golden. You can always call and ask - they're amazing people!

I never stopped before because they don't have a parking lot, and finding parking close by could challenging, we parked 2 blocks away. It's a small, cozy place! It wasn't very busy when we arrived, considering it was lunch time, but it got crowded while we were there and I noticed several take out orders. We were promptly greeted upon entering and since it was just the two of us, we were seated at a small table for two. However, after ordering, a side table was needed for all of our entrées! We shared the vegetable mixed platter as an appetizer, which was more than enough for the two of us. All were delicious but my favorite was the samosas with mint chutney! I chose the Chicken Tikka Masala (medium spice) with rice and garlic naan bread. Although it took awhile for it to be prepared, my meal was freshly prepared and absolutely delicious! I finished my meal with a cup of hot Masala teaAll in all, a pleasant dining experience.

The interior is cozy and nicely decorated and doesn't have an overwhelming amount of tables. They seemed to stay consistently busy inside and a steady flow of carryout orders. Spice levels are always a little tricky with Indian food. I did order a mild vegetable briyani dish for my toddler but it was too spicy for him but he did devour the garlic Naan. I ordered one of the lamb dishes "mild" and my friend one of the sizzling chicken dishes "spicy." We switched dishes as the spice levels seemed to have switched from what we requested. Overall everything was delicious. Mango lassi was great and I also decided to try Masala tea, which i will definitely have to try again.

We arrived close to opening, so it wasn't busy. Lively Indian music was playing in the background, it was very noticeable since there was no one inside when we arrived. The first thing that caught my attention was my water cup. It had a lot of lint on it, which made me nervous to drink from it. I asked for another cup, but then noticed a bug in that one. Thankfully, the server had no issue replacing it again. We started with the aloo gobi spicy, and that was great as usual. The garlic naan was also delicious and one of the highlights of the meal. My dad and I both ordered the butter chicken spicy, and this is where things went downhill. There was basically no spice at all. It tasted more like a level 0 for spice. The server offered a red sauce to spice it up (I think it was sriracha), but it just wasn't the same. We also only received one portion of rice, when usually each butter chicken comes with its own rice. The sauce was much runnier than normal, and the chicken to sauce ratio was uneven between our dishes. Unfortunately, we left dissatisfied with this visit. Not sure if there was a different cook today, but I'm hoping this was just an off day because I've enjoyed this place in the past and would love to see it back on point next time.
