Was craving sushi so came here. The building is very interesting, looks like an old factory and the seating is around an indoor balcony. The service was poor. We were given only one menu and had to ask for a second but still were not given the sheet with explanations of the rolls until we ordered. Service was slow but it could be due to the fact we were seated the furthest away possible. Also one of the rolls we ordered was forgotten and I had to ask for ginger cause it was sitting on an empty table. The sushi was definitely not the best I ever had, but probably the cheapest. 2 miso soups, 3 rolls, 1 nigiri for $18. Not sure if that is scary or not. Most of the rolls are imitation crab meat inside and all are very similar. Gonna try another place next time I'm in Salem. read more

I love this place! I visited 503 Sushi Bar for the first time today and was so incredibly impressed. The girl who served me gave me the run down on how to order and was very sweet. After I ordered I only waited maybe 5-8 minutes for my food (a spider roll and one other roll) which is really impressive for freshly made sushi! Sushi was delicious and while I was eating the owner Kay came over and talked with me. He asked me about myself and was incredibly nice! I found out he has 7 years experience making sushi and the other chef has 15 years! It definitely shows because their sushi is not only delicious but also beautifully prepared. I will definitely be a returning customer and recommending this place to all of my friends and family! Not a terrible place but not really good, their ordering system is subpar as you scan a qr code amd search online, but the online ordering is not set up well and the description of some rolls you have to look at the physical menu for which are listed in a different order, and for other rolls the description doesn't exist, which would be fine, I prefer asking the server anyways, except that with online ordering the server doesn't really check on you until food time anyways. The food tasted ok, but was very small. All in all I didn't hate my time but would certainly not return. read more

I walked in and waited by the sign that asks that you wait to be seated. Made eye contact with the host a few times but he didnt speak to me at all until another man came out of the back and yelled at him. (I don't get to Salem very often and this place is next to The Little Cannoli Bakery...I had stopped in there earlier to pick up a few treats for my husband.) The host came over to me and before saying anything else, yelled at me, "You no bring that food in here!" I thought this was rude but if that's their restaurant policy then ok. I simply said, "Oh ok, thanks anyway." and started to leave. The other man asked me what it was and I told him it was just pastries. Gosh. Where do I even begin. It is rare that I give 1 star ratings. You have to be doing something really bad to get to that level. This place touched 1 star on so many different levels its not even funny. ATMOSPHERE Such potential. I've dined in this place before when it was a mexican restaurant. Its a super cool location in downtown. What these owners have done is litterally nothing. Tables and chairs. No decor or good vibes. SERVICE We have attempted to dine her 2 other times and they were closed, although hours said they were open. This time we stood at the front because a sign said "please wait to be seated". We watched for 3 min while the 2 waitress stood and chatted together, completely ignoring us across the room. My husband finally said lets walk around and just go sit. It took us litterally standing next to them for any noticed that we were in the place. Service lacked throughout meal. Had to ask for check multiple times. These people need training... MENU No descriptions on any of the rolls. Tiny font menu. No descriptions from waitresses. Frustrating... FOOD This was seriously the worst sushi I've ever tasted. Their top 2 "filler" ingredients (of the 5 different rolls we tried) contained KRAB SALAD and AVOCADO. It was so disgusting. We didn't even finish the rolls. The tuna nigiri was frozen. Overall, this is terrible sushi. I'm so sorry, but it is. I read through reviews and noticed that the "good" ones are either 1 reviewer people OR all from when they first opened. I am updating this review because unfortunately the quality of the sushi here has dropped, like O Sushi, who is in the same quality and price bracket, their sushi went from great for the price to bad enough(1 yr ago), I almost didn't come back. It appears one of the owners was really not doing well at that time, so 8 months later I gave them another shot, I've come back twice since then and the quality, while not what it used to be, had improved, but it went from great for the price bracket, to just good/average, still better than O Sushi though and better than sushi Kiyo or Momiji's on Commercial, but nowhere near the quality of Momiji on Silverton Road or Fuji Rice Time. They still struggle with finding good wait staff as well, They cannot seem to find good help for waiting tables. I usually just get takeout because of that, and they are pretty good for takeout. I still love their special rolls, and their Eel roll and dragon roll are some of my favorites anywhere, the flavor is just really spot on with some great eel sauce. I can eat those all day! As already stated, things have dropped quality, ingredients don't taste as fresh(the fish and avacados), rice is sometimes overcooked, etc. Unfortunately(well only unfortunate if you own a sushi restaurant competing), Salem has a lot of sushi, we have a Japanese university, that's why! So, you either got to be really cheap with good portions(usually of imitation crab) OR reasonably priced with great food! 503 falls somewhere in between those now, and I wouldn't eat in, but they are great for takeout. The Ramen noodle is truly delicious! However, the chefs or owners are unwelcoming. They see customers come in, but do not acknowledge or even make eye contact. It is not an English barrier either. They speak English quite well. I've been there several times, so I wish these things change. The Sushi is ok so not the best and are mainly supported by university students. Perhaps without them they'd be out of business. Their cold attitude style makes it a real sour experience. Beggars can't be choosers (type thing). This fun little spot is in Reed Opera house and has wonderful people watching. It's one of my favorite lunch spots and you can make it in and out during your lunch hour. The food is fairly priced and meets all my expectations, I think it's better than any of the other Sushi places downtown. read more

I love this place and I'm a regular, but I took 2 stars down because the sushi maker guy behind the bar yelled at the employee very loudly in front of everyone in the restaurant. She was helping two people at the register and while she was, he screamed at her to move a group of people down who just walked in and continuously did so until she could get to them. Very unprofessional on his part and made me think less of this place now. Love the food still but they need to treat their employees better. Especially in front of their paying customers. read more

My husband and I visited this restaurant. I asked the waitress if they do specialty rolls; she said 'some times.' so, I ordered a simple roll- one ingredient inside, one on top. I will admit, after the daunting two ingredients, I did ask for some sauce and fried onions to garnish the top of the roll. The waitress told me, shortly, that they won't do it. When pressed for an explanation, all I was provided was "They're picky." Never, in all my experience in restaurants (both as an employee and a customer) have I had an establishment choose to be picky over making money and satisfying the customer. I didn't order the most intricate roll. It's called a shaggy dog- 2 ingredients with sauce toppers and fried onion. Guess what- I also have a choice to be "picky" about where I eat and where I spend my hard earned money. I will NEVER return to 503 sushi, and when I hear one of my friends mention sushi, I will tell them this story. Good riddance. read more

I ordered my food to go since I was in a hurry and by the time I sat down to eat it the salad that came with the entree was really warm, wilted, and brown. Didn't eat any of it. I'm not a sushi lover, but I really enjoy the Dynamite & Vegas rolls. They're a little spicy, creamy, and warm. Perfect for a cool night. I am dinging them for a star because I was not impressed by the waitstaff and the time we waited for our food. I went with three other people at lunch time, and we were going to get a to-go order. The waitress demanded that we write all of our orders on one sheet to save paper, but this made placing our order very confusing, and my friends' orders were slightly wrong when we got the food. Also, there was hardly anyone in the restaurant, and we still had to wait almost 45 minutes for our orders. People that were seated after us got their food before us. We also were not offered any drinks or anything while we waited. I would definitely go back, but I would probably eat in the restaurant or call my order in ahead of time. I really want to love this place- but I struggle. I've been here a dozen times or so, mostly because it's a place that my friends want to go to. I love the location and the mezzanine seating- it's a major plus. Time after time, however, the quality of the food has been lacking for me. I've also noticed that they seem to be understaffed just about every time I come, which leads to consistently unorganized service, and slow wait times. I've always enjoyed the waitress we usually have, I just feel bad for her- the past few times I've been in, she's been servicing at least 12 tables at a time, and so naturally, it's hard for her. My husband and I came for lunch and we got: edamame, miso soup, tuna poké, peppered tuna nigiri, creamy scallops nigiri, French roll, Oregon roll, Dragon roll and cream puffs for just $28! Not a huge review writer but since I'm here... just took my dad here, a large sushi fan from California. He RAVED about the amazing prices and then when the food came, raved again about how great it was. So price and taste was great, don't have to worry about soggy or bad fish. Shrimp nigiri was maybe the only meat that maybe could have had more life to it. Then the simple rice chicken bowl was amazing. Not just sliced over-grilled chicken doused in sugary teriyaki sauce over rice. It was chunks of thick chicken with a great sauce and house made mayo drizzled on top (never had a mayo type flavor on my teriyaki chicken bowls before but it was fantastic). Plus, for 6.50 the bowl was huge. Edamame was great too, yummy salty snack. Also, the prices are great all the time. No "deals" but constant low prices is pretty great. I love this little place. Good sushi for the price, lovely atmosphere. Service is fine, but when it's slow, you may want to venture to the other side from the entrance to be seated. No blame there- it's a very difficult layout for waiting tables. They could use a little more variety in the fish, but I have no problem with what they're doing with that. It's really smart to limit your menu items to what can be really fresh- and it is very nice and fresh. Perhaps as they get more popular, they can expand the offerings. This small sushi restaurant is a second floor hideaway. It's a beautifully decorated area. It's not as loud as I would have thought it to be with all the stores below it. It's a very laid back calm kind of environment, very enjoyable! The staff are amazing. They are kind and attentive at the perfect level. The food is great quality and delicious. It came out quickly and all the things I asked to be kept off of my roll was left off. I love a good miso soup and the soup I got here was amazing. It was nice and hot, it has a good amount of miso flavor and it's not too watery. I loved the serving size, it wasn't too big for me to finish and there was a good amount of add-ins.
